    For anyone that likes the idea of Sharry Baby but doesn’t have the room, consider getting an Oncidium ‘Twinkle’. A much smaller plant, which still has fantastic smelling blooms👌

    Very informative. Thank you, you have a lovely collection. I think that Oncidiums are one of my favorites.

    Hi Light,
    Yes it sounds like the Oncidium is done blooming, it is safe to cut off the spike. You will now go into grow mode and it will produce another bulb or two. The new bulbs flower once mature next year. Give them plenty of light and water... Happy growing!

    I bought an oncidium this year and I'm still watching and hoping for spikes to show. I watched this video to see if spikes emerge from the top of the pseudobulb as I've noticed a bulge on a couple of mine. But here I see they come from between the leaves. Maybe I won't get spikes this year. Never mind.

    thanks for sharing all your tips, am about to repot (for the first time) my oncidium and several phal. Thankfully I pruned the flower spike as per your advice, and it's put out lots of new growth so am quite pleased with myself (as a novice orchid-er). Your videos are most informative, and you've a lovely collection there to reinforce your advice!

    Sounds like our winters, right around zero, usually warmer if it is cloudy.

  • @BradsGreenhouse

    Hi Richard, tough call. Yes the orchid would have a better chance without the blooms. Blooms take energy and stall the next bulb from growing. Very tough call...

    thanks for the advice Brad. It's warming up here in UK at last, although still living on the windowsill 'she's' been sat outside a few recent warm sunny days. I'm hoping to get her out into greenhouse this coming week (night-time temps still a bit too low/risky). The new growth is increasingly bulb-like so I'm pleased, and grateful for your information etc.
    I've acquired another 'reduced' Orchid (Brassia) which is looking good so now need to search your great channel for tips Brassia care.

    Whenever you cut the spike of an orchid, you should treat the cutting afterward instead of just leaving it be as-is. I moisten a little bit of cinnamon, creating a paste that I apply to it. This seals up the cutting to eliminate any chance of infection.

    Thanks got replying so quickly. It's on the window sill in my bedroom so it's got pretty good light but its never cold in my room. I don't have a green house unfortunately and I wouldn't want to put it out side cause its really cold in England right now lol

    How long should your blooms last? I’m new to this type of orchid. I had one that bloomed and it was gorgeous. The blooms only last about 6 weeks. I would of thought that they would have lasted longer.

    Newbie question: I've read from numerous places that Oncidiums don't bloom from the same pseudobulb twice. Is this true for all Oncidiums? I've googled "Oncidium specimens" and seen pictures of huge plants with maybe a dozen spikes at a time, shooting out in all directions. Are those just not true specimens?

    Lovely Oncidiums btw... two per bulb is great!

    Brad - at 3:38 in this video when you are pointing out two bloom spikes on the pseudobulb, I see a little nub on the right side of the pseudobulb at the top, where the upper leaves meet the pseudobulb. What is that? My Sharry Baby has started growing these bumps on the top of 3 pseudobulbs and I don't know what they are.

    Hey Brad what a massive huge spike, flowers must have been lovely. What happens if an orchid puts out a flower spike before the psuedobulb is mature. I have one on an oncidium and it looks like it's not going to be very big with three flowers. What will happen to the psuedobulb? Will it just start the cycle all over again?

  • @bikerchickfrommars
    @bikerchickfrommars 11 років тому

    well, it's still alive! But the more I read and look at it, the more I think it's done as Myouchan88 and gone straight to new growth. I'm also wary of putting it outside due to the continuing cold weather here in UK but will try to do so once the hard frosts we're experiencing calm down a bit. May try greenhouse in a week or two, but to be honest I am really pleased it's putting out all this new growth. Will be moving it to bedroom window though as this gets most light until can go outside.

    Few questions please, as I'm very new at this. Does one spike only bloom ones? Mine dropped its flowers, can I confidently cut it off? And also, how to care for the Oncidium that stopped blooming but now busily growing some sort of shoots - not of the pseudobulbs, but next to them? Thank you very much.

    Brad I have a sherry baby and almost lost it due to root loose. Surprisingly it was able to send out new growth. The question I have is, is it best to let it bloom naturally or cut the spike off. I know it's best to let it fully recover before letting it bloom. I only have one new growth and one back bulb. What to do?

  • @2007words

    I have a Nia Rose Oncidium. It bloomed and the flowers fell off about 4 weeks ago. Is it still to late to cut off the old spike? I really don't know how to do it. I did download a instruction on how to take care of it, but it said nothing about having to cut it. I am really clueless when it comes to orchids. The only thing the care instructions said was to water it every 7-10 days (not how much to give or how to water it), to put it in a room with lots of light (not direct sunlight) and a have good ventilation. So I am just basically wondering, what do I do with it now?

    Mine has two bulbs: one hasn't bloomed and was old and wrinky when i got it, the other one right in front of it did bloom, it's now in growth cycle and it grew out two new shoots which are already fairly big with about 5 leaves each. Can I divide it and remove the oldest wrinky bulb and just leave the younger one with the shoots, or should I leave everything as is?

    I just found a Odontoglossum/Oncidium at my job in an office building. It's got 4 pBulbs and one had two spikes another one spike. They just finished blooming. I'm cutting off the spikes. I am near a north-facing window in N.California and want to keep it there. How do I feed it? How do I water it? There are a couple of brown leaves at tip, can I cut them? If so, how?

    Sorry for the super late reply haha I left my oncidium alone and its actually developed an entirely new psuedobulb. What should I do with it now? Do I repot it with two of the older bulbs or leave it to develop new bulbs? (websites I've been scanning say to pot at least 3 pseudobulbs in one pot). Will it produce a new spike now that the bulbs appeared?

  • @Myouchan88

    Can I get some advice. My oncidium has create the new growth but doesn't seem to be creating a new spike (the new leaves as coming out the bottom of the old pseudo bulb) there are what looks like new roots coming from the bottom. Is this normal on the regrowth stage before reflowering?

    I have a very impt question.please help.I have four bulbs.and I think two have flowers.so once they the flowers die, I should cut off the cane right? How bout the bulbs? Will they live like for a long time and new bulbs continue coming out? I don't want to run out of space in the pot.and I don't want anymore of the same pot of plants.as I already have other variety.

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  10 років тому

      I would leave the bulb attached as long as you can, once Oncidiums are done blooming the spike can be cut off, it wont bloom again.

  • @techprojm

    My oncidium is growing a new shoot like the one you showed first, its about 8 inches tall. I thought I had a problem with one of the old bulbs and I cut it off, turns out it was fine but now I'm afraid that cutting that bulb will stunt the growth of the new shoot. Have I ruined my chances at a bloom spike this year?

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  9 років тому

      The back bulbs do provide energy but if the front bulb seems healthy, I wouldn't worry too much

    Would it be best to keep orchids (Vanda and Oncidiums) indoors during winter (gets below 10C at night) or are they ok to keep in the veranda where they still get some light? Also, can I just water them once a week?
