      A legend, and always opening his videos with a nice, sincere smily "Hi!" Hehe, must have been filmed in the same time than the uktimate sin bassline video, he mentionned having made the experience of growing a "covid 19 beard" :) but he also said it itched, and he was already overweighing how long it'd stay on

    I saw you play this in Belfast in '86 and immediately it was apparent how much more there was going on in the bass part than was obvious on the album.

    I'm a terrible bassist of many years. I learned a LOT from this video. Thank you very much.
    With bass, in particular, but instruments in general, relative to writing popish tracks, I find it is best to keep it simple, which is hard for people like me, but keep it simple at all costs, and use little tricks, or gimmicks, or flourishes, to spice up the simple focused movement of the instrument in the song.
    If every instrument in the song is on MAX all the time, there is no contrast, no change, and it sounds like a jumbled mess. Way better to have an arrangement that is way too simple, like embarrassingly simple, like naked empty, AND then add the little spices/flourishes on each instrument at the appropriate moment in the song. That doesn't mean do all the flourishes on all of the instruments at the same time, you've got to arrange them, like maybe vocal and bass increase their complexity as the song moves into the pre-chorus, and then into the chorus the guitars and drums do their flourishes, or little special moves. And the same holds true within sections of the song, not just on transitions, but each instrument can flourish at its own moment in the section to keep the section moving.
    Whole idea with music, and this is the hard part, it gets down to the very core of what music is, or what frequency is, at any fixed moment in time, there can be no frequency. Frequency exists in the time domain. So, the really hard thing at the core of writing music is to keep the song the same all the way through, but always changing. It is a contradiction in terms, but it is what makes music music. I mean, you can have a four piece band, and each instrument just plays lead, like there is no repetition, no themes, no motifs, just constant progression... and what to you get? An unlistenable mess. Well, I might like it, but me and a guy in Denmark are probably the only two guys on the planet who'd like it.
    So, a song should always stay the same, but be constantly changing, and you can do this by writing a basic chordal progression that repeats, with each instrument playing simple parts, but then little augmentations sprinkled around the parts, and in transitions, some coordinated flourishes on some instruments to change the energy level, either up or down into the new section, that is the same as the last section, just a little different, and at a different energy or tension level. Lol, sounds so simple, but its the hardest thing in the world to do well, so it actually works, so the music actually picks up and moves the listener throughout the song. So hard.
    This simple but hugely effective concept is fantastically demonstrated here. So, thanks, again, I learned a lot!

    Fantastic run through. I'm not a bass player so I hadn't realised how much phil had put into this. I saw Phil with Ozzy on the Ultimate sin tour and the band were red hot. I also saw him prior to that with Robin George. It would be interesting to hear his take on Robin's Showdown as live that always had a stonking bassline. Edit: I enjoyed this so much I bought a bass!!! 😁

    I saw you with Ozzy in ‘86 in New Jersey. Didn’t know you were British. Shot in the Dark was Ozzy’s “pop song” all over the radio at the time, but underneath that pop melody was some mean ol’ thunder bass and Jake’s roaring guitar riffs. Me and my band mates at the time dissected the whole Ultimate Sin album, the bass, drums, guitar, and Oz’s vocals and declared it a masterpiece. Thanks for sharing this insight into a classic!!

    Wow! Sir! I know this is an old vid.
    I was JUST thinking of you, this great bass line last night! Out with my (now) 17 year old daughter on her birthday and she was playing some of her music from her phone connected to my car’s system and Shot in the Dark came on. Haven’t heard it in a few years.
    Told her it was my fave from this album and how much I loved the bass line. (I’m 49. Been playing bass on and off since age 15.).
    Even told her about the Ultimate Sin live video and how I thought it interesting how you swayed back and forth so much and wondered to her out loud that it may have been something you did to keep the overall feel, etc. heheh
    Now….out of nowhere, this vid pops up on my recommended on UA-cam tonight!
    I’m SO very happy right now!
    Thank you for sharing! It’s much appreciated!
    Love and light to you and yours this Season! 🙂

    Great stuff. I played this ina band about 12 years ago. It definitely opened my eyes to a new style of fill and runs in a pop song. Some of your later "phils' are very reminiscence of Bob Dailey's style on a few tracks from Ozzy's first 3 albums which makes me very a happy bassist.
    Both you and Bob and Zep's JPJ are all major factors in my personal style. Lots of meaty grooves with a tasty side salad of snappy fills.
    I will say, to your credit, the first Beggars and Thieves album was a huge inspiration on my playing. I actually learned that album right after buying my first Spector in the fall of '90. Super melodic and well written across the board.
    I loved watching this to see the variations you can do on a song. I found myself playing most of it similar to yours, but added a few smaller parts in the lower register on the higher strings.
    Did I earn my diploma? 🤘😎🎸

    • @PhilSoussanOfficial
      @PhilSoussanOfficial  2 роки тому +5

      Hey Johnny! Thanks so much for your comments! Indeed, JPJ was a very big influence on me! I always try to keep my playing with respect to those that came before me so that is what I did with Ozzy too, naturally I admire Bob's playing very much and have liked his playing in all the bands in which he has been!
      Indeed some sad clown wrote here sometime earlier that I did not play it as well as Bob did?!! ...LOL!!
      The B&T album remains one that I am very proud of and I am glad you brought it up - for that alone you get a diploma!

    • @johneedshea9210
      @johneedshea9210 2 роки тому

      @@PhilSoussanOfficial some people's kids. Ugh! I just moved home from Hollywood a few months prior to when when I picked up the B&T album. I was trying to reinvent my playing to be a bit more blues/groove/Badlands-ish stuff. When I found out you were playing on it, I jumped at it and it's one of my 10 albums if I get stranded on an island to be stuck with. The best thing is, the inspiration worked. It got me out of this bad hyper bass thing I got wrapped up in with this guitarist I was playing with. I wanted to slow it down. Smell the groovy roses. Haha!
      Thanks for the past 32 years of influences -and another 4 years before that for The Ultimate Sin. Lightning Strikes blew my mind in '86.

    I *_LOVE_* playing this song on my guitar. I play a guitar with a whammy bar and a locking nut, so I had to figure out how to do it without tuning the E and A strings up a whole step (from the normal tuning 1/2 step flat), so that took me a minute. I also figured out a "rhythm" guitar part with some alternate chord voicings for some of the riffs and a clean part that sounds as much like the clean parts on the Ozzy track as I can get with the way some of the guitars are buried in the mix. I sure would love to get to hear the original "stem" tracks that made up the final mix. Anyway, lots and lots of fun to play. And lately I've been starting to try to figure a bass line, but now I don't have to go to the trouble, the man himself showed how! What a great time to be a rock musician with all this great info available.
    Great video, great lesson. Thanks.

      Very few people play the clean part correctly!

      @@PhilSoussanOfficial Oh, I make no claims to correctness. I just get as close as I can with something that doesn't sound _too_ wrong. 🙂

    Thank you ! I am in Ozzlands the Ozzy / Badlands Tribute and we do Jake era Ozzy as well as Badlands . This helped me amp up my interpretation of your bass to actually play it properly.
