Ooh, this is sick! 10/10 new series concept! Tall order, but one of these for the Ultra Beast's homeworlds would be sick. As in, drawing the closest comparisons in our known universe and how they could form, or something. I've always loved those places, especially Ultra Deep Sea and Ultra Plant.
I had to check the comment history of those two to see if they weren't bots, but both are. I genuinenly thought one or the two of them were linking videos like the one OP asked for 😔
If I remember correctly, the Pokémon Ranger regions of Fiore and Almia are geographically based on that cut-off Southern tip of Hokkaido (which is why those games send Manaphy eggs to the Sinnoh games, the nearest main region).
Almia is indeed based on primarily on the area south of where Canalave is, with the desert area being on the main island of Japan. Fiore, however, is based on areas west of Kansai, which is the part of Japan Johto is based on. And though it wasn't mentioned, Oblivia is based on a very small group of islands north of Kansai.
I LOVE how incredibly accurate and inspired the Sinnoh map was with Hokkaido, like the few things that didn't perfectly align to one singular aspect were usually just a flawless combination of the possible differing options, and the layout of the map itself aligns SO well that it's just incredible how much effort they put into making sure the deliberate details came across!
A look at the inspiration a fictional region took from a real world area. What an interesting idea and great way to see the detail Pokemon put into emulating an area and learn more about said area.
I just realized something about Cranidos and Shieldon. Yubari was a mining town for coal and iron. Fossil mons are brought back...well, from Fossils, so of course they're Rock-type (especially since they were mined up!) Coal is a rock-like substance, meaning Cranidos is a pure Rock-type. Iron is a metallic substance, so Shieldon is part Steel-type! I could be overthinking this but idc lol
The sheer lower energy and simple deep diving of this channel calms my nerves every video. There isn’t big news and ideas like on the game theorists channel, but a source of explanation and reasoning for this world of pocket monsters im so in love with. Have a good day, everyone
This sounds like it would be a great series indeed! It was super interesting how you broke down every little bit of Sinnoh to show how it related to the real world counterparts in Hokkaido. As a culture nerd, I'm very interested.
I could easily be wrong, but I could see Sinnoh having such strong ties to real-world locations as being caused by GF knowing they were going to go more global after gen 4. Sort of a last hurrah / love letter to the regions based in Japan. Or maybe this level of detail is common before, after, or both before and after globalizing pokemon regions. Definitely an interest video/series idea! I'd love to see more
I’ve literally been wanting a series like this in a style as high in quality as yours! Love geography and Pokémon so this is perfect. Great as always Lockstin
Actually, I'm learning Horticulture, only Dicots have two leaves when sprouting, monocots have one. 😜 But also, I never twigged that twin leaf was called that because of sprouting, and have always wandered why it was twin leaf.
I've always loved how much the regions are based off of real locations. 11/10 series concept Lockstin, hope to see more of them! (with plenty of given time for the research that goes into it, no rush)
The video hasn't even started for me and I'd love this to be a series, I love finding parallels between games and reality, so this series is perfect for me!
Once Legends Arceus is out, you should revisit Sinnoh... I mean Hisui and see how it matches up then, although I suppose you'd have to go digging through a lot of documents from the Meiji era for a proper matchup.
Hisui is the Mystery Dungeon equivalent of Sinnoh from the mainline games since the game that features the region, Pokémon Legends Arceus, is a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game.
@@maganhassan2627 In Pokémon Legends Arceus, you play as a Pokémon, a human who got turned into a Pokémon to be exact, which is crucial since, as a former human, you can remember that you were a human, but more importantly, as a Pokémon, you can get attacked by other Pokémon. This description fits perfectly well with other Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, hence, Pokémon Legends Arceus is a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game.
@@aaaafireball9322 What do you mean ? You do really play as a human who got turned into a Pokémon in Pokémon Legends Arceus afterall, just like in any other Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game. Also, i don't smoke anything at all.
Woah. That's an amazing level of detail, I never knew or even expected this level of fidelity. And it's also very impressive that you found this just using google maps and what online resources were in English (I've been in my own hell of researching Japan and not being able to use a majority of sources because I can't read them). It would be amazing to see more videos like this, although I imagine doing one for Ahola, Galar, or Unova would be easier. Let's hope Legends Arceus keeps that up (I know people have been able to play an emulated version of the game for like a week, but no spoilers please) with a Pokemon-ified version of history where the Galaxy Expedition team turns out to be the bad guys (suprise suprise) who do some E-rated colonialism. Not like murder or anything horrific. Just an evil plan of disrupting the harmony between humans and Pokemon and forcing the Diamond and Pearl clans to give up their culture. Would be kind of a dark twist that even if they don't say it in game, the fact Sinnoh has a similar culture to the previous 3 regions means they do win in the end.
Now this is an amazing video. I can only imagine how many lore and history videos you'll be able to make once you have all the stuff in Legends Arceus to work with too.
Awesome! The region is very detailed, I wonder if other older regions had this much thought put into the maps. There's no way they were doing this much back in gen1.
Yes! Please make more! I'm currently living up in the Tohoku region -- I've had a craaazy ambitious idea of doing something similar to this and visiting these places. Like, why hasn't anyone done a Pokemon themed tour guide book yet??
It would actually be cool if one of the older regions was redone (say Johto for example) but made more in the style of Galar, where there would be more real life inspiration for new Pokemon and areas. If it were Johto, then maybe the mons could be more Japanese themed instead of being kind of random?
Please do more stuff like this, it's always been cool to see the inspiration that the pokemon company took from real life locations and it's incredible getting to see these parts of the world I would've never known about before
This was fantastic. I love these dives into the origins of things, it's so interesting, and really incorporates the main aspect of your channel "using fiction to educate about real things".
This might be one of my favorite videos on UA-cam. It was fascinating to see the real world equivalents to the regions. PLEASE make a video for the other regions too!
Fascinating! I always hated geography in school, but Pokémon-themed edutainment makes everything fun! I'd love to see similar analyses of the other regions, if you're ever up for it. Cheers, Lockstin! :D
More region breakdowns would be amazing! I would absolutely love to see them :D Though i understand they require a lot of research, so hopefully theyre not too difficult of videos to make! With that amazing map they released for Paldea, you could probably make a really cool vid 🤩
The detailed real world connections are one of my favorite things in the series and sadly often overlooked, so I would love to see this shared around so that more people can appreciate it!
Absolutely yes to the idea of more region breakdown videos! I absolutely enjoyed this as I had a general idea that everything was inspired by a real place, but that was quite a bit more inspiration than I expected
It's so cool that Gamefreak put so much attention to detail into things that the vast majority of people overlook. Reminds me a lot of Bethesda. Putting a ton of detail into some things, and then screwing others up. (Not hating on Gamefreak or Bethesda btw)
I love this type of video. Explaining how the Pokemon world can connect to the real world is something I've become more interested in since I'm now playing the games myself. (I grew up with certain people equating Pokemon with the devil). I would love to see more of these videos and maybe even one on how Hisui and Sinnoh connect.
I have an idea for a video that I think would be really fun to watch, I remember in a fan unboxing video you said that you played DnD a lot with some friends, and you never thought about doing a Pokemon themed adventure. I would love to watch a Pokemon DnD playthrough! That sounds awesome!
a couple years back i went to hokkaido on a tour trip and we kind of toured almost all part of hokkaido; it's amazing to recognise the places that i went in the video as well as the sinnoh counterpart! gen4 was my first pokemon game and it holds a special place in my heart. also i managed to snag a bunch of pokemon villain bos merch during their boss campaign in the sapporo pokemon centre, i got pikachu cyrus from a gacha and that was prolly one of the best bday gift i got for myself recognizing those places you mentioned makes sinnoh and hokkaido more meaningful to me, thank you for the wonderful video!!
It'd be kinda cool if you did a video comparing Hisui's old map to Sinnoh's map! Obviously some artistic licence was taken with Hisui's compared to Sinnoh's, but there are some places where it's like "oh crap, this is probably *exactly* where Snowpoint City is"

Agreed 💯
