Oh yeah, that was a a really classy touch! I think Sakurai wisely decided having dialogue with so many of these characters, especially the cute ones, would be way too cheesy. Having a predominantly serious atmosphere made those epic feels possible and was a tremendous achievement. Then, when it went for comic relief, it was funny as all heck anyway. How did they pull this off?
My favorite example is the difference between Fox and Falco’s reactions to getting dragged off by Diddy Kong. Fox simply hangs his head as if to say, “Fine, I guess I’ll help you.” Meanwhile Falco angrily crosses his arms basically saying “Fox, why is this monkey dragging me off?!” 🤣🤣
@@GatorOne-in7hk That’s one of my favorite scenes too. Diddy just screaming for more help while Fox looks on with a knowing look on his face as Falco tries to leave twice, only to get roped in to help anyway. Lmao
One of the scenes that I think best encapsulates this is when we cut back to the ROB Units still on the floating island, and they slowly close their eyes right before the Subspace Bombs activate.
If you look into the lore of Kirby, you find out Kirby has levels of power that are almost unbelievable. Heck his stomach is essentially a different dimension that HE CAN ENTER.
I genuinely didn’t know people disliked this mode. I only have fond memories of it and was super upset when a story mode wasn’t included in smash on the switch
@@syweb2 I'm not really Into smash for a "story". Melee adventure mode was fun, quick and to the point, and it's interesting to see how playing through it changes from character to character. Brawls story just felt like a chore for a half baked kingdom-hearts-esq story. The only cool addition is the boss fights, but that could just be its own arcade mode and I'd enjoy it much more.
Subspace Emissary has so much personality, it's the only thing I think Brawl gets better than every other Smash game. If only Ultimate had a legit story mode :(
Yeah it's really sad they never really tried something like this again. I have a couple issues with Brawl, but I gotta admit, I return to it for Subspace every once in a while, which is better than say, Smash 4 for example. I have virtually no reason to return to it at this point.
I wouldn’t say this is the only thing Brawl does better, it just has better single player content in general even if you exclude Subspace Emissary. All Ultimate really has is Classic mode and WoL, and I don’t think anyone would want to replay through WoL a second time which makes Classic mode the only good single player mode after beating WoL. With Brawl, none of the single player modes ever felt boring to me and they had a lot of replayability.
If we never get the subspace emissary again, then we'll never get another fanfic based around it thats the longest peice of literature in the english language :(
My favorite story would have to be Rob's, the dude felt bad for his robo-homies dying, and decided to not work for the subspace army anymore. Then, all the robs betray him and try to shoot him with lasers and kill him, but he survives and beats all of them. Never expected such a good character arc from a robot that doesn't talk.
@@ctrlaltshift people liked SSE for the cutscenes and bosses. the gameplay however is a big slog, especially The Great Maze. Stickers barely helped btw.
@@TheRealZXXZ tbh depends on what kind of stickers. I boosted Yoshi's tail and head attacks and he's really powerfull. And let's not that start with Lucas or Meta Knight...
Since I don’t see anyone mentioning this... remember when Peach was walking on top of meta knight’s ship while it was EXPLODING like it was another day at the park???
Or that especific moment after Kirby and Zelda escape where you just have to like. Walk with them on top of the Halberd, without doing anything else, so they can get hit by Fox's ship? 🧍 It was funny tho lmao
Pokémon Trainer supporting Lucas and helping him be brave while he searched for his missing Pokémon was a great touch for some of the oddest characters picks in Brawl. Samus and Pikachu legit felt like they were on their own separate world, going on a spy mission. The levels were meh, but their dynamic was really well done.
I LOVED Sub-space. The cut scenes literally had me screaming when I was younger. When Ultimate came out I was really disappointed that it didn't come out with a new, more polished version of Sub-space and with new cut scenes. I refuse to ever let my Wii die out on me, I have to be able to replay Sub-Space whenever I want.
@@DamnZtar Sonic 06 isn’t even a bad game, it just has few technical issues in the gameplay, there’s P06 and it shows the full potential of how exellent the Sonic 06 gameplay could’ve been.
Remember when if you saved Peach instead of Zelda in the beginning, Link is the one who gets angry instead of Mario when you're fighting her dark clone
Saving Zelda - Mario and Pit fight against False Zelda - Link and Yoshi attack Mario and Pit in a fit of rage Saving Peach - Yoshi and Link fight against False Peach - Mario and Pit attack Link and Yoshi in a fit of rage
Like it is said in the video : it would be awesome but is just impossible. 85+ characters, a lot of which come from other publishers, an inhuman amount of work for cinematics that you would be able to access without paying via youtube... We must stop to dream about it :'(...
@@trebmal587 it's not really impossible. They just need to take the time to do it. It honestly wouldnt matter how long they took as long as they do it if it really is the last smash game. They can even release it as a port with a story mode on a future system and it would still sell.
honestly, every game has their cutscenes posted or leaked on UA-cam anyway, and smash ain't exclusive to it. I think that reason to not have cutscenes is bs, but I still respect that it would take a LOT of resources.
DuoStuff I respect what it tried to do. You could separate it from spirits but I view that all as one mode and spirits themselves are such a brilliant way to pay homage to the vast array of characters from all these series. That plus the few nice cutscenes with the characters we did get and the set pieces representing locations from the franchises makes it a worthy competitor to Subspace in my eyes, though it’s still an easy win for Subspace
It really does suck that we'll never get something like this again. Like you said at the end, with a bit more polish, this could have been built into something amazing in 4 or Ultimate. I remember enjoying playing through this with my friend years ago, and I still hold it and Brawl as a whole in high regard. Glad to see it get the recognition it deserves!
Yeah it's just so strange to me that Brawl pushed the bar so high and then the next games either didn't even attempt to hit it at all, or failed to do so with its effort. Glad you enjoyed the video. =D
I know I am late to the party, but it definitely was my favorite thing about Brawl- I was so happy to hear that Ultimate was getting a "Story Mode." but very disappointed with the end result. I remember playing the multiplayer story mode and arguing who had to be Olimar with my friends lol.
Ikr I don’t see what’s wrong with it and how some people dislike it, they even go as far as to hate the whole concept because of it. Some people really are insane.
@@PeruvianPotato let’s be real every day the amount of melee fanboys that haven’t played the game and are only going along with the crowd is growing every day
I love subspace emissary, back when the game released my family were moving into a new place and i fondly remember sitting on cardboard boxes with the wii and playing through this with my sister man. Good times.
This really cool detail in the Subspace Emissary: The Original 12 (minus Fox and Jigglypuff) team up with each other. Mario and Kirby Donkey Kong and Captain Falcon Link and Yoshi Samus and Pikachu Luigi and Ness.
It's cuz the puff was gonna be removed from Brawl, and was added due to extra time. Thta's also why it has a secret door in subspace like Wolf and ToonLink. I never noticed that tho, that's awesome!
Subspace was literally the best part of my childhood. I loved every single level, the story, and even the Great Maze. I can't comprehend how anyone could dislike this story mode
I played the whole campaign with sister, and we both looooooved it! The cutscenes were my favorite part, and we were both so bummed about the newer games not having any kind of story mode! I'm glad you liked it though, and even made a great video :)
I would always save Zelda at the beginning, and I recently went back and played, but saved Peach, and realized that that actually effects a few things. It was fun to play this game of my childhood, but with still a very minor unique story, but it was enough.
As someone who has played brawl since he was 2 years old, whenever you were talking about the terrible, horrible things about this mode, I was smiling from ear to ear each time. Remembering how fun this game is, especially when playing with my older brother. We were stuck on certain SE levels for months on end, and even restarted the whole game mode sometimes cause we forgot something about the story. Took us about 6-8 years to actually beat SE (we didnt even know Tabuu was a boss, I just was walking around and found it randomly) and it was one of the best times of my life. Edit: and me and my brother spent hours trying to find a way to not die from Tabuu’s 1 hit move before we found out we couldn’t lol.
I remember when I first played the game, the Maze straight up broke my progress, I couldn't figure it out and had to look up a guide. A couple of years ago I replayed Subspace and casually beat the maze in one sitting without thinking about it too much. Replaying old favorites always gives moments of wondering why you thought something was so hard, but this more than anything else I remember really gave me the sense of "wow was I really that stupid? what was I even doing? what about this was hard?". I love Subspace Emissary, I knew it got slept on but I didn't know many people outright disliked it, that's a shame.
@@snappy8666 Damn good on you. Now that I think about it actually I didn't look anything up though I guess I could have at the time, I bought the strategy guide which had a map of the Maze in it. Also how I learned about the 3 hidden characters.
Dude, this comment makes me feel so good about beating the maze without a guide when I was like 8. I hate not knowing where to go in games but back then I had all the time in the world.
I thought everybody loved subspace emissary?! I’ve heard nothing but good things and had amazing times with it. It was the full blown game version of childhood fantasies and times spent playing with toys that had us use our imagination to bring these characters and stories to life. It’s honestly my favorite experience in Smash simply because it has all of these characters interacting and going on a story driven adventure. It was nothing short of magical seeing all these characters meet and interact, even though I didn’t know a good chunk of them before playing. Subspace will always be childhood treasure to me and I’m so glad I got to experience it along with my childhood buddies.
Subspace Emissary was a masterpiece. The cut scenes ran smoothly(for it's time), some of the levels were cool, and overall, the story was so original (kind of) and much more fun than others in my opinion.
I never knew it was so underappreciated... this makes me kinda sad. I loved the story mode as a kid and also played it many times as an adult and still enjoyed it. There may be some stages that have flaws but it's very cool overall. And I actually liked the maze. The subspace stages (?) were so mysterious and dark and the soundtrack was so good and scary in a way that made it very exiting to me.
"Every character gets some screentime" Jigglypuff, Wolf, and Toon Link: . _. Jokes aside damn I loved some of the smaller interactions. Like Samus looking down at Pikachu after getting the Suit back was great, and showed Samus had built a respect for superior iconic mouse. Also the infamous Pikmin Masacure of 08'. Pure gold. Edit: Also I always thought Duon was inspired on Palkia and Dialga. Color scheme and the overall design just reminded me of it.
@@mario125ww They were left out due to time restraints. In fact, Jigglypuff was almost cut from the game. These were the last three characters put in the game.
*"You Ever Just Watch Samus Beat Up Pikachu, And Think To Yourself "Gee, This Is Great, But I'd Sure Like To See Them Work Together."* Actually... wait, didn't they do that in Brawl? I'm just curious! 🤔
Well first: it's hard to tell. I still hear mixed opinions to this day. It's why I said "I don't know if things have changed," and why I referred to the fact that people "hated it when it launched," since I was sure of that at least.
DuoStuff A lot of people didn't really like the game, but I honestly enjoyed it myself... I understand why people don't like it, and I won't judge someone who doesn't! 🤷♀️
There’s only one thing that I remember about this game. It was the scene of Lucas running up to Pokémon trainer in the rain? Night? Both? I was a kid sitting on the floor watching my little tv with my wii remote. But now I got rid of it and I now have a switch and 3DS. I wish I could go back to those sweet memories… 😌
We should at least have a remastered version of this adventure in Smash 6 (if they ever make one), even if you can only use the characters who were in Brawl.
15:23 okay, kind of my own theory, but when I looked at this scene, my mind just went to this. After they defeated Tabuu, they released all the worlds, all of them are back. And the Nintendo characters are happy, they’re celebrating, and then BAM! Freaking Google Chrome looking ass pops up out of nowhere and says, “Hey guys, thanks for getting rid of that dude, he was a pain in my ass,” and beams them. That’s how World of Light happened. Don’t know, this is just what I thought when I looked at this scene.
I love how you can kinda choose your own path like if you wanna save Zelda or Peach this turns into my second favourite custcenne from this mode where Mario and pit try to kill Link and yoshi cause they think that they killed peach and its the other way around if you saved zelda
The concept of the World of Trophies is such a cool and amazing and interesting concept to flesh out, expand and explain that the fact that Sakurai just said "WeLl PeOpLe ReUpLoAdEd ThE sCeNeS tO tHe InTeRnEt" as a poor excuse to not try to do something like this ever again will always make a hole in my heart until the day i die.
The funny thing is that I think he was lying there. Like that's such a lame excuse. My guess is he just didn't think that amount of effort should be put into a story mode like this, and just didn't want to admit that.
@@DuoStuff I don't know. I believe it. Not defending it as I think it's a dumb reason, but I believe that's at least a good portion of why he didn't do it again.
Nintendo can be very silly on that front like the reuploaded cutscenes allowed thousands of fans to enjoy it in a movie style once again its not like they lost sales because of it
Yeah for real. I appreciated that if I wanted to just watch a couple scenes after I beat it, I could just... Go do that on UA-cam. Like I still played the campaign so why did it matter? XD
Subspace was amazing, when I was younger, this was my favorite thing in existance. It is what brought me to Smash Bros, and pretty much gaming in general. Long live subspace and hope for there to be a sequel
2:03 Alternate punchline: I'm sure things will turn out fine, Kirby will save the- Wait is that a nuke? * subspace bomb explodes * Everyone dies games over 7/10 needed more jiggle physics.
Subspace Emmisary is great. As a Marth main, I enjoyed the 3 warrior's scene. It always reminded me of my second favorite Kirby game after Superstar, the amazing mirror.
Subspace was honestly my favorite thing about Brawl when I was a kid. It's probably due to nostalgia, but Brawl is my favorite smash game still. I was beyond disappointed when I found out Ultimate was cutting their story mode. I'm not big on fighting games, so if the story modes never return, I more than likely won't buy another smash game. It gets way to stale far too quickly for me.
As a little tike when I played Subspace Emissary, I waited and waited for Sonic's time to shine every cutscene. When I noticed that he wasn't in a single cutscene I realized that he was the last character announced for the game, so that might have meant that they didn't have the time to put him in, or they had already completed the mode with Sonic being an afterthought. I was pretty bummed out until I saw a certain blue streak smash into Tabuu. I remember that I yelled "Yes!" at the top of my lungs, and beat Tabuu with Sonic. One of my best memories.
I liked Subspace Emissary since it gives characters the chance to interact them instead of them fighting and I agree with the Lucas Arc since it gives Lucas grow as a character outside of Mother 3 and interacts with the previous Mother Protagonist Ness. Also Smash 4 was originally going to get a Story Mode like Subspace Emissary but I think the scenes got leaked or deleted.
Having the characters team up in unlikely groups is amazing, I wonder why they don't at least have characters interact with each other more than just being side characters to set the scene for the new character in smash trailers.
I still remember when I got Brawl as a kid. Having played and connected with some Nintendo characters back then and seeing them all in this story mode I legit thought "This is is, this is the final battle for all Nintendo characters, all their adventures and sacrifices have come down to this". Damn it was such an intense feeling this gamemode made me feel like the universe was legit coming to an end. Long live Subspace Emissary!
I used to play this mode with my brother in the past and we always really looked forward to The Great Maze. I only discovered how much people despised it years later, but after replaying my opinion on it hasn't changed!
Seeing your favorite game characters from other games team up and fight a bigger threat is awesome This is absolutely my favorite part of brawl. Marth vs meta knight but then ike comes was absolutely awesome too!
I'd really love for that to happen, but I highly doubt it. I just have this feeling that if we get another story mode, it'll be more on the World of Light end... XD
I also heard one of the reasons we wont get anything like this again is because someone leaked cutscenes of subspace and everyone knows sakurai hates leakers
I think an interesting thing this story gets right is now the villains of their respective stories are originally villains here, serving at the behest of some great power to gain more power. But they all ultimately realize the world is at stake and join with the others to stop taboo from ending it all
Whenever I hear the original track, I think of DKC2. Whenever I hear Brawl's rendition, I think of the Subspace Emissary. What other way is there to think of it? Simples!
Personally, I loved the platforming. This isn't the first review I've seen that talked about how it was supposedly designed to be balanced around all the characters, but I don't really see the issue. I mean, it's not as if whole segments of Palutena's Temple or Great Cave Offensive are completely inaccessible to Ganondorf, so why are side-scrolling levels being held to higher scrutiny in this regard? Besides which, while some characters are definitely more maneuverable than others, the entire cast can get by surprisingly well, at least partially by virtue of the fact that literally every character is capable of a double jump. I mean, the story to Subspace was awesome (and it's nice to see someone defending the original enemies), but I loved it simply for its basic premise: it's the Melee Adventure Mode expanded upon exponentially, to the point that it could practically stand as a full game all its own. I especially don't think it gets enough credit for featuring my old favorite platforming staple: having a world map which allows for every previous stage to be revisited at leisure (meanwhile, World of Light is so fucking linear, you can't even rechallenge bosses, lest you're prepared to wait out a 5-minute autoscrolling segment.... at least we're gonna get to fight any Spirit whenever we want soon). Do I think it's perfect? No. I do feel that some stages dragged on WAY longer than they should've, and they abused the hell out of spawn rooms. However, it could've been perfected with time...... which makes me all the more sad that Smash4 just dropped it completely. And then Ultimate brought back Adventure, only to castrate it of the one feature that made Adventure Mode stand out from every other mode in the first place: the platforming. That is such a god damn tease. And yes, I could see a lot of complications with featuring 3rd party characters and such in Ultimate, but truth be told, I'd kill just to get Subspace back. Doesn't even have to be updated much, just apply a straight port to Ultimate's engine, put all the new characters behind golden doors (much like Jigglypuff, Toon Link, and Wolf) and call it a day, I'd still most gladly play it. If anything, it feels absolutely criminal to have a roster as absolutely fantastic as Ultimate's, yet our only options for all of them are just vs. matches and Home Run Contest.
So first: the reason why I give it more scrutiny than, for example, Palutena's Temple, is that Palutena's Temple is just a fighting stage (and one I don't really like.) With full on levels built like a platformer, I gotta judge it as a platformer. As far as the level design goes, it's just a bit too simple. After playing something like Donkey Kong Country Returns or Tropical Freeze, with a really organic and dynamic approach to level design, Subspaces feels a little stagnated. It's very simple and blocky. That's not to say I hate it, I just would like if it had more going on. Second: Oh yeah I agree completely with the World of Light talk. World of Light was such a disappointment to me. It straight up took me a year to finish it because I just never wanted to play it. Third: if they did bring back Subspace and the golden doors were how the other characters appeared, I'd prefer they let you get them before entering the great maze. It'd make the maze a little cooler if I had that big of a roster to choose from. Anyways, sorry for the long response. Hope you enjoyed the video regardless of some of the disagreements about platforming.
@@DuoStuff No worries. As long as we both agree that SSE was awesome overall. Anyway, the way I see it, a straight port is probably the ONLY way we're gonna ever have even a shred of hope of seeing SSE in Ultimate, so the golden doors would be the most logical way to incorporate the new characters. Hell, if Snake's codecs are any indication, Sakurai could probably even get by keeping the Twilight Princess designs and such in the FMVs. That said, it might complicate the narrative a bit if the golden doors are available before Tabuu uses the Off Waves on everyone (when your party is supposed to be significantly reduced), but making them available right before the Great Maze instead of in the post-game isn't a bad idea. At any rate, Ultimate would be as good a time as any to re-release Subspace. God knows Brawl's been out of print for a while, and there's no telling if they'll have permission to use Snake again.
Dude I couldn’t agree more, it’s really cool to see someone give the appreciation this mode deserves, also I loved how you were so realistic about it at the end and how you still acknowledge it’s kinda sad how we’ll never see a story this good again. Loved the video bro
When i was a kid i wished that we could "free" a character from the trophy state like in the story mode for example: riolu being pretty much just a clone to lucario. Man i didnt know i was such a sadist thinking sakurai would torture himself like that
I loved Subspace Emissary's story so much because it's one that helped some people realize that no, King Dedede isn't a villain anymore and hasn't been for a long time; it brought me so much happiness back then. He may be greedy and stubborn, may love to taunt (honestly the smugness in Ultimate is just so satisfying) and be hotheaded at times, but the truth is that this story mode showed that Sakurai wanted to establish him as a character with good intentions who got misunderstood and also didn't use the best methods, but cares about others and wants to help them; the exact same theme he used for the character in Kirby's Adventure and that yet almost no one got, causing people to still consider him as "Kirby's Bowser". I mean, the fact that the badges and kidnapping were made so worthy heroes could help save the world from Tabuu, and that he didn't use one for himself even though he could do that, just says so much about him... Also, the scene he had with Kirby is absolutely adorable, they really are a found family, and appreciate each other a lot. Anyways, thanks for coming to my TEDede Talk.
When I first heard ultimate would have a story mode I was so happy! I really enjoyed the subspace emmissary and I will say this that the platforming other then the boss battles is actually a really good part of the subspace emissary I liked. When I found out what the super smash bros ultimate story mode was actually like in the trailer I was like " its still good right?" Then once I actually played it, it was fun for the first 20 battles or so then I just never finished it. I dont get why people hate the subspace emissary. And I dont get why people hate brawl.
@Sugarbunnies Or to put it in short, people weren't ready for a super-casual smash game. Even though it was released on a console whose entire target audience is people who barely know how a controller works.
I did not like 90% of world of light. However, I liked the Castlevania segment, and the last few fights where you literally get to play as master hand and then platform up to the final boss, kind of reminded me of subspace and made me happy, almost made it worth it but not really. Still really neat ending though!
@@somebody42069 me too I didn’t like world of light either, too long and a lot of portals to visit The only good part I found are the realms my fav was def the final battle & dark realm and specific places where you fight bosses for me it was fighting Marx, Galleom, Giga, Bowser, Dracula and Ganon since they all have specific places where you fight them the only boss I didn’t like fighting is Ratholas got on my nerves forgot to mention playing as master hand was the best part.
Honestly I’m fine if we don’t get a new Smash Bros any time soon. I just want a HD remake of Subspace Emissary. It may also allow Toon Link, Jigglypuff and Wolf to be added to the main story.
Man I remember playing a lot of subspace with my sister when we were around 9 and 6. Tabuu was super hard for us to beat I remember that. We dint really know any of the characters back then but the cutscenes were really cool and memorable.
It’s sort of crazy how this mode was essentially sakurai’s last attempt at making a traditional Kirby game, and you can clearly see that in its design. I wish they didn’t have to make all of the challenges able to be done by all characters, cause then I feel like it would have matched the quality of the Kirby games sakurai worked on beforehand.
I love the great maze so much and I never got why everybody hated it until I realized people play Subspace emissary in large chunks and try to beat the entire great maze in one go, I only ever played subspace when I got bored of fighting my brother so it was a huge sandbox with a map idiotic old me didn't get so my brother and I just fought our way through the humongous map. One of my favorite memories
I was looking specifically for someone with this opinion. Thank you! I was a young kid and I had my Nintendo Wii. Never played many games really. I saw Mario and played super smash bro’s brawl. Ended up being this amazing experience with a compelling cool story that even tho isn’t perfect is really good. You get attached to certain characters, there are tons of crossovers and honestly it felt fresh and nice to beat some crazy alien enemies left and right instead of the same cast over and over. Fighting a champion such as wario or an evil version of a character felt meaningful and rewarding. Platforming as much as I hear people don’t like. I thought it was really fun at the time, all these different mini puzzles and map mazes and platforming challenges. My cousin was younger than me and never really played games but we beat that mode together it was super fun. I just bought a switch for me and my girlfriend recently and I had not heard anything from smash ultimate other than some cool characters that are in it. I was so hyped and was thinking back to the memories of me playing the story mode all 3 times. I than bought a 63 dollar (with taxes) game and downloaded it. First cutscene hyped me up in story mode. But than I started getting more and more disappointed when I started fighting these cast members in basically custom brawl fights with atunements for no reason at all. No fight has felt meaningful yet. It’s just a maze of a board game with a bunch of random fights that are senseless. I still am gonna play this game for sure, and maybe try to beat the mode, but still I am slightly disappointed...
Brawl is my absolute favorite because it provided and incredible story mode, and it was multiplayer. And the visual textures were gritty and angsty and it was just fucking awesome. It provided personality for every character involved.
Sub space emissary is unique in that it got better with time. Lots of people complained about it but since then plenty of people have made more videos explaining why it was great. It has aged like fine wine
I love Subspace Emmisary, because of a few reasons. It's a pretty great way of introducing all the characters to new players. If you play the whole thing then by the end you'll have played as almost every character. You fight the generic enemies so much that by the end of that 1 level you're pretty comfortable with the fighter's moveset and play style. That and by the end you have unlocked all but 3 of the fighters. So yah, you get used to each character and completing it unlocks most of the characters. And it looks visually amazing
Thank you, DuoStuff. It really was a flawed masterpiece. But if you think about what was achieved, given the challenges, it was beyond amazing. Seeing the cutscenes as part of the opening, as the music soars to Link and Mario dodging those laser beams, gives me goosebumps every time. Frickin' genius.
Didn’t realize people didn’t like this mode tbh. My brothers and I loved playing it as kids. I wish we could get another mode like that, but I get it wouldn’t be easy for them to do.
I would love a second Subspace Emissary, even if there’s some characters missing, like Cloud or the DLC characters, I’d still love to see one with the majority of the roster, especially seeing some of these characters cooperate and interact with each other , like Fox and Wolf, Mario and Sonic, Peach and Daisy or the Inklings and Bayonetta
This game was truly a masterpiece and it shows what Nintendo can do if they put alot and I mean alot of passion World of light looks like Nintendo just wanted to give people what they wanted instantly
I came to brawl late, like 2012. I was a melee holdout who didn’t like how matches played at friends houses. Ended up trying subspace with a friend and was literally blown away. We beat it in two days. It was like “Nintendo - the game” It’s the only reason I kept the brawl disc after all these years. Brawl essentially inspired me to get a Wii U and was kind of disappointed by the single player offerings of smash 4.
The things is, Sakurai said that for him the cutscenes were a reward you'd get for playing the game and that he was sad that people uploaded them for everyone to see without "earning" them. So that's why we got animated reveal trailers (same conditions for watching them online or in the game) and only opening / closing cutscenes for world of light.
@@heavygunner4039 i feel the same. spirits is called glorified event mode, but i honestly consider it a toned down version. events at least has a story explaining the context behind the battles, and alternate win/lose conditions. spirits just has "win by defeating enemy, lose by being defeated or letting an ally be defeated". no "survive the stage until it completes the cycle" or "defeat the enemies in the right order"
Best part is that you can tell what the characters are thinking and “saying” without any dialogue.

I genuinely didn’t know people disliked this mode. I only have fond memories of it and was super upset when a story mode wasn’t included in smash on the switch
I hate it. Melee adventure mode was better.
@@lolwillow188 How so? Please elaborate.
@@lolwillow188 What why tho?
@@syweb2 I'm not really Into smash for a "story". Melee adventure mode was fun, quick and to the point, and it's interesting to see how playing through it changes from character to character. Brawls story just felt like a chore for a half baked kingdom-hearts-esq story. The only cool addition is the boss fights, but that could just be its own arcade mode and I'd enjoy it much more.
@@lolwillow188 you know a kingdom hearts writer did actually work on some of the plot of subspace emissary
I’m being serious when I say this is the third time I’ve played subspace this year
I wouldn’t say this is the only thing Brawl does better, it just has better single player content in general even if you exclude Subspace Emissary. All Ultimate really has is Classic mode and WoL, and I don’t think anyone would want to replay through WoL a second time which makes Classic mode the only good single player mode after beating WoL. With Brawl, none of the single player modes ever felt boring to me and they had a lot of replayability.
The brawl theme also gets if better than every other smash game

I thought everybody loved subspace emissary?! I’ve heard nothing but good things and had amazing times with it. It was the full blown game version of childhood fantasies and times spent playing with toys that had us use our imagination to bring these characters and stories to life. It’s honestly my favorite experience in Smash simply because it has all of these characters interacting and going on a story driven adventure. It was nothing short of magical seeing all these characters meet and interact, even though I didn’t know a good chunk of them before playing. Subspace Emissary was a masterpiece. The cut scenes ran smoothly(for it's time), some of the levels were cool, and overall, the story was so original (kind of) and much more fun than others in my opinion.

Me and my friends LOVED subspace. What is there to hate about it? It's a cool simple story where you get to fight and play as your favorite characters
Anyone else associate Stickerbush Symphony more with Subspace Emissary than the Donkey Kong games
Yeah. Every time I hear it Subspace comes to mind. I can’t think of anything else but Subspace when I hear it.
Oh my gossshh this was my childhood 😭😭 I loved the story to bits. I had so many memories playing this and fighting Taboo
it wasn't just the story the dark vibes you got with those graphics added movie like action scenes
Dude I couldn’t agree more, it’s really cool to see someone give the appreciation this mode deserves, also I loved how you were so realistic about it at the end and how you still acknowledge it’s kinda sad how we’ll never see a story this good again. Loved the video bro
Well thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video that much. =D
The coolest part was learning that the opening theme had English lyrics.
Honestly as someone who isn't much into Kirby, this was really interesting to read. (I enjoy what I've played, I just haven't played a lot.)
I remember when I first got Brawl back in the day, my friend and I beat the entire Subspace Emissary co-op in one day. So much fun and nostalgia
Subspace Emissary did the MCU before it was even a thing!
Even better is that Brawl had it all in one package, whereas the MCU had to do it over the course of several movies.
Except it's not Marvel and it's not a cinematic medium.
I just commented something similar to this lmao
@@cottoncandy3630 lol cool
To this day, the introduction of Sonic in SSE is one of the coolest moments I've seen in a videogame, and probably only few things could ever top it.
Honestly I’m fine if we don’t get a new Smash Bros any time soon. I just want a HD remake of Subspace Emissary. It may also allow Toon Link, Jigglypuff and Wolf to be added to the main story.
i loved this so much when younger. i loved the big maze at the end that straight up connected everything. plus rob was an amazing villain
I would've honestly preferred a shorter, Melee style, Adventure Mode in Ultimate over World of Light. That or Smash Run but expanded further.
avndute in madle ways eas as hell you coudl bea tin 20 mins that wodo be wost if money
Agreed, at the very least they should’ve kept the gameplay.
@@ssjgotenks2009 What?
World of light had really some potential, but it was destroyed because "KiRby HAd tHe WaRp StAr".
@@seereebee "adventure in melee was easy as hell you could beat it in 20 minutes that would be a waste of money"
Was I the only person who thought the Subspace Enemies being some sort of Heartless
I guess that's a comparison you could make. Though the heartless aren't quite as creepy looking as a lot of the Subspace enemies. XD
A UA-camr thinks that too!
It's funny you should say that, I think one of Subspace's writers worked on Kingdom Hearts so that may be where the influence is from.
@@serenemathew6201 Actually the person you are talking about wrote scenarios for Final Fantasy
If I own these characters I would surely do a Big Story Mode with Interactions just to make people happy Whatever it takes
This is one of the few games I actually put effort into beating when I was a kid.
HEY, I beat Mario as Kirby, not the other way around smh
It's sad that the only reason we didn't get a story like this ever again is purely because these cutscenes leaked online
7:39 this creature gave me nightmares as a kid, probably the only reason I couldn’t complete the campaign
This game was truly a masterpiece and it shows what Nintendo can do if they put alot and I mean alot of passion
World of light looks like Nintendo just wanted to give people what they wanted instantly
I came to brawl late, like 2012. I was a melee holdout who didn’t like how matches played at friends houses.
Ended up trying subspace with a friend and was literally blown away. We beat it in two days. It was like “Nintendo - the game”
It’s the only reason I kept the brawl disc after all these years.
Let's be honest. Spirits mode is glorified events.
At least events had a spin on them sometimes.
