Her work is incredibly revealing about why we humans are where we are at today. It would be a fantastic discussion! Love your work! We need your mind in this world.
The critical difference between Mayim and Yuval is she takes all day to partially express or address the crux of the matter where Yuval gets there far more directly and clearly so he illuminates complicated concepts with simple yet ample language. Einstein said if you can’t explain it in simple words you don’t really understand it. But that is the difference between an academic intellectual like Mayim and a creative genius like Yuval.

I always appreciate Yuval’s insight on various aspects of our life and the novelty of his ideas. I guess simple explanation is likely to be true and complex problems generally have simple solutions, we just need to have a different perspective.

I've been fascinated by a recently aired documentary called Picture A Scientist. Ms. Bialik's opening remarks while only tangential triggered my memories of that documentary. I had momentarily forgotten that she's a neuroscientist. TV reaches more people than novels for I suspect obvious reasons. Reading - or LISTENING for that matter - on their own, in my opinion, engages the imagination FAR MORE than watching TV.
The format is REALLY GOOD. So much better than looking at them through a computer screen via a Zoom call. Better to look at and easier to listen to. Good job people.

Mayim is the first person that I felt could keep up with Yuval. Most sobering thought form Yuval, that it is not possible for the less developed world, to be brought up to the living standard of those of us living in the developed world. Would that be true, even if we abandoned trips to Mars and wasteful affluence?
Both are wonderful speakers. I respect them. However, Mayim seems confused and she focused on superficial issues in her discussion. Yuval, on the other hand, appears very confident and talking from reference-based mature content.

I love YNH and always love his conversations. Mayim Bialik is very nice but not in the same league as Yuval. I felt she didn’t answer questions directly and promoted herself continually.
Even I am open minded person I do not agree that lies will make us go far . Of course I know that imagination in life is needed , because that helps us to be more creative . ( Imaginations - yes lies - not ) My respect to the lady . I believe also that we all should have freedom of choice . That what democracy is about . Of course we all should have in life principles of moral behavior .

This might be the first time I don't agree with a Yuval sentence. I think books and readings are still the number one tool to create and tell stories in the most powerful way and let the human imagination do his beautiful work.

For this purpose, the study of the history of the evolution of life on the planet is an important tool. Well, it is a very flowery speech. Are you just saying that human beings are limited in what they are capable of doing and subsequently comprehending in order to percieve enough to be effective and efficient in whatever their intend of achievement could be? Could we call it in short "experience"? And, then, for the rest of it "the application of such an experience"? If yes, here is my question: Do you think the experience is transferable, or not? And then, What do you think is a purpose of being if not gaining, understanding and accepting the experience?
My first time with Mayim and I am staggeringly engaged with her charm, smile and intellect. But i hope her inate compulsion to you know to say "you know" is self improved...you know.
I adore and respect Dr. Harari for his book “Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow” but I found it ironic that in this interview he was asking how come people can be very reasonable (I thought “logical”) in some intellectual areas of thought and then completely refuse to educate themselves in other areas. But then he seriously suggested that he would like to create/deploy some “device” ala browser ad blocker which would prevent him from learning “false news...” Isn’t it obvious that Dr. Harari would delegate to someone else to identify what “false” is, and attaching the device with someone else’s definitions of what false (and right vs. wrong) is to his brain, removes his ability to reject such false news logically?
The other comment is that even when we think we are being 110% rational... we are not. Emotions guide our decisions, and that is what Phineas Gage case is all about. We can read the finding of Antonio Damasio about the somatic markers. This bring me to a quote from Lopez Rossetti, "we are emotional being that reason and to my own quote: "we are all believers", whether we admit it or not. It is all in the dose (Paracelso), the degree and the timing

People like Harari needs to have balanced view of the so called biases. People who see other peoples bias against their own truth are more biased. IMHO, seeing the truth inside each others bais is the balanced view.

I've watched Big Bang Theory a few years ago. I didn't know that Mayim Bialik is a scientist. That's really wonderful. The fact that the producers of that tv show chose a person like her due to her background.
It looks like the algorithm that controls our clicking preferences might be the responsible for the growing polarization in ideas, as the Internet is showing me what I want to see, what I agree with and what confirms what I think, narrowing my perspective
The hidden debate on religion was fascinating. Yuval was CLEARLY attacking Mayim's position (orthodox jew and phd in neuroscience) by opposing faith vs reason. He has this very simplistic, flawed, new atheist approach of "everything can be put into equation, rationality is a clear path". Yuval's thought experiment about putting a hat that detects irrational behavior is very telling of how he views the social layer. As Sam Harris he probably thinks that ethics can be mapped from facts, and thus robots would be ideal humans. Mayim views the social layer as comprised of irreducible social and ethical variables. She understands that factual truths about our brains don't optimize social interactions and ultimately well being in general. Yuval's equation is simply wrong.
His story about the hat was to show how technology could be used for the wrong reasons by politicians,dictators etc. he certainly doesn’t think robots would mahe ideal human,. Much of what he tallks about is the dangers in AI and while it will be make decisions affecting lives, it will never be a conscious entity withfeelings.
Thanks for this conversation. Sometimes my mind play with the thought : If the planet could talk or schedule the wishes for a better planet, what would it then tell us? We already have a lot of knowledge about the problems for the planet to struggle and now it seems the Earth is answering us. Is it time for a PLANET government ? Would that be an anthroprocene responsibility ? Would that give us a new frame of thinking ? I often think, when we talk about sustainability - the mindset need new stories to build new actions and societies. When we talk sustainability - the frame is still the economic growth, it is not what we need to do to serve the planet and all the species. How could we maintain the knowledge we already have and at the same time disrupt our daily way of living ?

Yes. But when your own comfort is chocking/suffocating someone else and their children, dont be surprised when you're attacked and changed by force. Imagine slave owners saying "I am comfortable as I am, so I refuse to let you and your children be free." Things don't usually bode well for comfort at others' expense for too long.

You know...........I am not a college graduate or anything of the like, but I do personally believe in certain absolutes which require us to give genuine thought and reason to and a large dose of faith as to who we choose to be as individuals and how we treat one another. What you need to understand is that compassion towards animals do not necessarily translate to compassion towards fellow human beings. Hitler was a racist, so are many Hindu nationalists vegetarians etc. On the other hand, you can be a carnivore, but still be compassionate and considerate towards your own species and many other species as well. People who eat meat do not arbitrarily throw a stone at a cow or a sheep. Finally, intelligence and compassion are entirely different traits and do not need to coexist.

I couldn't stop the cognitive dissonance between hearing the actual conversation and staring at the bow on her headband. I have a 6 year old student who wore an almost identical version and I kept imagining her saying Mayim's discussion points.

Critically viewing this interaction, it appears that Mayim prefers an ‘optimistic’ view of the world rather than a ‘realistic’ one that Yuval talked about to support her scientific answers to the many questions asked and this seems ironic in its very nature as one would expect a scientist and one who has been popular to work in the field of neuroscience to side with realistic and pragmatic understanding than simply an optimistic view of our world.
Dude - Change equals increased risk. Change almost by definition equals more energy expenditure (to adapt to it) and a higher risk of this energy going to waste. Change equals increased uncertainty, always, without exception. Change equals unexpected outcomes, always. These four aspects of change alone make even the idea that having an _attitude_ towards change or a decision to make, completely wrongheaded. To ask these kinds of questions betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the cost/benefit analysis made by every single living thing.

I have never thought that I will see Mayim Bialik and Yuval Noah together. Both are my favorite.

After this introduction, it is easy to understand that Harari and Bialik's effort aims at achieving a utilitarian reading of that segment of Reality in which social events take place. At the same time, it is easy to recognize that they are navigating in uncharted waters. Indeed, understanding social dynamics requires managing information that neither of these two characters possesses. Thus, for example, when Harari postulates "good will" to "order the social panorama", he seems to be unaware that social dynamics depend on a series of factors that need to be previously known in order to postulate alternatives for action. While it is true that we cannot expect to know all the factors involved, for the sake of effectiveness we can focus our efforts on trying to know what the main factors are. For this purpose, the study of the history of the evolution of life on the planet is an important tool. Thus, for example, a review of the history of evolution shows us the root of what we call "Power", and what an important role Power has played and plays today in shaping society. We do not need access to "the ultimate truth" to improve our effectiveness. Yes, we can be more effective and efficient if we make an adequate use of Reason, starting by focusing our Attention on the search for "the main variables" that condition a particular segment of the present, past or future Reality.

I adore and respect Dr. Harari for his book “Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow” but I found it ironic that in this interview he was asking how come people can be very reasonable (I thought “logical”) in some intellectual areas of thought and then completely refuse to educate themselves in other areas. But then he seriously suggested that he would like to create/deploy some “device” ala browser ad blocker which would prevent him from learning “false news...” Isn’t it obvious that Dr. Harari would delegate to someone else to identify what “false” is, and attaching the device with someone else’s definitions of what false (and right vs. wrong) is to his brain, removes his ability to reject such false news logically?
So much mental clarity and brain power!

We can read the finding of Antonio Damasio about the somatic markers. People like Harari needs to have balanced view of the so called biases. People who see other peoples bias against their own truth are more biased. IMHO, seeing the truth inside each others bais is the balanced view.

I've watched Big Bang Theory a few years ago. I didn't know that Mayim Bialik is a scientist. That's really wonderful. The fact that the producers of that tv show chose a person like her due to her background.

It looks like the algorithm that controls our clicking preferences might be the responsible for the growing polarization in ideas, as the Internet is showing me what I want to see, what I agree with and what confirms what I think, narrowing my perspective
The hidden debate on religion was fascinating. Yuval was CLEARLY attacking Mayim's position (orthodox jew and phd in neuroscience) by opposing faith vs reason. He has this very simplistic, flawed, new atheist approach of "everything can be put into equation, rationality is a clear path".
Yuval's thought experiment about putting a hat that detects irrational behavior is very telling of how he views the social layer. As Sam Harris he probably thinks that ethics can be mapped from facts, and thus robots would be ideal humans. Mayim views the social layer as comprised of irreducible social and ethical variables. She understands that factual truths about our brains don't optimize social interactions and ultimately well being in general. Yuval's equation is simply wrong.
My thoughts exactly.
His story about the hat was to show how technology could be used for the wrong reasons by politicians,dictators etc. he certainly doesn’t think robots would mahe ideal human,. Much of what he tallks about is the dangers in AI and while it will be make decisions affecting lives, it will never be a conscious entity withfeelings.
The lack of imagination about a future world government is sorely missing.

Thanks for this conversation. Sometimes my mind play with the thought : If the planet could talk or schedule the wishes for a better planet, what would it then tell us? We already have a lot of knowledge about the problems for the planet to struggle and now it seems the Earth is answering us. Is it time for a PLANET government ? Would that be an anthroprocene responsibility ? Would that give us a new frame of thinking ? I often think, when we talk about sustainability - the mindset need new stories to build new actions and societies. When we talk sustainability - the frame is still the economic growth, it is not what we need to do to serve the planet and all the species. How could we maintain the knowledge we already have and at the same time disrupt our daily way of living ?

Yes. But when your own comfort is chocking/suffocating someone else and their children, dont be surprised when you're attacked and changed by force. Imagine slave owners saying "I am comfortable as I am, so I refuse to let you and your children be free." Things don't usually bode well for comfort at others' expense for too long.

I’m not saying there is no slavery around the world, of course there is, but that is down to the corrupt politicians. My heritage, language, beliefs, lifestyle etc are what I have ‘worked’ for, (and am happy with) and I don’t need some stranger telling me I need to change to suit their idea of what their life should be like.
If you want change, start with yourself, then your family, then your friends, then your local community, then the larger community. Once you have the ideal community you should, in turn, have the ideal life. I think you misunderstood... change is inevitable. Hariri is actually saying that big changes i.e., Russian Revolution are often more fraught than more modest ones.

She is so inarticulate and scattered compared to him. I have trouble following her bouncing from idea to idea and back again, but he is very clear and concise.

You know...........I am not a college graduate or anything of the like, but I do personally believe in certain absolutes which require us to give genuine thought and reason to and a large dose of faith as to who we choose to be as individuals and how we treat one another. That to do that one has to have a foundational base or core of proven truth that is relevant and to a certain respect, be therefore cooperative in treatment of our fellow man. No man is an island after all. This discussion is very, very good in that these two very likeable and highly educated people are speaking and talking WITH us instead of just AT us. I SO appreciate that! In such uncertain times, we need such discussions instead of the constant political and personal business of those in the entertainment world. Although I don't agree with everything said, I appreciate feeling that I'm "invited" to partake and reason with my fellow man on what's important to me, be he highly educated or just a sincere individual trying to make some sense of this world for themselves their family, their friends, their country.............the globe et al. @@deangah9220 i was going to mention hitler. I do not think the speaker would consider Hitler as compassionate. What you need to understand is that compassion towards animals do not necessarily translate to compassion towards fellow human beings. Hitler was a racist, so are many Hindu nationalists vegetarians etc. On the other hand, you can be a carnivore, but still be compassionate and considerate towards your own species and many other species as well. People who eat meat do not arbitrarily throw a stone at a cow or a sheep. Finally, intelligence and compassion are entirely different traits and do not need to coexist.

Critically viewing this interaction, it appears that Mayim prefers an ‘optimistic’ view of the world rather than a ‘realistic’ one that Yuval talked about to support her scientific answers to the many questions asked and this seems ironic in its very nature as one would expect a scientist and one who has been popular to work in the field of neuroscience to side with realistic and pragmatic understanding than simply an optimistic view of our world.

Dude - Change equals increased risk. Change almost by definition equals more energy expenditure (to adapt to it) and a higher risk of this energy going to waste. Change equals increased uncertainty, always, without exception. Change equals unexpected outcomes, always.
