    Two bass players walk into a hotel room.....one is Robert Trujillo, who, prior to joining Metallica, played with Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne. The other? Sam Dunn, formerly of Burn to Black and currently the guy on BangerTV who asks the deep questions. Sam and Rob sat down before Metallica's sold-out club show to discuss Hardwired....to Self-Destruct, its killer track "Spit out the Bone," and the role of bass in heavy metal music.

    Robs the coolest guy ever! In 97 when I was 17 and I snuck backstage at an ozzfest and ran in to rob, being a big suicidal fan I approached him and told him I snuck backstage and told him I wanted to meet Ozzy. He said it would be hard to meet Ozzy but gave me his backstage pass and told me to hang tight and came back with tony iommi and Ozzys autograph. He hung out with me for about a half hour and even introduced me as a famous guitar player to some chicks. I'll never forget that night! Rob is the man! Cool dude!

    Rare moment when we have something with Rob on music. Sometimes I feel like nobody else cares about songwriting. For me this is the most important thing - music itself as a core. More important than sound, tuning, brand of instrument, and other stuff. .

      Andriy Vasylenko - As a musician I think things like tuning and sound are really an essential part of the music. - It wasn't for nothing that composers like Mozart and the like would insist on certain instruments being used or pieces played at a certain tempo. - In my opinion and experience whenever a band like MetallicA rushes their songs (playing at an inappropriate tempo) or in a different tuning, they're doing a disservice to the original music and thus songwriting. - So I can not agree that things like sound and tuning (7:48, and he states it, but they still ignore that fact live) and the like are less important. - Brands and things, yea, that's more superficial. But people underestimate the sound and feel around a piece of music, which dictate what the song feels like in the end.

I listened to all of their major albums in chronological order (st anger excluded, i want to hear that in a time of its own) and loved every bassist. Cliff was the GOAT, jason was nothing short of a beast during gigs giving 120% everytime and the last ones with Rob, the chillest of them all, that fits great in the band since now they are older and more chill.

    I think Banger will come to regret his tepid review of the new Metallica album. The album wears really well. The more you listen, the more the songs become firmly entrenched in the pantheon/catalog. There are truly great songs, epic riffs, and memorable vocals. Ultimately, I found Banger's review to be a bit unfair -- thoughtful and well reasoned yes -- but unfair.

    • @Pepsolman

      4 admittedly awesome tracks & 8 average ones with lacklustre drumming the whole way thru does not a great album make

    • @Pepsolman
      @Pepsolman 7 років тому +6

      TheSt0rmrider I disagree. You probably only give 4 songs the "great" nod only due to the speed of the songs... which makes too many old school Metallica fans stubborn and unable to appreciate med-tempo songs. I think we can agree on at least 3 songs being unnecessary filler. I actually like 8-9 songs more than anything I've heard on Death Magnetic or Beyond Magnetic. The production alone makes them winners. I do want something more though when it comes to the sound (more reverb and ambience on Lars' drums). But this album beats DM by a landslide.

    Great interview! As a bass player that started playing in 8th grade when Rob was in Suicidal, it was great to see you two communicate bassist-bassist. Also, it was almost like a justification to what I've been saying for eternity by getting Rob's take on Geezer. Cheers!

    Lars can be a handful sometimes as we have seen from the past, but he's personality is actually pretty good and needed for making music. Because he knows how to write good music and when he hears something that has to be there, then he fights for it. The same goes for James. I am grateful that Lars, James, Kirk and Rob still make music together and tour the world, because alot of us need the music that they write.

    Man, as a bass player I NEVER want to just double up the guitar lick. Rob's always been a FANTASTIC player and he's pretty much wasted in Metallica simply "doubling up the guitars".
    Sheeeesh, Jaymz and Krk already play practically the same lines. Hardwired would be SO MUCH better with more...little lead breaks, alternate guitar lines, dischordant shit, vocal harmonies....tunes not in Em :P
    AND....the bass should go with the drums! Not the fucking guitars! Rhythm section lesson one.

    • @njldst2007
      @njldst2007 7 років тому +1

      Most Metallica songs have the bass following the guitars instead of the drums don't they? It's one of the things that set apart Cliff from the others in the very beginning too that he played guitar style licks and fills. Also, in thrash metal, the rhythm guitar often goes hand in hand with the drums, acting as an additional percussive instrument at times. That being said, did you mean that he didn't add any texture to the songs? Something a Cliff or a Jason might have done?

    • @bazzzzz6175
      @bazzzzz6175 7 років тому +4

      Hahaha, yeah, that's true. I guess I just mean the Metallica aural palette could be ever more expansive, rich and colourful with a player such as Rob. But he's simply confined to what the 2 despots let him do. Which is basically the same as Jason before him. They may as well still Have Bob Rock playing with them.
      I've found, of all the so called big 4, only Frankie Bello has a pronounced and identifiable bass sound these days, but then, he always did :)

      Different tastes and opinions notwithstanding, I wouldn't say it's the most well rounded, and there certainly are two or three songs, at least, that could qualify as "filler-ish". It's a good album, with a few great songs. But personally, Death Magnetic grew on me much more over time. The only major flaw with that album, was the awful (loud) post-production/final mix, which was not the band's fault.

      Mottahead it's called being a professional. Simply put, Rob doesn't seem like the guy to take reviews personally. You see, most musicians would think this guy hates them personally because they didn't like an album but not Rob. Rob obviously respects this dudes opinion and knows it's just that and that not everyone will like olé everything that Metallica puts out.
      And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the difference between an amazing dude and about 95% of musicians on this planet.

    This metal geek actually surprised me. Great interview! Well thought out and engaging. Nice work. Rob is a beast. Saw him years ago with suicidal and this year with Metallica. Glad to see him getting paid. I miss Cliff. He was one of a kind. And banged head like I did in the 80’s. I think Jason got a raw deal. They never let him integrate properly. He had a lot more to offer. Perhaps if they would’ve given Jason as much room as they’ve given Rob creatively, Jason wouldn’t have wanted to do his side project (Echo Brain). And he’d still be with Metallica. Not to take anything away from Rob. He deserves to be where he’s at. But so does Jason. Just tragic. You lose Cliff, and in a sense you lose Jason in a sort of tragic way too. Anyways, great interview 🤘🏻

      My thoughts too, mate! Rob is a killer bass player.. but they never had Jason sit with them and jam out tunes and let him have the input Rob has had.. and another note, it's taken from 2003 to 2016 to get to a place that the band had w/Jason as of Black, finding that place between playing every note and the sitting in the groove! Anyways, don't get me wrong, I Still love the band! :)
