What Does “This Generation” Mean?

  • What did Jesus mean when He said that “this generation” would not “pass away” before the prophecies about the end of the age were fulfilled? As Alistair Begg guides us through various views on this difficult passage, he encourages us not to lose sight of Christ when facing complex theological issues. Doctrinal peculiarities can sometimes be distracting; our growth in Christ and in holiness, though, should never be far from our hearts and minds.
    Scripture: Luke 21:32
    Preached: March 30, 2003

First, I say... Pastor Begg... an awesome message indeed! I have found that Matthew 24 was a mite easier for me to try to understand the "This Generation" meaning. Please consider that the disciples asked three questions: When the stones would be thrown down, what would be the sign of His coming, and of the end of the age/world. Jesus of course could have began by answering the first question first, but take note that it's obvious that He didn't... He began by answering the third question first...and then continued by giving a resume of the whole gospel day. Give it a try? I don't think you'll be disappointed. Yes, of course...the main things are the plain things etc. Nothing dogmatic intended!

Jesus came both in salvation and in judgement within a generation, as predicted on time and in full.

At 25:15 the pastor states that Jesus knew that He would not be returning within a generation.
Matthew 10:22-23, 16:27-28 and Mark 8:38-9:1 destroy that assertion and thus the whole premise.
Jesus returned when He said He would do, as Almighty God, who is spirit.

Using Luke 21 as your main source for this discussion as opposed to using the Olivet Discourse as recorded in Matt 24, which is much more complete, and then "plugging in" things mentioned in Mark an Luke where they would fit ( such as in the days of Lot to go along with as in the days of Noe' ) is a good way to cloud the issue. To confuse it enough to be able to say you can't be dogmatic about it.
    The disciples asked two questions.
When shall all these things be? (destruction of the temple)
What shall be the sign of thy coming and of the end of the age.
He skipped the first and answered the second. See Matt 24:6
He goes into a list of happenings that parallel the seals being broken in Rev 6.
Included in this list is the abomination of desolation in Matt 24:15. Daniel 9:24-27 tells us this occurs at the mid-point of the final seven year period.
The ultimate answer to their question about "the sign" of His coming is in Matt 24:29, the cosmic disturbances that Joel states in 2:31 occur BEFORE the Day of the Lord begins.
Paul also states very clearly in 2Thess 2:1-5 that the rapture (vs 1) and beginning of the Day of the Lord can't happen until after the falling away and the anti-christ is revealed by committing the abomination of desolation (vs 3-4)
It takes a bit of time to do the study but it is not at all a hard study.

Steps out of Delorean to comment, Adam and Jesus was of a 'type', we are not that. Could all of humanity for all time, past, present and future be a generation? Possibly the generation of sin. When I think of what is written in the bible, equally with what is not written, I am compelled to think of why this and not that. Many times I come to think, which doesn' t mean right or true, that the Book was not only written for the time period but also all time to come, speaking of the style in which it is worded. Written from eternities perspective, which may have the advantage of future thinking of 'the times'. As if all time were written on a scroll, from beginning to end to be viewed at will from eternity. I'm approaching a wall, just a thought on a fascinating topic. Great video Mr. Begg.

I've been thinking along the vein of after the crucifixion and the ability to be born again and how scripture speaks to us being asleep in Christ rather than passing away. Is it then possible that this generation refers to born again believers? Just a thought. God bless!

What help it?? Same excellent, exceptional poeple worked hard to put all together so we,now can read the Word of God in our own language, poeple of this age must now have/nead speakers to tell/deceive us from what is written. CAN WE NOT READ??
Why do we not ask the Holy Spirit to theach us.1 John 2 : 27. ( falling away)

Simple explanation, Jesus was wrong and these stories are apart of mythology of the ancient near east, within Greco Roman history.
