- Adminless Windows 11 For Better PC Security
Windows grants administrator access to every user account by default, this is created during installation or setup of Windows. Its been like this for years and on every version of Windows since Windows XP. Admin access is protected by the UAC prompt on Windows, but now Microsoft is changing the security of Windows 11 for the first time in years. Windows 11 is now moving in a similar direction to macOS and Linux, which offer a root-less environment by default. So now users will have to authenticate using PIN or other Windows Hello methods to grant temporary admin privileges.

Just from your video, I like the feature, seems like a good improvement.
I think so too!
The feature itself is okay, but I don't like that they are planning to make it default.
You will need to enable it
@@Britec09 Oh ok, phew.
The method I'm using now involves creating two accounts: one is a 'user' account and the other is an 'admin' account. Both accounts are password protected. If you need admin privileges, you enter the admin password. This new feature is nice since you don't have to create two accounts, but most users will find this very frustrating.
Same here, I have two accounts and I’m always on the lowest privileged. I do this since the win 2000 era
I've survived without this headache since window 98 I think I can survive a little longer
Someone who knows what hes doing he can for sure live a chill long life even without Av/UAC...but for a day to day someone normal user i would sure recommend UAC but not PIN as they tend to forget stuff...
You have to type in a admin password just in install or play something? Ecch.
Most people cannot be assed to find out what the password is from your relative or whoever and will get turned off by this, I feel.
Interesting. But I have been doing this for many years on my laptop since it's portable. In local security policy you set UAC to demand credentials on the secure desktop and it does exactly that. If I go to install something, open admin mode CMD or task manager I get the secure desktop with a prompt for my account password. I only do it on a portable computer so that if I step away, nobody can get under the hood and mess with it. But what I do on every other system is I enforce consent on secure desktop so instead of a simple popup with yes or no, it always shows up on the secure desktop to limit the chance of automation being able to hit arrows and enter to accept it. Another way of doing it is having your original admin account and then making a standard user account for your actual usage of the computer and then you will see that same prompt for credentials to enter the username and password to get admin access, though whatever you run will be running under that admin account.
I'm defo adding it. We have a shared PC in my house and this is very much needed. Personally, I would make this a requirement by default, idk why tho.
I have all my PC's setup with 2 accounts the regular account without admin rights and the admin account. This is even better as it not only saves the hassle of setting it up but there is no admin account any longer, hence an attack surface less (though I don't know enough of the internals of this to be sure about that).
Just hope this will come in Home as well!!!
So the hardware requirements was just a gimmick to get people to buy new PC's and upgrade to W11 not actual security.
Even popping out the best window 11s video of anyone and they're so easy to understand I needed this one because I really don't understand why I'm not able to get some of the components turned on for the free securities I'm not paying for security anymore when does 11 security seem to work just fine for me
Glad you like the videos.
How is this going to work in an enterprise or other business environment? I am a consultant for the employees at the company I work for. I often have to access computers remotely and run things that require my Admin credentials. Even uninstalling something through the Windows add/remove programs and features requires them. When you pick a program to remove the uninstaller, it starts, and then UAC immediately prompts you to enter someone's SA (Secondary Account) credentials before you can click yes.
Microsoft are releasing more info in November
And depending on what you're doing for remote access, this is indeed a pain. If you're using something like TeamViewer and the like to remotely access a workstation, the UAC dialog appears on the host computer but not on the guest session -- so your remote session appears to be frozen until someone physically at the host computer can enter the admin password or select cancel.
@@nuk1964 for the time being, we are using the standard remote assistance built into windows but the company is evaluating different solutions such as bombguard or however it's spelled. They have given us access to the windows app but it's not being used at the moment.
With so many services that run with elevated privileges.. this is too little too late as things have moved on quite some time ago... even those that are familiar with old tools like meterpreter which allows task hijacking and masquerading will know where I am coming from...
But in all honesty you shouldn't be 'rooting your box' as if anything sneaks in and runs, it will have all the rights and privileges of the logged in user, so if its administrator it wont be just the account thats compromised it will be the whole machine, or worse if stupid enough to log into a domain with a domain admin account its game over for it... ... and yes this has happened quite a few times that I know of because some people are lazy.
About time. It should be ON by default, not legacy. Windows log-on security has always been far too wishy-washy. I can hear the whinging already.
no, no definitely no.... 😄
Is this similar to using non admin account? I guess you can do practically the same if you choose a user (non admin) account and type in a password a or pin identification, whatever suits you well. Anyway this is a progress in a way of protection for a typical win user
I've been doing this similar for years. Have an administrator account, but use a non admin account so UAC always asks for the admin users password.
Would this increase security on a computer where there was excluseively only ever one user and no one else ever had physical access to the machine?
Tried this in a VM, Win 11 Professional 24H2 (26100.2033) fully updated. Edited GPEdit exactly as you did, forced the group policy in cmd & set a PIN. Restarted & no change to previous. What build number are you using to perform this please?
Does it make W11 more secure from Microsoft? That's what I want.
Keep us updated if this comes to the home version!
Does this actually create another account in the users folder?
Can they bring back the windows 7 aesthetic
This method does not apply with my windows 11 at all
Once again, Windows is WAY late to the party...
already use it sinds my last windows inside updat , much saver
Good security, Don`t like the idea its by default, another choice taken away.
If it stops people installing rubbish that I have to clear up, it's not a bad thing! Although forgotten PINs will become more of a bane!
Moan, Groan, Moan, Groan!! LOL!!
Very good information thanks for the information
So nice of you
OH NO This is terrible!
I turn that shit off due to them flow ads that I don’t want that will piss off system administrators for business
That's fucked up
I hate to be one of those to say it but I will be leaving it off, that is one of the many things that I really dislike about linux, the constant need to be entering a password, it may be better and more secure but it is just too easy to click a UAC pop up than reaching for a keyboard and entering a password every 5 minutes.
Its a massive security update, but some people won't like it.
Finally; about time Windows goes 'secured' 👍 - Thanks for this important update. I give PCs to others with two accounts anyway and get them to type in the admin password, but this is desperately needed for those 'who don't get it', and the PIN is a major headache-relief for peeps who can't deal with long passwords.
GREAT VIDEO! THANKS! 👍
You're welcome!
This feature of UAC originated in Windows Vista.
For me personally I can see this becoming extremely annoying and i will 99.99% more than likely dropkick my computer into out of space and then it will be the most secure computer by tenfold
unless there are any martians 😁😁
You want security? then this is it.
It's not working on my PC Ace Magic AMR5 24H2 26100.2033 I followed all the steps and restarted the OS. Still it's not working.
Not out yet
I'm running Tiny 11 and this feature is missing, but I'm not moaning 😂😂😂
I don't think the feature is available in the current build of Tiny11.
I'm running original 11 and this feature is missing
probably because I have not set it up.
