Yup, super fun engine. Had it in a 440i, have it in an m240i convertible (both stage 1 tune, 0-60 in low 4’s). My only gripe is the m240i is geared like a go-cart. 😂
Not every car needs to be made for the masses so everyone can afford it. I love my M2. I track it at COTA. It's an outstanding vehcle in every respect.
I mean it's not about the pricetag it's the choices they've decided on. Someone who rents a $3000-4000 apartment in the city can probably easily afford a Porsche Cayman or panamera at $1k a month but it turns out they live in NYC or San Diego and are actually middle class. The pricetag isn't everything and like Scotty said, the guy is young. Why not enjoy a car. He has all the time in the world to figure out if a wife and kids is right for him and maybe they're better off without! No losers in your situation or theirs
I don’t need all those bells and whistles. Just give me a well built reliable car that’s got some power. Good luck servicing anything in that car. I like stuff I can work on
thats why I bought my 2018 2.0t accord.Reliable, good on gas,ok power, great driving , cheap to maintain and easy to work on.120 000 kms and drives like it just came out of the dealer.
I leased a 2024 M440i convertible and it’s a great car, no issues, would never buy one used though since most are leased and beaten up by people who didn’t care about treating it with care. The engine noise to me is perfect. Not over the top nor too quiet, a nice linear sound. I would say it’s not as comfortable as it should be for a luxury car, and the sound system is lacking, but people tend to buy these for the engine and tech.
If you dont get the harman kardon sound system yes, its lacking. Sure its an extra. But (in my car it was 580€) its relatively cheap and a good bang for buck in terms of extras you can fit to it.
In England and Germany people keep them for 200,000 miles. BECAUSE THEY GET THEM SERVICED!! BMW are amazing cars. Best driving experience ever!!! I've driven 35 different cars.
Stop that crazy talk. A stock GNX engine would absolutely eat a stock B58 engine. The GNX was good for 0-60 in 4.7 seconds, in a lead brick... In 1984 .. Then you have the pu106b in the AMG ONE Mercedes. Also the ecoboost V6 in the 2017 Ford GT, Alfa Romeos 147 GTA in the Busso. 2 gems there. Then you have the true best V6 of all time. That's the VR38DETT in the Nissan GTR. Godzilla! I am not even the biggest Nissan or GTR fan but you just can't argue the bang, the buck, the reliability/ performance etc. etc. etc. Final bonus entry the 2GR-FE in the Lotus Emira is amazing.
Had a diesel X5 that I traded at the 11 year point. Only had to have the harmonic balancer changed out around the 10-year point. Have an X2 for going on 3 years now... zero issues with it so far. Not a rattle, not a recall needed done, nothing but oil changes & a set of rear brake pads.
@@anaccount7923They probably have never owned or driven a BMW. Just making excuses why they don’t have one when the real reason is they can’t afford one.
@GarbanzoDragon I would think permissive use would cover car insurance... which is just fine almost everywhere in the US. Its possible if they found out it was used monetarily in a YT video they might try to claim it was a business use of borrowing the car and then there may be insurance problems... If it was deemed business, or Scotty was actually acting as a mechanic, then Scotty would have to cover it, or have an insurance plan to cover it... so maybe they wanted to play it safe. Still getting better reviews when Scotty can drive himself.
@ArshAZ83 I didn't make up jack, what are you even on about? Just thought it would be better if he could have driven it, don't read into things that aren't there.
@@jamescherney5874 no, the mindset is I bought a car I can actually afford to maintain. That’s why Toyota’s are more common than BMW’s. More people can afford to maintain them.
Absolutely, Scotty has NO praise at all for the new Toyota V6 turbo charged engines. He foretold of having problems with them when Toyota announced the demise of their V8's. Scotty is spot on.
Our family has owned 5 series for years all straight line 6s. E60s, f10s and now my new g30 with b58 engine. Transmission and engine they never die. Only problem are oil and coolant leaks since everything is made of plastic. My brother and I just learned to fix everything ourselves. Bammm problem solved. I guarantee you we spend less money on maintenance than someone driving a Camry that takes it to a dealership for service. You can drive in style and still not have it be a nightmare!
They actually start falling apart at 50,000 MI. I had one. It doesn't matter if you do maintenance. If you don't have a few grand in the bank at all times for plastic parts to be replaced, you're not going to be happy
Not if you buy the one with the B58 engine, this engine was made in a partnership with toyota. These engines last for ever, just make sure it says 40i in the back. That engine is bullet proof
People don't like BMW and say it's crap because all they see are 20-something year olds driving them and beating them to hell, then selling them on the used market to suckers who have nothing but problems because they thought they found a sweet deal. However, if you go buy a BMW from a certified dealer or an enthusiast that knows the cars and actually learn about them and prepare yourself for the commitment of owning one, you're in for a treat. A well-maintained BMW will last a long time. My neighbor has two BMW's an E39 M5 (25 years old) and an E60 525 (15 years old), both run amazing and both are in amazing condition. And yes, they do get driven.
@@morimoko I wouldn't say it's one of the best cars ever. If you skimp on the routine maintenance and ignore the vanos items, you'll regret it later on. That's why so many BMW's are turds now, and why they have the money pit reputation.
My 2007 e92 with naturally aspirated inline six has over 153K miles and I have maintained it well since it was new. It is remarkably well balanced and even after owning it for 17+ years, it is a joy to drive. It still looks great and the AC still blows cold despite our Florida weather. This was and is a great car.
I have a 435d, which is a Msport. 0_60 is 4.3 seconds, producing 313bhp stock. The car has had a recall under BMW for EGR. A coolant pipe cane loose and was re attached and replaced. It is 2014 so 10 years old 11000 miles runs perfectly, poweful and still hitting sib 4.3 seconds on start. So yeah tell me a BMW is junk. I think some BMWs are junk, just like any manufacturer. Lemon cars are a thing and my 325i was no where near as good as my current car. Do your research.
In 2019 I bought a used 2016 M235i with the latest N55 -just before the B58. It’s been wonderful! No repairs, just did my own oil changes and new front pads. And I see the same car listed for what I paid for it. 😮
@ArshAZ83 Scotty might like driving our old 1970 C10 P/U with the 350 that has 270 old time 4BBL mechanical horse power. My mother drove it only ONCE as I got yelled at by Sally our local salvage auto yard owner! She called me to ask who had been driving the truck past her yard. I said my mother. She said that my mother was going way... too fast for the state hwy! Sally told me she would not supply parts if I allowed my mother to drive the truck that fast again. Scotty likes fast & spirited horses! We have some of the Thoroughbred kind. 40.9 mph in 2 seconds & good for at least 3/8 of a mile. Ask us how we know. Allowed our racing license to expire almost 20 years ago.
I currently own and maintain seven BMW's. Learn to wrench and you will never worry about owning a BMW. I LOVE these cars and will own them until I die.
There are people who drive cars has a function of getting to and from . Then there are people who appreciate driving and enjoy a winding road and find it invigorating and therapeutic. I am of the latter, a good drive is my high blood pressure medication. Everyone and I mean everyone would always choose something like this BMW over a 10 year old Corolla if they had the resources. Scotty is awesome and his advice is fantastic for folks who do not have said resources.
I always heard bad stuff about BMWs. Then I bought one, I won't drive anything else. Like he said it is a DRIVERS CAR. If you have a little spare cash and you want a super clean, super fast car, you can't beat it.
I have a 2018 M240i convertible I picked up a year ago for 35k with 17k miles on it and I love it. I don't care. Car was driven by some girl down in miami 3k miles a year and there was a 3k receipt in the glove box from right around when it was traded in for an oil change, spark plugs and a coolant sensor. I've thrown a bigger HPFP and a bigger turbo on it and it's fast enough for me for now anyway.
Scotty as a 38 y/o male, no kids and single, I too have a 23 m440i xdrive that’s my baby. The fact that you endorsed my car gives me an extra vote of confidence.
I drive a 2023 M240I. Fantastic car! And, same powertrain, minus the mild hybrid system. I bought the car to enjoy as a daily driven enthusiast/drivers vehicle, and it is indeed great at just about everything - I appreciate it every time I get in it. What I didn’t expect though was all the compliments I get about it from random people. The color is blue over a red interior, M performance carbon spoiler and winglets. People really do love it. Again, not why I bought the car m, but it is nice, to hear how many people like the look of it, talk cars w/ them at the gas pump, etc.
My current BMW is an electric SUV made in Germany. It was purchased new and fully loaded including winter tires. I paid cash for it because debt sucks and I hate every form of it. The car rides extremely nice, it has no squeaks or rattles even after 1 1/2 years. The range is also great with it getting 480 km - 500+Km on 80% charge and about 350k in the Canadian winter. The car has more power than I need, 500+ Horsepower that I never get to use because of rules, regulations, and ethical reasons. The body underneath has carbon fibre, I can see this when I open the doors and it does look amazing. So far so good, the only thing I took it to the dealer so far was a recall for the airbag and I had the whole car wrapped in PPF at the start. BMWs made in Germany are of top quality in my experience so far.
@@Rzn8B58 B58 is a beast and should be reliable. Toyota did contract BMW with the supra and it has this engine. Going back to SUVs, If I'm not mistaken, the only SUVs made in Germany are the pure electric ones. Even the BMW XM which is the top of the line full M SUV car with plug hybrid is made in the States in Carolina. When and if I decide to get another BMW electric car in the future, It has to be made in Germany.
I have a 430Xi, non hybrid, automatic 4Cl, i'm at 65k miles, oil changed every 5k at dealer, just had transmission fluid changed ($1500) so far so good! the key to these cars is 1) they need to live in a garage 2) warm them up before you drive. 3) plastic parts get brittle, spray the engine bay with plastic rejuvenation stuff and you should be ok! 4) that 8 speed in that car is the same one for the X6, over engineered. The turbo is huge but looks and feels well made. So far a very nice car. i enjoy it.
My 2021 Mustang GT got up to 28 mpg on the highway on a road trip These new modern engines are great for being efficient when you need it and powerful when you wanna put your foot down
I'm really not a big BMW fan -- but I was in the previous century. I bought a 1969 2002 that bought from a fellow soldier when I was finally discharged from the US Army in 1972. Anyway I kept tinkering with it and eventually I figured out how to fit it with an imported Schnitzer 16v head back in around 1974 I think. I'll guess that it made it made about 150 hp and could easily keep up with the Porsche 911 and blow off 914s and the Alpha Romeo TVAs of the day! Those were days before there even was a BMWNA and the cars came to US streets via Hoffman Motors in NYC! I was glad to hear you are still alive Scotty!!!
@@apscoradiales Oh god no -- I sold that back about 1981-2 or so. I think that head was originally imported by Nick Craw Racing in North Carolina? He had several o them as I recall. I don't recall what racing series he used it in -- if he used it?
The newer cars with the inline 6 twin scroll single turbo B58 and S58 twin turbo 6's are really well put together. The previous engine pre 2016 N55 and S55 were also decent but, they had a major flaw in the design. The issue was addressed in the B58's/S58's. BMW and Toyota co developed the B58 and you can find the gen 2 B58tu engine in the newer Toyota Supra's. I have a 17' 440i F36 Gran Coupe and it's the 4 door/hatchback version of the car in this video. Really practical family car that still has some cojones in a canyon.
I had a purchased a used 2015 228ix with 50k miles on it. Man, do i miss that car. Drove it everywhere for 3 years, did the basic maintenance myself, and never even saw the CEL once. Quick, comfortable, reliable and fun. I understand the costs of repair when they get up there in age, but its no reason to not own them before 120k miles, they're great cars.
I have a 2011 328i with the M-Sport package I bought in 2014. The i6 is nice and smooth and while not fast like that 440 it is quick and still a great daily driver.
Ive had 13 cars in my life. 3 were BMWs. Theyre the only ones of the 13 that left me walking. But when theyre running right....theyre amazing cars to drive.
I heard the 6 cylinder is most reliable for BMW.. I'm learning about the M6 N63 Hot V8 twin turbos cause I bought one.. 2013 BMW M6 Competition San Morino Blue with black interior for my fun car... Dont worry Scotty.. My daily work car is your favorite 2003 Lexus ES300
I bought the i4 (electric version of this car) when they came out. Waited 15 months from the initial order. Yeah, pricy to the point of pain. But it is the best car I've ever owned. Future is generator driven EREV plug in hybrids.
Nice ride, but please don’t speed, I live in LA, almost every day lethal car crashes are broadcasted on the news here, 60% of the time a BMW is involved. 80% of those involve young drivers. 50% involve fatalities. Its crazy.
Toyota, everyone's favorite reliable car uses the B58 engine in their very own Supra. This engine will definitely be good for a long time. M240i, M340i, 440i etc, it sounds so good and it is fast!
Funny, how at 135 MPH, the highway becomes a little scary and the nose of the car lifts, and the steering gets irrational. Just saying, 135 MPH, on any car, needs some down force aerodynamics to safely roll along.
@ArshAZ83 suspension is more important than aero and can help a car alot. but aero definitely makes a difference. driving those x5m and cybertrucks at 140 even though they have weight the lack of downforce makes it easier to steer off
BMW is a beautiful car but within 1 yr the depreciation is outrageous and durability is questionable at best , I'd rather spend less for a better car like Lexus or Toyota
“Durability questionable at best” my mom got into a crash with a semi and came out without a scratch in her 2006 X5. My family has had 3 of others over the years which all have lasted for many miles
so funny to read all the beamer haters. If I put any of you behind the wheel of my M240i for 10 minutes you would understand what driving is all about. expensive car? yes. costly to maintain? sure. but life is way too short not to feel some exhilaration every day. worth every penny..
I've had 3 bimmers so far , and they are amazing vehicles, only bad thing is mechanics see a euro and think they can charge an arm and a leg for maintenance and repairs, when upon doing them yourself you see that they are totally ripping you. Learn some basic wrenching and you'll have a good time with a used bimmer 👍🏾
BMWs represent a depreciation bargain. Get a clean one 5-10 yr old and you’ll have a great car for the money. Just be ready to fix a few things and address the known issues.
No ceramic coating is bullet proof. It will still show signs of marring through a tunnel wash. It will also get contaminated from the environment. Scotty stick to mechanical advice.
Possibly. On the other hand my 3rd hand car 2006 was ceramic coated in 2006 and still looks brand new & perfect. Also took a eye from the motorway (the ones flush with the road) that flipped up from the front wheel and dinged the rear wheel arch and didn't even mark it, but dented the metal. That was in 2021. Brand was Supagard, so can't say I'm dissapointed.
To be honest though....if you're buying a brand new BMW is because you can afford them new and don't care what happens to the when the warranty runs out. Why? Because you will be in a new one
@@matthewbarrios1028 a new bmw will cost you an arm and a leg. Whichis why people buy them used and even then they are super expensive unless you get one that has already 50k miles or more on it.
Scotty was asked to only describe what he saw. He didn’t mention the pros or cons of that BMW. I’m a BMW lover and I own a 1988 735i BMW and a 2004 545i BMW. My 1988 BMW with 130,000 miles gives me no issues, but my 545i V8 BMW has water and oil leaks all the time. The seal under the alternator bracket is approximately $1000.00 to replace, while the gasket/seal cost less than $20.00. The 545i with that V8 engine drives great and I still love my car and I’m not selling. My next BMW is the M5 CS. To love BMW you should be able to do some little things yourself, I think (that’s just my opinion like Scotty’s).

Sound system is exactly what I need besides power. It’s sad they don’t ever make them with both
