I want Jordan to do a video about why he hated using the Pentax K-01!
Of course I can tell the difference between the S1H and the K-01, but it's less than I expected.
This goes to show that, whatever camera you have, as long as it has a video mode, you can make movies with it if you understand exposure, audio, and lighting. Hence the video before about Jordan having to lug lights around when using the K-01.
We have long since passed the "good enough for UA-cam" standard. It's actually a great equalizer.

This is an excellent video with a lot of great tips, especially Jordan's tip about setting the cameras in video mode to "locked on" for servo tracking. But man, I couldn't understand that initial point AF explanation from Chris at 7:40 to save my life lol

As an Canon R6 owner I can highly appreciate this. I also put the animal/people toggle under 'my menu' early on as indeed there is no other way to quickly toggle this instead of using custom mode. We have two photogenic cats so being able to switch quickly between taking photos of them and human family members would be nice ;-) It would be great if Canon made this switchable in i.e. the quick menu in a future firmware update. And regarding the R6's lack of custom video modes. The R5 top menu offers more flexibilty of course than the mode dial on the R6. But I could image this could be implemented in a different way, and I also wonder why the C1, C2 and C3 modes are exlusively reserved for photographs. I use my R6 during working hours as a very high end webcam in combination with a HDMI capture card in the home office. Now I have to reconfigure the resolution, frame rate, HDMI output setting and sound recording mode... so yes I would really appreciate custom video settings :-D

Thanks. I just realized while watching this video that a recent webcast went bad because I had one-shot set instead of servo. Rookie error. The R6 is phenomenal. I hope to have an R5 in a few months. P.S. the K-01 footage was actually decent, although that's likely a testament to Jordan's skill as a videographer.

As an addition to the AF settings, I am shooting wildlife the the R5 and like to set the tracking to start from the last used point (second option), but configure my AF-on button to start the tracking when pressed. That way you can use the "normal" AF points to prefocus and then start the tracking immediatly from where you are when you get something to lock on.

24mm and up the IBIS works pretty good. I also frequently combine it with digital EIS and get really good results. I don't know why people expect to film at 16mm with IBIS and not have any kind of wobble. Even with Olympus you need Digital EIS to crop out wobbling corners.

Thanks for the tip on the option of 8-bit recording. I've been hearing the horror stories of difficulty editing the H.265 10-bit files. I'm assuming that 8-bit quality would be reasonable. I used to shoot interviews in 1080/24 All-I with my 5D4, which of course was 8-bit, and I got nothing but compliments from the production people. Possibly for broadcast purposes I'd need 10-bit?

Chris and Jordan, I reviewed your video again regarding R5 settings for the video part because I'm shooting more video and need to get batter at it, so your setup tips are helpful. However, I wanted to bring to your attention a point about R5 video settings I watched on another video. He suggested that for video, you need to set the minimum ISO at 400 because that is the R5's default and you should not be shooting video below ISO 400. I hope I have described that correctly. What do you know about that, and is that true? Love to hear your feedback

For R5 hybrid shooters, could I suggest another configuration for the C3 video setting rather than 4K/120p with a 180-shutter angle? I find it is useful to always be ready to capture unfolding events, impromptu-style - you never know what you will encounter. In photo mode, pressing the "movie shooting button" starts recording video, using C3 video settings. It is therefore useful to have C3 configured with this in mind, which for most probably means automatic settings (P-mode, auto sound levels...) as it is better to capture the action rather than tune perfect parameters but miss the shot...

You forgot one: R5 also has the ability when in photo mode to have the top video record button activate video custom mode 3 when pressed. Very handy for people who may want to shoot some photos and quickly grab a video clip at a wedding, for example. I recommend setting it to 4K non-HQ mode so there are no "overheating" timer issues.
You can also set custom mode to 8K and this can be very handy for wildlife or action sports photography when fast shutter speeds are used in video. You can basically get 8K 30fps "HEIF photos" extracted from the video file.

As to what next from Canon... I'd love to see a digital Canonet. Full-frame sensor, slim down the form factor from the R# line and make it ideally rangefinder-style rather than SLR-style, maybe lightly weather sealed, fixed lens with a focal length of either 45 or 50mm, aperture under f/2, integrated ND filters to make it easier to use the fast lens in full sun.
Such a camera would stand apart from the Fuji x100v, Sony RX1, Leica Q2 by having longer focal length and faster lens for shallower depth of field. A new 45 f/1.6 would be ideal, and replicate the look of film Canonets, maybe with a closer MFD than the RF nifty 50. However, just using their existing 50mm f/1.8 optics, with the RP sensor and processor, in a smaller rangefinder body would be fine.

    • @thebitterfig9903
      @thebitterfig9903 3 роки тому

@Apple Pear That's fair. Never had an old Canonet, but the cameras I shot in high school and college were a Konica S2 Auto (alas, I dropped it and broke the shutter) and a Minolta SR-1s that used to belong to my parents. I've also been scanning in some of their old slides--including an old mirror selfie my mom shot on the Konica, some driveway portraits of my older brother when he was like 2 that my dad shot on a Minolta.
The best nostalgia products take what we like (a relatively compact form factor, the normal field of view, shallow depth of field), but mix with the best of the modern age (advances in optical design, the convenience of digital, good autofocus). I can imagine having a lot of fun with, say, a Canonet RG18--can't be QL since no film to load quickly!

Kind of idiot proof starting points for all settings, from which you can adjust as you gain experience with the camera. As is it is a little fast and tech heavy for my old school, old timer brain. I actually disagree with something that was said about the AF settings. They mentioned "Never use the AUTO" initial AF setting. IMO, this is the worst advice. True, depending on your subject Initial point will likely be better, however, there are some small in frame subjects that using Initial point is too difficult. For those subjects (birds) the AUTO setting is my favorite.
