  • This is just moving the mead from Primary Fermentation into Secondary, and a brief discussion about potentially starting a Patreon for the Channel.
    I was right to use the balloon, for the curious, a small fermentation WAS sparked by the jostling of the siphoning from one jug to the other.

    Hello Friend glad to see another Video, I think you should do something that no one is doing and it wont cost you much more, It be really nice to help members that have had unsatisfactory results in a recipe and how we could do a possible improvement just be honest about outcomes and we can celebrate success or Laugh about the failures. this can be lots of fun and no one is doing it. is the key to all this not doing something that other s are not, yet it has great value?

    Unconscious incompetence. Sounds a lot better than ignorance is bliss lol. But so true, I did not try mead before making my own; I would like to believe it was good regardless, but it made it that much better.

      Yeah, if I'd had more familiarity with mead, I might've realized that mine wasn't very good in the comparison and gotten disheartened. Not knowing how bad you are at something when you start goes a LONG way in morale.

    you sir do awesome content. My friend and me started brewing mead. we soon start our 5th batch.
    I dont have money to donate but patreon always helps, do it!
    another idea is to sell your mead, do giveaways of your mead to subscribers, or make a patreon tier where you get a bottle of your mead.
    (you probably have to restict the shipping area in the beginning)
    my friend and me sell around 1/3 of your produced mead to reduce rhe costs.
    keep going and good luck

      I'd LOVE to be able to sell what I make, but I'm ng to open a meadery down the line and I'd like to stay on the TTB's good side until then. Gonna try and keep this as legal as possible until then.

    So you bottle age mead ? How long ?

      Welcome to the channel! on a bit of an unintentional hiatus, at the moment 😅
      This is an interesting question! it really depends on the mead. some are ready immediately and some are too sharp at first. Some are fine to drink immediately but have the structure to age for a long time if you'd like.
      Unfortunately, it's one of those things that you just have to get a feel for.

    Here’s my 2 bit answer. I would start by monetizing the channel if you can. And if you think Patreon is a good fit then do it. It’s just hard for viewers when a lot of stuff is behind a paywall. I too am toying with a channel. Having both channels that I follow with Patreon and free feed I will say that if done correctly the paid content can be exceptional. Ie bastards ball. Mull it over a while and go with your gut and the viewers will follow. Thanks bud.

    Well if you adding a patreon. Helps you run the channel. And improve your content. By allowing for better projects. By all means go for it. What type of barrels where you thinking? To barrel age on? And what size? Thanks again for revisiting you first mead, and what improvements you thought of. Have a great day.

      For the specific project I have in mind, a 5-gallon used bourbon barrel. Last time I barrel-aged I used a 10 Liter new charred oak barrel.
      Incidentally, I then sent that barrel to a distillery and they finished some Bourbon in the Mead barrel.

      On how the bourbon turned out? That was aged in your mead barrel? And how did the oak affect the mead?

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  3 роки тому +1

      @@Certawin I was able to get my hands on a sample bottle from them and unfortunately it was super delicious 😂
      I say unfortunately because mead-finished whiskey is a BIT rare.
      The barrel added different things in different stages, I aged 3 meads in it and new and used oak behaves a bit differently for each mead.

    • @Certawin
      @Certawin 3 роки тому +1

      @@MethodtotheMeadness Nice that it added to their bourbon. Mind me asking who it was that used the barrel after you? Or not able to disclose that? How did it compare the new oak barrel aged. To the aged after being used?

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  3 роки тому +1

      @@Certawin It was Crowded Barrel distillery in Austin Texas. To the bourbon, there was a definite honeyed undertone that melded nicely with the caramel and spiced flavors of the whiskey.
      To the new oak barrel, I added a dry traditional mead, which picked up some wood sugar sweetness, some vanilla, and some wood tannins for structure. I followed it up with a pomegranate bochet with some spices that went in tasting a bit medicinal (I used one whole clove per gallon), but that turned into an earthy tone after a while and the oak and pomegranate melded well. I followed it up with a sweet peach mead made with smoked honey, and that overpowered some of the impact from the barrel (but showed up a bit in the whiskey later on).

    Hello, Im about to made my first ever mead! Im so glad i found your channel, its a lot of help! I few questions, if I may... how much water did you used for this one, and is it okay if i use mead yeast instead of wine? Do you stir or shake it during fermentation and if yes how often? Also im planning for adding ginger in it, so how much should i add? Thanks in advance!

    • @MethodtotheMeadness
      @MethodtotheMeadness  2 роки тому +1

      So the amount of water is an interesting one, but the honey is added by weight per gallon of total must, so the water is however much takes for the rest of the gallon.
      Shaking and stirring is good for the first 48 hours during the propagation/aerobic stage of yeast development, but you'll want to leave it be after that.
      I've not used ginger in a mead before, but i'd imagine it depends on how it's added and the amount of surface area (grated vs sliced vs knobs). It'll be in there for a while, so you may want to add less than you would for like a ginger beer.
