I’m with you Abby trusting Josh with finding out about this frame flex frenzy. I trust Josh as well. It might be a Michigan thing lol! We are both from Michigan. He’s not far from where I used to live. I think he’s like an hour or so away. I would trust you both too as well with this too!
If folks don't have camping reservations yet for the eclipse, they are going to have a hard time finding a space. I started in 2022 and the first two places I wanted in Texas put me on a waiting list. I started the minute the Texas State Parks site opened for reservations at campsites along the path of totality. I had to go through more than 10 parks before I found a single site available starting on April 1st for 2 weeks. Sadly, it made me wonder if there were folks using bots to grab sites to resell them. Many of the private parks in Texas have jacked up their rates and are asking $1000 or more for three nights. Having heard stories about places running out of gas and terrible traffic jams around the time of the 2017 eclipse we wanted somewhere that we could settle in and enjoy the event. Great podcast! Thanks for all the info.
Well the GD issue is interesting. But without knowing all the specifics it's really hard to know what is the root cause. One of our first campers was a Coleman Cheyenne. Coleman had this wonderful ABS roof, one piece, it was supposed to be the best. Well, years past and they failed, pretty much all of them. You would see popups going down the road with big tie straps around them because the roof was so bowed out. I understand that our old $6,000 popup is a little different then a $100+K 5th wheel. But at the time it was frustrating. You would have to cover your camper with a tarp to keep the rain from soaking into the camper. Years passed and Coleman replaced the roof, it took months to get an appointment. What I'm getting at is having owned RV's for 25+ years and owning a popup, hybrid trailer, trailer and Class A motorhome you will have issues, some major like what some of the owners are experiencing now with their GD 5th wheels and some minor. Oh, want another issue? Look up Workhorse brake issue. Brakes failed, people spent thousands on new rotors and calipers, it took so long for them to issue a recall. I had the luck to have that issue with our Class A. Want to keep RVing fun? Keep your job, your checkbook handy and have plenty of cocktails. Cheers .. Oh the campgrounds. That's another day.
Great video. Warning to people travelling for the eclipse, you may be just sitting in traffic. I live in Cleveland & there a lot of events planned, campgrounds & hotels sold out & authorities are advising people to hunker down, get 3 days worth of household supplies & watch from your backyard! Cell service may also be affected due to the influx on people on the systems. I did get my approved glasses & can't wait after hearing your previous experience.
Major cities are going to be so busy! It’s like prepping for a major storm. Enjoy the event from the comfort of your space if you can and thanks so much for sharing what’s happening around Cleveland. That’s really good to know! -A
I remember when I was kid there was a solar eclipse. We were not to look up at the sun at all. We were swimming in my friends pool but told not to look up. They didn’t have proper sunglasses out yet. Then a few years later Bonnie Tyler came out with the song Total Eclipse of The Heart. lol! 2017 I hadn’t met you yet. I was I see. Your bus home. I don’t remember if you showed pictures of it. I would love to see pictures of it sometime.
My "day job" is running a small literary museum and we have almost 60k artifacts. We are always trying to spotlight them in some fun way and love to share them with people who visit! Thank you for appreciating the work that goes into it!
On these frame flex problems one must ask what is the percentage of those issue is abuse? What percentage is people not truly understanding the load capacity of their rig ? What percentage of these rigs are or have been damaged in some way? What’s the percentage of those whom take their rig off road when these rigs aren’t designed for the National American sport of “Hold my beer and watch this” . Look at this issue like how the automotive industry is looked people go out and spend a lot of money to tear their new vehicles up for validation from social media or to look cool then when it breaks they cry warranty. You guys made great points on social media drama.
Frames are weak 3/16 " is not enough going down the road. As a 2014 Grand Design Solitude 369 RL owner. Our frame Twisted cracked shackles broke in Alaska in 2018 not overloaded. If the insurance would have paid it would have been 4800. But since we paid out of pocket they only charged us $3,500. They put 2 by 2 square tubing across the RV and then quarter inch plate steel in between the i-beams welded it all the hangers put new Springs on put it back together. Safe travels from show me RV Adventure Clayton and Denise. We had ours fixed at a simi Truck Repair shop in Anchorage.
We kept saying we wouldn’t bother with the eclipse…you know, “what if we go and it rains?” “It’s not really worth a 3 day drive (each way)”…and on and on. Then we saw about 80% of thenlunar eclipse and it was do freaking cool! So yes, the family trip planner says we ARE going. (We’ll be at a honey bee Harvest Host who is letting us stay 2 nights!) Hope it doesn’t rain or my dh will say he told me so. 😅
The coolest eclipse sight I saw last time was from a colander. Each small hole acted as a pinhole projector, so there were dozens of images all over the ground.
I think you guys are way off base. Yes, YT's are using it for clicks....but I can tell you there are probably so many Grand Design owners who are unaware of the "failed frame". I purchased a 2015 Momentum 380 new in 15 and within 10,000miles it had frame issues. Never had a SxS in it, only scuba gear. I know someone else who had a 2014 Solitude with the issue. Is it Lippert....well...paying welders $15 an hour (several years ago) is telling. GD under designing a frame may be a real issue, too. It seems like you are discounting this issue and frankly, I think it is much bigger than what is being reported. Think about it, GD made a huge statement up front with service and perceived quality, built up a very healthy company and then sold. That speaks volumes.
Are you aware of anyone actually having the problem or is this all hearsay? How many times has this occurred? Problem with the internet is one large mouth spreads a concern through 10,000 people and suddenly it a huge problem.
I was in a TT campground three weeks ago and there were two with the bottom of front cap off with broken welds. One was a second owner who paid over 15K and was trying to fix an issue created by the people fixing it. Another was looking and showed us the breaks. The cost of fixing and the loss of resale, as well have been substantive for both. That’s all I know about it.
I have definitely had several people reach out to me with this problem, and I've talked directly to some dealers about it. It's certainly something that's happening, pretty much only on the super heavy fifth wheels. -Jason
@@vtmkb My big issue with them is the total silence on the issue. They are not to be trusted. As to the frame and size, you have a good point about Lippert. This is not the first time they've had frame issues.

More than just GD. Our Alliance had frame issues also. But they were quick to schedule a factory appointment for a fix.

Jason, you stop and write down the number…lol I always snap a photo with my phone…lol that observation is so right and hilarious

We have this issue and turns out that GD did not attached the side walls to the Lippert frame. As second owners they said tough luck
Grand Design has been removed from the list of possible next RV.
GD is fine. What you need to avoid is full profile RVs from any manufacturer using Lippert.
