- From the colossal St. Francis Dam, to the ominous Bahia Honda Rail Bride, these are 8 STRANGE Abandoned Places Across America !
HEY YOU ! There are more awesome videos being made every week, like and subscribe to World Unearthed so you don't miss a beat !
8.St. Francis Dam
LOCATION - Sierra Pelona Mountains, California
The St. Francis dam was constructed in only 2 years, between 1924 and 26. It was supposed to be an integral part of the Los Angeles Aqueduct water supply infrastructure. Its close proximity to Los Angeles did not trouble anyone at the time, by close, I mean 40 mi (64km) from downtown LA.
On March 12, 1928, 3 minutes from midnight, the St. Francis Dam experienced a catastrophic failure. In all, 12.4 BILLION Gallons (47 Billion Liters) of water rushed down the canyons, destroying everything in sight. The only piece that was not moved by the water became known as the “Tombstone”. The largest remaining piece of the dam, weighing in at 10,000 tons, was dragged ¾ of a mile (1200m) by the current.
Around 425 people lost their lives, and the height of the water initially reached 140 ft (43m). Bodies were found as far south as the USA - Mexico border, many more were washed out into the Pacific Ocean
The tragedy was massive, and people wanted answers, there were 4 separate commissions that came up with almost identical reasons behind the failure. “The dam failed as a result of defective foundations”. To this day, you can hike around the Sierra Pelona Mountains, and hunt for
The reason I went into this much detail about this abandoned place in the mountains is due to the Oroville Dam scare from a few days ago. The spillway suffered a failure, and fearing imminent collapse, the government issued evacuation orders for 188,000 people. Luckily, nothing failed due to erosion from the water… but there are more heavy rains expected in the area starting on Feb 15.
7.Holland Island
LOCATION - Chesapeake Bay, Maryland
6.Cahaba
LOCATION - Cahaba, Alabama
5.Fontainebleau Resort Las Vegas , Echelon
LOCATION - Las Vegas, Nevada
4.Centralia
LOCATION - Centralia, Pennsylvania
Alrightttt I get it, everyone and their cat knows about Centralia. But it had to be included at least once in these videos.
Centralia was a somewhat decent town in the 80’s, with about 1000 residents, to the sad sad state of affairs in recent years, with an estimated population of around 7 people.
The downfall of the town began when a coal seam fire was started sometime in the 1960’s. Many people claim that the whole fire was started because of deliberate illegal burning of trash in a former strip mine. No the town is not haunted, but yes, the town is believed to be the inspiration for the horror film, Silent Hill.
3.Glenwood Power Plant
LOCATION - Yonkers, New York
This dirty old power plant has been the location for many rumors and stories, including its importance as a satanic ritual places, and gang initiations.
The plant was built in 1907, and served an important role in the powering up the New York Central Railroad…. The building has been abandoned since 1970, and for a long time, it was an eyesore, an urban exploration spot, and let's face it, somewhere to go when you ditched school.
2.Bahia Honda Rail Bridge
LOCATION - Florida Keys, Florida
Check this out, its a railroad bridge over the ocean ! But seriously, it is. It was originally part of the “overseas railway” that connected many parts of the Florida Keys. Specifically connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key.
From 1912 to 1938 it was strictly used as a rail bridge, but it was later converted to highway use until 1972. What happened in 1972 ? A catastrophic failure? Godzilla ? actually something very mundane, a new, stronger, better, prettier bridge was built. Nowadays, the Bahia Honda Rail bridge still stands proud over the shallow waters of the Florida Keys. There are no immediate plans to dismantle or destroy what remains of the structure !
Honorable Mentions
Bulow plantation,Grossinger's Catskill Resort, City Methodist Church
1.Bannerman Castle
LOCATION - Fishkill, NY
Finally, at #1, located on the Hudson river, and built simply by chance, the Bannerman Castle was the home of the ammunitions dealer Frank Bannerman. Who claimed that he was all about peace, even when the bannerman summer home was also used for a stockpile of goods he hadn’t sold yet !
This also lead to the accidental explosion of 200 tons of shells and powder in 1920. It destroyed a bit of the castle, coupled with declining sales, and the loss of the ferryboat that served the island, the place was completely abandoned by 1968.
Nowadays, the island is owned by the New York State Office of Parks and Rec. and starting in May 2017, you can visit the island again ! - Розваги
Which of these Strange Abandoned Places have you visited?
World Unearthed I live in fishkill NY Holy Shit
World Unearthed
I live up the canyon from St Francis... Drive by it almost everyday....Another story is that an old man lived in an Adobe at the mouth of San Francisquito ,was swept away .his kids claimed he stuffed gold coins in the mortar gaps ,,,They found gold coins for years after down the Santa Clara river....
I live in Centralia....IL
World Unearthed I basically travel around I find abounded places
I feel for you.
Great video! One note: Centralia's coal fire started by a sanctioned trash burn at the city's dump as the trash was building up too much.
And had pollitions or something like that coming to town and they wanted to get rid of the smell from the dump.
Better than all of the "Top5" channels... Good research...
good video dude, keep it up...
good n
Cant get enough of your videos I'm waiting for the notification!
Love this guys videos! can't wait for the next one :)
I live in San Diego and have family up up in northern cal 30 miles from that dam just hope it stays strong and holds up 😱
The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is not abandoned. You can walk up it and look down. Its paved up there and only open to walkers on both sides because it doesn't connect on both sides. It's really cool. There's a campground right there.
Loved the video! New subscriber ❤️
So glad I discovered this channel. Just moved to NJ on the Hudson and have always wanted to go to Bannerman's Castle. Thanks to your video now I know it's possible later this year. Thanks!!
Cheers !
I love abandoned places good video man keep it up
#1 is actually in Beacon, not Fishkill. I grew up there. As well...it's now a Hot Spot to go to on a tour. Many structural renovations have been made to accommodate safety on the tours. I love that this made #1!!!!
My favorite is the old church in Gary, IN...and it's just an honorable mention! It's too bad it's all falling apart now, it would have made a cool library. I looked it up, the roof is caved in now.
This was pretty cool. Learned new things. Thanks!
you always come up with these unique videos and the quality is amazing keep up the good work man ! :D
Glad you like the content :D
It was just places present on a History Channel show.
Love your stuff. This gives me some ideas to travel to as I head south this winter...
The resort in Liberty NY is just up the road from me, loved exploring it when I was a kid. Found some interesting stuff too.
As for your number one, there have been some awesome parties there, actually quite creepy at night too.
I would list the number 1 abandoned places in America is the space between the ears of politicians.
David Dixon Add to that list the foul-mouthed nasty commenters here. smh.
Oooohhhh BARS!!
David your posting made me smile. It was very apt and a clever retort. Thank you.
Ooooh apply cold water to burned area
😂😂😂😂😂😂
This channel is very informative and actually well narrated!
excellent video, great dialogue and content, thanks!!!
Nice one. Well done. Thank you.
OHHHH IVE SEEN #5 EVERY TIME WE GO THERE!! I *always* thought it was like, under construction or something. Cool to know it's abandoned! While we were there, we also saw a hotel getting demolished. I think it was the Riviera? Anyways, that's really cool to know.
Good video I enjoyed ;')
Bulow plantation ( from the honorable mention ) is a state park, very isolated and not very well-known, except to locals.
great place to visit.
I really enjoy your presentations. I lived in Key West most of my childhood.
Great videos! You have an awesome voice for narration
great video:)
Live in Tuscaloosa, have visited Los Angeles & Vegas. Awesome video!
I always wanted to know about that little island on the Hudson. That's my apocalypse spot.
awesome. i recently watched a doc on the building of the railway to the fla. keys. And the doc on Bannerman castle awesome as well
Thanks for this. How absolutely interesting. Keep on with this stuff. I only heard about one of these things. But so many ... ... WOW. 20feb17.
Good videos ! Keep up the research.
Was a fun show thank you!
I was falling asleep. Holding up my cell phone watching. And when that Zombie rushed to the screen, I shit my pajamas!
Loving this Chanel watched 2 videos so far seen locations I've already been to and I live 10 min from the church in gary
Good quality content on your channel and likeable, listenable voice.
Very entertaining and informative.. Love urban and abandoned places. Glad someone else goes there or tells the stories while I sit safely far away.. LOL
Very good video. Thanks
lol i cant help but picture the narrator with a teardrop tattoom, vans, and a button up with only the top button buttoned, reading a script in a studio
Fantastic video.Thank You.
Rebecca Dunkley ur a sweetheart
#2 - extra facts on the abandoned Bahia Honda bridge --
* it is next to one of the few sandy beaches in all of the Florida Keys.
* also, you can walk out on the section of the bridge closest to Bahia Honda.
Definitely worth a stop if you're driving the whole length of the Keys from the mainland.
great video
Neat series!
...Dude!! :D...that Ferry ye used at 8:45 is th' Isle of Seil to th' Isle Of Luing ferry, MV Belnahua, on th' West coast of Scotland ;)
I believe the rail bridge in the florida keys was the one they used in True Lies when the limo crashes. I could be wrong though.
Right road, wrong part. The Bahia Honda Bridge is around mile post 36, the bridge in True Lies is the Seven Mile bridge, around mile posts 40 to 47.
The bridge isn't abandoned either. It is only used with walkers. you can go there and look down at all the sea life. The campgrounds right there.
Just found this video and it's funny because I used to live near two of the places.
Grossingers Golf Course in Liberty, NY. It's still there and still a complete eye soar that no-one wants to deal with. The property is huge and there's a lot of potential. But between the outrageous taxes and lack of interest in Sullivan County, this place will most likely remain abandoned for a long time to come.
And Bannerman Castle, it's a beautiful place to visit. They now have walking guided tours as well as lunch and dinner groups on the island during during the summer. Obviously only accessible by boat, but still a cool place to see.
Thanks guys.
Bannerman Island is the deal!!
that's cool man thanks for representing the bulow sugar Mill is located on what's known as Riverside drive in the tomoka State Park with a beautiful scenic roadway through old piney wood Cypress swamp Florida that people seem to forget. That sugar Mill is actually located on the route of one of my bicycle rides that I go on it's about eight miles from my house.
I've been by number 5 a lot when I went from the strip to fremont. Last I was there was in 2016...and it still was abandoned as of that moment. Not sure if it's still up or anything.
There's a ghost town by the name of Pitcher, Oklahoma that used to be a huge zinc mine in the early 1900s to mid part of the century. Also the birthplace of baseball player Mickey Mantle. I really enjoy your videos, would be cool if It makes the cut for a future video.
I really shouldn't but the story of Bannerman Castle just made me laugh XD
As a Maryland native who grew up by the Chesapeake Bay, I was surprised to see Holland Island on here. It's nothing terribly special, but to think people used to live on Holland Island (which is now basically underwater) is shocking.
I've actually explored the Glenwood Power Plant when i used live in Yonkers, New York. Very creepy place, especially at night.
An informative, and entertaining video.
Lake Oroville California is doing GREAT now!
Debbie Chamberlin your not
Yeah, I live in Oroville; so when you were talking about the dam that failed near LA which held 12.4 billion gallons of water, I had to compare it to Oroville. Right now Oroville lake has 904.2 billion gallons of water, but can hold up to 1.16 trillion gallons.
Need to look into the superconducting Super Collider in Waxahachie Texas
The Bahai Honda Bridge is practically in my backyard. How about an honorable mention to Dungeness on Cumberland Island?
On a much larger scale, there is the Indiana Army Ammunition plant between Charlestown and Jeffersonville Indiana. another fine example of your tax dollars at work.
I've been on boats and we would drive around the Bannerman Castle. There were posted signs about staying off the island but it never stopped people. You can now sign up to tour the place but its still pretty unstable and everything is overgrown and steep. I'll wait a few years until it is better cleared off and more friendly. Much like they did with Boldt Castle in the early '80s.
Why not include the former Packard auto plant in Detroit.......or ALL of Detroit? :)
Bannermans is the absolute most beautiful thing on our Hudson ❤️ must visit if you’re local!
good research, good editing, great videos keep them coming!!!
This has been in my watch later for 5 years...
Actually, this is the first time Ive heard of Centralia, Pennsylvania and the underground fire in that area. I had no idea.
Right?
GOOD JOB !!! Very informative and enjoyable, Not like some of these types of videos where the narrator sounds like he/she is reading a script!
LOVED IT............
I am a resident of Rockland Co. N.Y. and have canoed out to Bannerman's Island Arsenal known in the last segment of this video as Bannermans Castle. I was allover that wonderful abandoned island from 1992 -2000 even though it was forbidden to be on it by the Coast Guard. Except for it having been gutted by a fire in 1969 after it had long since been abandoned, all the stone work, mortar, moat, sallyport etc, were in great condition until Hurricane Floyd caused some minor damage to it.
Myself and a few friends would row out to it from Cold Spring on the Hudson with a boom box, coolers of beer and whiskey, a little gunge and have a great time in the Summer --- all to ourselves. It is now part of the Bannerman Island Trust and has tours on it with a ferry service. The tour is guided so I haven't bothered to return there since after Floyd to see the damage to it and enjoy it one last time unrestricted.
check out the michigan central station in detroit. most epic abandoned building.
mikey caputo and the Packard plant
Well if I ever have the time and money, I now have places to visit on a vacation that is probably cheaper than Disney land and without lines ,depressing but sometimes the journey is better
Centralia, Pa. The city council was having a founders day parade and wanted the parade route cleaned up. It happened to go by the town dump at the edge of town, so they started cleaning but gave up and set fire to it. It was there because a coal mine shaft came up there and was handy to throw crap into. The HUGE coal mine caught fire and burned the foundations from under the town. It will burn for at least 10,000 years. One by one the residents moved out, with NO compensation even though the city caused it.
I remember my exes best friend was from Oroville and she was freaking out when the dam scare happened because she has a lot of family still there
Should look at Preston Castle in Ione, CA
VERY FUN VIDEO
Horror FILM? You mean horror game. Please don't let those shitty movies be the reference point for Silent Hill.
Number 3 looks like the place where in transformers 1 or 2 when Megatron is interrogating sam
"I mean look at it" (centrailia) 😂😂😂
I'm
My hometown
Hey, when you say " I know everybody knows about Centralia".. did you ever thought that anyone From Québec,Canada would ever look at this and learn about centralia and a lot of other cool places ? Keep it up man !
Damaster chef if you burn your self, purchase a tube of 100% aloe Vera, must be 100 or 99-%. If you burn yourself wash under cold water, dry and rub gently on effected area. Wait 5 minutes and reapply. For a 1stdegree you need to do this once or twice or three times. For a really bad burn do this every 5 minutes until the burning sensation is gone. I split boiling water on my hand and within 30 minutes the sting was gone. Aloe is a incredible at soothing burns, and helps in the healing process. and should be available at a drug store.
I live practically next to the bahia bridge. Its not strange, its just falling apart due to age. We just abandoned it lol
went by raft to bannnermans is. in 1968. got some helmets and uniforms. Not in Fishkill. located between beacon and cold spring
Bannerman sold Mosin Nagants converted to 30-06 however these are dangerous to shoot due to the unsafe chamber pressures generated by the round.
Banner man castle is not in fish kill it's near Cornwall and beacon u can take a tour from Newburgh ny
Daaaamn....Dam!
I worked in a Fabrication shop in pine Island NY it was called the black dirt region, our shop was surrounded by onion fields thousands of acres of soil black as coal the soil is so rich with with minerals way back from when the Dinosaurs roamed the earth , It was actually ILLEGAL smoke or light fires near the fields .A man dropped a cigarette on the edge of the field and it burned underground for two miles and cam out under someone's house. incidents like this happened more than a hundred times ! .
Wow. A few near me. Fishkill,Catskill and Yonkers.
A lot of killing over there. What's up with that?
Maybe you guy's could investigate a place called Carroll Island in Baltimore,MD harbor at the Francis Scott key bridge???
There's an abandoned amusement park in West Virginia, and it's pretty creepy
I worked in a Fabrication shop in pine Island NY it was called the black dirt region, our shop was surrounded by onion fields thousands of acres of soil black as coal the soil is so rich with with minerals way back from when the Dinosaurs roamed the earth , It was actually ILLEGAL smoke or light fires near the fields . we were not aloud to weld or cut near the fields our shops property is built on trucked in soil . man dropped a cigarette on the edge of the field and it burned underground for two miles and came out under someone's house. Lol that ‘zombie’ scared me 😂😂
Do you really need to write "lol"???
That castle is to awesome to just be left there to crumble. Sad
Neither myself or mittens my cat, knew anything about it
correct me if im wrong but wasn't the railway bridge in the Florida keys destroyed by a hurricane? I only got that from a different video so im not sure.
I used to live right by the st francis dam remains. not much left back then though
You should check out mineral Springs texas
I live near the flood plane of #8....
it winds up that it was not a Design Flaw it was an impossible to know the geological flaw in the mountain... they needed Ground penetrating radar that they just did not have.
The narrative is quite amusing. It was very reminiscent of the patter in Grease, very New Yorkish.
Thanks Bahi Honda bridge is a starter park
So many abandoned places!
Anybody else doubt the explosion was "accidental"?
I remember going to Grossinger's and the Concord as a kid. Too bad they went under, they were fun, even for a kid. But even then I liked exploring and exploring the huge hotels in the Catskills was exciting cause even though you knew you were perfectly safe it was like well as I imagine exploring Hogwarts would be for anyone not named or Friends with Harry Potter.
