  • From the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, to the unreal communist monument in Bulgaria, these are 10 RESTRICTED Abandoned Places !
    6. North Brother Island
If you live in New York City you might have seen this island before. It is located between the Bronx and Rikers Island, and it is definitely off limits.
The island has a long and sad history as a quarantine zone dating back to the 1880’s when a hospital dedicated to smallpox was built. The most famous patient on the island is without a doubt Typhoid Mary, the first human in the US to be identified as an asymptomatic carrier of typhoid fever.
The remains of the quarantine hospital still stand strong, but the island has been taken over by dense brush and wildlife
    5.The 1936 Olympic Village
Regarded as the most infamous Olympic games in history, the site of the 1936 “Nazi Games” in Berlin has been left to the elements.
The people of Berlin want nothing to do with it, maybe because it is connected to WW2 or maybe because it was under soviet control for decades, there are certainly many factors at play here.
This is the oldest olympic village that has any hope of being restored to its former glory, but it will be an almost impossible feat since no one wants to donate money towards the cause.
    4.Maunsell Sea Forts
These haunting sea forts are located in the Thames Estuary (where the river meets the sea) and were built during WW2. They were part of England’s defense system and served their purpose until the late 50’s.
After that, some of the forts were the location of a few pirate radio stations, and after it was all said and done, the buildings were deemed unsafe and the general public has been severely restricted in visiting them.
Perhaps you have heard of the Principality of Sealand ? It is an unrecognized micronation that has claimed the Rough Tower Fort, and has been falsely labeled as the “smallest country in the world”.
It is not recognized by any other nation or government, and considering it has a constant population of 0, you can see why.
    3. Holy Land USA
With a name like Holy Land USA, you would expect something a bit more…. holy.
This place falls into the “other” holy section… yes that one.
56 years ago, the Biblical theme park was built in Waterbury Connecticut, it was a place for anyone to experience the sights of Jerusalem, the Garden of Eden, and Bethleem. Alas, the park was closed down for renovations during the 80’s, and it never opened again.
A group of nuns was put in charge of the place but they could not keep up with the upkeep.
The place is restricted in a way, since it is still private property, but inviting front gates offer entry to anyone who dares to go in.
The park has turned into a very creepy place, especially at night…
    2. Six Flags Jazzland
Jazzland was a fully operational amusement park that was permanently shut down after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.
It is now considered as “Standing but Not Operational” and with absolutely every plan of reopening failing, this six flags location is a prime urban exploration spot, the worst you will have to deal with is lazy security guards… and the fact that the whole place can be considered a giant death trap.
In 2013, the movie Percy Jackson: Sea Monsters filmed on location at the park, and many other studios followed their lead. The most famous of them being Jurassic World.
And now for NUMBER 1, but first, the answer to our question.
On June 15, 1904, PS General Slocum, a passenger steam boat caught on fire near the the North Brother Island, and bodies from the ship littered the coast.
In total, 1,021 people died, and 321 survived to tell the tale.
    1. The Buzludzha Monument
When looking at this massive saucer shaped building it isn’t hard to believe that it was built during the height of Brutalism Architecture in the 70’s.
The monument was commissioned by the Bulgarian Communist Party and it officially opened in 1981 and it closed down not even 10 years later with the fall of communism in the country. After it was abandoned, no one really cared for it, at all. The building fell into complete disarray and is littered with graffiti and broken glass.
And yet, there is something that attracts many urban explorers to this place, the front doors have been chained up for a long time, but that really hasn’t stopped anyone that wants to see the inside of the building.
Roman Robroek, an urban photographer from the Netherlands, captured the spirit of the building perfectly during his trip. The larger than life monument towers over the silhouette of a man who is trying to make out what the ominous red letters above the front doors say...

Baikonur Kosmodrome is still used by Russia to launch space craft. It might still be their only spaceport. The Buran shuttle and its hangars were abandoned, but the rest of the space port is still very active. In fact, American astronaughts, whose own country can't launch them into spoace anymore, go to Baikonur to ride on Russian Soyuz rockets.
The Buran shuttle was not a failure, and it was not a mere copy of the american shuttle. The Buran shuttle was much more advanced and even capable of fully-autonomous flight. This is a feat Boeing just managed to replicate a few years ago. The Buran shuttle made one successful flight. More flights were scheduled, but you have to remember that the Soviet economy was in shambles by the late 1980's, and the Russian Federation struggled throughout the 1990's due to economic hardship. Because of this, the buran shuttle programme was cancelled. I think that's very unfortunate. These things would probably still be in-service if is wasn't for the economic collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent years of economic hardship experienced by Russia. The programme was not a failure.
It was cancelled due to a lack of available funds.

" In fact, American astronaughts, whose own country can't launch them into spoace anymore"
What? You know the US has two private companies, Spacex and Boeing, with active launch contracts right? Spacex is decades ahead of Russian rocket technology.

Well with Baikonur you certainly got a few things wrong, the Site itself is still in use, most Russian Spacecraft launch from there. However parts of the enormous area are disused, a few years ago the hall with the shuttle that was in space collapsed destroying it, but 2 unfinished shuttles are still in another hall on the property.

Baikonur? No, the whole place is "rented" and protected by the russian military, and there are no tours or anything like that. But it's an enormous area and not entirely fenced off, so you could just wander into it, but risk spending your time in a russian prison.

Rough's Tower, AKA 'Sealand' is not part of the Maunsell Forts complex. Rough's Tower sits in the open sea off the coasts of Suffolk and Essex, whereas the Maunsell Forts are well within the Thames Estuary, about 3km off the Kent coast. Furthermore, there is always at least one person inhabiting 'Sealand' at all times, just in case somebody tries to invade - don't laugh, it has happened in the past. Oh, and the guns mounted on the deck? They're not just for show. They have, in the past, been used to put warning shots across the bows of vessels that, despite radio warnings, have come a bit too close. My late father knew the owner, the late Roy Bates, or 'Prince Roy' as he was known.

The no.1 monument is called the Buzludja UFO and is located in Bulgary. I went there specially to see it. It is amazing! Built on a mountain, the size and the architecture of that thing are extraordinary. I went inside, took as many pictures as I could, the view from inside is awsome. If only the bulgarians cared for it and was transformed in a museum.....

Sami Dobrin I am a bulgarian and this thing really is amazing. Sadly, our politicians care only about money and most bulgarians arent interested in the history of our country what leaves for an "old circular concrete thing on the top of a mountain" By the way there is another interesting concrete stucture in Bulgaria. Its called "monument of the soviet army and is located in Varna. There are many secret rooms in it, a good place to observe the city and a giant bunker with a lenght of more than a kilometer.

World Unearthed The word "NEVER" is not really added. I have been serveral times to Buzludja in the years from 2003 untIl today. Here is the story. Some people wrote with red paint "FORGET YOUR PAST" on some night in 2008. Later in 2011 the bulgarian government decited to close buzludja to stop the vandalism they closed the site entrance (that was made to go inside years before) and painted the front wall with grey paint (as you can see behind the red paint) to remove al the grafiti in the front. In 2014 somebody else painted again the same text but made it "NEVER FORGET YOUR PAST"

Michigan's Grand Central Station - Detroit. It won't come back, because they want to turn the place into an artists venue; and have turned down offers to return train service, with a transportation museum, historic streetcars and returning Amtrak to it. They think that because they tore down the bridge to the loading ramps, there is no way that train service can be returned. It would not be hard to more the mainline to the outer edges of the station; and reinstall the bridge. 3 years ago I offered to do some of those things and they said no. Arts center only.

Brother Island is a mass burial place for indigent adults and infants that died in the hospital and they city offered to take care of. Unclaimed bodies are also buried there. When I say mass burial, I mean they put 1000 babies in the same hole in tiny little boxes not much bigger than a shoe box. A lady whose stillborn infant was buried there had to jump through a lot of hoops, but was finally granted permission by the city to visit her child's grave. There are no markers, no names, nothing. It looks more like a natural park with trees and greenery.

Its easy to say Merica! As an American, but for thousands of years as the borders have changed, Germanic tribes to nations have always just been mind-mindbogglingly successful and badass. After getting the "wow that's messed up" end of the Treaty of Versailles stick.... coming back in a couple decades to be even a remotely relevant country would have been astounding... Then they took over Europe... And because Merica and a certain dude not learning from prior Germans that got they ass kicked from a 2 front war, lost again. Few more decades, most powerful European country again. Gotta be magic dust in that soil.

I was born and raised in Connecticut and have never been to holy land in Waterbury. there's also an abandoned children's hospital in Middletown I think and the green lady cemetery. also there's Dudley Town I believe in northwestern CT in or near a town called Cornwall that is supposedly very haunted. CT. is old with a lot of history and old places to see and scare the shit out of yourself.

I'm in Waterbury a few times a week (unfortunately)... For those thinking about checking it out... Holy Land isn't just an enter at your own risk of arrest place. Its riddled with junkies, drunkies, and worse. One of a number of rapes and murders that have occurred there over the years, most famously as it actually made the news a 16 year old was abducted, brought to Holy Land, drug into the overgrown park then raped and strangled to death.
A really cool place to explore in CT that's illegal, creepy as heck, and supposedly haunted, is the Fairfield Hills Asylum in Newtown. In high school my friends and I frequently went there (under the cover of darkness of course) to explore and we were taking black and white photography as an elective. This place doesn't disappoint for either, or even just chill seeking. Especially if you can explore the underground tunnels that connect the campus buildings with an underground morgue at the epicenter. Security really ramped up there after MTV did an episode of Fear there. If anyone decides to check it out and does get caught, don't be or be with a vandalistic and/or mouthy A-hole. If you're not breaking stuff or being a jerk when confronted they just tell you to leave and escort you out. I do know of some that have just been jerks and they won't hesitate to call the PD and have your ass thrown in a cruiser.

I'm from Waterbury,Ct. As kids we used to go up to holyland at night and play hide and seek. Scariest fucking game ever, but so much fun!!! The cross was finally lit up a few years ago and from what I've heard is that they're slowly working on the renovations.

I visited the Buzludzha monument 3 months ago, bot busted by Security police while doing a graffiti, didn't finish and got no photos of the graffiti, the police let me go with a warning. Surprised they care as the place is clearly falling apart adn was covered in graffiti already. The monument is the most impressive building I ever visited, doors were welded shut so couldn't get in, I heard a noise from the inside that made me feel quite ok with not being able to enter, very spooky place indeed, with the wind and cold on the mountain one could only think about the workers that built it. A very ghostly place, I recommend a visit before the whole thing collapses.

Correction about Famagusta. It is in turkish part of Cyprus, few miles away from Greek part so there are excursions to the city and the abandoned part. Bus doesnt stop in abandoned part, it stops at the beach. And there are guards there so you wouldnt take a pictures of the abandoned buildings. I heard opinions that this part is abandoned, nothing is built there because Turkey wants it that way. For many years goverments are negotiating and Turkey knows Cyprus wants this area so they keep it as negotiation chip and build nothing because eventualy they will leave the area.

I think you may be wrong about Sealand not being a principality it was recognized and acknowledged by the German government when 5 or so of their citizens tried to capture it Roy bates held them in its jail on the fort till his government and principality was recognized by Germany which meant his claim was legal. The principality has its own currency, postage stamps and passports. This information is available in book written by Roy bates son, Michael. Holding the fort is the book.
