Fine fun video! I don't have M2 experience, but several of your points resonated with me after my years driving a 2011 Evo MR. After the first couple of weeks, I found myself always, all the time, in Sport+ mode. The Evo being more basic transportation, I didn't worry much about the sound; but it did have a twin-scroll so boost was noticeable above 3000 RPM. The 12 gal tank and 15 MPG was ditto for me with that car; range was a very frequent annoyance. Traction control on the Evo was something that was too heavy-handed and I kept automatic yaw control off unless it was fresh rain after months of dry road here in California. (It saved me once when I was just learning the car and got into understeer, before I learned to blip the throttle and get AWD oversteer.) My DCT was a Getrag 6DCT470 (six speed, 470 Nm) and in Sport+ it was much like you describe. I think that some Getrag version is/was in some M3 and 458 Ferrari as well. The international maintenance schedule says to change the Getrag's fluid after 50,000 km, which I should have done; the US Evo specs said 100,000 km, and I had a failure (which you experienced the early stages of) at 59,400 miles on a 60,000 mile powertrain warranty. I say just change the damn fluid at 30,000 miles! My second Getrag developed a mechatronic problem after 6000 miles, and that was also replaced under warranty. Bottom line: I loved the DCT but by value it's almost the heart of the vehicle and really deserves some care and feeding in the maintenance department. Otherwise, having paddles that shift in 300 milliseconds with perfect rev-matching on downshifts is something that is fun to get used to and can really change your driving style in a performance situation. That, and IMO you can't really learn the limits of the transmission unless the car is your daily driver and you are constantly in Sport+ mode!
With less invasive traction control , are you saying the back end can go sideways easier ? I’m a basic driver so not sure if that scares me or not. Can you drive this bad boy in the winter with winter tires ? Love the straight forward reviews. Thank you. I drive a 328 x drive manual 2011. Love it
Thanks. Yes, especially in MDM mode, it will definitely get sideways more easily. I have winter tires on mine, you'll see the video with the original generation wheels. These are definitely not great winter cars, although they are fine in the cold and dry, in the snow they are a handful even with winter tires.
Having recently found your channel, great video and useful insight. Been looking at the 1st gen M2 for a while, but looking at your views may wait a little longer for the M2 comp. 👍
Nice review. My M2 Comp is just past break-in service, mileage does improve. I've gotten near 30 highway, and low 20s on a spirited mountain drive. With the huge mid-range torque, I rarely feel the need to rev past 5k on the street, and results in better MPG. You can program nav addresses, media functions, menu shortcuts, and more into the buttons, has been an iDrive feature for years.
Well done, thanks! I drove a long highway drive and maxed out at 26 mpg. I'd find it hard to imagine anyone getting more. Posted my dash on Instagram. The highway was strictly cruise control too. Around town, I've got a lead foot, what can I tell you! Yeah, I've used the magic buttons for a while too. Even auto dial a phone number. Pretty cool feature
Excellent real life review as always I love your content keep em coming please. I notice much harder shifts in sport mode and above it seemed smoother in efficiency mode Im not sure why and this is in my car which is a manual. Also any thoughts on the dreaded crank hub?
Hey there great info I’m in White Plains I see you’re close by. I recently put a deposit on an M2 Comp with manual tranny My only complaint was the exhaust was too quiet Going between this or m4 what made you buy your M2
M4 didn't make the cut. It's luxurious and quick, but not terribly exciting. And I think it's a poor value, especially new. An M4 CS over $100k? Pretty ridiculous to me. You can get a couple year old car for $60k, which is a good value if you want more of a highway cruiser. The exhaust does need help. Hopefully the M exhaust finally comes and it sounds better than the aftermarket options, which have not been impressive. In respect to the manual, I had a manual 2017. It was fun, but not terribly impressive. I opted for the DCT in the Comp and would highly recommend it over the manual. One bonus of the M4 over the M2 is the adjustable suspension. Be sure you'll be happy with the stiffer, fixed suspension of the M2. It isn't for everyone. It is far from a really stiff car and much improved over the original car, but it's still pretty stiff. I think rides even more stiffly than a 2018 GT3. Depends on your personal preference and what you will use the car for.
My understanding is the seating position is the same. Honestly, I've heard it isn't straight, but I haven't looked at it! I know once I notice it, I'm sure it will annoy me every time I get into the car! Many cars have cramped pedal boxes, misaligned pedals, and annoying armrests. All toll, the position is good and the car is very comfortable.
Hi Ryem, great review - thanks! I'm on the verge of buying one, but was wondering about the break in service. What exactly is required of the driver and did you follow the BMW recommended service? How many miles of driving cautiously before you can punch it? Thanks!
Nice review and some handy information. I also have a M2Comp and really enjoy the car. Having owned two 911's over the last 10 years I find this a refreshing drive as a daily driver. Not that there isn't a 911 again in my future, but the bang-for-the-buck of the M2 Comp is exceptional. I agree with all your points - especially the comment about the stock wheels. They are disappointing and a trouble to clean. Again, thanks!
the m2 cp (3600 lbs ) its 110 lbs heavier than a 2018 M3 ( 3490 lbs) and 150 lbs heavier than standar M2. Weight play an importany role n racing applications.
Wow. This is actually quite interesting to hear. I've always wondered if a 911 owner would choose a m2c and why. Both coupe and 4 seats. I keep hearing how one cannot be compared with other for handling.
What kind of tires do you have on the 437 wheels? I just got the M2 comp as well, but don't like the wheels. Ordered the 437's. Need to pick to tires. Can you share what tire setup you have on yours?
Ah, that is the $64,000 question (literally)! The upgrade is more than just the engine and a shiny strut brace. Also given what I expect will be accelerated depreciation of the OG car, the upgrade turned out to be a good move. I was surprised how the other, not highlighted improvements really made it worthwhile. Principally the change in steering and ride quality.
Tough one but the M3 is much more of a cruiser and you've gotta like 4 doors. Adjustable suspension on the m3 makes it much more comfortable for long highway runs. The m2 is not a very comfortable long range car.
I currently have a M3 comp, my m2 comp will be here in 4 days. I test drove a m2c today and i can tell you its night and day in how comfortable the m2 is. I really dislike the harshness of the M3C, i live in orlando FL and i always go to Miami to visit my mother. My back would hurt within the first hour of the trip and would have to stop. I’m 23 years old btw. I fell in love with the m2c with just a 8 mile test drive, its a while different car (i had my m3c for 55k miles).
All DIY. Need to have trim tools and watch videos, learn how to remove the door card, which is the tricky part. I also replaced the subs, they were about $250 each. The Focal conversion speakers are not available in the US, I ordered them Germany.

You say the Harman Kardon hi-fi has been upgraded and is different to that in the original M2. This is not the case. Having checked the parts database, the parts are identical for M2 and M2 competition.
Which parts? All of the speakers are the same agreed, but the head unit is completely different, now using a touch screen. Using the same speakers, there is little doubt the amplifier is more powerful.
@@Ryem3 Sorry, you are mistaken. The amplifier is the identical same Harman Kardon unit to that in the original M2 and all 2 series which had the HK upgrade. Part numbers are the same. Interesting. Having swapped the identical speakers into both cars, there's little doubt the system plays louder. Similar situation with the suspension. While all the parts have the same numbers, no doubt the suspension tuning is different. Bmw even acknowledged the changes.
Made some comments in the video. The manual is nice, but it's not great. These days nothing beats the double clutch trannys. Not to mention the 7th gear is a big plus on the highway

Nice review and nice car! A few things that make me hesitant to purchase is the small fuel tank and thirsty engine, perhaps too many trips to the petrol station for my liking as a daily driver. Also the hanging exhaust silencer box is difficult to unsee once you see it. Minor gripes I guess. Do those things bother you about the car?
Well, if it were my daily driver, I would find the range VERY annoying. Latest tank, check fuel light at 160 miles. The exhaust is not really so annoying. Standing next to the car or even 6 feet away, you don't see it. If only the exhaust SOUND was improved!
Holy shit...a car reviewer who didn't pick a manual over the DCT. I'm shocked! I had an SMG in a 2002 E46 and loved it (and it wasn't nearly as good as the current DCTs or autos). And
Yes,, thank you,, the steering wheel is thinner which is not better. But the steering feel is still dead to me. And the brakes indeed have much better modulation than the m4. Another major improvement is when the car downshift to 2nd while braking became unnoticeable/smooth, unlike my 2013 135i dct, 2016 m4 or 2018 x3 m40i. Great review. Would be better if it was in 1080p
The feel is not the best, but it's a lot better than the prior car. Some complain about not having the "slam" when you shift gears, but it seems fine to me, still very quick. Still HD, but will try 1080 next time 😎
Excellent video! You pointed out the best things that no others have. So good you point these major things out. The things I hated in the first one, it seems they fixed. The steering and thickness of wheel are what I hated in the first. Glad they fixed it. I hated the manual in the first. Just didn’t feel natural. I haven’t driven the DCT, but will soon. Focal drivers. It’s good to know you and I have same great taste. 👍 Best speakers!
@@Ryem3 i plan on buying either the older one of the comp, i still havent made my mind, but i am leaning heavily towards the older gen. This will be a weekend car that i want to get the most fun out of, and the older gen seems to fit that bill better.
@@er98ah the comp seems to be holding value pretty well, so the OG may be a better value. I would test drive them both. The comp has a lot more grunt, more than just the extra hp. The suspension also seems more refined to me, although I know the parts are the same. Besides the motor, you get the brakes and other improvements. It's actually a pretty good value. Get those hot 763 wheels!
Too hard to modulate the throttle in sport plus. This is typical of BMW not getting it right. Too bad the best sound is in sport plus. I fixed the problem with a Dinan exhaust. Now the sound is perfect in sport. Get a mini van? That's funny. I don't know if any sports car that's on empty after you use 12 gal! Weight savings is a joke! Want range? Try a GT3 with the track tank option...27 gal! 12 gal and 15mpg is a bad combination
For anyone to compare, the M2 Comp wheel thickness is 11.5 cm. It's pretty funny when a 2016 X3 sport package has a wheel 12 cm thick! All a matter of personal preference. I don't think Porsche has ever had a factory wheel that thick.

The stereo in the M2C is garbage. My 2018 Jeep Wrangler has the Alpine stereo w/ subwoofer & it sounds 100x better than my BMW. Other than that; have no complaints.
I have the HK stereo, like every US car. However, I swapped all the drivers for Focal units. Drop in replacements, including connectors. Makes a huge improvement. Highly recommended

And
Glad you swapped out the hk audio, I'm more of an spl person. Is the car sound deadened?
Not sure what you mean. Thanks for watching!
Still HD, but will try 1080 next time 😎
@@Ryem3 the slam IS there and i don't like it :D
Great review man. Lots of new to me facts.
Prior gen>m2 comp. the comp has been dulled out and I cost more $, plus the rims are hideous on the comp.
Great if you like the prior gen, they sound better too, you forgot that part!
Comparing the pull in 1st or 2nd gear at 3k rpm, really no comparison.
What wheels are those again ?
Those are the 437s. Came on the original generation.
Do the brake pads squeak?
Actually, they just started to squeak, but very little
@@Ryem3 thanks for the reply :) is this after normal urban usage? Distance? Congrats on the car anyway!
When you get a M car you shouldn’t be worrying that much about the MPG. It’s just to much fun to worry.
Haha! I don't! I worry about going to the gas station when I combine a 12 gal tank with 15 mpg! Tank is just ridiculous.
Throttle response is too good in sport plus that just sounds super picky! Want range get a mini van!
Man your car is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
15mpg??????
Haha, typically less! I'm usually getting in the 13s driving around town only
Wheel thickness.. I don't think BMW have got the msg judging by the new 3 series.
For anyone to compare, the M2 Comp wheel thickness is 11.5 cm. It's pretty funny when a 2016 X3 sport package has a wheel 12 cm thick! All a matter of personal preference. I don't think Porsche has ever had a factory wheel that thick.
Nice vid man!
Nice video. Can you try doing an English accent next time? Seriously though, thumbs up from me.
Thanks for the info.
the best thing about the video is Megadeth!!!
I'm always playing the Boneyard! Hope you'll like some of my other content, more to come!
@@Ryem3 yes sir I'm looking forward to it!
@@omarsantos929 check out my garage video and let me know!
good job
Forget to mention it gain 150 pounds. At least u got the regular wheels. They bit lighter. They u got it back wit dct lol
Got those wheels for my snow tires lol
: the m2 cp (3600 lbs ) its 110 lbs heavier than a 2018 M3 ( 3490 lbs) and 150 lbs heavier than standar M2 ( 3450 lbs ). Weight play an importany role n racing applications.
