Wayne Shorter's music is as enduring as ever. A musical genius in the truest sense, the Jaco of the saxophone.

Than you, Tony. This one really gave me a kick. I just love Wayne and Herbie. How about some analyzing of Joe Zawinuls "expressions" (solo-frasing)?

Huge fan of your content Tony! I was wondering what your thought process was at 15:07 during the A13b9 when you played an Ab7/Dalt LH voicing instead of A7

Uh... I think I screwed up. I thought it was A flat. The print's too small! Bad font!! I got a million excuses lol

The dirty "secret" of Jazz - mistakes are made lol
FR Coltrane would be open that he sometimes got lost and just kinda trusted McCoy Tyner and his bassist to guide him when that happened. Now of course there's a lot of skill necessary of the whole band to be able to get away with that but nevertheless I find it charmingly amusing

You need to pump the pedal more. Don't just leave it depressed. It muddies things up if you just leave the pedal down.

@@TonyWinstonThanks for your comment in reply. I pump the pedal to mark the end of a phrase and the beginning of the next one. It is especially muddy sounding when the pianist leaves the pedal down during a modulation. It's like, OK, which key is it? Depressing the pedal is a joint together, and releasing it acts as an erasure.
Errol Garner never gave any thought to the pedal, he would just press it at the beginning of the song and leave it down the whole time. This really muddied things up for him. Garner claimed he never had any music lessons, and took this as a point of pride. Big mistake. A single lesson could have pointed out this infirmity in his style, a weakness that plagued his whole career.

@@johnnydawson7675 I always found his songs to be more colorful than a lot of pianist, + penthouse serenade shows his pedal skills dont you think ?
