I have seen several of these videos for maintenance on a GS350 & by far this is thee best made video I have seen yet. You also adding the link & written instructions to boot. Well done young man, well done.
Enjoyed the vid. FYI, in the TIS Repair Manual RM19E0U, the 2013 GS350 appears to have either the A760E (RWD) or A760H (AWD) transmission, the proper fluid temperature adjustment range is listed in the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID, ADJUSTMENT section for both models is: Data List: [A/T Oil Temperature 1] 49 to 53°C (120 to 127°F) I was monitoring in TechStream and curious about the delta, I'd estimate .5 to .75 quart came out between 102F and 120F, so if you followed the video and capped it at 102F, you are over filled based on the spec for the 2013 GS350. Also, if your plugs are check and drain plugs rusty, I was lucky to break free the check plug as the hexkey was very loose in all the rust, these are the part numbers on the A760H (not sure on the A760E), you can replace to help the next time. 90341-10011 Transmission drain plug (14mm socket, torque 29ft*lbf) 90341-10021 Transmission check plug (5mm hex, torque 15ft*lbf) 35178-30010 Transmission gasket (2X for both above) I got at the Toyota dealer, maybe it's cheaper there that what Lexus dealer markup might charge.
Interesting... I just checked again and my shop manual (online subscription) still has the temperature as what I have stated in this video. I have over 40k miles on my transmission fluid change and it still shifts smooth as butter.
Great job! I have a RWD LEXUS GS350 that I bought with 187k miles, so it's too late to change the fluid in my transmission. There's no record of it ever being changed and my car shifts perfectly so I'm going to leave it alone. If I would have bought the car new, or there was a record of the fluid being change, I would have changed it after 50k miles. And you are correct. There's no such thing as a life long fluid for us that keep our cars long term. Heck, even if you are going to change your vehicle after 100k, you should do the transmission service after 50k miles, but people listen to the nonsense of the dealers about lifetime fluids and 10k mile oil changes. I change my oil after 5k miles religiously. Subscribed.
Thanks! I have an 09 IS 350 with 120,000 miles. Not sure if the fluid was ever changed but I ended up changing the fluid and filter either way. I drove the car for a few miles then drained the pan again and changed fluid that way I can get close to a complete change. Noticed an intimidate difference! Transmission shifts perfectly
Beautiful, this works really well. I just performed this on my IS350 AWD 2011; has exactly the same transmission as yours. Haha, I got to clean off those metal shavings and change the transmission filter. I definitely notice my car feeling more powerful and alive the instant I step on the gas! Thank you!
@@AtmLifted 👋, No the shavings were wiped out and discarded. Process: drain the fluid, drop the transmission fluid pan, rinse and wipe away whatever shavings were in the pan and and pan magnets. While letting the transmission pan and magnets dry, change the filter. The last step is to refit the magnets in the pan and screw the dry pan back on the transmission with a new gasket. Re-add new Toyota WS fluid to check level.
@@hayden93 It's been awhile, so don't quote me on the exact amounts. A regular drain and fill was about 4 qrts. Taking the pan off off and cleaning it tallied the total to around 5-6 qrts removed. Remember that there is still remaining transmission fluid inside the transmission: IS350 (AWD): 10.5 qt. (10.0 L, 8.8 Imp. qt.)
@@curtisyang4965 thanks, my awd GS with the 6 speed had been slipping and I think it’s due to fluid level issue, and my overflow bolt is stripped and I had dropped the pan and replaced the filter and only got 3.8 qts out and someone had put the wrong filter on so I think the last person didn’t know what they were doing and I’m stuck dealing with it
I have a 2008 GS350 with 183,000 miles on it. As far as I know it’s never had a transmission fluid service. It was shifting pretty bad, slippage, hard up/down. I had read about people performing the ole ‘drain n fill’ on high mileage Lexus’ and it fixing their problems (despite Scotty Kilmer’s warning against it lol). I took the chance. Fluid that came out looked very dark. After the change, the car is shifting sooo much better now, it’s much ‘snappier’! It’s only Been a couple days so we’ll see how it holds out, but I’m happy. Just a few notes maybe someone will find useful: 1. The transmission took about 4.5-5 quarts of ATF - (I used Valvoline MaxLife which is cheaper than OEM and rated for my transmission.) 2. The overflow plug was a 5mm on the 2008 not 6mm. 3. There was a plastic cover concealing the fill plug which was held on by a single 10mm bolt. 4. There wasn’t any exhaust bracket in the way of the pan, just a plastic skid cover protecting the entire transmission. It was held on by four 10mm screws, one plastic 12mm nut and one 10mm nut. Hope that helps. Thanks for this video!!
Nice video. I recently replaced my transmission filter, o-ring, pan gasket and fluid...but I did three "drain and fills" first (driving 10 miles or so between each drain interval to mix old fluid left in torque converter) to remove the majority of old fluid and a final fill and level fluid check at correct temperature. If you're going to go through the hassle to remove the filter, etc...might as well get as MUCH of the old fluid out as possible first. If you replaced 6 qts...you have approx 3 qts still in your transmission with 60-70k miles on it.
Maybe a silly question, but did you replace the 6 qts three times? First time, then drive 10 miles, drain completely, refill with another 6 qts, drive 10 miles, drain completely, refill with another 6 qts, etc. ?
@@Mr-E.I know this is late but I believe a drain and fill only takes 3.4 quarts for each one. Doing this 3x replaces most of the old fluid which is good. Some mechanics even say doing 1 time every 50k/5 years is good enough. As long as you clean the pan and replace filter, the transmission should last a long time.
Thanks! Yep, I'm aware it won't change it all on the first drain and I mention that in this video, but do whatever you feel comfortable. I have had no transmission failures when I change the fluid every 60-70k miles in my vehicles so I will continue to go with what works with me.
I called Lexus dealer yesterday to get a quote on changing the transmission fluid on my 08 Lexus gs350 they said it’s a life time so no need to be changed , I was like “screw you” I’m getting it done somewhere else ,,, great video anyway and very knowledgeable and informative 👏🏼👍🏼👌
Hi Dan, thanks for the demo. I need to do this soon for my IS350. I'm planning on doing a simple drain and refill without dropping the pan. How much fluid do you think came out before you dropped the pan? I know it's been a long time, so I totally understand if you don't remember. Thanks!
Hello Dan! Thank you for the great video. I'm about to change fluid in my GS350. I noticed you provided a links to Toyota ATF WS fluid. But in the video I can see you are using Aisin fluid. AFAIK ther's slight difference between those two. Would you recommend using Aisin instead of Toyota? Thanks!
Already impressed and I don’t even have a Lexus. Red transmission fluid, replaceable filter, and not overly excessive amount of other parts required to access drain pan. All other manufacturers take note. They say lifetime but in reality they mean lifetime of the warranty. Does the infrared thermometer penetrate through the pan frame enough to get accurate fluid reading, or do you have to maybe say 105 instead of 102F to account for the difference between cold pan and warmed up fluid? I see the vacuum pump idea does the pump nozzle spray upward into the transmission body or at a 90 degree like I see with other vehicles? Approximately how much is the transmission fluid per bottle? Is this the 8 speed automatic or six? Good video and informative without extra “Fluff” that is used in a lot of Y/T videos because some narrators like to hear themselves speak instead of focusing on the subject? I would consider a GS for being able to remove and replace the filter and do a proper transmission service.
I have an RC350 awd has 62k miles on it. Am about to do this job but can’t find much info about awd model tranny. This video is the best. Thanks for sharing.
Great video and straight to the point 👌 Mine is 08 Lexus gs350 RWD and it never had any transmission oil change since, do you think it’s the right time to change it now? And also if you can recommend me a certified shop down here in California San Diego, since I live in apartment and can’t do it on my own ! Thanks in advance
Great video. I had to use an easy out to remove my check fill plug on my 18 IS300 AWD. I just replaced it with another OEM 14mm drain plug as it's the same threads.
@@DIYDanCars sorry I meant when you fill the transmission with new oil and you will get transmission oil to specified temperature then you need to drain excess, I saw your car was running but I'm not 100% sure Thanks!
@@adwokatdiabla7753 Yep, you got it. While the car is running you will fill the transmission with fluid until it reaches the desired temp. Once the fluid is at the desired temp there will be a slow trickle of fluid out of the bottom fill hole which will tell you its full. Reinstall the bottom bolt, tighten it, and then you are done.
If you are going to do this, you need to remove the fill plug, first. If you drained all that fluid and the bolt doesn't open, you're SOL unless you try to fill the same amount of fluid into the pan
Hey Dan, I bought my 2013 when it had 55k miles and now it’s at 135k miles. I did a drain and fill twice between the 80k. Do you think it’ll be ok if I went this route next time or would you suggest to do the drain and fill?
I have a Lexus 2014, model Es250. Unfortunately, I haven't changed the transmission oil, since I bought the car. The car is a single owner, and it currently has 180, 000 km.. The agency says that if they change the oil, they won't guarantee the transmission or the repairs. Some mechanics say that I can change the oil with no problems to the transmission, others say that it is a high risk. What can you recommend? Thanks!
@@DIYDanCars The shifting in the car is fine and I do not have any rough shifting. My friend advised me to remove half of the transmission fluid and refill with new then drive for 600 km then do the same thing. after doing this twice to drain all the fluid and add new fluid with a new filter. Do you think this is good idea? Have you done this in the past with good results
Hey Dan, I have a 2015 GS350 8-speed RWD 73k miles. I bought it used 3 months ago. I recently started noticing jerky upshifts only 1-2 and 2-3 when the engine is below operating temperature. Higher the acceleration more jerky it gets. Once the car is warm enough jerky shifts go away. Is it normal for this model? What can I do to fix it? Thoughts please.
Although annoying. This tends to be pretty normal within Toyota/Lexus transmissions. They hate being cold and feel pretty jerky until the warm up. Wouldn’t worry to much about it. (Just hit 100,000miles, six speed 2013 Lexus GS 350 here also does that) I would recommend changing the fluid if it has not been done yet. Keep your transmission happy!
Jerky shifts are never normal! I would recommend getting your car in for service and having them check the transmission fluid level. What makes me think this is related to fluid level is your statement about how it shifts fine once the car is warmed up. Transmission fluid expands as the temperature of the fluid rises, hence when the car is warm, there is more fluid in the pan vs when the car is cold. Best of luck!
I have a question I have a 2013 gs350 f sport. With 75k miles close to 76k miles and I bought it used at 65k miles. I checked Carfax to see if any transmission fluid replacement took place at a Lexus dealership or any shop but I don’t see it on carfax is their a way to check or should I change it what should I do. I don’t want to destroy my transmission.
I think you missed out on one very important part of your video and that is to reset the computer for those warning lights. Please make one with information that is so critical for a complete job. I liked your video and looking forward to seeing more in the future. Thank you
Hello Vince! What warning lights are you referring to? Because I have none! I don't know how I can illustrate resetting warning lights if my car doesn't have any. To be honest my days of making DIY videos have come to an end. Hi i have a Lexus gs 350 Awd 2007 it has been bit from the bumper, i changed the transmission fluid,it like it has 2 quarts of oil. It doesn't move when press the gas pedal either forward or reverse.what do you think
I bought a 2006 GS 300, with 91k miles with no transmission service since new, is it OK to do it? Car has not been abused and even well maintained. It is one-owner, I just think the former owner wasn't aware the transmission should be serviced like many people since manufacturers advertise their ATF as being lifetime.
Hey Dan, did you ever have any issues down the line after doing this trans fluid drain? I’m getting mixed answers on a forum about don’t touch it or whether to do a complete flush or not?
Hi, I have. 2014 gs350 awd with 105k on it if I was to do this would it be better to just do a flush and refill or should o remove the pan and scrub it and replace filter as well?
If it were me, I would perform the service exactly how I did it in this video. This is not a service that I recommend be performed by beginners, but if you can change a wheel bearing, suspension components, and the differential fluid, then you can probably perform this transmission fluid service. Hope this helps! Good luck!!!
Great video Dan. I have a 2009 Toyota Venza V6 AWD which has the same engine (2GR-FE) and transmission. I wish I have a lift like yours but my QuickJack will do, it raises the car 3 feet of the ground.
Wish you were my mechanic.....question: ran out of gas with ‘09 AWD GS350, filled the tank half way and it won’t turn over. I tried turning it on and off 3 or 4 times to let air out. Engine cranks but won’t turnover... any ideas? Prior to that, absolutely no major issues running
Hey man, have a (perchaps) stupid question: why would you have to check the fluid level if you replaced exactly what you had drained? Asking this as I don’t have the scanning tool.
That's not a stupid question at all. I see no problem with measuring the exact amount of fluid that you drained and then refilling it with the exact amount with new fluid. This process will be more tedious because you have to be absolutely certain that you get the exact amount back in. As long as you understand that, I would say go for it.
Dan I have a bad noice coming from the transfer case, initially though it was the front wheel hubs but actually the transfer case. A few trans guys said it a bad bearing. There is no way to change fluid in it though. Any way I can put gear oil in transmission without damage? Any recommendations? Everyone of the mechanics said it’s not worth changing labour too expensive not worth for a bearing. Have about 110 000 miles . Thanks in advance !
The transfer case and transmission share the same oil supply. If you change the transmission fluid then you are also changing the fluid for the transfer case. From what you said, it sounds like your transfer case is on its way out. If it were me, I would start looking for a good used transmission to replace the one you have.
Just subscribed to your channel. Appreciate the thorough instructions. Can you give me a few short instructions on how to replace the alternator on a lexus gs 350. Mine is a 2013 with awd.
Lexus dealer told me they need to let my engine cool for a few hours cause they can’t do a transmission fluid change when it’s hot Do you agree with this? Did you make sure your engine was cold? Thanks for the detailed video!
A Yates, our Lexus GS350 has been the most reliable car we have ever owned. We have only had one failure which was the "gateway computer" and was a common problem for 2013 MY. Thankfully it was covered under warranty. In the 4 years and almost 50k miles we have owned the car that has been the only problem. If you buy a clean GS with a documented history, you should be fine. Good luck!
Thanks Rich! Absolutely! My wife already has her eye on a LC500 for her summer toy. It's kind of nice having a car that doesn't need thousands in repairs every year (German cars). I love my German cars, but the reliability leaves a lot to be desired.
Does your mechanic also leave the old oil filter in your car when performing an oil change? I think this video illustrates perfectly why you need to drop the pan, clean it, and also change the filter. Did you see the amount of metal shavings and grime in the bottom of the pan in this video?
@@generationbehindhifi no I take my own oil and filter to change it out every time. I figured it is needed more than not. I will ask him to change the transmission filter and drop the pan. Thanks for your reply.

I've never had this service done. Dealer says I don't need it. I have a 2010 IS350 with 105k miles on it. Is it too late to change the fluid. Some IS350 owners have had problems when they changed it this late as I have. Please help???
if you did this when the trans was room temp then you don't need to measure temps for levels...just put in what you took out since both are the same temp, done this many times
I know that some Toyota/Lexus vehicles have an orange or a red straw within the overflow tube that gauges the fluid level. Do you have one of those, or was it just the black metal straw in your overflow tube? Thanks!
Wow 4 bolts to hold the filter. The transmission on the Crown VIcs just use the O big ring to hold the filter, which is a bit larger than this. I've seen them floating in the pan . Usually they stay though. There is also a mode that the car tells you when it hits the temperature. You have to do a sequence to activate it. I have to do this on mine soon. Wish I had that lift!
Lexus has the position that the transmission fluid is good for the "life of the vehicle" and that's why they won't change it. If you're the type of guy who gets rid of cars before 100k miles, then I wouldn't worry about it either.
Quick question does 08 Lexus GS 350 RWD has transmission filter or screen ? I’m looking to do a drain n fill and the mechanic says your car doesn’t have transmission filter only screen ? Any idea if he’s legit ? Also my car has 110mi and this is the first time the car will have transmission drain n fill ? Is it recommended to do it ? Also he mentioned he’s not going to take the pan down ? Any help please would be appreciated
Please find a new mechanic. The pan has to be removed in order to clean the junk off of the magnets. Would you change the oil in your car without changing the filter? Probably not. My car doesn't go reverse. Could low transmission fluid be a problem or a shift solenoid? I got it at 92k miles now it's at 162k. I'm thinking of doing the trans fluid replacement first but I used the scanner and got 3 codes. P2757 , P0983, P0761. A couple of those codes CAN be due to low fluid. I never changed it before.
Does the transmission go into drive? If so, it sounds more like a bad control solenoid. Yes, low fluid level can cause the car to have delayed shifting or not shift at all.
How much fluid did you get out? This information would be extremely useful for me
@@hayden93 It's been awhile, so don't quote me on the exact amounts. A regular drain and fill was about 4 qrts. Taking the pan off off and cleaning it tallied the total to around 5-6 qrts removed. Remember that there is still remaining transmission fluid inside the transmission: IS350 (AWD): 10.5 qt. (10.0 L, 8.8 Imp. qt.)
@@curtisyang4965 thanks, my awd GS with the 6 speed had been slipping and I think it’s due to fluid level issue, and my overflow bolt is stripped and I had dropped the pan and replaced the filter and only got 3.8 qts out and someone had put the wrong filter on so I think the last person didn’t know what they were doing and I’m stuck dealing with it
Man, This is great!! . I just got quoted close to $800 to do this service at the dealership! 😬 . Might just take on the job myself! .
It’s only
Been a couple days so we’ll see how it holds out, but I’m happy.
Just a few notes maybe someone will find useful:
1. The transmission took about 4.5-5 quarts of ATF - (I used Valvoline MaxLife which is cheaper than OEM and rated for my transmission.)
Great info. Did u remove the pan and change the filter, or was this only a drain and fill?
Also, is everything still working ok? Thanks
A man who loves his car! Thanks for an awesome video! Very useful!!! 👍👍👍
I have had no transmission failures when I change the fluid every 60-70k miles in my vehicles so I will continue to go with what works with me.
i am using 4 jack stands, how to ensure the leveling of the car? shall we use some level guage, any suggestion ?
Just eyeball it and you will be fine. As long as the car is reasonably level then you will be ok.
Who the F thumb’d you down? It’s probably someone at Lexus dealers.
Great video.
It's the people who designed the fluid to be "lifetime."
DIY DAN your the mthafkn Man...im sure your thumbs down you get are from Lexus mechanics lol
Haha! You're probably right!
I have 2015 RC350 Fsport and this is gold bro your the best
Hi Dan, thanks for the demo. I need to do this soon for my IS350. I'm planning on doing a simple drain and refill without dropping the pan. How much fluid do you think came out before you dropped the pan? I know it's been a long time, so I totally understand if you don't remember. Thanks!
Hello! Yeah, it's been too long. You could always measure what comes out and go from there.
Thanks!
Aisin is the maker of the transmission in the GS350. Any fluid that meets type WS specification is fine. FYI: Toyota owns 39% of Aisin.
Does the GS 250 use the same transmission?
Thank you for the video! Why do you have to check the fluid if you put back the exact amount you took out?
So people who don't have the ability to measure the amount know how to check the fluid level.
im guessing this is transferrable to my IS350. Quick question, but did you torque all your bolts? If you chose not to, why not?
I need that rack installed on my garage! 😅
Good video!! Thank you!
I love my lift! It's been the single best investment for my garage!
question is how do you get all the fluid out of the torque converter?
This video was fantastic!! So we’ll done! I loved every moment! You are great!
Great video, just have one question if you reach correct temperature you need to stop the engine to drain oil ? Or engine need to be running?
Thanks!
You definitely don't want to drain the transmission fluid while the car is running!!!
@@DIYDanCars sorry I meant when you fill the transmission with new oil and you will get transmission oil to specified temperature then you need to drain excess, I saw your car was running but I'm not 100% sure
Thanks!
How are the gears going
Is this the same procedures for a 2014 Lexus IS350 ?
I have a Lexus 2014, model Es250. Unfortunately, I haven't changed the transmission oil, since I bought the car. The car is a single owner, and it currently has 180, 000 km.. The agency says that if they change the oil, they won't guarantee the transmission or the repairs. Some mechanics say that I can change the oil with no problems to the transmission, others say that it is a high risk. What can you recommend? Thanks!
Don't change it.
@@ThelilMan Yeah all the Lexus 6 speeds are like that when cold...and sometimes even occasionally when hot...

I checked Carfax to see if any transmission fluid replacement took place at a Lexus dealership or any shop but I don’t see it on carfax is their a way to check or should I change it what should I do. I don’t want to destroy my transmission.
Lexus's position is that the fluid is lifetime. Obviously I don't agree with that, hence I changed mine.

I really appreciate all of the support from my subscribers over the years, but most of the comments I receive have more to do with criticizing my work than saying thank you -- other comments I have received not yours. It's been a fun ride while it lasted, but the keyboard critics are just too much for me to handle anymore. Now I see why all the big popular channels don't do step by step videos!!! LOL! Anyways, thanks again for your support!
Great Video! Any chance you could do a coolant drain/fill on the GS?
Seconded. Always get airlocks and would love to know if they can be avoided.
I have a video on how to drain and refill the coolant. Checkout my Lexus playlist link in the description.
Should I unscrew the overflow plug while the engine is running?
Hi i have a Lexus gs 350 Awd 2007 it has been bit from the bumper, i changed the transmission fluid,it like it has 2 quarts of oil. It doesn't move when press the gas pedal either forward or reverse.what do you think

I bought a 2006 GS 300, with 91k miles with no transmission service since new, is it OK to do it? Car has not been abused and even well maintained. It is one-owner, I just think the former owner wasn't aware the transmission should be serviced like many people since manufacturers advertise their ATF as being lifetime.
That’s a good question
Hey Dan, did you ever have any issues down the line after doing this trans fluid drain? I’m getting mixed answers on a forum about don’t touch it or whether to do a complete flush or not?
No. My car has almost 110k miles on it now. I have almost 60k miles on this fluid and will be doing my 2nd drain and fill next year.

If it were me, I would perform the service exactly how I did it in this video. This is not a service that I recommend be performed by beginners, but if you can change a wheel bearing, suspension components, and the differential fluid, then you can probably perform this transmission fluid service. I'm sure it's been ask but I could not find the answer. What are the torque specs for the bolts on the transmission pan???
Wish you were my mechanic.....question: ran out of gas with ‘09 AWD GS350, filled the tank half way and it won’t turn over. I tried turning it on and off 3 or 4 times to let air out. Engine cranks but won’t turnover... any ideas? Prior to that, absolutely no major issues running
Oh shit dan you went and did it haha. This is a big one
haha! I did! :)
Nice video is this process same for Lexus IS 350 2006
My is350 has 90k miles and it’s never been changed. Think I should change it or is it too late?
If it were me, I would change it, but do what you feel comfortable with.
Good job Dan! One question, the GS350 use toyota parts? Im thinking on buying my first lexus but im afraid that parts will be auper expensives.
Yep it sure does. My air filters come in Toyota boxes. The 3.5L engine is shared with Toyota models.
If it were me, I would start looking for a good used transmission to replace the one you have.

if you did this when the trans was room temp then you don't need to measure temps for levels...just put in what you took out since both are the same temp, done this many times
If you want to do it right then the fluid temperature must be measured.
I know that some Toyota/Lexus vehicles have an orange or a red straw within the overflow tube that gauges the fluid level. Do you have one of those, or was it just the black metal straw in your overflow tube? Thanks!

Hello probably won’t get this cause the video is old but wanted to know why the dealership says they won’t change it
Lexus has the position that the transmission fluid is good for the "life of the vehicle" and that's why they won't change it. If you're the type of guy who gets rid of cars before 100k miles, then I wouldn't worry about it either.
