    The Graphitints are quite interesting, I think. But it could be fun for sketching on the go, combined with a pencil and a small sketchbook.

    I bought this set few months ago and I love it! I've had the pencils for very long, never really used them, but the pans inspired me to create instantly. I love the subtle shin the paints have on paper once dry, it reminds me a bit of some Primatek by Daniel Smith. I had no problems with graphite rubbing off as I framed my piece. If anyone is interested to see I have it on my Instagram, it's a negative painting of some fishes (October 6).

      @@Julie-vy3oz I used them like I use watercolours. I'm not a professional by any means, but for my type of art it worked well. For me it was quite unique for the muted tones and the graphite shin as I said, unlike the watercolours I have. It's a lot down to personal taste I suppose, but at least here the set cost me around 25 EUR so, not a huge investment.

    Thank you for this review and demo. I have the pencils and I love them for their moody colorfulness but, like you, I'm not sure what additional value the paint pans have. I get mark-free gorgeous color by taking a wet brush and picking up pigment directly from the tip of the pencil. The color comes out less graphite-y (clear and pretty), but of course this method is best for small areas and accents because each swipe only picks up a small amount of paint. I will be interested to see how you like the pans as you work with them more. 😊

    What I like about these is that you could rub them just like pastels AND you can erase them with a regular pencil eraser. So instead of using water to lift color & overworking the paper, you can use a regular or electric eraser to carve tiny details into your paintings. Oh and the graphite in the paints leaves a subtle, yet beautiful sparkle!

    This set is amazing to do actual book-like "scene" illustrations, rather than abstract florals or traditional watercolor. First you sketch on an iPad to get clean lines (very fade lines), and then you print that if you have a pigment-based printer (so no need for a transfer process). Then, you go over the outlines with the right color pencils from their set (different colors per item in the illustration), and then you use the same color from the paint set. As you paint inside the lines, parts of the line will get wet and other parts won't. This inconsistency (it will effectively make the lines thin and thicker at different points) is very desirable -- it'd be like having used a brush to make the lines, rather than a boring same-thickness-throughout pen. I hope I'm making some sense what I mean. The muted colors are also very desirable for "scene" illustrations. Look at the old illustrations of Yelena Bryksenkova (in her pre-gouache period, from 2010 to 2014) to get a feel of the kind of look you can get with this set.

    Hello Irit, I’m sorry I haven’t commented in a while - just been very very busy with end of term. These Graphite pans are beautiful; so moody and what gorgeous colours, but like you as I already have the pencils and lots of beautiful watercolours I’m not sure how I would use them so I’ll be interested to see how you use them. One thing I noticed is that the pencils do seem to leave a mark behind when adding water so maybe that’s the extra benefit of the pans over the pencils. Thank you so much for sharing all your lovely videos (and emails) as they have certainly made me happy when I saw them pop up onto my list. Have a lovely week, 🌈🎨 Valérie 💕

    Oh, I love Graphitint pencils. I have six colours. I do not have pans but they look lovely. I love that they are muted with a little graphite sheen to them. Perfect for murky landscapes and even portraits of humans and animals. The only trouble I see with them is the lightfastness if you are going to expose your works to sunlight. All graphitints seem to be dye-based, so one needs to run their own lightfastness tests on them.

      Ratings are available on the manufactures website with enough digging. But make sure you get the right one. The ratings are different from the pencils and the pencils ratings have also changed over time. I had some pencils years ago when they first came out and they would discolour inside a sketch book. Not even a reaction to light therefore in that case. I think they’ve continually upgrading them.

    These colors are lovely. Just the subtle jewel tones I gravitate towards. I'm leary of jumping on board though. I was so excited about the inktense, but was really underwhelmed. Which is unusual for a Derwent product for me. I also wonder about how lightfast they are? Would it be safe to sell a work that included these? How well do they play with watercolor? I am very curious, and like you, Irit, I love the lack of browns. Hmm, Merry Christmas to me? I'll have to check out prices in the US. Often European brands are cheaper from Jackson's, even with expedited shipping. (I'm looking at you, Schmincke!)

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  3 роки тому

      According to Derwent's lightfast ratings the Graphitint is very lightfast, with most pencils rated 7 or 8 (excellent) and a few 6/7 (very good). It really appears like the pans are very similarly if not identically formulated, so I don't think this is a concern, but of course the best way is to do an independant testing...
      Yup, yay for no browns ;) They play very well with watercolors. Enjoy shopping and happy holidays!

  • @djhadaverde
    @djhadaverde 3 роки тому +1

    Nice video as I was curious about this set in particular. You gave me the idea of another possible dupe for this set and it could be to use a graphit watercolor like the Van Gogh or Viarco's and mix it with all the watercolors you are interested on create: with your purples, reds and pinks, greens, blues... So you can avoid the erasing some with your fingers as they are sealed by watercolors. Could be interesting. Thanks!

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  3 роки тому +2

      I think any dupe from the classic watercolor world would work just as well if not better. I don't like the Van Gogh graphite (too shiny and not granulating enough), but Viarco's product could work well, and if you can find it, Darivan has a liquid pencil that is permanent (there's also a water soluble option).

    Wow, that's a nice selection of colours, none of them seem to clash with each other as sometimes some more vibrant colours seem to do 🥰 Probably the graphite undertones they all seem to share. Definitely remind me of those Van Gogh dusk colours, though those seem darker when painted with the concentrated colours. Or my Boku Undos - though those are only 6 different colours, so the palette of those is a bit more limited 😊

  • @justacatwhocantype

    Those look lovely, and i did not even know they existed. Are they new? I only ever knew of the pencils. I think though that I will stick with just my regular watercolors, and when I want a graphite look to them, I just mix in some watersoluble graphite pencil. I love this effect, and so I sawed off a piece of a woodless watersoluble pencil, stuck it into a pan, and it's now part of my watercolor kit. That way I can have any color I want with a tint of graphite.

      Yeah the lunar colors are a good choice, or Rembrandt's/Van Gogh's dusk colors

    • @YourMajesty143
      @YourMajesty143 3 роки тому

      Lunar Black is too granulating to recreate these. I think it's better to try using graphite to mix in, or buy a single graphitint pan to incorporate into your paints. I'm not sure if it'll be the same since these colors seem to be more colorful than most dusky paints that have black in them. Also, these paints have a subtle sparkle in them that the Lunar Set by Daniel Smith lacks. It reminds me of the gemstone Primateks. Maybe you don't want that, but I think they create lovely dimension in the light. Plus, Daniel Smith can vary between staining to non-staining & can vary in how they lift with water. The graphitint paints can be lifted with a gentle pressure of an eraser, especially if I don't want to add any more water to my paper & worry about overworking it. Pricewise, they're cheaper too. Derwent gives you 12 pans of beautiful colors for $20, whereas Daniel Smith will cost you about $8 to over $16 a tube, depending on color or ml size. It's an easy decision for me. I'd rather buy DS colors that I know no other brand has, and buy redundant colors from other slightly cost-effective vegan brands.

    I have tried and tried to get this paint set but unsuccessfully. I searched at Jackson’s, Jerry’s, Blick, and Derwent’s site and everyone is sold out with no expected availability date and this has been for at least two and a half months. I wondered if it’s discontinued

      I got mine from Derwent's website Paula a few weeks ago. But yeah, it doesn't seem to be very easy to get 🤷‍♀️

      That's a Chinese style brush. Just search "Chinese calligraphy paintbrush" into Google, Amazon, or Ali Express and you should be able to find tons of them in different sizes and colors.

    I wonder if I can get the graphitint effect by using watercolor and then adding pencil thereto?

      Perhaps graphite powder?

      I do that, and it works great. Get a watersoluble graphite pencil and just mix it with some very transparent watercolors. The outcome are muted, gorgeous colors. Depending on how you mix the paint and the graphite, whether you take your wet brush to the pencil or whether you scribble on your palette or the paper first and then dissolve it, the outcome will look differently. I totally love doing this, it's a really cool technique.

      Yup, I think Schnörkel ajneF's idea is a good direction. Something like Viarco's Artgraf pencil tin would also work, or Derivan's liquid pencil (comes in jars and tubes but is hard to find sometimes).

    Can I ask your opinion?! I have the vibrant set from Van Goh but I miss some "basic" color like magenta, ochre, browns, I want to buy from aliexpress because in Brasil art material is expensive, I'm in doubt between cotman, white nights, sonnet, lukas and paul rubens , from the brand that you try which one you recommed the most?
    great december

    Thanks Irit. What is your recommendation for watersoluble pencils? I think you mentioned some midway, were those derwent too?

      Hmm... I don't use them as much as I used to, but the Stabilo All pencils are fantastic, the black is intense and the graphite is great too. If you want regular watercolor pencils then my fave is Caran D'ache museum aquarelle (pricey...). The graphitint are a nice variation of a watersoluble graphite pencil. hope that helps!

      @@iritlandgraf yes, very helpful, I remembered that I have a few colors of stabilo all, a museum aquarelle, an albercht durer and that I don't really need a set, maybe just a few more colors.

      Really? I was surprised at how much more vibrant they are. I thought they would be 12 shades of grey but they aren't.

      I think you have the graphitint **blocks** which have more graphite in them and seem to look the same in hue as each other. These graphitint **pans** are definitely different, bc the colors are absolutely individual from one another.

      @@YourMajesty143 I even ended up taking photos and sending to the supplier who sent out a couple of replacements because they couldn't tell them apart either. It's the bottom row mostly for me. I think I got a duff set. I ended up replacing a couple of colours with inktense and watercolour to give a more functional set. The sparkling is really pretty. When the plague is over I will try and find someone with a set in person to see if theirs is better and if it's worth buying again.

      correct. A spray fixative is the easiest IMO Kristina, any art store carries them.
