Replacing The Front Hub Assembly Wheel Bearing On A Lexus GS350 RC300 RC350 IS250 IS350

  • Our 2013 Lexus GS350 (4th generation) has provided us with 127,000 trouble free miles up until now. Lately when I have been driving the car I have noticed a groaning sound coming from the left front wheel, which tells me I have a wheel bearing on its way out. Honestly, I'm impressed that the original wheel bearings have lasted this long. The front driver side wheel bearing is usually the first to go since they are subjected to curb bashing the most (think drive through, toll both, etc). In this video I replace my worn wheel hub assembly with a new one from NSK. I recommend you purchase a quality wheel bearing because this is a job you don't want to do again anytime soon. This video should also be helpful for owners who have a GS300, RC250, RC350, IS250, and IS350 since all of these cars share the same hub assembly from my GS350.
    Below are the parts and tools that I used to complete the job. Your support is much appreciated!
    Note: In America the left side is the driver side and the right side is the passenger side.

    Thanks for the video Dan I appreciate the time taken to make these as always!
    Had to replace my wheel bearings on my 13 RWD GS at around 170k miles, she’s at 236k now and still going strong 💪
    Yes be careful of the ABS sensors and make sure to unplug them as I also lost one in the process and make sure to replace those nuts.

      Dang! You got 170k miles out of your original wheel bearings?! Nice! I'm curious how long the other three bearings will last? Nice job on completing the job yourself! IMO there is nothing more satisfying then completing a job like this yourself!
      Thanks and I really appreciate the support!

    I’d recommend anyone breaking that axle nut loose without an impact wrench to:
    1) jack up car
    2) remove wheel
    3) remove indentation on axle nut
    4) spray penetrating lubricant (acetone + ATF 50/50 works the best for the rust belt areas)
    5) remove center cap on said wheel
    6) reinstall wheel
    7) lower car
    8) apply parking brake
    9) use 32mm 12pt socket and appropriate breaker bar to break axle nut loose
    10) break lug nuts loose and continue to proceed as you were
    A little extra time is cheap. Differentials are not.
    Look into Acetone + ATF and have it in a metal oiling can. PBlaster is great but the homebrew is better.
    Be safe everyone.

      How many miles are on your GS?
      I have 115k miles and am starting to hear a noise similar to initial stages of wheel bearing failure. Seems awfully early considering my LS didn’t need wheel bearing replacement until >200k miles

    The two threaded holes opposite each other on the rotor take M8 bolts, just bolt them in evenly to remove the rotor.

      I know. I talk about the threaded holes in the rotors in my brake service videos. Sometimes it just more fun to use brute force, but feel free to use whatever method you deem necessary.

    Your videos have been useful to me working on my 3rd Gen Gs. With 170k miles on the Gs. Im experience oil burn. Im looking at upgrade to a 4th Gen. I wanted to ask if you experience same issue with your 4th gen. Oil consumption and little smoke on hard acceleration.

    • @DIYDanCars
      @DIYDanCars  8 місяців тому +1

      Hello Mikiedre, I appreciate the kind words and happy to help when I can. No, our GS350 doesn't drink a drop of oil between oil change intervals, but I also don't follow the recommended 10k mile drain interval set by Lexus. I change the oil in our car between 6500-7500 miles, which I think helps extend the life of the timing chain as well as other vital components. What kind of oil change interval have you been following with your 3rd gen? Every 10k miles or higher? Without doing a leak down test, it could be worn valve stem seals or a worn out engine (piston rings)? Sorry to hear about the oil consumption. That sucks! IMO 170k miles isn't a long service life, especially for a Lexus engine!

      @@DIYDanCars i got the car at 90k miles . Maybe the previous owners abused the enhine. I change oil at 5k . Sometimes sooner because. I lose about 1.5 quarts at each change . Thanks for your reply.

    Your goal is quarter million miles Dan? That is low even for a Camry let alone for a Lexus. 500K mile is my target for my Camry. My 99 Camry V6 has reached 271K miles.

    • @DIYDanCars
      @DIYDanCars  8 місяців тому +2

      Hi Gary, I hope you're right! We have never taken a car this high in terms of mileage so I don't know what to expect. I'm so used to German cars being completely worn out by 100k miles so this is new for us. I think we will play it by feel with this car once we get to 250k miles. If the car still feels great, then I think we will keep driving it, but if it ends up needing something major like a timing chain, transmission, etc., then we might part ways with it. Your post does inspire confidence that maybe 250k miles might be a low estimate. We will see! Thanks for the comment!

    Use a 3lb mallet and a alignment punch or a chisel and break the axle loose prior to pulling on the hub with a slide hammer. Shops do it with an air chisel.

    Hey man I just found your channel and im glad I did. I recently purchased a 2014 AWD GS350 with 88k miles. Everything about the car is perfect except 2 things and I was hoping you may have an idea and could help me figure what needs to be done. First, theres like a whining sound at higher rpms. Can be heard both inside and outside the cabin. Once im cruising on the highway the noise gets drowned out by either my heater or the road noise. I suspect the alternator but I dont have any electric issues or no battery light. The second issue is when I accelerate from a stop, between 2000 and 3000 rpms theres one solid thump thats very noticeable. I can replicate it easily when the car is in manual shift mode. In M1 between 2 and 3k rpms before even shifting to M2 I can hear it. That I suspect to be a motor mount. Its just one solid thump noise and it kind of jerks the car a little. Once the car is at cruising speeds everything is smooth. Please let me know if you have any insight on this. Thank you.

      Jaw style puller with the center pin/screw in the axel center would pull and break the trough the rust.
      Fresh wheel bearings are so satisfying. !
