I mention both sexes because a lot of men (especially young ones) are embarrassed to speak up or leave a toxic relationship because they think it makes them look weak. It’s obviously a huge sign of strength to get out of a bad situation. I find domestic violence extremely disgusting and cowardly and therefore all the comments here obvious. However perhaps some might need some reinforcement knowing it’s ok to be a man and seek help and that it’s not a sign of weakness. In fact for anyone leaving a toxic relationship they should be praised and admired for their strength. What’s obvious to you might not be obvious to another person. Obviously.

Thank you so much for being so empathetic to Maddie. The only safe way to leave someone who has put their hands on you is either with no warning or in a group setting. Like "only go back to get your stuff with a police escort" group setting. She cared for him so much that she wanted to be honest with him that she was leaving, and now their two kids won't have either parent around anymore.
Even then they can still come get you if they know where you are

Instead of pathologising 'the world' with narcissism, it'd be more helpful to acknowledge that there just isn't enough mental health services available to support people with psychological issues that prevent them from being able to have functional relationships.

people also need to be held accountable for not wanting to self improve or look towards supports when offered.
The only types of people who entertain narcissists are those with unresolved issues and toxicity themselves.
Narcissism may be running amok, but there are always fools that will bend over for them & create offspring with them who will more than likely become narcissists or suffer from other psych issues.
The cycle never stops and that's because many adults rather become victims or play the victim than do the work to become a healthy adult and choose better partners & father's/mothers for their innocent kids.

From personal experience with a sociopathic malignant narcissist (formally diagnosed in 2005), she did NOT willingly "tell" him that she was in another relationship. I guarantee you that he got in her face and FORCED it out of her ... then became full of rage and planned her elimination. I experienced this myself, and it was only AFTER hours of demanding interrogation that I told him (now ex) I wanted out permanently. We have 4 children together ... and he still threatens to kill me to this day (10+ years after our separation). I don't believe for one minute that she told him to rub it in his face .... absolutely no way!!!

That or he was tracking her, stalking her, going thru her stuff and he put it together himself. Been there too. Even when you’ve never cheated, you’re always a cheater, always the one needing checked up on. It’s torture.

I thought I could help him change because I was young and ... dumb honestly. Narcissists will never change because it's part of their personality. Also, I learned in counseling to never blame a victim for not leaving soon enough ... clearly, you've never been in that position. Good for you.

So the authorities would think it was someone else’s car since license plate didn’t match Maddie’s. So non-clever of him.

He may as well also left a business card on her body to "throw the police off"...using his own business card. It doesn't sound like he had a profession anyway, but yeah, that's the smarts of this guy.
That's because there *is* no logic to it, given that the plates are in his name. That's right up there with wearing contacts instead of glasses when robbing a bank so you won't be recognized.

As a person who was able to survive a similar relationship the only explanation I can give for continuing to stay in the relationship for so long is, hoping or believing that person would eventually change for the BETTER

There were so many warning signs for this young lady. Unfortunately this is a common outcome in many cases.
He was obsessed with an incompetent murderer and then lived up to and exceeded those aspirations. This is a slam dunk case because the killer is an idiot.

Very sad story with a lot of interest in Canada. Kelly Ellard has had further challenges since she was granted day parole including domestic violence against her ex-spouse.

The title grabbed my attention and so, here I am!
I think that it would’ve been a good idea in high school to give some real life courses. History, literature math is traditional school courses, but students need a few real life courses in their last year of high school such as financial courses so they don’t get too much in debt and also relationship courses so they know how to steer clear of someone that might treat them badly.

If you feel there is danger in that relationship. Get out fast and far. And always give others information on your movements. Bring someone you trust with you,when you’re making a move. And prepare yourself in the best possible way to defend yourself.
I agree she should’ve left when he first started abusing her and not told him she gone. I think it’s harder when you have children to leave and that you probably don’t wanna believe that your husband will do that again if he apologizes.

Do not warn a perpetrator of DV against you that you are leaving. You might as well walk into the wilderness, hand them a blunt object, say "kill me" and turn around.
"They wouldn't go that far"--you thought they wouldn't go so far as DV but then it escalated. It will escalate again. Do not ever be alone with that person again. Leave silently while they aren't home and with several people to help, take everything with you, do not let them know where you went. If you can, go somewhere with great security and/or very far away.
