- This is the bass line I played on the recording of the track that was featured on the 1986 OZZY "Ultimate Sin" album. I re-play the song for you and then discuss some of the techniques that I used in the sections.
You played on a hell of a record Phil, "Ultimate Sin" is my favorite Ozzy solo album!
The bass on secret loser is phenomenal, especially the re introduction after Randy’s drum solo just before the final verse. I’ve always been in awe of that section. I came across the song from the movie The Wraith.
As I’m not a rock fan I hope this speaks volumes.
Superbly played and thanks for the memories Phil!
God bless and best wishes.
You just got a subscriber, I wish more bassists would do this. Thanks so much Phil. I’m a big fan of your playing and love THE ULTIMATE SIN album. The detail you go into is amazing, especially when talking about the alternate vs. down picking differences you do in the same riff during the intro as opposed to the verse.
Thank you! Comments like this is why I am motivated to do these videos! I am glad that I can help or inspire and I am planning on posting more very soon! Rock on! Phil
Holy shit! why am I just seeing this now? What an AWESOME bass line, the bass solo in the live versions of the song is probably one of my favourites.
I love your tone on Ultimate Sin, live on 'The Tube' in 1984. Would love to see you re-create that here.
Congrats Mr Phil for co writing the hits from that album...true glam masterpieces
Phil, you have great dexterity and articulation in everything you play and write. I always knew it listening to your work over the years, but now being able to watch what you do, it makes it more clear! Love it man!!
Wow, thank you!
Youre a legend!
I’m so happy you’ve made a channel and are revisiting the songs on Ultimate Sin. Please do Killer of Giants, one of my favorites on the album. Or Shot in the Dark! Ever talk or meet with Jake in recent years? That was an amazing lineup in 86
Yes yes yes.
Thanks Phil! One of my favourite bass lines! I love The Ultimate Sin album and specially Secret Loser, you are one of my inspirations to play bass!
Your an awesome musician. Hell yeah!!!!!
Phil S and Bob Daisley are really two solid professionals and true gentlemen mistreated by the Oz-managenent....
Its all good my friend! ...water under the bridge a long time ago and I am very proud to have been involved in a wonderful and fantastic era of rock history!
Do you still keep in contact with them
Hey Phil I did a bass cover of this song on my channel...wish I could get your feedback on it....
Too bad they couldn’t hang together for a follow up album. Love the part where it’s bass and drums and he does that little descending thing before the vocals come in. 4:10
Always loved that part of the song as well. That section of the Secret Loser is one of the most memorable on the Ultimate Sin
Your videos are not only informative, but are actually quite relaxing to listen to.
The mighty Phil Soussan!
Thank you phil
Hey man..hello meet you in Michigan at the token lounge...great show...
Jake reunion please!!!
MADE ME APPRECIATE THIS SONG EVEN MORE!!! Awesome!
Just discovered this channel and it's like heaven!! Makes me appreciate your already well respected bass playing even more.
I know it will not probably happen but if you were to do this for the whole album that would be sooo good.
❤Thanks sir for knowledge that you bring to music, I've been playing Bass guitar since 2007 and really appreciate the professionalism you show. Ozzy has always put together top musicians to play his music. You are in my humble opinion a VERY good bass player. Thanks again!!
Phil, you 're a giant. You're one of our bassist's idols. We have been covering "Secret Loser" for more than a decade. Thank you for this wonderful and useful playthrough by the man himself! All the album (as well as every Ozzy's) features incredible basslines.
Great Album 🔥
My favourite track off US. Thank you phil, loved "The Tube" tracks also back in '86(?). Is great to see you at LIL shows now, i love them too! 😃
Fantastic!!
Didn’t you play the bass on momma I’m coming home. Absolutely love the into…
No, this one was played by Bob Daisley on fretless
I've just started watching you video's I'm a bassist I've played for around 30 year's i was wondering if you had a place to see the tab on your bass fills, i don't play professionally any more but just for my own entertainment
that was cool!
My favorite Ozzy album. Thank you Phil!
First tape I ever purchased was " Ultimate Sun" and "Secret Loser" was ultimately my favorite song. Thanks.
So precious... thank you for sharing
Just seeing this was the actual Phil Soussan, instant subscriber. But to go over Secret Loser, YES!!!
I love these, play along to your own song so we can see the artwork happen.
Do them all!!!!!!!!!!! Haha
This is the MOST beautiful bass line of all time.
Yeah! Hands down you are Amazing! \m/, thank you for this channel!
I subscribed. Great playing Phil. Thanks for taking the time out to show how to play the song the correct way. Take care man. 👍
Jake’s tone is badass.. great bass grooves as well.
I'm great fan ....Congratulations!
I love this track so much!!
Great inspiration in my playing thank you!
Ozzy's vocals on this album are ridiculously good! Excellent work man! All the playing is top shelf serious high level!!!
The dude on the picture on the wall looks like Zakk Wylde ?
Great bass line.
A great break from. Now you have me wanting to go back and listen to this and the entire album again. 🤘🏼
Great video, I'm searching for guitar videos to learn this song, but now I'm happy to learn the correct bass line too! Thanks :)
Awesome bass player and super guy!
Great bass playing
I also love last in line
I met you guys in Illinois once.
Shot In the Dark is awesome.
There has always been speculation that Bob Daisley wrote this album.
And that he was actually the studio bassist.
You clearly break that up with these videos.
Bob did write on all of the album (except for Shot) together with Jake and Ozzy. I played all the bass on the whole album.
@@PhilSoussanOfficial yes I've heard your version of Shot In the Dark it's a great song. Try some the songs that I uploaded this. I also read a bob interview this morning. He said he thought the album wasn't any good.
I strongly disagree. I love watching you do the bass lines. Do Killer Of Gaint or Never Know Why

@@Blackmountainthunder Well of course Bob is entitled to his opinion, that is his right. I have my criticisms of the record... I wish it had been produced with more diverse sounds on each track for example. I respect Bob greatly - he is a great player and a bassist of great influence to me. We are also friends and stay in touch! I will get to some more of these tracks - as soon as I have time! They do take a lot of set up 🙂 Thanks for watching!
Thank you Phil! This song was part of my playlist for my first summer job in the UK. I used the funds to buy my first electric guitar!
Wonderful!
The always Incomparable Phil Soussan! One of the Best Bass Players on the Planet! Great Time,Great Tone and enough complexity to his lines to push the Song but not step on it! The Ultimate Sin is the best Ozzy Album of all time!
Thank you Bob!
So positive player)
Awesome . Thank you
Greath bass line bro'
Great Bassline..... EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks....................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Espetacular!!!! ❤🤘
Awesome phil
@Phil Soussan could we get a video detailing the origin and the bass line for Shot in the Dark. It would be interesting to hear the backstory on this song. I also have a question of sorts. Do you happen to know why Shot in the Dark is 4:26 on the original 1986 release of The Ultimate Sin but was edited down to 4:15 in the 1995 remaster. I just wanted to hear about this track and seeing as you were it's primary author it would be interesting to hear your side of it.
I have no idea about why the time was edited down! Sometimes tracks have to be cut short to make them fit on a compilation, sometimes a "total time" specification has to be met - perhaps that is it?
The origin of the bassline...? there were a lot of influences at that time - things I was impressed by; one track was The Pump by Jeff Beck and I started messing around with that eights-feel thing. Fundamentally though, the song was not originated from the bassline but more from the chords against that line. I had been listening to a lot of jazz fusion and particularly Steve Khan and Al Jarreau. Al would often use those descending minor 7th chords against moving bass notes and I was doing that on my piano - the whole thing was written on piano! Cheers!
@@PhilSoussanOfficial I really appreciate the insight.
Humble LEGEND!! IM BLOW AWAY WITH THIS VIDEOS. I’m a Bass player who’s favorite guitarist is Jake E Lee. Now when I see PHIL playing the sounds a found how much I un appreciate I was. Soussan Rocks Big time. Thanks a lot. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤙🏼🇵🇷
I will try to do more of these.. :-)
Thanks
Tabs?
Hi Phil, wow these videos are amazing !!!, Would you mind sharing what brand and gauge pick you are using ?
I use Delrin 0.96 from Jim Dunlop
@@PhilSoussanOfficial Thanks for that , the shot in the dark play through was sooo cool, The double stops and hammer ons in the chorus are awesome man !!!! so good , even more fun to play now knowing that part \m/
I love your videos! Thanks for your time! I seen you in Atlanta at the Omni in 86 during the ultimate sin tour. One of my most rememberable concerts. Seats were on the side right where you played. First thought was this guy is amazing! Thanks for the memories!
This is one of my favorite Ozzy-Tracks... love it! Thanx :-]
as always great video Phil....que question....are currently using EB bass strings?.....thanks for your art!!
Thanks Sanson! I proudly play Rotosound strings - Swing Bass 66 !
Thank you Phil!! seemed odd to me on the eb web your picture...dunno you might want take a look Rotos rules!! Thanks again an please keep posting!!!!
@@Sanson101 EB? ... you mean Ernie Ball? I for sure am on their site because I have been endorsed by MusicMan basses for 22 years now and Ernie Ball own MusicMan! ...maybe that's it. I have never played EB strings though.
@@PhilSoussanOfficial thanks again Phil. yeah EB= Ernie Ball ..thats the reason though your pic appears in the string users section that is why i got cossed!..but now you cleared it out...thanks for being so kind with your fans!!!....
"Shot in the Dark." Please?
Great second track, i like it very much, amazing bass lines...
This song was great in the movie the wraith.
Eres una leyenda del metal no entiendo como es que no tienes los miles de subs que te mereces
Thank you for the lesson Phil.
Like 🤘🇧🇷👽
Congrats for explaining so clearly, and for showing how broad a bassist may think!
Glad it was helpful!
Outstanding bass lines by Phil, as usual.
glad to see ya comin round
Great bass lines
Did you talk bass with Cliff Burton on tour ?
Good question!
Is that a Peavey Bass it looks like my peavey
No Mike - it is not! It is actually a Fernandes PBass from the early 90s. It is a great instrument!
Phil, I have a major question. What tuning is the song the Ultimate Sin in? I know shot in the dark is tuned with bottom 2 strings up a step and the rest are normal eb tuning. But I have saw people say the ultimate sin is in drop d flat. I didn't know if it was e flat or drop d flat. If you could, please let me know.
Hi Logan - thank you for the question! The Ultimate Sin was recorded in "Dropped D" tuning but as we were already down a half step I guess that would be Dropped C#"? Either way I would refer to it as "Dropped Db" tuning. On the bass that would be Db-Ab-Db-Gb. Enjoy!! Phil
@@PhilSoussanOfficial thank you very much, Phil! I appreciate it! Keep up the great work!!
Fantastic work. Thanks 😊
Please, please, please do a video for "The Ultimate Sin". My children will sing songs of your greatness in our village.
Done!
I cannot thank you enough for doing that. Unfortunately, when I go to watch it it tells me that it’s blocked due to copyright material. How can I see this video?
@@jobe13 It is automatically blocked because the algorithm identifies it as belonging to Sony Music. I have disputed the claim under fair use and it will be most likely lifted within a few days. This always happens and is very frustrating!
Phil Soussan you are doing the Lord’s work, sir!!
