We decided it would be a good idea to compare the brilliant BMW M2 Competition in it's manual guise vs the DCT (Auto). It was great jumping straight from my Manual car into Stef's DCT version, it's fair to say both boxes are great and there is no wrong or right choice.

If you watch the vid with captions on, every time the M2 revs up the captions say “[Music]” and “[Applause]” and I couldn’t agree more.

I am a manual kind of guy but the DCTs are so good these days. Difficult choise, heart says manual, brain says DCT...arrgghhh....luckily I am to poor to even think about making such a decission ;) Your video shows it is not all about numbers but just as much feel.

The upshift exhaust farting noise of dct is a big reason why I don't like them not worth .2 of a second 0 to 100kph imo. Also moving away from Audi/VW across to bmw because they've dropped manual option from their range. Manual M2 competition will be my next car for sure, one that I'll keep and look into single turbo conversion after 4 to 5 years of ownership. Surely by then there'll be some good development on the motors. Air suspension as well.
The pain is real mate and it hurts bad....as long as you are working your way there to suppress the pain.

Your car has the 6 and 4 pistons M brakes upgrade. How did they compare to Joe's standard 4 and 2 pistons setup? Noisy?

nes suno to be honest we were not driving hard enough to really notice any difference. Other than the obvious reduced brake fade but you would only really notice on a track or very hard driving.

Damn you Joe Achilles. Because of your videos I got carried away this week and bought an M2 Comp. I was certain I wanted a silver (grey) one with manual box. Then came to my senses and bought a white DCT with carbon wing and mirror pods just for good measure - ha! Still getting used to the settings. Initially it was shouting at me :-D But looks like a great summer for me!
I brought a M2C because of him too....BMW should really give him a raise at this point

With regards to the tyres, replaced my PSS for PS4 on my M140. Differences in cold and greasy conditions is night and day

Hello! Another great vid. I dropped you a comment on a vid a few days ago about gearing, turns out I should have watched this one first!
The steering feel difference probably is the wheel spacers as you mentioned! They increase your scrub radius, which kind of increases the lever length through which any road inputs through the tyre are felt 👍🏼

Just as an FYI, the gear ratios on the 6MT are actually more tightly spaced than on the 7DCT, which is might seem odd because it has one less gear. Both transmissions have the same 1:1 fifth gear ratio, but the DCT has a much shorter 1st gear.
Good to see a comparison between manual and DCT on the same model. Will look forward to Stef's take on the manual.

Joe, I'd love to see an in-depth review from you about the automatic throttle blipping ("rev match") in the manual transmission. I'm very concerned about this "feature" as I prefer to match revs on my own (to me, that's the most rewarding part of driving a manual transmission car), but I have no first-hand experience with it. The invasiveness of the feature could be determinative of whether I order the manual or the DCT.

Damian Ciesielski I think joes suspension is a bit stiffer but not back breaking. A little compromise for great looks and a bit more handling performance. Doesn’t compromise ride comfort that much mate
Hey Joe! Love your videos and actually made a jump into a 2021 hockenheim silver M2c manual transmission a couple months ago. I absolutely love the car! I wanted to ask you how you feel about the clutch delay valve with the 1-2 gear, sometimes 1-2-3 jerky/bucking motion when trying to get smooth shifting. I’ve been driving manuals for quite a while and have had a bit of a learning curve only because of that issue. Have you had an issue with that at all? Thanks Joe!

Cheers man, yeah 90% of the skids were in MDM, or equivilant of sports + in the M2
You've won the lottery having either! Manual preference for me but who cares - these things are brilliant however you get them!
I'd be interested in how they compared in heavier traffic situations. Does the DCT creep in traffic like the ZF 8SP does?

Joe Achilles plus the concave on the standard wheels look so much better. I chose standard wheels on my manual M4 instead of comp wheels. S55 with a manual for the win. Also get Ricky in to hoon your m2 comp with traction off 😉

Not wrong about the ps4s in these conditions. Running them on my e46 m3 and I can't belive how well they put the power down and hold the front in sub 7 degree weather!

Doesn't seem to be much of a comparison of the DCT vs Manual. It's more his car vs the press car. Don't really care about the wheel, brakes, lower ride height, etc. Was more interested in what the title specified... the manual vs the auto. Only real take away from this is the auto is 600rpm lower on the highway. Meh.

Do you know how mych torque the manual transmission can take? i am thinking to do a stage one on my m2c...
Is there a pure manual mode one these. I’ve watched 4-5 explanations and it’s not clear. Is there a mode where it won’t shift for you?
6th in each gearbox is about the same. Just don't go into 7th in the DCT and it'll feel the same :)
I love my DCT M2C but I do sometimes wonder if the manual would be more fun. The main advantage for the DCT for me is pulling away from a standing start.
Was that a GoPro mount that failed at the end? I was just about to buy one lol
Matthew Coleman lol, it was but the mount probably picked up dirt from being moved around the car. Need to make sure they are always clean. I’ve had them fall off a couple of times this time of year 😂
If the manual shift was good it would be a difficult decision, but the shift is both wobbly and notchy.
It's the differences in the suspension that make the steering more sensitive. Not the steering wheel.
Feel not sensitivity. I got my wheel changed while my car was on standard suspension and it immediately added more feel.
Cant understand why people say Joe is under the thumb of BMW - he just stated Porsche are the best! I think the M2 comp looks immense but why is it so heavy!
Steering delicacy could be due to heavier brake components.

I think I'd go with the more purist modern car; manual, good tires, low, low seating, good suspension, lots of power, no ESP (in performance driving situations) etc..
Although a DCT is logically thinking just better at everything, so Idk 😐

I’m trying to decide between a M240i with the manual or the DCT...the first thing I’ll do with the manual is put a limited slip diff on it so maybe it’s smarter just to buy the DCT M240i xDrive...
The M240i uses a ZF 8 speed Auto, not the DCT. Depends what you want, RWD with a LSD will be most enjoyable, xDrive (not available in the UK) will be a great all year round car, especially with winters on during the cold months 👌
Next year i will go from an F80 M3 to a I3s or 330e.

I don't know the driving costs in youre country, but an M3 yearly costs me about 8800€ all in.
A 330e or I3s about 1300€ yearly.

Im from Belgium.
Our inscurance is highly influenced by how old you are and how many accidents you made at your own fault.
Our inscurance rating goes from 10+ untill -2 which is the lowest on our inscurance agency.
Im 41 years old and i am at -2 and did not have an accident for at least 10 years.
If you are the age of 20 and have a accident yearly, then you can triple the amount of insurancy money easy.
To drive such a sportscar in our country you need to be of age, hard working man keeping accidents low, or a rich kid that gets it from drugmoney or mommy and daddy that doesn't know the real value of the car and money.
I can say i love my M3 because in our country many think it is for rich people which is not true , also loved my M135i and M140i xdrive and worked hard for it to get it, i can say i had it and no one can take that away from me, but also time to slow down and go for a I3s and save me yearly 7400€ 😉👍🏻

@@TropiQz I would assume for the dct since it has more gears and changes more often. My m4 manual sits at like 3.5k at freeway speeds I would think a extra gear would help alot with fuel economy

My work car 7 series (I'm a chauffeur) and my M2. I'm probably refering to all the press cars I get throughout the year...

Bik brake upgrade, I think it's a downside, because you can't fit R18 wheels, + the regular brakes can easily outperform bbk, by just fiting a racing pads/fluid
Body reinforcements, for safety and rigidity. Big heavy engine, rear drive axles and diff....
Regarding the big brake kit, it's a matter of finding the right wheel model. Sure there's a 18" wheel that fits. In other cars with bbk's is doable.
