NEW Kuretake Graphite vs Derwent Graphitint Paint Pans

  • Kuretake recently released a new line of colors in their Gansai Tambi watercolor paint line-Graphite! Being that the Derwent Graphitint pencils are some of our favorite colored pencils we also decided to purchase a set of Graphitint paint pans to compare to these new Kuretake graphite paints. Let’s see how they look and perform on 3 different types of paper: watercolor, toned-tan and black. And if I had to choose just one-either the Kuretake or the Derwent, which would I choose?

I just watched another artist do a comparison of the Gansai graphite and that artist first wet the paper and then lay down the paint and gently spread it down…what a difference and they are amazing! And the green is deeper and beautiful. They are not opaque unless you lay it down thick as shown here.

I think the key for lighter values is to put the graphite in a mixing pallette with more water. If you want different values of the same color, you can have different amounts of water in each pan.

The sponge is there to keep the paints moist until the next painting session. You moisten the sponge and it creates a wet atmosphere inside the pallet and keeps the paints moist.

I absolutely love the derwent graphitint line, in fact when I started mixed media about 18 months ago that was they were the first products that I bought. From the small amount of use I’ve given my Japonesque shadow colors( $11 on Amazon) mentioned in previous post, that I think are pretty similar to these Kuratake, I’ve found that they simply will not look very good on their own without a good bit of dilution because they’re just too dark to even show their individual colors to any great effect. They look great on their own if you can dilute them to a light watery color way or use them to “shadow” brighter colors. 👍😉 p.s. On the whole, I prefer the Derwent Graphitint (sp?) too. I have a set of 4 or 6 ? of the pencils and they’re ok, but I think I would prefer the Graphitint pans with all those colors! Thanks!

Happy to see, that you are also on the mend and are doing fairly fine. Hope you get even better soon.
Instead of a spoon you can also try to polish with rounded metal dotting tools. Than you can use this more detailed and precise and you can achieve different textures on your work. A rounded metal end of a knife or so should work similar.

I've tried both (thanks Sketchbox) and prefer the Derwent because it's more vibrant when you add layers while Kuretake seems too prone to get dark rather than vivid. However, the Kuretake paints are easier to create contrast, since they can be super dark in a single layer. I think I might use them together in future paintings to complement each other's strengths. Oooh, one more thing. The Kuretake paints will last way longer since you need much less paint to achieve that dark color and I find that it's better to have a palette to water down the colors to achieve the desired color but with the Derwent I apply the wet paint directly to paper since (again) they are vibrant rather then dark when in full strength.

On the topic of water soluble art mediums, I thought I'd share some information on pastels that may be worth some experimentation.
Nearly all types of pastels, with the obvious exception of oil pastels, are made up of pigments and water-soluble binders like gum arabic or gum tragacanth. This actually makes them water-soluble, although not to the extent that proper water-soluble pastels (like Neocolor IIs) are, which means that the pigment will rub off if you apply them too thickly. When applied thinly, they make a decent substitute for watercolors for underpaintings and backgrounds in coloring pages.
Pastel pencil marks have been known to activate with water as well. I know for sure the Stabilo CarbOthellos can be used in this way, and other pastel pencil lines may work as well.
Since the pigment-to-binder ratio for PanPastels is so much higher, it's probably not worth trying to activate them with water as they'll rub off too easily.

Oh my goodness so Glad you are better. Poor little Rose, my Morkie, Sofee, has been having movement problems also, she'll be 12 in November (Rose looks like her mommy) the wonderful woman we get our dog food from said that she gives her aging dog Cosequin and it helps him immensely. So I got some for Sofee and she is right, she is now running and playing and her back legs have straightened out. I found the best price to be Costco online (they have it in the pharmacy but only for the big dogs.). You give her a 1/2 of one everyday til the first package is gone then a whole one from then on. By the time we were almost done with the 1st package she was doing so much better. Wanting to play fetch and running all over. Sure wish I could find some for my knees. The Boku-Undo E-Sumi Watercolors are absolutely beautiful they will completement each out wonderfully.

Hi! Glad you all are feeling better. Graphite is a form of carbon. It forms layers, which is why it has replaced the metal lead (Pb) in pencils as the writing medium. As part of its physical properties, it is reflective of light. It is NOT a metal. It is carbon, definitely a nonmetal. Hope this blurb helps.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think the Derwent product is ink/graphite based (like the Intense product line) where as the Kuretaki is pigment/graphite based; the Derwent product is not rewet-able once dried. It is permanent, at least that's my understanding. I don't own this product, but I have some of their other paint sets which are ink based and permanent. For those interested, there is also another product that I came across called Liquid Pencil that comes in tubes rather than pans. Thank you for the review.

I have not gotten to try either of these sets, but after seeing multiple reviews and videos am suspicious that the kuretake one isnt actually graphite and instead was made to mimic the boku-undo shadow gansai set. Its gansai paints mixed with sumi-e ink, so theyre dark and moody but have a big drying shift and the only sheen is from the paint itself because gasai paints can be shiny when applied thickly

When you recommended using the Derwent Graphitint Pencils for shadows, did you mean to use them dry and unactivated? I understood it as having the option of adding finer detail to the piece, touching up, or what have you. Pieces where you want to add the fine point of a pencil, while remaining in the same palette.

@@juststartingover2735 So, I use the pencils for details and filling in smaller areas. Or even for sketching out leaves, rocks etc., since they’re water soluble they end up blended in nicely with the rest of the areas. I then fill in or blend with the pans. You can sort of think of them as watercolors but you do have to “commit” more as they’re not so easy to lift. I think they compliment each other very well and the shades match.

The kuriaki paints come in even more colors! They act a lot like gouache in that they can be very thick and opaque or you can water them down and use them more like watercolor. They even have a small set that are 6 colors that are mixed with like a black or charcoal grey so they're very dark and moody without the graphite shine.

Helpful but the inset of you blocks what you are demonstrating and seems really unnecessary.

You need to stop having yourself in the little screen taking up so much of the video. It was annoying. You can't even see all your swatches.
