  • Are you actively teaching your kids your worldview or are you leaving it up to their schools, peers, and pop culture? Connor Boyack, creator of the “Tuttle Twins” book series, believes that parents should take the transmission of civic and political values just as seriously as they do religious traditions. Connor doesn't shy away from terms like "brainwashing" and "propaganda," since some form of brainwashing is always impacting the minds of children. The only question is whose propaganda reaches them first and has the most impact.

We need to teach our children HOW to think, not WHAT to think.
Trouble is most, including schools, do not know how to think.

That's the trick when it comes to conservative values. By explaining individual rights and self-determination the failure of collectivism is revealed. Therein lies the how to think.

“I’m Charles Koch and I heartily approve this message. My personal favorite of Connor’s several hundred (actually only 44 or so) books is ‘The Tuttle Twins and the Road to Surfdom’ (ha ha). Connor knows well that kids totally are gullible and it’s never to soon to nudge them onto the right path, that of making the world safe for freedom-loving billionaires like me."

Augh, the religious indoctrination of children by their parents makes me feel sick. Teach them right from wrong, how to think for themselves, then when they’re old enough they can decide for themselves what to believe.

Just curious, on what do you base those values of right and wrong you propose they be taught? Where do you get your foundation from? Speaking only from Christian faith that is a path they must choose freely for themself one day. It can't be decided for them.

I've been pondering over this for quite some time.
      Here's a thought experiment.
Is it right as opposed to wrong to respect your parents? Is it right as opposed to wrong to respect a design? Is it right as opposed to wrong to respect a designer when a design is perceived?
BTW isn't "Teach them right from wrong, how to think for themselves," programming? and isn't "then when they’re old enough they can decide for themselves." simply a carrying out that programming?

@@gracechapel2464 excellent question and relates back well to the video. Early on, of course, kids must simply be told not to hurt others, tell lies, steal, etc. For me personally, and if I were doing a better job than I actually did, I would explain and show by example “here are the things I believe to be right and wrong based on human nature, my experience, and that of others”. Their experience will help them decide for themselves, as you’ve said. A lot of that is likely to overlap with Christian values and many have argued which is the true basis for morality. My belief is that if we are being honest with ourselves, morality is subjective, utilitarian (essential for humans living in groups), relative, and man-made. When kids are older we can (and do) talk about these and other weighty subjects.

@@kennorthunder2428 I think parents should be respected to the extent that they earn and deserve it, our job is to ensure that we do.
Teaching right from wrong could be called programming, definitely, though in my view “programming” suggests something near permanence. How or whether that programming is carried out can and probably should change over time and with knowledge and experience. Pretty difficult to get it right off the hop.
Respecting a design or designer I don’t quite understand, I’d like to hear more, but I think a design/designer deserves respect according to its fitness for purpose. A Swiss watch, great respect. The human body (evolved, not designed IMO), not so much. Helpless when young, multiple entryways for deadly pathogens, must eat and drink often to remain alive, unconscious and vulnerable a third of our lives, cannot withstand even a moderate fall or swings in temperature. If that’s a design, it’s not a very good one.

" Here are some foundational truths that I believe in "
