I am therefore claiming fair use to teach students the parts of these songs.
Awesome, Phil. Ultimate Sin is my absolutely favorite Ozzy album (unpopular as that opinion may be!). This band just DESTROYS.
You know people are starting to send me notes saying how much they appreciate that album after all this time!
Hi Phil. It has always bothered me that the Ozzy camp didn't and probably still doesn't give you and Jake the credit I feel you both deserve on making what I consider to be the best album of Ozzy's career. Not to mention Ozzy's best lineup of musicians to boot. I know it doesn't matter now, 30 odd yrs later, but I personally want to thank you for being a part of an album that changed my life in a way that no other album has ever done before or since "Ultimate Sin". Thank you again, and best wishes on all your future projects. Your "Ultimate Fan".. Muzzie0323(Scott)
Hey Scott, thanks for writing and for your comment! I thank you for the compliment and am glad that you like that album - it is very easy for people to poo-poo that album for whatever reason but the success of it jump started Ozzy's flailing career at that time and sent him onwards and upwards into the stratosphere - the rest is history and that is, at the end of the day, inarguable. I think it was a great album and it represented a fantastic period in my life and memory, with my friends Randy and Jake. Even though I have read strange things since, we were a good group and close friends during the ensuing tour. No regrets - I loved that time, but was also happy to move on to diversify my career and trust my instincts ! Thanks again for your kind words!
@@PhilSoussanOfficial tipping my hat off to your humble comment!! 👍👍✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️
I love the album too. Was one of the first I bought. Nice to see the bassist behind it and others. Thanks tons.
There's a reason Jake E Lee played (and wrote some of) Ozzy's two highest-selling albums -
and Mr. Soussan demonstrates why those two albums have such a groove to them, too.
The chorus bassline and the fill leading into it is basically the greatest thing ever.
YES!!!!!!!!!!
Found this channel just as of today, so great, I'm a fan since Ultimate Sin, Phill has a unique style, he uses pedal notes just like no one, never boring, always with a twist!
\m/
Dude nice token shirt! I totally seen you there with the Last In Line! 🤘
Your Sound is So Gold In The Ultimate Sin Album🐐🎸#GOAT
Really appreciate this Phil - some great songs on that record!
F UA-cam & their censorship! Thanks Phil! One of my all time favorite albums! God bless!
Ha! Thank you John!
The bass work on this whole record stands out as one of my favorites. The root ride into a stroll of groove fantastic stuff!
One of my favorite albums if not my favorite album of all time. Ultimate sin is truly underrated.
That is a terrific compliment - Thank you !
Phil, You are very nice guy. Thanx for Ultimate Sin. Good job man, really good job. Greetings from Poland. Take care🎸🤘
Awesome Phil!! My all time fav album..great seeing you playing this live those many years ago! Truly hope you can show more from this album!!
At some point I will - please stay tuned!
Thank you Phil 👍Could i requst the fretless intro to killer of giants please? When played live you were so clear in the mix. It works so well.
I will put it on the list!
Incredible! Thank you so much for this Phil!
Hi Phil…..loved this album …..loved what youse guys did on it…..This tour was my first concert….it was at the Hirsch coliseum………..You and Jake killed man….thank you for helping make some great memories
I love this whole album and your playing is great throughout, thanks for sharing. I always felt this bassline had more going on then was first apparent.
Thanks for listening MarK!
@@PhilSoussanOfficial No problem at all, hope you can do a few more of your cool lines like Never know why or Fool like you" both awesome as well.
I knew the tuning was "drop something" before 5 string bass guitars became common currency... and that octave double stop with the higher note being subtle seems simple, yet gives another dimension to the sound/song/riff...
Holy shit, Phil, I recognized him immediately. Very cool to see you.
Thanks a lot for doing this.
Thank you for posting your bass line and your contribution on Ultimate Sin. Very interesting to see!
You have been my top bass player since THE ULTIMATE SIN album was released.
I tried to copy bass line you played in it.
I'm so glad to find your channel!!
I hope you upload more THE ULTIMATE SIN songs~! Stay healthy Phil.
Thanks for watching! I am planning on starting to post more content here so thank you also for subscribing! Phil
This is so awesome to watch. Love your work sir. None of the old clips ever showed what you were up to in this amazing track.
Man thats killer. Awesome fills Phil!!! Grew up with this record!
One of my favorite ozzy tunes and you killed it bro! I love the bass run before the chorus!
Amazing bass lines. You are one of the best Ozzy's bass players and a great bass player with an incredible sense of rhythm.
Great! I've always enjoyed the Ultimate Sin album in Ozzy's collection, I never understood why it didn't get as much attention as the others. "Never" is such an awesome rockin' track, my favorite! Ultimate Sin also has the best cover art of all of Ozzy's albums 😂.
...although it is starting to get a lot of credit these days as people re-discover the album !
I am sure it sold a ton of copies then. Streaming helps again... And CDs still sound fantastic....
Hey Phil, new sub here and big fan, anyone who poo poo’s that record is a fool. That’s the best record he’s done. The bass line is perfect. Thank you for this!
Many people are starting to rediscover the record. It really is a great album even if I say it myself; I forgot how much I enjoyed playing the material!
We saw you in US Kansas city,MO YOU ROCKED OUR WORLD thank you for all your hard work WE LOVE YOU BRO keep it up see you soon hopefully LOL
Fantastic! Thank you!
Thanks again for sharing. Huge sound at that time in the 80’s!! I agree with your comment on hearing the entire song from just the bass line. That’s what makes this album sound so large. Look forward to catching the upcoming Last in Line tour.
Thank you Gary! I appreciate you leaving a nice comment and hope to see you out on the road somewhere !
@@PhilSoussanOfficial You’re welcome. Thanks for the memories. Keep Rockin!!
Nobody can rock that song like you do! Grettings from Tijuana, Mexico!! Love that album, specially this song. You really made a great job back then.
Thank you Zeppelino - I take that as a great compliment!!
What a great channel..So awesome!! Outstanding bass playing ...
THIS IS SO INCREDIBLE!!!!!! Thank you!
I am absolutely delighted
So I was playing the intro an octave higher on C# 4th fret A string back when I tried learning this. Does sound much more solid tuned down with the double stop. Thanks again for another great video, Phil.
Thank you Phil. I have always loved your playing. This defiantly is eye opening about how you put it together.
Hi Kreig, I am glad that you find this interesting! I do things pretty instinctively but am always happy to share! Stay well, Phil
Wow this is incredible!!!!
Happy I finally discovered these!
That was killer, one of the best hard rock songs ever written. Thanks for breaking it down like that Phil! Nice to see you playing great, and looking great these days. Cheers bro
I am in Ozzlands , Ozzy / Badlands Tribute. Thanks for this video. I am learning this song for set 2.
How very apt that he's wearing a Token Lounge T-Shirt and I saw him and Last In Line at the Token Lounge last month.
The Ultimate Sin is my favorite album, slightly edging out the Randy material, as sacriledgous as it a lot of Ozzy fans might think that is. Anything that peels back the onion as to how these great songs were made is all right in my eyes. I remember buying the songbook back in the late 80s in order to learn the music, to only realize over the years the transcription was horribly incorrect.
You are a great musician and a better human, Phil. Thank you for doing this.
What a pleasure and privilege to listen to this Phil! Thank you for all the great music over the years!!!
Wish you would do a video on the bass tuning and playing on every track of the ultimate sin.
Your playing on that album with the low tuning and randy castillos drumming gives that album such power.
Please need a video on every track.
Great job Phil.......Thanks.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic video, thank you. I’ve been playing this song for years in my Ozzy tribute band. I thought I had the bass line nailed until I watched this. So many subtle little touches that I’d missed. Awesome baseline, awesome bass player. Thanks again.
Thanks Phil for helping create one of the greatest albums of all time. Truly a masterpiece. Amazing!
What a class Phil! Delighted for this great opportunity! Please give us some tips on playing shot in the dark.
Come on Phil post more on your channel really enjoyed the video dude
Haha! Thank you Navind! Please stay tuned - I am talking with an instrument company about doing more videos such as this in collaboration. Stay tuned my friend and thank you for the nice compliment! Phil
@@PhilSoussanOfficial you to dude
Just noticed the Blackstar mini amp. I have a double one, great for playing in my living room!! Little thing litteraly burns a hole in the wall!
How did I not know about this? These videos are awesome!
Yeah, just stumbled on this yesturday myself
Amazing Phil! Do “Never Know Why”! We love these!! Thank you!
I watched your video once again without any musical distractions. You explain everything regarding your technique so well,You wrist and picking technique are superb you make it look so easily and without effort, great sound ,great attack, great fretting technique,so as an intermediate type bassist, this is were i wanna be in regard to your seemingly effortless fluid playing, ok the Scots lefty bassisit is still very critical of himself but l,'m. Def gonna hang around in your masterclass!❤
muy bueno!!!!! gracias genio!!!! saludos desde argentina!!!
love your bass playing, I listen to full uts album while spraying grass.
How neat, thanks for sharing, you are a wealth of knowledge and talent! Knowledge that you can stand on!
Thanks Ian... hoping to post more of these vids soon! Phil
God I love this albulm one of the reasons why I got into playing bass, I love the sound in this song, your a great inspiration
good !!!!
Sounding awesome Phil! I'd love to hear you talk about/ perhaps a little demo on Bass lines from Last in Line songs. Particularly False Flag, the intro to that is just killer!
Hannah - it is going on my to do list! Thank you !!
Amazing lesson!!! Thanks Phil. Maken a vid with the Wal!!!! Please....
thanks phil ima bassist too , i like ur style....an hispiration for my self
Great video Phil!! And now I've got this song stuck in my head, and that's perfectly fine with me...thanks for sharing!
Haha! Nice one Clay! I will be posting more - in the process of planning new vids with a new guitar company. Glad you enjoyed my friend.
Phil
@@PhilSoussanOfficial great to hear that you are keeping busy until the world sorts itself out and we can once again see our favorite bands live. Also good to see this particular album being given some love, as it is neglected gem. On a personal note, this video inspired me to pick up my basses and run through some tracks that I haven’t played for years. I realized that I had been playing the same songs quite frequently and needed to expand my horizons a little. Be well and stay safe, and hopefully I’ll see you at an LIL show when the world is back in business!
@@claywhitehead8176 Awesome! Keep playing Clay - it is the only thing that makes me feel sane!!
Could we get a bass tutorial on Shot in the Dark?
Hey Mr.Soussan tech us how to paly it. Very nice.
That is one of the planned future tracks!
Good stuff. Pro’s pro.
I've never heard playing high up on the neck referred to as the "British sound" before . . . very interesting!
Tony Iommi was known to play the higher frets on the lower strings, for example.
So cool 🙏🙏🙏
Hey Phil. I met you guys in the Ultimate Sin Tour in 86, I believe. This was Charlotte NC BTW!! .. I wanted to say Thank you for these videos. I absolutely love them. I have one little request if I may. I listen to UA-cam on either my TV with a soundboard for that stereo emulation or on my desktop with Studio speakers. I have trouble hearing YOUR actual playing though. I only hear the band and your picking. The bass isn't coming through for me. Maybe it's just me? But I was wondering 🤔 in future videos if you could be a little louder and turn the band and Ozzy down just a tad? Please 🙏 ! I want to hear all the little things you put into it. You are suck a talented Bassist and all around musician!!! And😮 Thank you again for the uploads!!!
Phil, would you be able to do a masterclass for Lightning Strikes? I am especially curious about what you did at " My backs to the wall" with your right hand.Cheers.
Nice shirt......apparently youve been to my neighborhood!
The 80’s were kick ass
I like these videos for a lot of reasons. One, the production on the album didn't do him a lot of favors. Cool to see the parts highlighted with his commentary. And it reminds me - not that I need it - how good of an album this is.
Thank you! Everything is all in the details!
Great lesson Phil. Do you like Jake E Lee? I noticed you "Never" said his name. Jake in interviews said you guys didn't get along so well. Why don't you and Jake play together? I spoke with Tony Franklin from the Firm and Blue Murder. He's a very nice bass player. What about a lesson on Never or Fool like you? Anyways the Ultimate Sin was a great Album in my opinion. Thanks for your time. Take care man. Great playing.
Not at all! I liked Jake a lot, he was a tremendous guitarist, I even roomed with him and together we had a great success. Jake is however generally a very quiet person who keeps to himself. I have heard that he has said stuff like that, but I didn't see that at the time. Ozzy's band is really only about Ozzy and we were only hired there to do our best job. When Jake left none of us really saw or heard from him again. Sadly my dear friend Randy passed in 2002 :-(
Thank you Phil for these lessons. I’m drummer and I learned a lot of stuff seeing the ultimate sin vhs. I remember every song and chord from that video. Great bass intro after randy solo. Miss Randy a lot he was like my first “teacher”. I saw some years ago some footage of you randy and ray gillen from maybe 1993 before ray’s death. Ray was also a temendous vocalist. Thank you for the video.
Hi Phil, I'm your fan and loved your work in The Ultimate Sin, I hope that someday Ozzy decide to remaster the album, it could be great, it's so hard to find it nowadays, I hope you can read my comment 1 year later, I love you, cheers from Mexico!!, if you play a show here, surely I will go
Thank you Jorge! I hope they do remaster it! Look forward to seeing you in Mexico !
@@PhilSoussanOfficial you made my night, thanks for all!! You're the best, thanks for reply me 👍🏽
Such a wonderful album. Great songwriting and performances and the production didn’t suffer from the reverb wash that Bark at the Moon had, which made it hard to heard details now and then. If the album suffers in common memory, it’s all due to Ozzy’s short hair and stage clothes that tour. 😂
Love your playing, I saw you on that tour and last year with Last IN Line ( which is the coolest band ) Do you ever talk to Jake ?
Thank you so much! We have a great time in LIL and can't wait to get back to playing. Unfortunately I have not heard from Jake since the day he left Ozzy- none of us did. He disappeared for a while but then resurfaced recently. Phil
If you ever take questions, Jake was another of my favorite guitar players(teachers..I learned a great deal of guitar from him as i burned through my cassettes.. rewind/ play).
What was it like to play/ write with him?
Just picked up my first bass, a Fender Aerodyne. I tuned it down to learn this song....holy cow what a growl out of it! That low E string sounds like an earthquake. Can't imagine how hard it was to keep a steady, consistent, level when recording it...lol.
control! - it takes practice to drive the car rather than let the car drive you!
@@PhilSoussanOfficial Having the time of my life learning a new instrument though! A lot of fun.
Thank you.. Great Video. .Im wondering HOW DO YOU record VIDEO and BASS. Do you have to POST EDIT The two together ? If so what Video Edit platform can be used?
Thank you
Hey Kirk, I use a couple of digital cameras and then a Zoom H6 to record all the different audio (backing track, bass amp and my voice). After all that I import into FCPx, sync all files and then do a quick edit and then export to MP4. If you were only using one digital camera you could mix all your audio through a mixer and then send it to your "audio in" jack on the camera. Hope this helps.
@@PhilSoussanOfficial Thank you so much... That helps so much.. Great Idea on the mixer too.. Have a fantastic week!
Was this song along with the tuning already written for you to play, or were you part of the writing/ concept of utilizing this particular tuning?
The song was already written although I came up with my bass part. Regarding the tuning - that is usually dictated by needing to play a particular note - in this case I wanted the Db (C#) to be played lower than the regular low "E" on the bottom string in standard tuning. Thanks for the question! Phil
Phil Soussan Thank you for taking the time to answer.
The low tuning gives that album such a extra thump
Phil's bass playing on the album gives it some awesome energy
Do killer of giants!
awesome thanks for putting this up. Is that a Zakk picture on the wall?
Yes it is! It was a gift that Zakk signed for me.
@@PhilSoussanOfficial Very nice. I guess you played with him or were you more in Jake E Lee's timeframe with Ozzy? What you playing through there by the way... are you into the modelers, Kempers and what not?
@@HiredGoonage When I joined the band Jake was the guitar player. When he left, it was up to Randy Castillo and I to find a new guitar player - we found Zakk. I played with him for almost a year before I left the band to play with Billy Idol. I do not use modeling amps - less is more... Ampeg!
I was sure that was Charles Manson! Relieved it’s Zack !
There's a hint of Whitesnake's "Don't Break My Heart Again" about this bass part.
What basses did you use on the ultimate album? I also highly recommend, Phil's solo album 'Vibrate' as it's wonderful!
Thanks Brian! ... I ended up using a Yamaha BB3000 on the album
Was the whole album tune to a drop tuning?. Or drop D at half a step down? I remember trying to learn this as a kid before UA-cam, and I was probably about 12 when I started playing, and I could not figure out the note that you guys were using. I had used drop D of course learning Motley Crue stuff. Because that was their standard tuning. Man, it's a shame what happened to that band. They were huge back in the 80s compared to it; they were so many peoples number one band. You should have given Nikki bass lessons, too. 😆 😅
Also who was your favorite drummer to play with you have played with a lot of monster hitters 👍
Good question Brian! I learned a lot about "grooves and pockets" from my time with Simon Kirke, but my favorites have been obviously, Randy Castillo RIP, Vik Foxx (with Vince Neil - a VERY underrated drummer) but also Gregg Bissonette (with Steve Lukather), Simon Phillips, and needless to say Vinny Appice who I love playing with today!
@@PhilSoussanOfficial Vinny is a snare drum destroyer thanks for the infoe 👍
I think I already asked you this, Phil, but was the guitar also tuned down to drop C#?
The guitar was also tuned to drop C#, that gives it the song's heavy sound.
@@Insill that's what I thought as well. I always played it in Drop C#.
A quick queston Phil: I know that apart from Shot in The Dark, the songs were written with Bob Daisley. I'm interested if you "only" played what Bob wrote for the basslines, or you were allowed to change things to your taste? Thanks for the answer!
Indeed! Good question! Bob did co-write all the rest of that album. Bob's writing included most of the lyrics as well as his contributions to the music. In my opinion, Bob has been a great lyricist for Ozzy! I am not sure exactly the specifics of the music writing as to Bob, Jake or Ozzy, but when I came into the band the basic songs had been written. We got into many days of playing during which we each came up with our own parts. Of course I followed the general framework of the songs but I (and Randy) were allowed our interpretation of those without restriction. In essence, we had to play with each other, and that would require us to adapt our parts around each others musical styles!
@@PhilSoussanOfficial Thanks for the answer! I hope you will do more of these. If you can deal with the copyright nonsense.
Did Ozzy write the bass line too?
Now that's funny!
On piano!
lol
@@velosouk you forgot to mention using one finger (I think that was said in an interview once lol)
@@themadmattster9647 lol
Well as a bassist with one bass, who's glass is always half empty ,as in bass technique!,de-tuning strings ??? I am familiar with only as a technique the same with dbl stop notes,so i have kept to the basics ,now my step up is trying to replicate JJ burnel of the Stranglers whose melodic bass lines and speed im attempting at the moment, what i mean is your technique is very involved and for me would need broken down to further my musical understanding.Good stuff though ,ok i have heard of heavy metal detuning but never asked why?p.s. im a self taught Scotsman❤
A self taught Scottish bass player...? or a self taught Scotsman? LOL! Thank you for watching :-)
I wish they’d remix the album…. Get your bass and Jake’s guitar louder and bigger
..a LOT of things I would change about the production LOL!
The drums were all snare and real muddy on the toms and bass drum. Seemed like Nevison wanted the same exact sheen as the 1985 Heart album. I get it but …
Apps can do that... Remove and change drum tracks, modify each instrument. There will be and already is, a market for it. Bit soulless, possibly. Add the St Anger snare....
Do you and Ozz still stay in touch it must be hard with Sharon haha
In my opinion you were Ozzy’s best bassist
I agree with you, the second one of Ozzy is the Metallica's Trujillo. None of Ozzy's bassists couldn't reach the very heavy and nice job those ones, Soussan and Trujillo.
Hey Phil, is there any way I could DM you?
Cameo
cant even hear the bass :-(
1:36 he says it inspires different kinds of Phil's....,like himself 🤣😝👍...,.... I know......fills.....but my way is funnier
This album was no where as good as The Bark at the moon album. This was all very commercialized and definitely Jake E. Lee has turned to shit. I saw him in Atlanta few years back & he sucked.
Arthritis tends to help cause that.
@@brandondickie3456 it hasn’t affected Malmsteen or Lynch or EVH (R.I.P.) etc etc maybe the alcohol ….
@@FMJFerrari1 yeah maybe. He was definitely even better than amazing in the 80s/90s because his original whitey Strat he said was unplayable. Neck was too narrow but he made it work

I dunno - he disappeared for like 20 odd years.
