Coaster Siemens Charger (SC-44) Test Trains in San Diego

- In late 2020, Coaster commenced testing of their brand new SC-44 Siemens Charger locomotives. Delivered over the Summer of 2020, these locomotives sport Coaster's brand new paint scheme; needless to say, quite the difference between the old! Before embarking on revenue testing and service, these test trains offer an opportunity for train crews to qualify and operate on the new locomotive model, as well checking for any possible defects. From the few times I saw the trains, two round trips are operated with two different sets, which provides ample opportunities to chase and see it along the line throughout the day. Newly repainted coach cars are also in the consists, providing a glimpse of the future look of Coaster.
Shot various dates and occasions in December 2020 around San Diego County.

Awesome catches Michael! Only three F40s and one F59 remain in service! They should be heading out on February 6-7 of next month.
Thanks for putting out another awesome video.
Thought the paint scheme was boring when the charger 1st came out with it, but with the whole consist it looks really slick
I just wish the loco had more to it. Even if there was a simple turquoise wave along the bottom it would look much better
great catches and video of these coaster test runs with these new engines
nice catch too with a coaster meeting a picnic surfliner
and a other coaster too at a station as well
Like 15 beautiful video,, greetings 🚂👍👋
Creo que la nueva dirección es perfecta, sabes, Conce, lo importante es estar a la moda de los trenes😌!
4:59 there is a little hummingbird!
Luv the new paint-scheme, the video was great too!
great catch! never expected coaster to get the chargers
Very, very nice!!! Great job!!!
Ken.
Does anyone know what the two rods are that stick up from the rear of the locomotives? They’re the only SC 44 Charger variant with them so far.
they could be clearance probes but I doubt it
probably used for testing something in the air above the loco, i dont think those'll be on during revenue runs
Coaster standard radio antennae.
@@hulloits4421 They will be. They're Coaster standard Radio Anttenae
@@LALtd001 exactly that’s what I was thinking like why do they need it
Really nice
Don’t you think the paint for both the new cars and engine don’t look to good? I think if all were just repainted the same then it would look good. Maybe even just a fresh paint.
I think they look great! It's giving them a fresh new and modern look for the future.
They had better paint scheme ideas but Siemens gave a BS reason why they chose this scheme instead
@@Railviation I know.
Great little video Michael. That looks like a lot of power for 4or 5 cars. I guess the grades are a lo little "acute". Well done 🤓 stay safe 💙
It's so they can test 2 at the same time, when they enter service, they'll only have one per set.
The new paint scheme looks awkward on the coaches, cutting through the windows. If they lowered the blue stripe it would look much neater
Very, nice video.
Good video!!!!!!!
Bachmann recently released their HO-scale Siemens SC-44 Charger in 3 Amtrak paint schemes.
Hopefully they get the rights to do these Coaster trains too. Very sharp looking!
Happy new year!
How many new SC-44 are Coaster having? With what number series?
Thanks for the video ! Do you know with they need 2 engines for such a short train ? Looks like it's most of the train.
It's so they can test 2 at the same time, when they enter service, they'll only have one per set.
2022:
E-bell
Charger Horn
LED Lights
There Goes Our Nostalgia
Hopefully the new Cab Cars come in soon
I love the new livery but doesn’t it seem like a strange time when you would think they were trying to save money?
So spending like this is usually done the year prior to things actually being done and contracts were most likely singed before the pandemic began.
Coaches need to be repainted periodically anyway.
These trains got ordered years ago
Why they use 2 engines with only 4 cars.
It's so they can test 2 at the same time, when they enter service, they'll only have one per set.
can't wait until they paint the cabcars
That’s unfortunately not happening. They are replacing the cab cars with the CEM’s
2309 & 2310 are repainted & refurbed (2301 is WRAPPED)
Coaster Trains looks nice and consistent color schemes. Not like Amtrak whose trains has different colors than the other one.
Any way to know when these test trains are operating? I've caught one by chance but I would like to see more.
9-Noon for sure, somedays 9-5. Always on weekdays.
@@AVeryRandomPerson Thanks, do they just run nonstop from Stuart Mesa Yard to San Diego from 9 to 12?
@@f59phrailfan82 They stop at every station to test the braking, and only go from Oceanside-San Diego
@@AVeryRandomPerson Ok, thanks.
Aw man. Really don't like the design on those Chargers. Not crazy about the new color scheme on the coaches either. Looks really similar to ACE's old coach design, and also similar to GO Transit's new paint too. I just think the gray and blue clash a little too much. Suppose that's just a me problem though, I'm glad to see changes nonetheless
The gray is basically part of every chargers but it doesn't really fit the cabs but in person it looks great
they aren’t really similar to go transit metrolinx paint the old design is closer
@@devvydoesstuff Personally I think it's more similar to GO's new paint scheme than the old one- the old GO paint has just two colors, with the white bordering the green on every side, while the new paint scheme doesn't have a border. Plus it has 4 colors: white, dark gray, and 2 shades of green. The new Coaster coaches likewise have white, dark gray, and two shades of blue, with no border either
@@loki3523 i meant the old design of coaster was more similar because of the white stripe
I hate those Semen Charger things so much. I want every single one of them to be scrapped and replaced with F40PH's.
