Thank you very much for showing methods to block 23H2 from update. Apart from the Recall feature issue, another huge reason for people like me to block the update to 24H2 is that all Mixed Reality headsets will stop working after the update. MS pull out all supports to Mixed Reality environment and render the headsets to landfill! With the group policy, I can now extend my hardware headset usage for at least another 2 years.😀
Thanks for the vid! Am still on 23H2, fortunately and plan on staying on it for now, atleast till there is more known about this Recall and ways to disable it.
I will be wiping Windows 11 sometime today, 24h2 keeps making my screen glitch and removing my Background/wallpaper. This is was a fresh install and not an upgrade, also having issues connecting to my PC on the network which is my server for Plex and all my downloads go to it.
If you have an HP Reverb G2 VR headset then you'll also want to follow this video since updating to 24H2 will stop your headset from working with Windows.
Great Video 🙂👍 - nice & clear!! 🤔 - I just have one query: What does the AU folder in the Registry do, when Policy Editors (Win 10 Pro set to 22H2, Win 11 Pro set to 23H2) never use that folder, even though it exists? And you also, like me, tend to go with the Policy Editor's method when doing it manually on a Home Edition. What's it's funtion? Thanks in advance for clarification!
Haha surprised to see 24h2 being rolled out in my region. Good thing I read the update first before restarting the device because it was literally asking me to restart in order to update meaning it has already downloaded all the files lmao. I simply had to pause for 5 week to cancel the update and it deleted all the update files inside the c drive. Whew that was close! I still haven't finished playing Far Cry 5 and some other games like Odyssey. One minor edit, actually it failed to delete all the files (it was massive around 22gb!) and I had to delete it manually (inside c drive named $WINDOWS.~BT). Maybe I need to restart but nah my PC never gets restarted or turned off because there's no need to. You have to use disk checkup to delete the files.
I decided to just delay my update for 5 weeks because it just seemed easier for an elderly, non techy person. Now that the 5 weeks is over, the update to 24H2 is no longer there....just disappeared. I don't understand how that could happen.
I did this and it did not work, it's still asking me to update to 24H2. For anyone still having issue google incontrol.exe download the program and activated. You can freeze your version of windows and still get your updates.
I have Windows 11 Home and have following the instructions to change the registry to keep my system on 23H2. Is there any way to confirm that I did it correctly and it will stay on 23H2?
I did the update and it wrecked everything. And I have a fast new Win 11 computer. It removed my added Start button, removed all my system tray settings, it changed all font to an ugly font, I didn't stick around to see what ever else. I reverted, then came here. Thank you for your service! But after the revert (before and after I did what you show here), I can no longer right click on desktop to make a new Notepad document, that option is gone. Also, in the list of files for My Computer, Desktop is gone. WHY??

UPDATE , I followed your instruction 4 weeks ago with a fresh ISO install of 23H2 & this did NOT work as on the 12th of DEC they updated my system from 22h2 to 23h2 , so much for not letting MS update my machine. At work they do have full control through the update server for company wide WIN 10 Entrepise , but not with the ones you mentioned so far. I NOTICED that it says "at least" for server 2016 and windows 10, no mention of 11 ? . I have followed Steve at GRC for years along with Leo Laporte and Paul Thurrott , I noticed you mentioned INCONTROL from GRC, I just downloaded it and after having followed your instructions to the letter for the second time. now that it updated from 22H2 to 23H3 , ( Bitdefender notified me of a Critical Defender Update , so I let it do it BEFORE doing your procedure ) I downloaded INCONTROL & it said I have 4 of the 6 settings on ? so I clicked in control and it now says all 6 settings are done. I will keep you informed . I hope I'm not the problem in following your instructions ;)
"The maximum you can do is 365 days - 1 year" Me feeling so proud I found a way to block Feature Updates indefinitely without disabling Windows Update or any 3rd party tool. Also, at 3:54 you don't need to put a date in that box. If you just enter 365 it will block all Feature Updates until they're at least 366 days old.
Thank you very much. Very usefull info you shared. But, one question: with option 2, to remain on 23H2, updates for apps installed from Play store will work as normal ?
I can say that pausing updates does nothing. Sure, it holds back for a while but if you actually power off and boot after you get an update screen. supposedly I still have a humble week MS graciously gave me before update and it happened anyway
So, this tip is great and all. But, I have already been offered 24H2, just not installed yet. How to I get rid of the 24H2 offer that is in my system tray?
I did the update anyway after I made a disk image from 23H2, clean install and had a few problems. The new installer could not find the SSD or any harddisks. I had to revert to the old 23H2 installer that is an option in 24H2 installer. Recall is installed but it is not working on x86-64. I deactivated it. The only problem I noticed was a graphic glitch. Nero Video 2018 crashed one time during a video compres. After that I didn't have the crash anymore. The new explorer is worth the update. The old one 23H2 was really bad if you used the new 24H2 explorer.
I actually had already done the policy where you stayed on 23H2, can't remember who showed it to me. Quick question though, did Microsoft release an update that superseded the 23H2 update that was causing all the problems? I haven't updated for a while and was wondering if it was safe to do so yet.
Thanks Brian! I shall use this in the future. Trouble is I've already updated to 24H2 and I'm really annoyed. It's broken loads of stuff that worked before this debacle. How do I roll back this update as I'm really loathed to do a fresh install?
This situation is just silly from the average users point of view. Average users do not edit Group Policies, nor do they use Command Prompt. They just want the right to choose for what, and when, updates are performed. A simple check box forcing the system into manual update mode and a list of what to update should be standard.
Excellent and useful video. But, how do I do this on Windows 11 Home? There is no group editor and I do not see these registry entries on my end. Can I just add them into the registry? Or could you please make an explanation for the Home version. Thank you.
I will wait a good while yet before updating to 24H2. It's not that Microsoft is screwing up its Updates, It's that there are so many different hardware and software variations out there that Windows is bound to run into unexpected problems.
microsoft could have simply added an "advanced" option under windows update to stop all updates, but they don't respect their customers enough for that

@@KUOLEMA_ Dude first of all don't freaking tell me how to use my computer you freaking jerk. Another thing like Brian said Microsoft isn't using recall to spy on people if they were they would be under investigation from the justice department and Microsoft doesn't want that kind of negative attention. Also if you're another one of these Linux users you do know that websites, free anti viruses and vpn's also collect your information so you're not as private as you think you are even on Linux. Also if you tell me but there is TOR and the Onion router guess what you're not completely private or safe on that either and you have to worry even more about criminals stealing your private information and possibly tracking your exact location if you're not careful when browsing the deep web in the TOR browser. Heck you give up your privacy by just using the internet period and if you use a smart phone even an iphone you're still not completely private.
Brilliant Video brian, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Does this block Defender security updates too?
Check my video on how to just recive security updates m.ua-cam.com/video/cIOEf5t79mE/v-deo.html
No, mine just did the boring defender update even tho I disabled the 24H2 until past 2026...
Updating policy... how long should it take? Other laptop was quick other laptop it still updating after long time
"The maximum you can do is 365 days - 1 year" Me feeling so proud I found a way to block Feature Updates indefinitely without disabling Windows Update or any 3rd party tool. Also, at 3:54 you don't need to put a date in that box. If you just enter 365 it will block all Feature Updates until they're at least 366 days old.
I don't seem to have the option for 'Manage updates offered from Windows Update' in Windows 11 23H2. I only have the legacy and server options
Thank you!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Win 11 24H2 breaks HDR for me, using an Alienware AW3423DW, thank you for the tutorial so I can stay on 23H2
Just wondering what you think about Gibson research In control? Is it an easier solution ?
I'm curious as to how those who used Recall have found it. Does it affect the computer's performance? Does it hog storage space?
Thanks for watching

Describe how to bypass the requirement for POPCNT instructions supported by the processor
Thanks Brian! I shall use this in the future. Trouble is I've already updated to 24H2 and I'm really annoyed. It's broken loads of stuff that worked before this debacle. How do I roll back this update as I'm really loathed to do a fresh install?
Cheers for that!
Easier to do the same with Gibson's InControl app. Takes less than a minute
took me 46 seconds.cope.
This video here is very very usefull. Thanks a lot.
This situation is just silly from the average users point of view. Average users do not edit Group Policies, nor do they use Command Prompt. They just want the right to choose for what, and when, updates are performed. A simple check box forcing the system into manual update mode and a list of what to update should be standard.
Then become a lil' more tech-savvy or a lot more vulnerable.
Excellent and useful video. But, how do I do this on Windows 11 Home? There is no group editor and I do not see these registry entries on my end. Can I just add them into the registry? Or could you please make an explanation for the Home version. Thank you.

Or skip all the hard stuff and use WAU manager, works wonders for me.
I will wait a good while yet before updating to 24H2. It's not that Microsoft is screwing up its Updates, It's that there are so many different hardware and software variations out there that Windows is bound to run into unexpected problems.
Unfortunately, it is exactly that MSFT are screwing their Windows updates. It is getting even more prevalent as the months go by.
microsoft could have simply added an "advanced" option under windows update to stop all updates, but they don't respect their customers enough for that
I updated last week.. haven't found the recall feature yet..
I'm in the EU..I guess it's disabled by default here
this video could be the greatest single advise for those who still are 'clinging by a thin line of thread' on using w$11...
24h2 is not coming here. checked the update.
Excellent! However I do not understan waht the 'AU' Key is need for. I upgraded my personal machine by means of gpedit and there was in registry settings no subkey 'AU'! Is it really needed?
