      So, students can mark themselves present? Can they change it if you mark them tardy? Can they go in later and mark present even though they didn't attend class that day?

      It’s awesome!!! Also gives them a chance to check in with me and just connect by saying hello or asking a questions. Sometimes
      My classes are almost 80 students so it give me a chance to connect with them even for just a second.

    Is the attendance tab standard with Canvas? My Canvas does not have an attendance tab.

    What a great idea to have students check themselves in

    Hi Ashlee - I teach middle school and we are transitioning to Canvas this year. I have a watched a few of your videos and know these are going to be a life-saver for me as I learn the system! I had a question about your attendance video that I was wondering if you might help with. I loved your idea of having them tick off as they entered the classroom. I was wondering if there might be a way to include a function where they could select how their feeling or complete a quick self check-in as they completed their attendance. My guess is this would need to be an actual assignment, but thought I'd ask if there might be an easier way for me to see how they are starting class each day. Alternatively, is there some system where they could "check-out" as they leave class? Thanks in advance for your time and assistance!

    Is there a way Canvas checks the attendance on its own, not necessarily me checking the attendance. Say, if the student logged in within the course schedule, the student will be marked present. If the student logged in after the course schedule, the student will be marked absent. If the student logged in 30 minutes after the start of the class, the student will be marked late. Thank you very much Ms. Ashlee for creating tutorials such as this. Your tutorials help us a lot! Have a great day ahead!

      That would so amazing if Canvas could do that! Unfortunately, Canvas doesn't have a way to "react" or "respond" to students logging into the platform at this time in my experience. I do hope the are working on this feature though along with their own video conferencing app. It would be amazing to have that build into Canvas! At this time, you still need to do it manually but at least it's all still housed in one place per class which makes it a little easier. Less paper always helpful for me so I don't have notebooks, gradebooks, or other papers laying around.

    I sometimes have 50 or more students (sometimes 70 or more) and want to be able to take attendance efficiently. I like the check in model. But I also want to be able to ask them questions in class or present a poll that requires some response which is kind of a way to take attendance. The problem with that approach is that some students will text their friends who have chosen not to attend and those absent students will login in (or already be logged in) and complete the poll or quiz. I realize that I can do a head count in class and compare that to number of responses but was looking for different ways to get attendance. Could be that the check in model is the best. I suppose I could combine it with the pop up test / quiz approach.

    Old video, I hope you see my question.
    Is there a way for me to see globally all students' attendance in a Canvas "spreadsheet"? Or is it only student by student, day by day? I hate having to click back day by day. Frequently I want to see a global look, especially because my classes are T/Th or M/W, so I hate having to click through an entire week, one student at a time, for example, to see the last day of attendance for each of five or six students. Seems like there should be a way. Help!

    Really very helpful! Thanks for your clarity and great production values. One question -- is there a way to link attendance with the gradebook in case some points are given toward the final grade?

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      Yes! After you take attendance in that class for the first time, it will pop up under Assignments as Roll Call Attendance. Then you can edit that for points, not graded, or however you wish. Thanks for asking. I'll make a video about this in the future in case others are wondering as well.

    Great video. How do you manage taking attendance in a large online course without taking up too much time at the beginning of your class to read the names of each student?

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      If it's a large class and it's synchronous online, I don't take attendance. The other option you might try that I use to do: save the chat box. At the beginning of class ask them to answer a question you ask via the chat box. Give me word that expresses your feelings on last class topic? Then have them put their answer in the chat box. Then download/save the chat and then you can go back after class and count attendance from that.

      @@VirtualTeachingPro Thank you. Excellent Idea. I am assuming you can download the chat after the class has ended, correct?

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      @@njb6858 It depends on your settings. Can you go into the settings in your account and set it to auto save/download the chat for every class so you don't have to remember. Zoom keeps doing updates so I would go into your settings and check out what options you have. If you save your meetings to the cloud then you might be able to go back into them and download that way.

    Hello, is it possible to create an individual report with the student's absences? I need to know what classes the student missed.

  • @reiregua859
    @reiregua859 4 роки тому

    Or could it be linked with one activity (syncro or asynchronous) in a way that as they answer the discussion box, it will be linked with the attendance. If the student answered within the course schedule, they will be marked Present. If they answered after the course schedule, they will be marked absent. I agree with what you say that with online classes, we dont pay much with the attendance but it is a need for me to monitor who are with us real time and to identify who are not with us with our activities. Thank you very much Ms. Ashlee!

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      oh this is a lovely idea! I wish it worked that way with the attendance function but it doe not...yet at least :) With the jump to so much of us teaching online across the world hopefully this will help Canvas understand what functions can be added and included to offer more support and ease of distance education in the future. I know they currently creating new programs/apps/additions right now but I"m sure it just takes time. You can see how much students log on and for how long, what pages they are viewing etc. I'll add a video of that to my list to create a tutorial for you!

    • @VirtualTeachingPro

      in my experience it does not apply to the grade. It remains as a badge inside the students info but it doesn't change their grade if the attendance is set a graded. You can always go back in though and adjust that in the gradebook though if it's excused. hope this helps!
