    Good idea about backing up your courses! That is why I keep my online instructional videos as unpublished videos on UA-cam. It would be nice to use my schools video storage because students don't have to deal with commercials or falling down random rabbit holes, but I rather they suffer the commercials and rabbit holes than I lose all my work if they decide not to rehire me one semester. My school just switched from Blackboard to Brightspace and I think it probably would have been easier to rebuild in Brightspace using your system rather than importing everything and fixing mistakes.

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro Місяць тому

      I hear you on this with videos. I have done similar with a few courses as well. I wish UA-cam didn’t put ads on channels that weren’t monetized but they shifted that to all video content a few years ago. I used to host some videos on UA-cam back when they had no ads on channels not with the partner program here and it was great .

    • @Teacher_Tangents
      @Teacher_Tangents Місяць тому

      @@VirtualTeachingPro Oh yes, I remember that. For years I said I would never monetize my videos so that there were never commercials, but after they started putting commercials on everything, it doesn't matter. LOL! I am still not monetized but if I can I will. 😊 And one note, I don't know if I have this wrong but it seems like the videos I embed in Blackboard or Brightspace don't play commercials if watch in the embedded state.

    I love the idea of using a mobile phone to record video while traveling, I will have to try that out!. No extra "stuff" to carry and quality video. But I am more a fan of the Shure SM58 at one quarter the cost, similar sound and easier to use, but I do keep it off camera because I am not a fan of the look of the hand held mic. Our district is getting rid of Canvas at the end of this school year.😢 Is there a way to transfer everything to Google Classroom or create a free Canvas and add students manually? I don't want to lose all my modules 😢.

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro Місяць тому

      sad day. This is a big shift to be honest. I've done it but it takes lots of time. It's not easy. I need to make a whole video about this. I would not suggest going the free route with Canvas. It is extremely limited and then if you manually add students into it from an institute, district, college, etc you are violating a ton of laws and going down a path of no safety for you and for them. Always stick with the platform the school provides and approves...even if you dislike it. You can't download a canvas course/s and then upload into any other platform. Nothing will transfer in or out if that makes sense. You will want to do this the long way to be honest. Think long term. What do you need to be able to re use all that curriculum development moving forward and how can you create a hub for it all to re purpose on other platforms or in person? That's where I would start. I"ll make a video about this soon. hope that helps a little.

    Hello, this is great content! I learned a lot from your VDOs. I noticed you already have small mic on travel, but if I may, would you consider having a portable lav mic? For instance, the super famous and reliable DJI Mic 2, or super small, button-sized Hollyland Lark M2. Both has great sound quality and works with phones/laptops, etc. Thanks again for the knowledge & wisdom, cheers!

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro 2 місяці тому

      Hi there. Glad you find the content helpful. Yes, I have used lav mics before in the past. Some of my videos here on UA-cam you can see the lav mic I used to use in the past. It's a good set up for the right person and right tech needs. For me, I do a lot of singing in my online sessions so the compression isn't as great with a lav mic. It is excellent for speaking though and does have benefits. If you know anyone who works with these specific mics and wants me to test them out please feel free to have them reach out to me via email. Thanks for this suggestion.

      @@VirtualTeachingPro You hide it very well with the clothing choice. I learned one more thing already! 😆😆. I thought you were always using the same mic, and yes with high dynamic voices like singing I wouldn't use a lav mic as well.

The new Apple phones just have such great quality built in mic and camera that it’s almost unnecessary for certain tropes of content. Game changer!

    Hi Ashley! It’s been a while since I’ve written to you, but your “How to Set Up a Canvas HomePage” is my go-to video every semester because I always forget how to do that with each of my classes. Ha! I’m sure you don’t recall our correspondence on your UA-cam channel a couple of years back, but I’m an adjunct for a couple of major college districts in Orange County. I’ve been teaching online since March 2020, when COVID-19 hit. And I’m still envious and ridiculously happy for you with your career choices and changes. You clearly knew when it was time to leave the party. I know first-hand that being an online educator in any college system can sometimes be restrictive and frustrating. Here’s where I find community colleges and students today. Community colleges don’t make as much money for non-credit classes per student. So, I’m seeing fewer classes offered; I’m also beginning to see fewer students enrolling in online classes at both of my districts. Maybe education is changing. Potential students are finding other ways to reach their dreams and goals. On top of that, some students at the CC level have difficulty in understanding what a student does, or entails. Some students think it’s easier to learn online. They confuse convenience with consistent classroom participation. Yet, warming a classroom seat will get you a degree in today's world. Now, don’t misunderstand me. Teaching online has allowed me to rent out my home in Orange County and purchase a sweet condo on a golf course in Rancho Mirage. Not to mention that I’m a hundred miles away from my work - I ONLY work from home. It doesn’t get better than that. Yet, I feel something is missing. Isn’t it any wonder, Ashley, why so many teachers leave the field after five years? I’m so sorry for this long text. I’m here doing some grading on Labor Day, and I saw your video. It’s 108 degrees out here in the Palm Springs area. So, I hope you don’t mind me bending your ear. By the way, I use a “Blue Ball” microphone, but I forgot that I still have a RODE in its packaging, which I bought a few years ago. I guess I need to unwrap it. Thanks again, Ashley! 😊😊
