    Every cup final day Me and my Dad would play football in the morning then back for build up, Mum would cook lunch and then settle down to watch the game sometimes next door would come in with some cans for him and my dad. and the ladies would drink sherry or a cup of tea. Great Days when only two or three live games a year on TV

    Some bloke offered my Uncle and me 1,000 pounds for our tickets as we were about to go into Wembley for that game. As a kid I remember thinking “wow, that’s a LOT of money… and we lost last year”. Always SO grateful my uncle totally ignored him 😂😂😂

      What a lovely, wonderful story that shows that money is not everything. To see your team win the FA Cup at Wembley in such a match too is more valuable than currency. Only true football supporters know this not those glory seeking, tv watching, armchair viewing Sky subscribers. Ask any Sunderland fan who was at Wembley in 1973 what the greatest moment of their lives were. I can tell you it won't be the Coronation.

    Just listen to the commentator’s voice. John Motson was the archetypal commentator. Full of enthusiasm for the sport and extremely knowledgeable too. Now we have screeching screaming women who pretend to commentate but are simply annoying.

      I can't listen to female commentators. Their voices go up several octaves when they get excited, so that they're almost screaming. I like my sport with thrills and spills, but not shrills.

    I don't support either team, but when this match was played, I was very young and didn't know much about the FA cup, I've only seen the goals. It's very rare to get FA cup games like this, but when players had bad tackles or got pushed, they would get up and get back into the game. That doesn't happen today. Players then had more passion than today.

  • @fisherpeter695
    @fisherpeter695 Місяць тому +6

    Even though I don't support either side I vividly recall watching this great game in the brilliant weather of May 1979 which was a a lovely period to live through.
    The old Wembley was the stadium most players in the world wanted to play in.
    It vast area from behind each goal gave it an aura of space lost in the new ground that is an identikit model of many new stadiums that replaced the former iconic grounds.
    How ironic the recent Euro's held in Germany held the final in a stadium built in the 1930s.
    Having been in both Wembley stadiums the old one was the most impressive. As seen in this marvellous look at the past. .

    I remember watching this as a 10 year old with my dad. There was a City-supporting family across from our house, and they'd been giving it the big one in the street singing "Arsenal, Arsenal". When Sammy Mac equalised, my die-hard United fan dad bounced off his chair, flung the lounge window open, and yelled "How about that you cunts!!" Then when Arsenal scored a minute later he had to skulk off to his shed so he couldn't hear them razzing him😂😂

    This was the first cup final that I DIDNT go to since 1968. I thought i would jinx the gunners. So they won and then i saw them lose to the hammers 1980. Note the ticket price £2.50. by 1990 standing at Wembley was £12.00 . Thats a massive increase and the start of constant uplifts . Now you pay hundreds .

      I went to the 2001 Final and felt the same way; after beating the Mickey's in 1950 and 1971, I just had a really bad feeling heading to Cardiff. Plus we were wearing our home kit when we hadn't before in the other two Finals. I shouldn't have gone and we would have won.

      No, you're underscoring the quality of the cross. I didn't think Rix was that good but that cross was perfect; and the fact that Arsenal were happy to throw two men forward meant that it increased the chances of getting that goal.

  • @sphughes01
    @sphughes01 9 днів тому +1

    Great game actually. Arsenal were simply brilliant in the first half with Brady amongst others dominating the midfield. They were deservedly two goals to the good at half time but strangely Man Utd had not got out of first gear which did not seem to matter at the time. Then in the second half and toward the end of the game Man Utd went for it and scored two good goals to completely turn the match around. The momentum was all with them and Man Utd were the favourites if it went to extra time. Then Brady again races forward holding off a couple of challenges laid the ball to the wing, the ball came over into the box and Alan Sunderland put the ball in the net. 3-2 to the Arsenal and no time left for Man Utd to recover. Simply the greatest modern day cup final!

    This match is part of my favourite football questions. The question is ‘Sunderland did it in 1979, Villa did it in 1981, who did it in 1980 and what did they do’?
    The answer is Trevor Brooking scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final.
    1979 (Alan) Sunderland 1981 (Ricky) Villa.
    Everybody starts thinking about teams not players.
