I'm American and I love watching international films, I feel seriously sorry for anyone who is too lazy to read subtitles or just wants to watch films in English. They seriously have no idea what they're missing out on.
Me and my 17 yr old always watch movies with subtitles on anyways. So when we went to see it, we knew it wouldn't bother us. Korean movies are so good.
Don't be ignorant. Just because some TV face says they do not like subtitles it does not mean all Americans are intellectually lazy. Yeah, we get it, hate for the U.S. is the current trend.
Please let your kids grow up watching films with subtitles so they can grow up to be culturally competent. At least they will not grow up to say thoughtless things on a live TV program at the wrong moment. Saying something like I do not like to read subtitles and being glad about English version coming out when reporting a foreign film winning major awards, is very rude and disrespectful to all the staff members (including the actors and actresses) who were involved in making of this film, parasite, and to those who make films in foreign languages... it is kind of like when reporting Michael Jackson winning a grammy, saying I do not like to listen to songs in English and being glad that the songs will be covered by another artist in a different language.
Americans are being robbed not only in politics, but in cultural experiences as well. I really enjoyed "Parasite," it's a damn great film in any language. I regret that I don't know Korean after seeing that film. I do also feel that "Pain and Glory" could have easily won a co-Oscar for best picture.

The good news is that I do I think more Americans are becoming more open to foreign entertainment. I think the rise of popularity of Anime and K-Pop are helping with that, but it still drives me nuts how many of my fellow Americans will just blow off a really good movie or show for having subtitles. Wtf is wrong with subtitles!? And parasite is going to be Americanised**!! Wait what... You think it will be the same? You won't even get the feels of how the Korean actors have portrayed their characters. Sighs
Will not be watching an Americanized version of Parasite. No thank you. Anyone who hasn't watched it yet, I would say wait for a dubbed version if you absolutely cannot deal with subtitles. But please watch the film. It's just so good and no remake or replica will ever compare
I'm a hindi and English speaker, I've actually find myself enjoying original content in Japanese and Korean. This is because dub sucks, not that much but the original emotion can only be felt in the medium the movie or show was made. Never criticise subtitles. They are useful for normal as well as hearing impaired people...
I really didn't know that some people hated subtitles, I'm so okay with it that amazes me how much ignorance are out there in the world. In my country, everyone prefers subtitles because it's so good to hear the voice of the actor, it makes the acting be more good
I didn't watch the broadcast live even though I’m a Korean who watched ‘Parasite’ three times. (It was 8am in Korea. Not too early or late.) Because I thought that ‘Parasite’ would not receive awards except for the ‘Best International Film’. Just like it happened at the Golden Globe. But it is TOTALLY different from what I thought. I think it is so historical moment. When I saw an article saying that the parasite had won four awards, I felt like I was getting a message that somewhere a BIG WALL is being built, but some are tearing it down. There is still a limit to the lack of diversity in judges, which makes it difficult for actors in non-English-speaking countries to receive awards. But there are certainly signs that it is changing. Anyway, Korea is very proud of this situation right now. Congratulations on breaking the one-inch barrier, Oscar!🥳
Some of the best movies every made are foreign films in Subtitles! Such a shame that people don't understand how easy it is to watch them. One of many I love is Pan's Labyrinth.
Now i know why they let that short lady speak she is owner of many cinemas in hong kong and plans to expand to CHINA! She has put 1billion into american films this 2020. So those who ask her for speak have new job i guess
I find it funny and interesting when all the people in the hall went crazy and chanted big when parasite was announced for the best picture but still calling it 'upset' win or 'i don't like to watch foreign language films with subtitles blablabla...' lol please stay in your small world :)
Subtitles are already condensed versions of the original dialog to make them more readable. Dialog-heavy foreign drama films, which Parasite happens to be, are usually tougher to "translate" and thus less marketable than, say, foreign action or horror films. Parasite's success is due to its universal and relatable themes, especially in the US where the heart of capitalism is.
It's was high time that a Foreign Language Film like Parasite won Best Picture, which is a first in the Awards' 91+ Year History. In the past, All of the Films that won Best Picture were all English Language Films.
Phoenix winning best actor and Parasite for best picture was well deserved, also long time overdue Oscar for Bradd Pitt (I mean he plays the same character every film)

I read subtitles all the time bc I love korean movies. But I have to admit it’s sometimes very annoying when I would miss some scenes trying to read the subtitles. People who aren’t used to subtitles can’t read as fast even if it’s their mother language. So they have a point in saying they overcame the subtitles issue because the movie was so good.
One day we will have a documentary win Best Picture or an animated movie to win Best Picture. More non English movies would win Best Picture soon. Maybe even a non English language documentary film would win Best Documentary Feature
I really can´t understand how come some people just "don´t like to see movies with subtitles"... the whole world has to see your US movies with subtitles...if time you US do the same
Lmao, didn't know reading subtitles would be such a big deal for US citizens. When I first watch a movie at the cinema in the Flanders region in Belgium, they have 2 subtitles (Dutch and French) for movies in a foreign language.
It's so interesting to see how people like Phoenix and Pitt really believe that anyone at all is interested in his political beliefs. If anything, it gives Trump even more credit than he already has. Showbusiness is a platform for glamour and all sorts creativity, but please leave politics where it belongs: Washington.
I find I pay more attention to films with subtitles anyway, as I have to be looking at the screen all the time to know what's going on. Anything in English I can look away momentarily pick something up or say something to somebody and still be able to follow the storyline and what's happening on screen.
"I don't like reading subtitles" wasn't the worst statement in this interview for me, cause at least she did an effort to change it. "An americanized version will come out in a venue in which you don't need to read subtitles" was, because it's just normalizing the american conformism and the problem
Lol, I dont even realize untill now that major americans dont like watching movies with subtitle, while here I am and a lot of asian ppl like watching every foreign (hollywood, bollywood, korean, japan, thai, indo, malay) movies that absolutely hv a subtitle in the theater 😂
They talk abou reading the subtitle but why don't they think that we are as an asian have watched a lot of film by reading the subtitle, and it is just something usual because we appreciate every great move no mether what's the language.
The series being in English isn't even completely set in stone yet. Also what the heck is "upset win"? There are some films in America that were released that are basically the English version of original Korean movies. However, the original ends being so much better than what's released in English. Sometimes the English version either butchers the way it was originally or some that were missing some that were in the original. So yeah get used to subtitles, because they will open your eyes to great movies (not only Korean ones).
The conservative Academy Awards in the United States left a historic moment beyond their league. But Grammys have failed to break down the barriers of language, and in music that is free and beyond the limits of communication. As director Bong Joon Ho said.. “Once you overcome the one inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”
And that is true. I am not Korean and I love watching Korean dramas and films for so long now. South Korea has lot of great artists and films you will be amazed. There’s a lot of art in this country. I am glad that they are finally recognized. And Bing Joon Ho has a lot more awesome films before “Parasite”.
Why is it an upset win?
....oh right, forgot that the film had to be an American made film for it not to be an upset.
Remember, Parasite won the Cannes Film Festival Best Picture first before the Oscar. 👍👏👏👏👍
Don’t forget Marty (1955) and The Lost Weekend (1945). It’s the best independent movie ever.
“ I hate watching movies with subtitles!”
That’s like watching dubbed anime 🤢
I hate dubbed anime

Watch this
Parasite = minsara kanna (Tamil)
Hollywood will do a remake? No thanks.
It won't be as good of course. But I enjoyed both Old Boys. I'll definitely check it out. But it's gonna be ruined.
Remakes are often worse, for example the Intouchables Americanised to the Upside.
It shouldn’t be considered an “upset”. It was well deserved.
I'm American and a lot of the movies and shows I like aren't in English.
Good for you, tiger
Did she just say"UPSET"?
Why is it an UPSET?
Upset as in unexpected
Because it didn't deserve to win.
@@machovoce6826 It deserves. Multiple groups and festivals went to them. Check out IMDB and Metacritic pages.
@@senzadite9270 It was a great independent movie.
@@machovoce6826 Give your reasons why then
“I don’t like watching movies with subtitles”
*Anime fans have left the chat*
There’s something poetic about foreign films with subtitles because you get to see great writing at work.
watching Movie with subtitles is the Best
Learn to read because you are missing so much if you don't. English is our language so read the best there is to offer often free. Be smart.
Thanks to reading subtitles all my life, I learned English. You should try it.
They are useful for normal as well as hearing impaired people...
when receiving such an award, it's nice to be humble about it instead of cockin it out.
Excuse me .... Parasite’s wins had NOTHING to do with “inclusion.” It had everything to do with it being THE BEST FILM OF THE YEAR .
It wasn't a surprise that Parasite won. It was the best film period.
Can't believe that most of americans who love movies are so lazy to read subtitles.
"I used to think my life was a tragedy, but now I realize it's a comedy."
~ Joker
hey Americans: now's the time to pop that subtitle cherry!
Once you overcome the 1 inc barrier of subtitles, the whole world will be open to you.
SHE missed th opportunity of watching good and marvelous movies from around the world because of subtitles. Kudos to her.
“you use “upset win” wow it’s not polite
Why was it an upset though? I’ve seen way more people happy than mad
I want my country to be the most beautiful country in the world.
My heart was broken by another's aggression and I don't want my country to invade others.
Our wealth is enough if we can enrich our lives, and our strength is enough if we can prevent others from invading. All I want to have is the power of a high culture. Because the power of culture makes us happy and gives happiness to others. - Kim Koo (1876-1949), Korea's national leader
Mr. Kim Koo's 'My Wish' [백범 김구 선생의 '나의 소원' 中]
I want Korea to be the most beautiful country in the world.
I don't want Korea to be the strongest and richest country in the world.
I don’t want to invade other countries because I have suffered from other countries’ invasions.
Our strength and wealth are enough to satisfy our lives, and our military strength is sufficient if we can prevent other invasions.
What I want is the power of a high culture.
The power of culture can make us happy, and it can also give happiness to others.
What we lack now is not military or economic power.
The power of the present natural science is enough for mankind to live comfortably.
The reason why mankind is unhappy now is because of the lack of justice, honesty, mercy, and love.
When this mind expands, all mankind will be able to live comfortably.
I want Korea to be a source of high and new cultures, a target, and a model, not a country that imitates other countries.
So I want Korea to achieve world peace."

There are many trees in the mountains, and many flowers in the fields.
Various trees are combined to form the beauty of the great forest, and 100 flowers bloom to form a rich scenery of spring.
In Korea, religion, philosophy, and the great ideas of mankind will bear fruit with flowers, and the largest and highest culture of mankind will be achieved.
Bong and Song Gang-ho almost lost their career due to the 503government's blacklist
If the people had not broken 503 with candlelight demonstrations, there was no 'parasite'.
Did she just say that the academy awards were only 90 seconds?
I really can´t understand how come some people just "don´t like to see movies with subtitles"... the whole world has to see your US movies with subtitles...if time you US do the same
I'm sooooo proud and I'm not even korean.
So proud of Director Bong Junho❤️❤️❤️and all the actors and actress of Parasite❤️❤️
They're too lazy too read subtitles
Parasite was historic but it was not a big upset. Vegas oddsmakers had it an extremely close second behind 1917
Ridiculous. Parasite was one of the most aclaimed movies of the year. It wasnt a "surprise", so much less "upset"
Oh Gayle, you've missed a lot of opportunities watching so many great movies outside Hollywood
See this is prejudice they titled the video Parasite instead of giving it the segment it deserved they covered the whole Oscar in it.
so proud 👏👏👏
- AmericanKorean here
How lazy must people be if they don’t even want to read subtitles? Languages aren’t even a barrier for those who don’t make it one.
Shouldn't someone that is a Hollywood reporter know to say "Joker" instead of an incorrect title "The Joker"
Lmao, didn't know reading subtitles would be such a big deal for US citizens. When I first watch a movie at the cinema in the Flanders region in Belgium, they have 2 subtitles (Dutch and French) for movies in a foreign language.
I've been watching english-spoken movies & tv series with subtitles since I was about 14, get over it
Do Americans realized that people outside of America have been watching American movies with subtitles?
Did she just a big UPSET. Parasite deserved to win just as much as 1917
why are Americans so quick to celebrate people of different skin colour but immediately shun movies that aren't in English?
It's so interesting to see how people like Phoenix and Pitt really believe that anyone at all is interested in his political beliefs. If anything, it gives Trump even more credit than he already has. Showbusiness is a platform for glamour and all sorts creativity, but please leave politics where it belongs: Washington.
I find I pay more attention to films with subtitles anyway, as I have to be looking at the screen all the time to know what's going on. Anything in English I can look away momentarily pick something up or say something to somebody and still be able to follow the storyline and what's happening on screen.
They don’t like reading subtitles probably because they cannot read English well.
Upset? It was the best picture. Undeniable.
It's not an upset win, they well deserved it!
KUDOS TO 봉준호 감독!!!!!!!!!!!!!👏👏
The conservative Academy Awards in the United States left a historic moment beyond their league. But Grammys have failed to break down the barriers of language, and in music that is free and beyond the limits of communication. What a pity it is this?
I don't really mind reading subtitles. I Love Korean movies especially Train to Busan.
Director Bong is so cute, he's so candid OMG HAHAHAJAHAHA
Making an American remake in order not to need read the subtitles is the apex of the American sloth, seriously.
No way this movie should have won over Joker or 1917. Ridiculous.
