    I love this video you made! It is fascinating to see how other zoos have their hippo enclosures set up outside the US. You took me on a journey! I have subscribed to your page and will be checking out more of your videos!
    I live in Cincinnati, Ohio, and we have one of the best zoos in the US. We have a huge hippo bloat with four hippos here. The bloat originally started with Bibi (female) and Henry. Bibi became pregnant and gave birth to a premature female who was only 29 pounds and six weeks early. Most Hippo calves are around 100 pounds when they were born.
    The vets did not think the calf (THE famous Fiona) would live. She was the smallest hippo ever born in captivity.
    She was given 24-hour care and was hand reared by staff. She did well for a few weeks and went downhill very quickly. The vets needed to run medicine directly through her skin to a vein to save her life. Hippos have very thick skin, and it is almost impossible to find specific veins.
    Thankfully, the zoo is one block from Cincinnati Children's Hospital, the top children's hospital in the US. They saved my daughter's life on three different occasions. My community is very fortunate to have such amazing doctors, nurses, and staff.
    Several of the neonatal nurses came over and were able to start a line into Fiona's vein, and she became a feisty, fabulous, famous hippo. She turned seven this January.
    Less than a year after she was born, her father, Henry, died. Our zoo had male hippo from the San Francisco zoo, Tucker, and who joined our Hippo Cove bloat. Within a year, Fiona had a new half-brother who was named Fritz.
    I love the setup we have here because the hippos can come right up to the glass on the wall and basically be nose to nose with people.
    Most of the habitats you show look a lot bigger than ours! I like the layout of the first zoo you showed.
    I never thought hippos (well, the babies) would basically be big puppies! I can not get enough of watching them!
    I will attack some links if anyone is interested. I do not want to try and pull attention away from the original video.

    My local zoo has the largest herd hippos in eaza and maybe even the aza with 22 hippos (non breeding) but they're also in a very large safari area with rhinos, zebras, Thomson's gazelles, Marabou, crowned crane, eland, wildebeest and waterbuck

    Fun fact about the enclosure at Wildlands. The location of Wildlands was in the past a second location of Dierenpark Emmen contected with a huge bridge and a own entrance. But the thing is, the current hippo enclosure was actually a pinguïn enclosure. Which you mention also in the video, but I just wanted to confirm that.

      The old Emmen zoo was split in two regions. The new Wildlands was built on the West part of the park, and the East Park was closed.

    When i saw the hippos at Hannover (later Antwerpen too) i was shocked how big they were, because we only have the pygmy hippo in Aalborg Zoo. And hippos, bot pygmy and regular are really some of my favorite animals. Though my only problem with the one in Hannover is that it's quite small, and has a lot of hippos (i've sent a picture in Discord) But you do get to go by it on a boat ride, so Zoom Erlebniswelt uniqueness isn't the only zoo. Great video ;)

    Heyo, back with my UK zoo enclosure/ho holding info.
    I have seen 2 Hippo exhibits here in the UK although there is a total of 4 holders.
    The better of the two exhibits I have seen is at Longleat safari park, which they rather strangely are mixed with California sealiobs due to them both living in the same lake. The hippo has nearly the entire lake to roam in and a large grassy area to spend time in too. Previously they had a a group of hippos but now they are left with just one. The only way to view the hippos, sealions, colobus monkeys that live on an island in the lake and gorillas that live on a fenced of area of the bank is by going on the zoos boat ride around the lake.
    The other habitat I have seen is at Whipsnade zoo and they have a medium sized habitat for their hippos, with a steeper land area and a rather small water area. They also have an indoor on show area next to the indoor on show for their Pygmy hippo, the on show indoor is quite small but considering they only have 2 hippos I think it is fine for them.

    I'd be interested to see zoos add some cleaning fish to eat the algae. Might help the visibility. Also in the wild hippos will open their mouths to let fish in to clean their teeth like an underwater dentist office, so it might serve as some kind of enrichment idk I don't work in a zoo (yet).

    I feel like hippos always get worse enclosures than other large animals like rhinos or elephants. Maybe it's because of the higher costs zoos need to spend because all of the water filtering stuff that is necessary.
    Of all the enclosures in this video I think Cologne is still the best one because it has the largest water area that is accessible the whole year, although the lack of any outdoor pool is very weird. Beekse Bergen and Gelsenkirchen have the best outdoor areas but these pools are not useable the whole winter (correct me if I'm wrong here). So I think in the Central European climate it probably makes more sense to have larger indoor than ourdoor pools for these animals qs they probably spend more time indoors than outdoors.

    • @justGoron
      @justGoron  9 місяців тому +1

      I'm not sure at what temperatures hippo would no longer be able to use their outdoor pools anymore. I feel like I've seen the hippos at beekse bergen outside in the winter often enough. I rarely seen them in their indoor area tbh. Overall winters lately have been pretty soft, so I doubt it's more then one or two dozen days a year.
      Still I'm inclined to agree, a mix of Beekse Bergen's outdoor and Cologne's indoor area would be the ideal hippo habitat for me.

    • @Jo_nas
      @Jo_nas 9 місяців тому

      @@justGoron Okay yeah maybe you are right and they don't have to be indoors the whole time. I only know from Berlin Zoo (my hometown zoo) that the hippos are never outdoors in winter. At least I've never seen them outside.
      And yeah I agree Cologne indoors and Beekse Bergen outdoor would be the perfect hippo habitat
