  • This is the penultimate video in my series where I both revisit the very first mead I ever made as well as advise on where I believe costs can be cut to maximize bang for your buck. This is especially true if you're trying out the hobby for the first time and are unsure if you want to spend a lot to get started only to find out it's not for you.

      Thank you for the feedback! It was really refreshing for me as a meadmaker to look back on my early attempts with a much more experienced eye.
      Hopefully people looking to make their first mead aren't intimidated and can learn different lessons when they start than the hard ones I learned 😅

    you are making some fun and interesting things bro. you got the sub. can't wait to look through your backlog of videos. ever think of trying to make the "mead with juniper berries" mentioned in skyrim? lol

    that mead in the primary container isnt waste just pour in a measure cup, let settle then pour into one glass and drink!
    i have the same corker, sometimes i feel like thor cause they just go in easy peasy lemon squeezy, then sometimes i feel like the weakest man alive because it is a struggle, lol.

      Let me know how it ends up! Did you use the recipe posted on the channel, or a different take on it?

      @@MethodtotheMeadness It is delicious haha, I followed your videos but left out the dandelion, and I also filled the water a decent bit past the gallon mark. It is definitely not as strong in alcohol content as yours was, but it is very tasty.
      I really appreciate your videos, you have taught me a lot and I now have a new love for making mead

      @@TemperedVenom85 I'm glad! If you do decide to do it again, I really do recommend the dandelion root tea. It brings an earthiness and a bitterness not unlike chocolate or coffee. Goes exceedingly well with the berries.

    Sooo happy I found your channel and this particular series you made! I’ve been wanting to make mead for a while now, but it can be so intimidating with the inundation of information and formulas and all that jazz. I’m so excited to try this method to start out!

    Its nice to see you going back to your roots and showing us how you started :)
    Can you remind me at which temperature do you do your fermentation steps ?
    Merry Christmas, looking forward for the next years videos !

      I do them at whatever the house is at. Typically between 68-72. I might do a fermentation in the garage for a Kveik yeast in the summer, but other than that, just comfy house temps.

    I soak the bottles in them in hot water hot water is a good natural cleaner and our water is well water and the water heater I can change the temperature for the water to scalding hot like I got in the shower and it fucking burnt me haha it takes half a day just soak it leave it comeback and wipe it with a paper towel. But for right now I'm just infusing stuff I gotta start somewhere I'm gonna move to making rum then gonna move to moonshine and then mead I'd love to make Medovukha it's a Russian kind of mead absolutely delicious. Check it out

      They really are the most convenient option. They come with a price premium, however.

    I''ve never made mead before and I'm looking to get into it. Can you bottle in old liquor bottles like, Jack Daniel bottles once they've been cleaned obviously? Or is there a reason to use wine bottles?

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  2 роки тому +2

      Great question! As you see in a lot of my other videos, I've been using liquor-style bottles with the T-Top corks, it's absolutely fine to do so.
      My friends tended to have more wine bottles available as they'd drink through them very shortly after opening them. Not so much with the liquor bottles.

    how long was this mead fermenting for? Did you ever strain out the apple and spices?

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately I don't quite remember how long it was, but the videos for this one were released pretty shortly after filming, I do see that part one and part two were released a month apart and part three waited a while after that (there wasn't a lot of headspace in the jug, so that one could afford to wait a bit.
      When I siphoned form primary to secondary the adjuncts were left behind.

    Honey question i have some local honey given to me & it has crystalized some… is that still good for mead?

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  2 роки тому +1

      Absolutely. you'll want to gently(!) heat it to get it back into liquid form for use, but honey in a sealed container does not go bad unless the container goes bad.

    What is a budget way to check the abv without the refractometer.

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  Рік тому +1

      You can always use a hydrometer, but I make such small batches that it was worth the money and slight hassle to get a refractometer.
