This is the first time Ade has properly talked about Rik since his death and it's absolutely heart wrenching. For years he often avoided it or said he'd come to terms with it, but it's clear he's never gotten over it.
I don't think you ever truely get over it if they are special to you, you just kinda adjust to them not being there in your life anymore, but I bet that kinda deep friendship would take a while to adjust to not have around anymore.
yeah, i think this is the very 1st time he has opened right up about Rik, From what i have seen from a clip of Bottom exposed, he mentioned that their friendship was frayed a little, when he died. Which will hurt Ade even more, plus its coming up to 10 years of Rik death and a documentary too on Bottom. Which will be hard for Ade to talk about those memories with Rik not been around anymore. I don't think Ade really has gotten over the loss of Rik, and i recon he never will. They practically grew up together.
Just went to "An Audience with Adrian Edmonson" at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. He spoke about his book, "Berserker" and his memories of Rik and ended the show to the best of my recollection by saying, something to the effect of: I never said I loved Rik. Men of our generation are dinosaurs. We didn't express we loved each other, If I could reach out to the 50+ men in the audience, and depart one thing, tell your best friend you love him. He raised his glass of wine high in the air as he exited the stage.
It's not nice to hear how hurt Ade still is, but there is beauty in hearing that timeless affection they clearly shared and that we were lucky to witness.
Ade opening up about losing his best friend and finally talking about Rik after 10 years, must be really therapeutic for him. It's devastating to hear him to be still broken up over it.😢❤
I still watch Bottom and The Young Ones to this day and I'm now 52. I remember waiting up to catch the episodes on TV. I also remember buying the dvds too of both series with my first wage pack and still have them. RIP Rick. A fan forever.
People say The Young Ones has aged terribly and no longer makes sense. I disagree - it was just very much of its time, and even now it stands as a showcase of what these guys were truly capable of.
Yes we all loved Rik so much. They brought us so many laughs and in a way that was so unique. Lots of the lines from Bottom and The Young Ones are in our family vocabulary…..”nought nought …nought nought nought!” ……….”polo?”………….”I’m great on the phone”……..”I’ve made you a pickled onion saaaaandwich!”
I met Rik on Waterloo station back in 1987. I didn’t know whether to approach him or not, but he noticed me looking and he promptly said, “I’m not made of bronze, ya know!” giving me that goofy snotty grin. I laughed and went over and we chatted for a good ten minutes. When I said I had to go he shook my hand and we said our goodbyes. As I walked away he shouted after me saying “Don’t you want an autograph?” again with that goofy sarcastic grin. I said, ‘No, it’s ok, but thank you’ I put my hand up and smiled and he said “Ha! Peasant!!” and he laughed, waving back. I will treasure that chance meeting forever. I miss Rik so so much. It still feels cruel. Rest in peace Rik, you legend.

I'm 64 now and if I could give young kids growing up some sound advice on what's the secret to being happy, what really matters in life. It wouldn't be great wealth or status, it would simply be what you hear echoing in Ade's voice here. It's the relationships you form with your friends and the experiences you share together, especially the ordinary days where you're just laughing until you think your sides are going to split. Great friendships flood your world with light and warmth and carry you through the darkest of periods in your life. People often go in search of happiness, but in many cases it's right there in the friendships you form taking that journey from childhood to becoming adults. So hold on to those special friendships you make, because they're very precious and the main key to being happy. It's never too late to form special friendships either, I see it in the programme 'Gone Fishing' with Bob and Paul and for me it's why the programme has become so popular, because their friendship and love for each other is so genuine.

Bless you Ade, we feel your loss too. It must have been so very hard for you, like losing a brother. Rik will always be remembered as the great genius that he was.❤❤
It’s very interesting that he completely loses it when he talks about Rik’s mum, seeing as he resented his own parents deeply. I resented my father for leaving me at a young age and whenever I see or hear anything about the loss of a father figure it affects me deeply even though it was 40 years ago. It’s funny how something like that can trigger the inner snot monster. I wish I could give Ade a hug. He really is one of the most influential people in my childhood and I’d love to let him know. I miss Rik madly so I can’t imagine how terrible his loss is for such a dear friend. It’s really very sad indeed. “Exploding bricks! BRILLIANT!!!” ❤❤

It's the love and brotherhood of an amazing friend that he misses, anyone could see Rik wanted to entertain the world, and Ade although they had their fallouts, he still.lobed him, and so do we
It wasn't just the end of a brilliant partnership, but also of truly profound friendship between these two... I feel so genuinely sad for Ade, such a brave man to share this heartache 🙏🙏🙏
Ade was a very lucky man to have such a friend and partner like Rik. We were all lucky to have such funny men that made us laugh. At least much of Rik’s life’s work is preserved for us to revisit. “Have we got a video”?
Just watched Hooligans Island for the umpteenth time and still laugh out loud. What professionals these two were and yet they made it look so easy. I miss everything they accomplished together and to this day me and my kids (now in their 30’s & 40’s) often use mannerisms from their shows. Comedy like this never dies and I so wish we hadn’t lost Rik so early. Much love to darling Ade it must be such a great loss for him to bear even all these years later. 😢
Rik's death was such a tragic waste of a massive talent. I always loved anything he and Ade were in, from way back in my early teens. Now that I'm the same age as Rik was when he died (56) I can see just how young he was. One of Britain's finest talents.
I now and again tear up, over my best ever friend, John Vernon Jacob, when he passed, he wasnt just a friend, he was my right arm, my Brother (i never had) my bestiest friend ive ever had, yet hes gone, well done Ade, in having those tears, it shows you loved him, more than anything, and the two of you were village idiots that this world needs, RIP Rick M, we have lost a genius
If you wernt around in them times I just can’t explain how important and brilliant Bottom was to us young lot. Couldn’t wait to come into school and talk about it the next day it was just brilliant. And everyone liked it from all walks of life, us wanna be rude boy black boys loved it, the reebok classic wearing football fanatical white boys loved it, the girls etc it was massive! After all these years of seeing Adrian as Eddie attacking and being so cold to Rik as Richie, its so heartfelt to hear him crying about Rik after he's gone.
Rik and Ade more like family than friends, because their bond was so special. The only episode of Bottom where Richie, and Eddie really got on for me was Carnival.

You both gave us unrivalled laughter and for that we will be forever grateful
RIP Rick, I didn't know you but God you were my mate
Nice to hear this........Both legends in their own lifetimes...
Thank Adrian and Rick for making us laugh all these years 🍺🍺🍺🍺
It's the love and brotherhood of an amazing friend that he misses, anyone could see Rik wanted to entertain the world, and Ade although they had their fallouts, he still.lobed him, and so do we
And a sidenote.....I could listen to Ade all day long, his story's are funny, well remembered
I look forward to reading his book. 😁😁
A man breaking down is so much more powerful. I miss Rik so much
It wasn't just the end of a brilliant partnership, but also of truly profound friendship between these two...
I feel so genuinely sad for Ade, such a brave man to share this heartache 🙏🙏🙏
We will all miss Rik until the day we die. Then we might be able to get an autograph
He'll be the first autograph i'm getting in the afterline, along with Lemmy.
RIP . Thank you for the lovely childhood memories 🙏
Ade was a very lucky man to have such a friend and partner like Rik. We were all lucky to have such funny men that made us laugh. At least much of Rik’s life’s work is preserved for us to revisit. “Have we got a video”?
Such an amazing duo.
Imagine having Rick mayhall as your best friend.
God bless Rik and ade.
Rik was the best friend of the nation. I don't know anyone who doesn't admire Rik Mayall.
Was lucky to meet Rik a couple of times. Didn't know him but loved his work. Gone far too soon.
Brothers and more!
I miss Rik genuinely funny guy and a great human being.
Legends the both of them.I grew up watching them and loved them so much.
Rik's death was such a tragic waste of a massive talent. I always loved anything he and Ade were in, from way back in my early teens. Now that I'm the same age as Rik was when he died (56) I can see just how young he was. One of Britain's finest talents.
Brought up watching these two legends my mum met ade in Blackpool with his band she said he was lovely
Can’t explain the 90s if you wasent there I just can’t. It was a calm feel before the storm but we had the best of everything in our own way!
100% mate. Not to forget the old skool rave scene, the days when starbursts were opal fruits, streets of rage and road rash on sega. Then resident evil on ps1 in mid / late 90’s.
They were the days
I cried when I heard this on Desert Island Discs. I just wanted to reach out and hug Ade and not let him go
Adrian Edmondson seems like such a sweet man.
As soon as his breathing got erratic and he said "his mum", I had tears in my eyes.
Ahh, RIP Rik. Sorely missed.
Legends
I grew up watching these guys, love them so much its genuinely heartbreaking to hear ade cry like that, chin up guy, we love you ❤
No greater Friend. One can tell that he becomes unaware he is live on air, and his deep genuine emotions take over. You will both be together again.
This breaks my heart ❤
After all these years of seeing Adrian as Eddie attacking and being so cold to Rik as Richie, its so heartfelt to hear him crying about Rik after he's gone.
Rik and Ade more like family than friends, because their bond was so special. The only episode of Bottom where Richie, and Eddie really got on for me was Carnival.
I made an effort to listen to this while I was working ,it was quite hard to hear so thanks for posting this.....
Rick and Ade were a massive part of my growing up....
Boomshanka
Thank you so much for posting this. It's so sad, but it shows how much he loved him. Bless you, Rik and Ade.
Thank you for watching, and listening.
Breaks your heart to listen,, miss him and them together
My Rick impersonation complete with Churchill Victory sign stopped me from getting bullied at school!
I might not have made it out of the 80's were it not for my parents being out of the room and leaving the TV unguarded that night.
"Hands up who likes me?" ✌️😁🇬🇧
RIP Rik Ad loves ya. We all loved ya. Thank you so much for the comedy. Thank you so dam much.
Bless him, everything they did together was pure gold. Their legacy will live on and on forever.
