Interesting. Bit like Microsoft with Office.
The bigger issue is market capture. You are bought into the SRAM world and it’s expensive to move away. This isn’t good for consumers

BMW went down the recycled path with parts some time ago, about the same time the quality of their vehicles went through the floor.

Sram most pathetic bike company ever?
I have Force 22, and I love it, but I would not get into this throwaway, overpriced scheme ever.
I simply love cycling, and as a hobbyist I realized a long time ago, that a decent affordable bike can give me as much joy, as some astronomically priced unserviceable marketing bluff.

Don't throw away your old bikes with mechanical groupsets.
One day, they'll be in great demand.

It’s cheap and reliable. Running Apex 1 on my Specialized Crux all purpose bike and at the moment have no need for anything better. Once I have lost enough body weight then maybe I will consider Rival 1 or Force 1 mechanical for the extra grams. Lol!

Idea pitch: subscription for electronic brakes. Basic on/off functionality at purchase, fully customizable modulation at monthly payments😈

SRAM probably don't expect you to keep your bike for more than 4 or 5 years & as such the first owner of the bike will not encounter issues with disposable components, by which time they'll have an updated version on new bikes. As for the second owner & owners who wish to keep their bikes, they'll be stuffed & forced to upgrade. The best thing to do is avoid these products in the first place & maybe the manufacturers will have a rethink ☺

Absolute BS. The car manufacturers are talking about having the consumer subscribe for options on cars. No surprise that the bike industry is doing something similar. I wonder what happens to bikes that spend years of inactivity. The owner still have to pay? The only thing this guarantees is that manufacturers will have continuous revenue. Heck, the way electronic group parts become obsolete ( ie. Dura Ace 7970 and Ultegra 6770), you end up having to replace the entire electronic groupset due to things like junction boxes or replacement batteries no longer being available.

Yep of course, it is about money 💰

If you could subscribe for an entire bike with no additional cost that might entice some people. Say $1000 a year for a high end bike that includes servicing, repair, etc. Bike is then replace every 2-5 years or something like that. Myself, I hate subscriptions, afterpay, etc. but some people like them as it’s not a large initial outlay of money.

It may help with recycling or reuse of products rather than binning them. Pay a subscription fee, and you get new products, maybe even improved ones, without having to go all in. Brilliant scheme. Keeps you in the product family as well.

    Not all is bad.
With SRAM AXS System you can pair Road shifters with a mountain bike derailleur. Upgrading your bike from 11x to 12x and you can keep the levers. They even have AXS dropper post which can be operated by the shifters or blips. Also the user can configure the system. And as it is wireless it makes building the bikes rather easy.
Electronic shifting is not everyones taste. But SRAM has a good product and their philosophy makes sense. I think they want to offer all components under their brand.

They just need to add some hackability, so that people who don't like this kind of system would still buy it and say. Look they tried to screw with me make it unrepairable, but I was more clever and can still use it. Though that hackability feature should not be too obvious, nor too easy, but it also should not require too expensive tools. But i could be time consuming to fix it yourself. This way they can sell it to more people.
It's always so big pleasure when you can fix something and not spend much money. I adjusted my rear derailleur hanger with just an old bicycle rear axle, a light blank of wood and 3 wood screw. It was such joy, because I did not need any expensive tool to construct the tool too. Only screwdriver. At first I thought I need a drill press or at least hand drill to make a hole to blank to put the axle through of it. But then I had idea, that I can just use 3 screws to screw the axle on plank and then it can rotate with the axle between screw heads. It's even better, because I can tighten and loosen the screws with tapered heads and remove the slack and also adjust the axle to right angle with blank. These things, are that make me happy, not the mass produced consumer products that you pay a lot of money and then you are just consumer like everyone else.
Also last summer I built wheels for my bike. And then too I used homemade, dishing tool and improvised truing stands. And I spent only maybe less than 10€ for making those. I have video of building those wheels in my channel if someone want to see. I'm pretty proud of how I made the dishing tool. It's really cheap from scrap wood, but I think it's pretty handy to use.. although little big to store or handle.

I think at the end of the day, Sram and all the others strive to manufacture products at minimum cost to them For more profit. And market these new “throw away products” as a saving for the consumer . FYI I have this product coming in the post Monday… 😂😂😂😅

Single speed to the rescue 🤣. Plenty of old mechanical stuff out there that will go on for decades. Replacement parts? Plenty of enterprising individuals out there willing to supply an obvious demand. Don't buy in and it goes away, market should be consumer led. Another tail-wagging-the-dog scenario.
