He didn’t say a word. I paid for my sandwich and left. RIP Rik, you are missed.
If you watch the credits Lord Flasheart plays himself. That in itself is a masterstroke of genius. One of the greatest characters to ever be portayed on the BBC.
It shows a matter of absolute self confidence that Rowan can give his co actors the ability to show their stuff. Flash heart and Sir Percy were two of my favorites and Lord Melchit well all of them really including the German Officer.
That first scene is amazing because Blackadder actually outwits him and Flash knows it, and ups the ante by just knocking him cold. It's completely in character for both men and a testament to the writers and actors. Brilliantly done.

Blackadder was a special comedy. One of those rare programmes that your parents would inexplicably let you stay up late to watch. The next day everyone in school would be talking about what happened and endlessly quoting the more famous funny lines. And then there’s those really special couple of episodes, where the hero of ‘The Young Ones’ returned to our lives again briefly and we all got to piss our pants once again at his madcap antics. @Chris Blackadder and Bottom are classics because they are funny not for any other reason. A hit Edinburgh show used to be rewarded with a radio pilot and transfer to TV if it’s any good, see League of Gentlemen for details, but these days they will be lucky to become a jobbing writer or get a spot on QI.
I have watched and adored British sitcoms my whole life. Blackadder is easily one of the all time greatest sitcoms, and Rik Mayall - especially in Blackadder Goes Forth - could easily be the greatest guest star in the history of sitcoms. Just incredible, and one of the reasons he works so brilliantly is because he has a deadpan Rowan Atkinson in the same scenes. It is pure comedy magic.
Rik Mayall in Blackadder 2 and 4 is quite simply the funniest, over the top, performance I think I have ever seen on TV. Even now after all these years I love watching repeats of Blackadder but these two episodes make me laugh out loud. A massive talent taken from us too soon.

I was going to correct you with shows like Big Train and all the others that other people have listed but i realised that they're good but not necessarily Great. I'd argue that Alan Partridge is a great comic creation but not really a series.
Elizabethan Flash is the funniest scene I've ever watched, for most of the scene Rik's fake moustache is coming off and I imagine the director would have wanted to shoot again but this was the only take where most of the cast held it together from laughing. I can well imagine there were dozens of other takes where the tache stayed on but everyone was dying of laughter. Just all round brilliance from everyone.
The paste on his moustache fails during Blackadder II. It slows him down not a bit; he just leaves it to flop around on his face. I crack up every single time I see it! You can notice it after he thumbs his nose at Melchett, but keep watching. LOL!

Every now and again I revisit Blackadder and Fawlty Towers because for me those two shows are timeless and incredibly funny. And sometimes I just watch the short compilations we have of Rik Mayall performing Lord Flashheart. Such a great performance. Way too funny, wish he could have stayed around longer.
The only time rik isn't shouting is when ade is doing his bit they were one of the best comedy double acts ever with anarchy running through there veins
