I have an Iroquois as well and have traveled a similar road. And have always been amazed at how cool Jess is throughout this adventure and how beneficial she is to the actual improvement on this boat! spirit and physicality, shout out to Jess!
We used to live in a big steel hulled houseboat that was built in 1952. She looked like an old river sternwheeler, minus the steering wheel. We lived on that through the winter and everything in Minnesota. It was pretty basic. I installed swinging beds for my kids, a queen bed for the wife and I, a cast iron gas fireplace, and even a small washer dryer. Unfortunately we didn't have it long enough to finish the work that we started. It was always sort of that Cabin in the Woods feel. The project that never quite made it. It's been years ago but we still talk about that boat. I've even talked to the man that has it now about buying it back. I can't remember who said it but I love the quote, "there are worse things a man could do than messing about in boats."
What a Journey You 2 have decided to embark on, wishing You the best of luck, that will be a sweet little Boat when it's all said and done, nice of the Marina Owner to have such Faith in You, better get busy and don't let the Ol' Boy down, I'm sure He's root'n for You both to be successful, it's a major learning experience owning such a Craft, good luck I'll be looking forward to seeing this through too the End! :D
Putting a bigger and better outboard on, with wheel steering, and turning it into a power cat, might be a lot more satisfying (and, a whole lot cheaper and faster) than trying to re-rig it ad a sailboat. I think you are going to be shocked when you find out what sailing rigging costs. If not, you need to find a boat you can strip. Just look up what new winches go for.
I want to comment (for UA-cam 'points') and I have to say your videos are so very entertaining! I think it has a lot to do with your personalities... you two are simply, very nice people...
This has been an adventure!! What story you guys have. Glad you found land and start fixing that boat. Looking forward to what this story leads too. Best of luck!!👏👏
If you ever want to actually sail that thing worth a darn, you’re going to need bigger and deeper rudders for sure and some dagger boards or swing keels for what looked like some slots for them in the hulls.
I live in Baltimore Maryland that is what we call ghetto sailing! Lol You are brave souls wish you 2 the best of luck you have gone through the hardest part of finding a boat and you are on you way to fixing it up and then it will be smooth sailing!!!
still watching haha, so inspiring for someone who wanna go boating.... I can only imagine how fun it would be to renovate that thing.. that's the joy of buying old stuffs :)) stay strong
I bought crestliner fish hawk, bass fishing boat for fixing. But I never give up! Lifted it into the air on wooden pillars I built myself. It was a huge pain to strip it, used, forgot how many cans of aircraft paint stripper. In the end some paint just wouldn't come off. Got a powerful power wash, and it barely blasted the remaining paint off. Painted with Alexseal, so that it is taken care of, now replacing all the plywood flooring, and the old carpet with vynil, do all wiring, and motor rigging. Quite some work remains, but I ain't quitting!
Hurray you made it, a fun trip! To the doubters, they didn’t sink or drown or kill anyone, they used initiative and common sense and learned a lot. Go team!
I live in Suffolk England. I’ve recently started watching people on catamarans adventures. But you’re starting at the bottom. I wish you both the best of luck. And I’m so impressed by your attitude and drive to live your dreams..
It has been fun watching you muck about on the water in a derelict vessel. Now time to see you get high with all the fiberglass work. Can’t wait to watch the progress.... seriously. Learning is part of the game.... but HOW you learn is the key.... hope you can get access to the internet and watch a few how to vids. Good luck!
I think I would make a power cat out of that boat and tour the great loop. Other wise its gonna be one expensive project.Good luck and thanks for sharing the adventure.
That's the thought that's going through my head as well. Sailboat rigging, stays, winches, blocks, sails, lines, are going to be expensive as hell. Unless they can find an abandoned boat for sail for parts and strip it out. And, they still have the rudder and steering problem, and missing daggerboards. That's what I would do. Up it to a thirty or forty horsepower, use the motor to steer it, with cable or hydraulic steering, and finish it out as a powerboat. Fuel costs will be up there, but it will still be a lot cheaper in the long run.
Now I see the full hull . The added on extra back stop can help get extra speed and for swimming . To make rudder solution use a stainless steel round bar attacked to the original transom down through a hole in the new added on back section .Then attach a rudder to that . The present skeg is tad small for protecting a rudder I would add 50% to the present skeg and make rudder flush with that Skeg and make rudder reach out 2 feet . If the rudder turns out to be too big you can cut it down to 18 inches but bear in mind if you lose one rudder that its good to have extra so single rudder can cope with steering . The boat has dagger boards so I presume has the interior casing to take them . More easy to go with that . If the casing has been removed then more easy to block up slots and add keels to bottom typically 1 foot deep and 10 feet long with sacrificial wood on the last two to three inches so you can take a pebble stoney type bottom better
Funny... i subscribed then un-subscribed then searched for your channel...then subscribed again. There's something in you which I can relate my life with the kind of mess you've got. What matters is the journey, everyday. Allow your passion and determination to steer you to great heights. Just do your best. Make the negativities as fuel for your dreams. So long as you both are happy with what you're doing, without hurting others, just go ahead. Someday, when you look back, you will be able to give thanks to this boat. and find this decision as a blessing. This is YT. What matters is your content and how you touched lives and make a difference. Do your best in your journey! Don't forget the good deed of people who helps you along the way. Don't give up on that dream! God bless you my brother and sister!
How about a Q and Q session?? Do a video where you answer our questions!! I would like to know what your plans are for the boat.. do you plan to make it a live aboard and just go off sailing after you get it done? Are you going to work on it over the winter?? Can we get a few questions answered please guys??!! I subbed!! Well worth watching!!
You’re gonna be just fine. When you’ve finished the boat and sailed south to Florida, you’ll have some great stories to share with other cruisers. Wow, google told you to go to a BK on an Air Force base. Priceless!
Be sure and reinforce the centerboard trunks before you restore too much of the cabinetry and bulkheads, they will be easier to get to. They were a weak point on the Iroquois'. Probably better just to make some good dagger boards. Don't make them too strong, you will want them to break before the boat does if you hit something hard. Sugar scoops look great and are no doubt very functional in terms of added speed and easy water access, though they will add a bit to your marina fees every time you dock. Keep things light as you rebuild, these kinds of hulls are very sensitive to weight! Especially in that size. Actually using modern materials gives you a chance to make a better, lighter boat than the original - and the original is a pretty good boat. No one makes them like that anymore. You couldn't even look at something comparable new, like a Tomcat, for the six grand that cost you to buy yours. You have a lot of work ahead but it could definitely be worth it. Now that you have had a dose of cockpit fun in the sun you see the value of adding a hard top when you rebuild. The British were not big on hard tops on their cats, they wanted as much sun as they could get in their climate! Look at Iriquois 30 "Osprey" rebuild for inspiration, excellent example. Hey good luck and keep having fun!
Looks to me that the easiest way to mount rudders on you boat its to remove the "Sugar Scoops" and mount a pair of rudders on pintels outboard. Otherwise your going to have to drill holes through your hulls, and creat whole new internal structure to mount your rudders to mount new rudders inboard. Good luck ;-)
Lord in your name I ask you to bless these two and watch over them where ever they may choose to go may their happiness be with them at all times good and bad, and may the seas give safe passage when they are sailing about, take care you two ,be safe ,and know you are in my prayers ...good days to ya and stay true to what means more to you....
can you tell me the name and location of the Marina and how much they charge for haul out and per day on the hard ? And can you live aboard while you work on your boat if you wanted to do that.
Where are the rudders on this boat? Looks like you have rudder skegs but no rudders. And have you got sails? I would cut off the sugar scoops, hang rudders off the back of each transom and get the mast up. Oh and get a manual bilge pump in reach when you steer the boat 👍
Suggestion: That PVC pipe to the throttle seems to be a weak spot. Perhaps a trip to an auto store and you might find a section of coolant line / radiator hose that adapts to the throttle tighter. A couple of hose clamps should help. Hate to see you break off the throttle or lose that pipe while underway.
Subscribed interested to see what it will turn out like. As a piece of advice do yourself a favour find a second boat with a gigantic hole or something to take parts from. Getting everything new will be extremely expensive. Everything marine is extremely expensive new. So a good source of components goes a long way in keeping it affordable.
That is so awesome you succeeded in the boat you bought, three cheers !!! Now if you ever do that _ _ _ _ _____and more again!!!!! I trip like that i so scary, all the dangers, pitfall, if that little motor stopped in the middle, bad weather, sea sick ?, It was enough for me to pull my hair!! Thou, it is so fantastic and adventure to accomplish, again three cheers and a hurrah!!!! Now lets repair and remodel the boat, ooou , I am so excited !!! lets do it !!!!!!
Hey wow kind of cool to see some uncandid video of the marina Cove, was fun following your adventure so far yes that was interesting in that Storm also that night good thing you made it to the hotel Yes the big adventure begins I have to stop by and see what kind of progress you've made in past weeks oh, we've been busy out here on the hook for the last 3 months preparing for departure South by East, Far East eventually but one day at a time as we say mason Adventure each day if you choose to challenge it and live to tell another day the story at some point I have subscribed will be heading out of port soon hope to visit you both and see your progress before leaving oh, boy it's been cold lately here wishing you both an awesome week and a productive one at that looks like the temps are going to be sliding down soon fast be safe
Figured I'd run into you working on your boat before I'd end up seeing your videos but if you want to that info on those solar panels in our setup and I was two pieces of software I wrote we're doing that stuff I'll try to hook up with you before we head out here next week I also have the 4-month data on the fridge and freezer unit independent with that single Q cell working out awesome
I really enjoy your videos! I think you're a little nuts, that's a huge project your taking on but, I'll watch every video you post and wish you two all the best!
Nice, step by step. Good job. What are the plans while she on the hard? I say a bimini and some remote controls for the motor. Makes me want to start a project boat.
Could you give me the details of the marina you hauled out at. Pricing per month, and any other important things that you can think of. I would very much appreciate it. Great winds your way
Didn't think about this before, how are the rudders going to attach to the skegs with the scoops covering the stern caps where the steering gear USE to be mounted. I can't stand it when other people try to make a boat more than what it was designed for. Scoops would look good finished but I would get a tyvek suit and a cut off wheel and descoop. I don't know how your going to steer under sail. Or, get a wheel and a 25hp and just motor. Shame, that's a nice small cat.
What Boatyard are you in? Some of us are looking at options for hauling out at a reasonable priced DIY yard for our boat projects. Would be nice if we could call and compare rates. Thanks. Hope your project goes well. Keep the videos coming. We enjoy your content. ♡
Thanks for the video’s. I would be interested in taking a trip from New Jersey to Fort Myers on a shipwreck or a cruiser. Or from Fort Myers to New Jersey.
Did the boat ever have a rudder? I swear by the things. For directional control, a rudder and a tiller combine with balanced sails can really make a difference ;-)
Not knowing your plan, my thought is wtf are you two doing? The haul out was probably more than the value of your boat. However, im all in. Prove everybody wrong. Looking forward to seeing you in Bahamas!
That's the boats graveyard!! if these two people can understand that they can't ride a bike onto a military base there is no way in hell they're going to be able to get this boat repaired and on the water. If there weren't people on the water guiding them the entire wage their destination they would have never made it! And if there's not people at that Marina showing them how to repair that boat it is not going anywhere!
@@ericlambert7193 I'm not a fan of your na-saying. So why are you so negative? Did you try a re-fit and lost interest? So now anyone trying a big job is going to fail ! If you are as accomplished as your claim then you know that nothing on this boat is that complicated
@@daneatherton7886 Ok!! I think they could get this boat up and running, but from what it looks like to meis that they watched a lot of videos and thought this would be cool ( getting their own UA-cam channel and making money as they fix up a boat). I think it's a great ideabut I think they should have watched more UA-cam channels on boat navigation , buoy markers and safe passage before they ever tried to take that boat that far. And as far as repairing the boat there are a lot of videos and books! but if they weren't willing to watch videos or read about how to safely get their boat from one place to another place I don't see them doing it for that.
@@ericlambert7193 what you or I think they SHOULD have done is irrelevant to the path that they take. Your description of what you think motivates them is the same as what motivated most UA-cam sailing channels. There is no question as to whether or not they can succeed, THEY CAN. The question is whether they will succeed, and that question of will us yet to be seen
Imagine the possibility of being shot for a whopper. Where I live, the mighty whopper holds the possibility of needing antibiotic shots after consumption, but not of being shot. So- similar, sort of. . ;)
You should start recording your audio with a couple backup mics just in case you lose audio again. You’ll also be able to catch more voices from both of you. Either way, loved the way you made up for the lost audio. You covered it up well!
I'm glad you two found a place you could afford to get the work done. Don't make your minds up about ditching the sailing rig until you spend some time out sailing on a friends boat. Motoring gets boring as hell IMAO.
Blissful ignorance, I'm not sure I've ever seen a worse case of it. I wish you two the best of luck with this project, I'd love to see y'all pull it off, you two are fun to watch. Please take a little time to learn the basics of ground tackle, navigation and weather (get a copy of Chapman Piloting & Seamanship). How's the Yukon Delta project? That's what I was really interested in before starting to watch this endeavor.
We’ll pull it off :) Yukon delta is good. We get back to it now that the catamaran is dry docked. Next videos coming out will be houseboat. Thanks for your support!

How is it no one showed you how to rig a canopy and tiller hold? Also you need a bigger motor bro. That was made for a marina dinghy, not open water.
Lol ! Thanks so much for not shooting us !
That's right up there with "hey Jess, your boob fell out" I laughed for 10 minutes...
very well done... thanks !
Enjoying the ride.......good luck.
Have fun, looks like a good project
Thanks man!! We sure have our work cut out for us!!
@@9to5less 👍
Bet that shower was awesome!
A for enthusiasm anyway...... good luck you pair.
Your videos are so cool when will you be posting more house boat videos
Yeah what happened to the house boat? Did you sell it to buy the cat?

Ok!!
LOVEYOU GUYS
GREAT VIBE
keep it up we want to se more
Aw thanks!!! We have plenty more to come and will try to start posting more frequently!
You could use 25 hp MERCURY OUTBOARDS are great engines and I’ve heard they are very CHARITABLE ⛵️
Love your videos. There is dreaming and doing. Doing is better. Ignore any criticism that does not come with advice.
What marina did they say they left their boat at? Been thinking of bringing my sailboat back North and need a reasonable place to leave it for a bit.
Marina Cove in Hampton. Give them a call. They’re great!!
I saw a decent marina in New Jersey of all places. www.cassidysmarina.com/
hey an AF base, let's just go through it!
Imagine the possibility of being shot for a whopper. Where I live, the mighty whopper holds the possibility of needing antibiotic shots after consumption, but not of being shot. So- similar, sort of. . ;)
What's the name of the marina? Where is it?
I swear I just passed you yesterday on the ICW... By Jax/St Aug!!
Nice!!! Yea you sure did! I’m pretty sure we got it on video too! Safe travels!
Boat has a lot of potential.
How are you going to work on the bottom of your boat when it is only 1 foot of the grown?.
Stay tuned!!
Ok. One battle out of the way. Just finding someone willing to put it on the hard alone is an accomplishment. Now lets see what you do to that hull.
Before 911 you could go on base and eat at Burger King tax-free LOL
Wow. Flash back.. and now your on an electric /car camp journey
The Air Force base 😂 things could have really been bad there!!!!!
Hahahahaha. Yea omg. Luckily the guy was really cool and didn’t shoot us in the face!!
Nah. They can't shoot worth shit nor tuff enough lol.. Unless they want to get the fighter jets out lol. Then you're fucked haha
@@9to5less Just so you know from where you are now down until around Daytona is the most concentrated amount of military bases on the east coast nuclear and non nuclear subs to planes. I'm at the Florida/Georgia border and there's like 5 within a few miles of me. When y'all make it down here if need hand with rides or whatever I'll be in touch if talk keep uploading your progress when get closer I'll message you again so can get in touch.
I have know this guy for a good while. Stayed tuned I’m sure there will be even better excitement 😂
You should be able to get on base. You just need to follow the ID and sign in procedures. Probably not worth it for Burger King.
Let’s the fun begin!
more viedeos please! keep the story going!
I’m so relieved you didn’t get shot by the armed guard at the Air Force base!
Big Reveal! Facetime with Jess at 0:27!
What is the name of that AFB where a hotel room is that close to it ? What city and state are u in ?
