Good interview, I dont understand why everyone is so negative in the comments. Just because he was bearish on crypto, the other stuff was still very interesting.
Because what he says merely propagates misinformation on AI. and his dystopian speculation is articulated without a definite solution. Worse, this guy whose expertise is on Folktale Studies merely prattles.

That portrayal of information as power struggle is simplistic. It is moreso that it affects the world and less so that one necessarily seeks power in disseminating information. Information asymmetries (panopticon, SEC concerns) are power, over some to the benefit of others, or to benefit all. Not necessarily conspiratorial. Just simply power.

As a collective, our evolution hinges on the truths we discover and share together through our actions and communication. These shared truths form the foundation of our progress. Any other information, if it isn’t part of that shared journey or isn’t relevant to our evolution, is just noise-subjective and ineffective. It doesn’t clutter or harm us because it lacks the power to shape our collective reality. The real danger is in assuming that this 'junk' information holds the same weight as the truths that genuinely contribute to our collective understanding and growth. Truth that matters is discovered in our shared experience and connection with the world.
Why don’t we have a forum that airs on a CSPAN like channel where 3 experts on each side of an issue makes an argument for their side to a panel of judges who are also experts in the field? If a topic needs several hours with intermissions, or days, those people can decide an appropriate amount of time, and then post the arguments, deliberation, and results online. That helps inform the public so we can make an informed democratic decision based on the best arguments from both sides when it comes to issues.
The distrust guy. Listening to him today, it's clear why he would say what he said then. I think if you had really gotten him rolling, you could have coaxed him to say something that sounded opposite on bitcoin and probably 35% of your audience wouuldn't be able cope with the narrative shift. Comments would have been off the chain. Just notes. Good show!
Truth is freedom and individual in that it is more difficult to bind ppl together with it. Lies and myth are the glue that binds and moves masses. I love it. And when he talked about type 2 chaotic systems, I imagine how the lies told masquerading as truth is a method to control the mob. I resent these lies as an individual but recognize the reasons for them as a citizen. I wonder what kind of world this would be if we could only disseminate truth.
religion is what creates a divide and causes conflict. but most people will never stop to ask themselves whether what they believe is valid or has any evidence.
It will. Since power will be concentrated in hands of few big tech companies (as it has always been) who can afford the cost of AI infrastructure and training and associated costs. Since AI will fundamentally change how we live, it will have far reaching consequences in terms of decline of democracy unless adequately regulated
In response to religion not owning mistakes, I think the Roman church admitted in 1992 that it was wrong to condemn Galileo for his support of heliocentrism. This is a clear example of religion acknowledging an error and re-evaluating its understanding of scripture in light of scientific discoveries. The Church’s eventual recognition of its mistake demonstrates its capacity to admit fallibility and seek reconciliation with both truth and science. Quote: "The Church’s attitude to Galileo was a mistake, and for this, we must humbly recognize it." - Pope John Paul II
I believe he's mistaken. The nature of most information is deeply tied to how we, as humans, function and interact. It's in our shared behaviors and collective experiences that we form an understanding of truth. Much of what we deem as true is what we share and confirm with each other. On the other hand, information that remains unshared or personal lacks the consistency to be universally true. The problem with speaking on behalf of the majority is that the speaker is always an individual, and the truth they present is inevitably limited by their personal perspective.
@DC-uc4sh How he refers to information is horrible. To consider all information equal first off, then say how we will be misguided by it is completely wrong. Information is not equal. That's number one. Our relationship to the information as individuals is where it gets messy because that relationship as individuals we have isn't more significant than the relationship we share as a collective to information. The problem isn't in the information. The problem is in the approach to the information he takes, as do most individuals. That mindset is more about reductionism. It's linear and simply incorrect. For him to claim he cares for humanity yet has still not shown he can see out the eyes of humanity in a more holistic way, is somewhat disappointing.
Hes a book writer. No more right than the revisionist , DaVinci Code. He is a revisionist polemic historian. Thats not bad. But having a point of view is a piece of it all. He knows that.
