Now of course there's a lot of skill necessary of the whole band to be able to get away with that but nevertheless I find it charmingly amusing

It is especially muddy sounding when the pianist leaves the pedal down during a modulation. It's like, OK, which key is it? Depressing the pedal is a joint together, and releasing it acts as an erasure. Errol Garner never gave any thought to the pedal, he would just press it at the beginning of the song and leave it down the whole time. This really muddied things up for him. Garner claimed he never had any music lessons, and took this as a point of pride. Big mistake. A single lesson could have pointed out this infirmity in his style, a weakness that plagued his whole career.
Wayne Shorter's music is as enduring as ever. A musical genius in the truest sense, the Jaco of the saxophone.

You need to pump the pedal more. Don't just leave it depressed. It muddies things up if you just leave the pedal down.
