- This is a video I made sharing some of the features of the app for most Canon cameras in the past 5 years or so! It's a great companion and I walk through how to set it up and use it.

Excellent video. Not only does he show how to set up, but also discusses why and how you could use this - very practical. The speaks clearly and doesn’t rush through his thoughts.
Glad I could help!
Great video Tony! I have never had an easier time using the Canon Camera Connect app than with the R6, it is so easy now and just works! Well done 👍🏼
Agreed! 👊🏼👊🏼
Hi Tony, how can you send your picture to an ftp or sftp server? What program works best on an IPhone? I mean straight from IPhone to sftp or ftp!
Super helpful. I just ordered an R6 and I almost bought an expensive external monitor but all I really need is a basic remote control. You saved me hundreds, man. Thank you, Tony!
Glad I could help! Just use the built in app! 😎😎
I recently received my EOS R6 and went to use it with my CamRanger and camera which was on a boom arm for shooting products. I spent a lot of time talking with the CamRanger people and we could not get it working. I was about to spend hundreds of dollars on a new CamRanger when I watched a different video on using the Canon Connect software. Today I got everything working with this canon software and saved myself a lot of money. I happen to use an iPad instead of a phone, but it all works the same as reported I’m this video.
I typically use my iPad when when I’m using top down shots! Glad you got it all working for you. 👊🏼
Now this is how a tutorial should be taught! Great content, thank you!
Glad I could help!
Great video, just got my R5's and hoping it works better than it did my 5D IV. I am from Wentzville, nice to see a local person sharing info.
Nice! Oh the R5 makes the 5D feel like a dinosaur in my hands. You’re going to love it. Small world by the way, I live in Wentzville!!
@@TonyMellinger Wow small world indeed, look forward to meeting you sometime. If you want follow me on Instagram @kyserphoto
Thank you for this video! So helpful! 🙏
Glad I could help!!
Excellent video. I have started shooting food and I needed this for those top/down views. Paired my iPhone 11 Pro Max but I am struggling pairing my iPad Pro.
Glad I could help! Hmm. Maybe the connection with the iPhone is causing problems. Using the iPad is really helpful for top down shots. I had to set up my iPad as a different device and different WiFi setup to get them both to work.
a number of times I have taken my R5 out and taken portraits of people. I'll offer to email or text it to them, their minds are blown when they see that in a matter of seconds, it's already on my phone. I could turn this in to a somewhat profitable thing if I wanted (pictures at recreational/school sporting events) but I enjoy just keeping it pretty casual for now.
Yea with a pro camera like the R5 and ability to transfer to your phone in real time, it’s magic! There’s always a balance once money gets involved, then it becomes a thing… and right now it sounds like you’re just enjoying the beauty of photography. Enjoy!
Good video thanks for posting.... just getting a new android phone so will be giving this connect app some good use with my R6
Awesome! Enjoy!
Hey, Tony. Nice vid. I’m curious if the app is able to convert the time from UTC to local time based on the time zone and whether or not it is Daylight Savings Time at your shooting location.
I’m not sure! That would be convenient though!
The 3 cs canon camera connect app setup useful. Remote functionality should b useful in the future.
Thank you for always good information
Glad I could help!!
Excellent and informative video. I've never used the camera contact on the R as it was not great. I have the R5 now so will try it out. Only question I have is, what effect does connecting have on the phone battery life? I understand using bluetooth isn't that power hungry. What's your experience?
That’s a good question. I think if it’s just with the Bluetooth, I don’t think it has much effect at all. I have noticed if the WiFi is turned on, it will go through the battery faster on both devices.
Thanks Tony for all the explanation. Coming from a Lumix G9 though (now owning an R6), if I compare both Bluetooth connections, I find Canon's app to be very slow in 1.adjusting the focus points 2.refreshing the preview. With the LumixSync app, you just tap and it focuses straight away and you see exactly what your flippy screen sees with no lag at all. With Canon's app it feels like I'm always taking pictures with a very slow shutter speed, soooo laggy. The same goes when you tap to focus. Any idea why? I have a Samsung S7, quite 'old' now by today's standards, so could it be that Canon's app performs better with newer phones and a more recent Bluetooth chipset? Thanks
Nope! I have the iPhone 11 Pro Max and I have this same exact issue. So it’s not your phone it’s the app.
@@alingeorge8791 Thanks! I guess I won't need to change phones then... :)
Great Video! I was wondering how far does the connection go for connecting your phone to camera? Do they have to be within a few feet of each other or can they go a little greater distance? Thanks.
Yea it’s not terribly far, but I can use it while using a 70-200mm to see framing, start/stop Rec, etc.
Thanks. Have r6mii and your video got me up and running. Can't download clog3 to phone yet.
Uh oh. That sometimes happens with new cameras. Hopefully soon! Enjoy the r6ii
Great video. Question for you. In manual focus, can i remotely zoom in the viewfinder in order for my focus to be precise? ( i pull focus with a remote follow focus ) if i double tap the live view on my phone, it zoom in, but i can control where it zooms in? Help! Thanks!
I know what you mean, but I’m not sure if you can do that in the app.
Hey do you know how to adjust the kelvin from the app
Im moving from a GH4 to an R6, the Gh4 has terrible autofocus so I always frame myself and then manually focus in the app. Does the canon app allow you to focus the camera?
Sure does!
very helpful video, thanks a lot
Glad I could help!
I’m a self shooter- I shoot with an Sony A7riii and the Sony app doesn’t allow you to focus🙄 so I’m thinking of switching to r5 because of this- but!! Can you do continuous shooting on it? I usually set the Sony app to continuous low which allows me to pose until I can’t think of anything else to do🤣🤣 but I get some great candid shots this way as well as what I was going for in mind.
It’s a kn expensive switch so I want to be sure I’m making the right decision …
And ty for this video!!!
You are amazing, Thank you!
Thanks so much! Glad I could help!
Good video. Does this app allow you to control the video shooting mode? The app sees live view but I can't seem to get it to start and stop when in the video. Any suggestions folks?
I’m not sure if it lets you pick the shooting mode, i almost always shoot in M though…
So do you can use this app for Canon as a monitor on the iPhone and the iPad? And you do this only through the WiFi or through the usb c port to the iPad as well?
I think on some of the new cameras you can use the USBC connection. That would be very beneficial
Used to doing old school firmare update. But wondering if the update is automatic when you connect to your Canon Camera Connect? "Wrench - 5 - Firmware Update" is not there but now simply just has a QR Code.
I’d imagine WiFi updates are coming, I don’t think they are here yet. That would be nice though!
incase you forget your sd card can you take the photos and gets uploaded to the app and once you get home transfer them to the computer? I have the canon R
If you forget your sd card, it can’t save the photo. That’s a great idea tho!
Works great with the R too
Sure does!
have you heard of issues with the app freezing with the r6.... Ive used the app with the m50 mk ii, m6 mkii, and the RP and never had an issue.... today I started using my new R6 and everytime after a few shots the app freezes and all I get is a gray screen in live view.... if I can go back and look at the images already taken, and still take images, and see them after the fact... have you heard of this happening and do you know of a fix.?? thanks and great video
I haven’t had much experience with the app freezing. I do wish the connection was more stable/faster though!
Does the app allow you to change the video frame rate while in live view? Also, For example, I want to live view 4k60P and record at the same time. On the Fujifilm X-t3 app, it limited live view to 1080p only, so although you can remotely record 4k60 on the X-t3, you couldnt do it in live view, so you just see a black screen on the app.
I’ve never had the video black out ever, all modes work on the canon app 🤷🏼♂️ I’m not sure about changing. When you say live view do you mean on the camera? Or in the app? I’m not sure if you can change the frame are or not in the app, I bet you can though
@@TonyMellinger yeah, referring to the canon app specifically. So you can definitely record in 4k60 and also see what youre recording on the app as its recording?
thanks for the tutorial here! just got R6 connected, and for video it's extremely sluggish 🐢 seeing the iOS app update the frame very slowly, refreshes one every 2-3 seconds?? Obv that's pretty rough, and wanted to see if yours performed that way/perhaps I'm overlooking a setting or something? thanks m8!
That seems a little slow, i wish they’d spend more time making this app better. I typically wont use it for direct monitoring just composition and go with it.
Is there any wired connecting method to eliminate the latency when shooting video? Does R5 support the DSLRcontroller App on andrioid?
Hmm I am not sure. You could use an hdmi/monitor to remove the latency and control the camera w the app. I’m not sure about dslr controller, i dont have an android.
Lagging problem! Is it possible to get Eos Utility 3 on the Canon and connect it with USB C? Do you know if it's possible?
That would be cool, but I don’t know if it is possible
Hi Tony, your detailed vid is much appreciated. My Canon is just out of the box, an EOS1500D & phone is Android OS13. The phone app is nothing like your experience. Many Canon folk are grizzling. The pics taken don't appear anywhere, certainly not on the SD card, no option to do anything with images...that don't appear anyway. Nor is there an option to alter camera settings & no connect via BT option either. Nor an update option in the app. Something seriously amiss here. What do you think?...Roger 🤔
Bah. I don’t know why they dont spend more R&D on their app. Wish i could help ya! I have no experience with the android app
Can you control Auto Exposure Bracketing in app as well?
I dont think so.
What is the special of wire ethernet transfer and FTP support that comes with the grip and only comes for R5? Is bluetooth or wifi transfer do same same job as wirless transfer? Is it faster transfer by ethernet? Would you please clarify it? Thank you very much!
I think it’s faster and more stable. Really good for tethering into Lightroom. You can instantly see what’s happening, really good for a client monitor
Thanks for the video. Pity it cannot transfer HEIF images, or at least I don't know how?
Yea, I’m kind of surprised. I just transfer RAWs so that doesnt impact me too much
Can we manually control focus through this app? (like.. manual focus)
I am not sure. I typically just use the AF and tap focus
Does the autofocus work with this app?
And how does it work in the app?
Autofocus works. You just tap on where you want to focus, just like the back of the screen on the camera 👍🏼
I have a cannon powershot elph 360hs and I can’t record videos with the app.. any tips?
I’m not sure. I just read canons description and it def has Wi-Fi/canon connect app. Does it work for photos, just not video?
Thanks for the video, Tony. It has been very helpful to me.
What is the approximate Wi-Fi operating distance between the r6 and the phone? In my case, I can't get more than a meter apart before the connection breaks. I don't know why this disconnection occurs but I understand that this is not normal. What do you think? What could be the problem?
Hmm. I’ve never really had a connection problem to be honest. As long as I’m in the same room with the camera in sight i haven’t had any problems. Download time does get slower the father away I am though.
@@TonyMellinger Thanks again
Nice video. Good help. Four minutes wait for useful information.
😎
Please please tell me can we see what's being recorded by our camera on our mobile when we vlog and the camera doesnot have a flip screen????
Yep. Sure can.
Can you transfer videos with the app?
I think you can, it would just take forever
I,m thinking, would it be possible to shoot selfies with the R6 with this app?
Absolutely would! That’s how I took my thumbnail photo for UA-cam!
I saw there is an auto download feature to the app, but you didn't mention it. Will that send photos directly to the phone without having to choose them?
I’m not sure, I haven’t used it, interesting thought though! It would eliminate one major timesuck in the process if that’s what happened.
You said you were going to talk about transferring video and you didn’t. I’m trying to figure out if I can transfer videos from my R5 to my phone for Instagram upload.
You might be able to… but it would take so so long. You could get an SD card adapter and just transfer it right into the photos app and edit in luma fusion or something though!
Is this able to transfer videos to your phone as well?
I think you can, it will just take a really long time
One thing they should do that Nikon didis to update your R6 or R5 via the connect app
I saw that Nikon just came out with that. Just recently right?
Tony Mellinger I know at least the z6 2 if they came out sooner I would’ve probably went with that instead of R6
This is going to be such a valuable tool when it actually works.
In my experience, the app crashes frequently when trying to move photos from the camera to an iphone.
Lastly, wireless depends on network connection - when you're in the field, unless you find a free wireless connection, you'll be using your cell service connection $$ (in some cases).
But, yes, it does work excellently as a remote for video shooting in my experience for wireless. But bluetooth works flawlessly... although is very limited in scope of use. Can only use it as a remote.
(1D series body)
Do you agree that it’s way lagging way too much to use as a video monitor. It definitely should be able to. There has to be a cable connection available and not only wireless.. what do you think?
Yea, it would be hard to use this as a video monitor for important shoots. What I’ll do is use it to lock focus on a face but I wont rely on it.
Can you use canon connect to live feed to Facebook or zoom?
No, you have to use a usb cable plugged into the computer
@@TonyMellinger Would the cable that feeds my new MacBook Pro from it's charger work? I have a USB adapter off my MacBook Pro that I could plug into
@@glynnelectric yep. Should work just fine!
How long you can use live-view on cellphone/tablet before camera shutdown?
And also, can we view live-view on viewfinder during wireless live-view to cellphone/tablet?
All Sony cameras CAN NOT do live-view on viewfinder while viewing wireless live-view on on cellphone or tablet.
These are good questions. I haven’t really tested these. Live view control on the phone can be used as long as you want I think. I’ll use this setup for when I have a top down shot frequently. I will check what happens with the screen and viewfinder once the phone takes control of the camera.
@@TonyMellinger Were you able to see in viewfinder (live-view) as well as wireless live-view on a cellphone or tablet? Many cameras like all on Sony can not do that, which is a major drawback.
I asked many in regarding to live-view viewing on a cellphone or tablet or pc on how long until shutdown. And no one has the answer including companies.
Again just viewing on wireless live-view.
@@angelisone I dont know if you ever found the answer to this, but YES! I am able to see the live view on the cell phone AND still have full functionality of the EVF and backscreen live views.
@@TrevorMaliszewski Are you saying you can see live-view on a cellphone & see live-view on the EVF?
Sony and other brands can not do that, they get live-view onto camera's LCD, not on EVF.
Hi! Are you able to connect the canon connect app and a remote clicker at the same time for self portraits?
I’m not sure, I don’t have the remote clicker
Kindly help, I can connect easily but when I press on Canon connect to take photos, it said "Captured Failed" why cannot I captured though it is connected perfectly
Wow, that’s no good. I’m not really sure, the only thing I can suggest is to uninstall everything and try again 😞
@@TonyMellinger thank you, the memory card was full, that was the reason, now it works well
@@ArwaHub oh! 🤦🏼♂️😂 easy fix!!
Is it possible see the menu through my smart phone?
I think some settings but not all of them
Why doesn't mine have volume indicators in the video shooting page? How to activate them?
That’s so weird!
Can I asked you from where did you order your R5 and how long did take for it to be shipped? I ordered mine from b&h and i haven't received mine yet!
I ordered my R5 from B&H too within 24 hours of the launch. If you did too around the same time, I’d imagine yours will be here soon!
I use it with RP & G7Xii .. the only difference is that in G7Xii there is no blue tooth , so you have an extra step of connecting wife manually ( you go to wife and select the camera )
Right. That’s the way I set up my older cameras too. The g7xii is one of those legendary cameras!! Love it!
I tried for hours, but it won't connect to my phone via bluetooth, it will via wifi, but it's a bit of a pain as you have to go through a connection process each time you want to use it. I've ordered a remote shutter release as the app takes too long to connect each time and sometimes just won't if I don't have signal.
It is glitchy. I’ve heard some of the new cameras actually will connect with a usbc cable which would be really nice
does anyone know why the flash does not work while taking photos through the app? when I hit the camera button the flash goes off but when hitting the button on the app the flash does not work. is there a fix to this?
i figured it out. on my canon 80D i went to menu on camera settings. went to setting number 6, silent LV shoot and disabled it and that fixed the problem. aparently while using siletn shutter the flash wont trigger.
That’s weird. Does the 80D have a flash?
Mines isn't transferring my raw files only gives me jpeg transfers even though it seems it in the camera as raw
There’s a setting you have to change it to download the raw 8:24. Did you do that? 🤷🏼♂️
About how long does it take to download a full res raw photo?
Good question even though the R5 has the faster 5GHz the files are really big so I think the R6 is slightly faster. I’d say somewhere in the 30 seconds range
Thanks! Was hoping for faster transfer compared to 5DIV but with the larger file size sounds like close to the same.
@@ThePowellsTravel yea, it’s be nice if they could speed that up significantly
@@ThePowellsTravel - transfer speed will always be dependent on download load mbps cabability of the wifi network. , but
5ghz and 2.4ghz is the same speed. Only 5ghz is currently less used so access and download will be faster - for now. Once everyone is using it, it will be the same as 2.4.
Btwn you and me, wifi is convenient, but not great. And if you're not on password protected network, the contents of your phone are virtually free for the taking for anyone who would. Be careful of what network you connect to.
Just my 2 cents
Tony, as far as I know Raw transfer only works on iOS and not on Android.
- Can you check that and if it does work, tell me how you did it?
- How do I do bracketing from the app?
- Please also make a video on how to use Image.Canon.
Hmm I don’t have any android devices. You may be right on that. Do you mean focus bracketing, or exposure bracketing? I may will probably make a video on image.canon. 👍🏼👍🏼
@@TonyMellinger Thanks for your reply! I mean exposure bracketing. I can probably set up the camera to exposure brackting and then press the shutter button on the phone 3 times. That works. But on DSLR Controller for example I can set it up in the app and then press the shutter button a single time in the app. I can also set up, how many exposures I want and how far they are under or overexposed. That´s how I want it to work.
@@stefanklein1863 nice! I’m not sure if it is in the camera connect app. That sounds like a nice feature
@@TonyMellinger Only problem: DSLR Controller isn´t compatible with R5/R6. I used it on my 7D Mark 2 and it was really great.
I try to transfer a video and it says failed always..the video format is not supported..I have I just phone 6 and canon camera
If you shot in Log, I don’t know if your phone can play it
@@TonyMellinger me too..but I couldn’t broke my head.for this I bought a cable usb to transfer video on my iMac and it works perfectly!

That’s super weird. Have you updated your iPhone recently?
@@TonyMellinger no I didn’t update recently..it needs?(photos are sending ..videos no)
I tried the app with a strobe and was not successful, all images washed out?
Hmm. I’m not sure how it works with a flash. I almost never use one

Why can’t zoom more than 5x while on remote live shooting ?
🤷🏼♂️
I love the big feature to connect my R5 with the phone to get GPS...
... my old 5D M IV has GPS build in it!
No Phone needed, no GPS adapter needed!
Yes I agree. Fortunately the gps Bluetooth connect process is pretty easy and intuitive. I love having that metadata!
Do you still need a SD card in camera when taking pictures with the app ?
Yes, it captures the images to the card, not wirelessly transferring them to your device
I keep having to reset the wifi (from scratch) each time. I'm using the R5. Anyone experiencing the same issue?
Hmm I had trouble with this for a minute. Can’t remember how I fixed it 🤦🏼♂️
The r5 won’t find the access point it keeps searching
Hmm has your phone been connected before? I’ve had to “forget this device” and restart before and that helped
The problem with "Image.Canon" is that in the terms and conditions they say they can use your photos for their AI system as long as it is on their servers! So be careful!
🤷🏼♂️ #bigtech
That app sucks. You can't even connect to it with a cord to use your phone as a monitor, instead it just searches for wifi connections with a weak signal.
It would be nice if you could connect with a wire with zero latency
I am very disappointed with this application, it was simply necessary for me, but it is impossible to work with it, it shows the picture in real time as slowly as possible and constantly freezes for me, canon R6, iPhone 11 and very good Internet, the problem is clearly not on my side ...
That’s weird. It is not as stable as I’d like it to be sometimes. Are you using it for photo or video?
This app worked fine on my Galaxy Note 8 but it is terrible on my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. To work on my Note 20 Ultra, I have to delete the app and install it every time. I'm done with this garbage app. I don't think Canon has updated this app in years.
It’d be nice if they did some good updates soon
@@TonyMellinger agreed
Won't stay connected to camera and when it does it won't even let me use my video mode on camera it's a piece of shit.
Wow that’s weird.
Lose the background music, if you are talking. It's a pointless disruption.
Thanks for warching
why are camera companies so stupid? It doesn't use it's own metadata? Can I get only photos that I have rated in camera? If I take bursts of raw images I only want to actually use 1 image from that burst and edit it in lightroom. Then multiply this by 100 because i do fast action concert photography. Canon's Desktop software lets me do this, I wish I could just do it on my phone. Oh well.
That would be really cool
5 minutes of needless chatter...waste information is good but too chatty
