      but lets be frank. It was a shit film
      The vast majority of avenger films are boring and utterly predictable. They're the food equivalent of a deep fried mars bar. They're filled with fat, sugar and other processed foods, immensely bad for the brain.
      And Black Panther, the only thing that distinguishes it from the candy like Marvel films is its acknowledgement of the disgusting racism and hatred that black people face every day in the US. Though of course the antongist was ultimately punished, not because he wasn't right but rather your not allowed to use the very same violence that black and first peoples were subjected (the crimes, the rape and pillaging of hundreds of millions of people by white colonialism over the past several hundred years).
      But hey apparently they're gonna build some more basket ball courts for those inner city kids. That'll solve their problems

      There are only past movies that weren't necessarily brainwashing, or movies that talk about such brainwashing and barely exist nowadays if they still do at all and finally but not least there are entertainment...
      There is a social norm that the only movies you should like are the ones that everyone likes too. Otherwise, everyone dislikes those people who don't like what they are allowed to like, thus involuntarily allowing violence sprees like those from Clockwork Orange or from Irreversible. Now, Scorsese is too much likeable for me.

      Marvel, DC Comics, Lucasfilm , Streamig services is for me the main reason why cinema will be totality dead and baried for the 2 years to come. Cinema as we know it and love is dead. Directors now a days make /sell / write movie to sell popcorn, and guaranteed they livelihood for the next year. Cinema is to perturbe to think the main questions in life. If you watch a good movie you learn from it, as most as you experiencied the same things as the character. CINEMA IS DEAD.

Or if you don't like horror movies, you should watch Good Time by the Safdie brothers. Movies came to an end, and the swan song of classic Hollywood magicland was Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. Now it's all about cgi that looks like videogames, movies are trying to look like videogames so desperately is fucking ironic, cuz back in the day it was the other way around. This was art, now it's just an industry, and not a magic industry like before, no now it has gone full Skynet Hal9000 mode and movies will be less and less human, there might be a story to tell, maybe great performances but the visual soul will be empty, cold, lacking any sort of texture.

The short film Carne, I Stand Alone, Irreversible, Enter the Void, Love, Climax and Lux Eterna were phenomenal and I can’t wait to see Vortex (starring one of my other favorite directors!). That being said I can’t see him sitting down and watching a film like Black Panther or any other big budget effects driven superhero film without getting bored or desperately wanting to change the channel. It was going to be a guaranteed hit.... even if it was the worst movie ever made.
      It's a sad movie to me, because it exemplifies the inadequacies of African culture, by showing something that is never going to exist in real life Africa, but has existed already in other cultures.
      It pushed the narrative of blaming other people for lackluster industrial development.
      There are regions in Africa that are untouched by white colonialism.
      Those regions are about as primitive as one could imagine.
      The real wakanda is a straw Hut.
      This is why the movie is sad. This is why the movie is a cringe Fest.

    • @krellings
      @krellings 6 років тому +3

      Brett the fact that blaming "other" people for Africa's current state is what you got from the movie is very telling of the narrative you have subscribed to your whole life. It was a big budget "Hollywood" film meant to line the pockets of already super wealthy fat cats and it did just that. It also put an almost entirely black cast on the screen, something which before those same fat cats claimed would never work and also I suspect part of the reason you and others of your mindset cringed so much. Enjoy.

      im all for diversity, and it was an all black cast practically, so that's good, you can get into what other types of demographics it lacks etc etc but that's not the point, the point is that they used the race angle as a marketing tool. Its cynical, because it's different on a superficial level, skin: character's skin is different and the skin the cityscape has is different, but beyond that, the movie is as generic as marvel movies get, and when it tried to shove in some political commentary, it ends up favoring monarchies, which is a form of classism, a form of discrimination based on an arbitrary quality part of the population has, like racism, and it also favors american agents interfering and destabilizing a foreign government when this government threatens to destroy the way of life USA benefits from. So basically they just shoved in a political angle in order to market the movie using it, race etcetc, its all for money. That's, in part, why I think Noe says you can't learn anything from most modern movies, they really have nothing honest to say

As was done in the museum scene. If art of any kind doesn't do more than entertain, if it doesn't provoke thoughts to have a conversation then to me it's meaningless.

    • @15awesomehighfive
      @15awesomehighfive 6 років тому +6

      yeah, i get the colonisation angle the movie tries to play with, but the fact that then it has a white CIA agent sabotaging an african revolution with the help of our protagoinist and overthrowing a legitimate government just invalidates any kind of comment the movie tries to make (legitimate by the movie rules, which make no sense. Killmonger has a right to the throne why? The fact that he beats T'Challa doesn't count as a victory if T'Challa doesn't explicitly say " i yield"? So what if he just dies mid fight because of a blow to the head? There is no king? Also, i'm ignoring that monarchy isn't legitimate to begin with, but anyway. The walking dead girl has a whole scene saying how Killmonger is the rightful king whether they like it or not, and she has to be loyal, but when she really really doesn't like it she just gives no f*cks and decides to betray her king? what a character arc! I'm loyal to the king! well, not this one! The other one! The whole waterfall scenes are pointless if the former loyal family can kill the newly crowned king)

    Love Gaspar Noe and who gives a shit if he hated Black Panther? You know who also doesn't really care for Marvel and comic book movies in general? A good portion of the people who make and star in them. I grew up on comic books and the superhero genre and philosophically have nothing against them, but let's be real here, approximately 75% of why these things get made is because of money and not passion for the story or for the art of it. All filmmaking is a commercial enterprise in one way or another and I'm not saying that there isn't a passion for the story and for the art of filmmaking in those movies, but it is largely about IP and how it can be maximized with toys and video games and clothing, etc.
    Noe is just being real and he's not making a big deal of it. Who gives a fuck?

    • @jmnyc212
      @jmnyc212 6 років тому +1

      Vincent Dawn People get too attached and defensive over superhero fare for no reason. I've been reading comic books on and off since I was 5 which was 30 years ago. I learned to read well and understand narrative structures cause of comic books. I own over 1K DC and Marvel books (mostly DC) dating all the way back to the 80s.
      With that said I'd take an original film or a documentary over a superhero film anyday. I actually hadn't watched any MCU movie since The Avengers greatly disappointed me back in 2012.
      So about a month ago I tried keeping an open mind bt giving the last Thor movie a shot cause of the praise and I fast forwarded through it and "watched it" all within 15 min. The sad part is my friend that was there with me and had seen it at the cinema pretty much confirmed that my reading of it all in such a brief time (rogue asgardian warrior lady, Goldblum being overthrowed etc.) was correct. That's how predictable it has all become. You don't even have to engage with the movie to know what happens. In those cases what is the point?
      There are exceptions every now and then like Deadpool or Wonder Woman where I walked out surprised but for the most part this subgenre is beyond played. Superhero movies are stuck in a creative corner they can't seem to move out of.
      You can't even expect the same level of imagination and intuitive storytelling you still see in some mainstream published comics these days (Ie: Multiversity) with the movies. It' all safe with as little creative risk as possible.
      Naturally for a cinephile who is used to following an art form previously hailed for creative and innovative risk taking storytelling like film it's a chore to get jiggy with some shit like that.
      The only type of comic book adaptations that take those chances are based on niche and outlier type of books like the DC published Road to Perdition or A History of Violence about a decade back. But we don't even see non-superhero comics get optioned for adaptation in film like that anymore. Everybody wants a piece of the moldy superhero pie.

    • @Figs3
      @Figs3 6 років тому

      All superhero movies suck. I think the only good one was Watchmen. Cinema wise. But it's about the sort of escapeism. Long week, you go out with a girl or your friends and just go see a movie. For example people gather together and watch Sharknado to laugh at how bad it is because it's more about spending time with people. Do I think comic book movies are as bad? No but it's in that direction where it's about the night itself rather then the movie. Plus I feel like there's a difference between a movie and a film. For example, Transformers is a movie, while Garden State, Call me By Your Name, or The Godfather are films. They either change your mindset or just have an impact on you. But I'm getting side tracked here. I think Gaspar went into Black Panther with the eyes of a director, which if you go to a super hero movie for the cinema of it you will be INCREDIBLY disappointed.

    • @vincentdawn9689

      Your first two sentences kind of kill whatever it is you say after them. 1. I don't *hate* superhero movies, I just wish they didn't take up so much air in the marketplace and I don't get upset when other filmmakers slag them. Many of them are very well made and entertaining and some of them (like Nolan's Batman films) are even artful and intellectually engaging. 2. Watchmen is not a good movie. I haven't actively read comics since 2009, but I read Watchmen years before that and Zack Snyder's film is a visual xerox of Alan Moore's rather dense and impressive work but with absolutely *none* of its substance. There are at least two god awful performances from actors playing major characters in that film and virtually every change from the comic to the film harms the overall effectiveness of the adaptation. I saw it in theaters and had a miserable fucking time.

    • @Figs3
      @Figs3 6 років тому

      Vincent Dawn ok all Marvel movies suck. And we'll say difference of opinion. Because how you feel about Watchmen is how I feel about Marvel movies. Since I read the comics I'm busy hating it because that's how true it is to the original story. Now I didn't read Watchmen until after the movie. So it didn't affect my movie going experience. So to repeat what I said all of the negative emotions you feel about the Watchmen movies I have for Marvel and DC movies. So I actually agree with you or at least understand where you are coming from.

    As soon as I hear someone say “something isn’t cinema” I instantly assume they have NO idea what they are talking about. “Cinema” is about story telling. Whether bad or good stories, it’s still cinema. You have fantastical cinema mcu, and more grounded cinema, Nomadland. At the end of day it’s all cinema. Just displayed in different creative means and how the director wants to tell the story. So to say a movie telling a story “itsent cinema” is just outright stupid. . Not everything is for everyone, but don’t shit on something just because it’s not for you, respect the art. Because it’s all in the same boat. Just displayed differently.

      MCU ain't cinema. It's literal popcorn entrainment and merchandising advertising. Saying that anything in the MCU is cinema is an insult to cinema. There's nothing creative about black panther

    • @marcogianesello6083

      Yes and no. Yes, they are all movies, no they do not all have an intent that aims at fundamentally cinematic storytelling. A plot doesn't make cinema, a sense of visual literacy makes cinema, and the biggest problems of the average modern blockbuster is that they are competently made, yet have none of that which distinguishes cinema from other art forms

    I don't think this guy grasp the concept of just watching movies as a form of entertainment, instead sees other films as a potential source of inspiration or a point of reference.
    It is liberating to enjoy films for what it is and don't necessarily have to "take" anything from it.

    I may sound “butthurt” when I say this but the fact that he felt the need to say he hated the “r&b music” in Black Panther suggests to me something else because there was no true R&B music - it was a fusion of Hip-Hop and modern African music. But I’ll be reasonable and say that BP just wasn’t for him. It wasn’t made for him. It was made for Black people like myself who wanted to see ourselves represented positively in a mainstream superhero blockbuster. With respect to Mr. Noe, I don’t think the average moviegoer even knows who he is. I’m barely familiar with his work and I study Film. I only know one other person who knows who he is and that’s a cousin of mine who had to watch his movies for class. Do I think Black Panther is a perfect film? No, I do not. But to say the music made you “escape the cinema after 20 minutes” sounds very nit picky to me, especially when I’ve heard the score was one of the best parts of the film. Hell, it even won an Oscar for it. Just my two cents.

      I completely agree with you man. You’re TOTALLY right.
      I don’t understand why people have the need to hate on everything. Specifically Marvel. I love and know pretty well both worlds, comic book movies/pop culture as well as art cinema, as some people like to call it.
      I really don’t get why people have to diminish the value of a well done product just because it doesn’t align with their taste. If they actually invest the time to study, inform and appreciate the interconective narrative, character development, technology and many other contributions that Marvel movies (i.e.) have brought to the movie industry and zeitgeist, they would understand it’s very interesting and important impact.
      Of course you’re not obliged to like them but you could acknowledge its importance, influence and value. The good thing about Art is that it doesn’t have “rules”, it’s free. If you dare to set some, someone will certainly come and break them.
      You will obviously have your personal opinion, but you can’t force others to think the same. And it’s very sad for me (as a fan) seeing so many people hating on something subjectively good (as a fan again) just because it’s mainstream, cause I believe that’s the main reason why now everyone hates on Marvel, cause of the success and popularity, not the actual quality. I often wish that it would’ve stay as the small independent studio it once was (before Disney).
      I do enjoy Marvel movies and I do enjoy Gaspar Noe’s films. One does not exclude the other. And it applies to the entire industry. You’re a purist if you believe otherwise, it has already happened several times in art history. And that’s ok, but people don’t have to be pretentious 🤷🏻‍♂️
