      I really like using journal entries as assignments right now. It offers the student a way to obtain a "grade" but also offers them an outlet to write free hand without worry of specifics. I have them write what they worked on that week and what progress they made or what challenges they discovered with their work.

      I created text entry assignment for my students, but when I want to grade them using 'speed grader', ut says I need to create student group. Are there any ways I grade the students work on speed grader without me creating student group?

Keep it simple and effective and add as you go with the online and tech side. I've got a couple of playlist series for Canvas and one for online teaching if that's helpful. Thank you for this! I am developing proficiency with Canvas rapidly because we're 100% online right now. However, I'm having trouble with the difference between submissions from an external tool using Google Drive, URLs, and file uploads. I thought the external tool would be best because they can write in a template I make for them. The problem is that some students couldn't see my feedback on the PDF that it turned it into. Do you already have a video on this topic? I really wish I could see this from the student's perspective, and masquerading as "Test Student" doesn't work because it doesn't show me the Drive options. Right now I'm stuck asking kids to share their screen with me and squinting at the options.

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      Yes, this can be a little tricky indeed. I always suggest staying within Canvas versus using external tools like google docs, drive, etc. I use either the built in quiz option and edit it for the assignment I'm creating like just an essay and a few matching or true and false questions OR I use the text box option so they just type the assignment in the box OR I use the upload file option and make it required that it's a PDF so I can make notes on it in Canvas speedgrader. I know it feels limited but the less options they get the better actually. It really does simplify it for them and for you. It's much different than an inperson class I know. Hope this helps a little!

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      Hi there! good question. Canvas orders the pages alphabetically but you might try starting the title of each page with a number and then it would order it in the way you set it up with that title. Thank you for your video! Do you know why when in student view the assignments have "next" or "previous" tabs? What can I do so they have to do something then go to the next piece? For example, first watch the video, hit next, now complete the assignment?

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      Create modules for this! When you create modules it gives you the next button and shows the students a flow that you've specifically set up for them that day or that week. It's probably showing the next / previous tabs and just flowing through all the assignments in that group.

    Even though I have used Canvas for five years, watching your videos has made me a more sophisticated user of the tool. My question for today is this. I get your idea of creating a module and using pages to create a flow for the instruction. But when it comes time to ask students to complete an assignment, do I just switch from selecting new page to selecting new assignment? What happens to the "next" button at the bottom of the page?

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      Happy to help! I put the assignments at the end of the module. If it's within the module then the next button will keep leading the students through the entire module through pages (with content), discussions, quiz, assignments of any kind you create. That module is like a flow through capsule for the students. Anything you put in there should be easy for them to follow through until the end. Create an assignment then put it in the module in the place/order you want them to take it. I like to add a checklist at the end of each module so they can double check that they've completed all elements.

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 роки тому

      great question Cynthia. You'll need to create an assignment and somewhat do it over since it's a different format than just a page. What will save you time is opening two windows of canvas in that class and copying and pasting the text/info that you've already created in the page and then pasting it into the assignment. That does save you some time at least!

      you could link to the google worksheet but they still need to go into google out of canvas to enter the info through google. hi Ashlee, i've just got started on using canvas as a tutor. i was wondering if you could guide me on creating a page or assignment that is more like an Activity Log that i can have students put in the title of a task, describe the task, upload a photo and then self-evaluate their own work. i then want to be able to allow tutors to provide feedback to the students regarding their work. i was thinking do i need to create a template for them to be able to use and upload as a file or could i do it directly on canvas? if you have a video on this i apologise for not yet finding it.
    i would also like to be able to have each log for each student tracked and be able to be reviewed and not edited once tutor has given feedback... i think this will be a whole different area i need to look into 🤔

      Happy to be on this journey with you! Tip: you can export and import blackboard course items into Canvas if that's helpful and might save some time. Canvas has so many more elements, functions and options than blackboard so just take it one step at a time. Happy teaching!

      Great question. A pdf doc is universal and the easiest way to make sure you as the teacher can view, make notes and grade their work. You might be using a tablet or PC or Dell computer but your student uses a MAC and uploads the file as a pages doc that you can't then open on your computer. It takes you time to send them a message asking them to re upload it in a pdf so that you can access it and it takes the student time to export the file to pdf and then re upload. So much easier on both ends to request all files are PDF so it is accessible to everyone and saves that back and forth time :) hope this helps!
