This can be said during the Dance of the Dragons when even the House Tyrell can't put a leash on the Hightowers who they described as their "Overmighty vassals". If Reach was France during midieval times and the Tyrells were the Valois kings of France, then the Hightowers are the Dukes of Burgundy, vassals they might be but they are far richer and more powerful than the King of France himself.
@@alejosantacruz7 She's was actually born as Lady Olenna Redwyne. House Redwyne is arguably the 3rd most powerful house in the Reach, just after the Hightowers and Tyrells. The Redwynes owns the largest naval fleet fleet in Westeros, with Lord Redwyne owning 200 warships and 1000 merchant ships. They are also very rich due to their monopoly of the expensive Red and Gold Arbor Wine.
Its actually a dumb assumption, there is a lot of similarity and I am aware of it but it also links to wars in the balkans. Balkans, Turks, Greeks, Bulgars have been playing game of thrones till this day

It's pretty neat how during the first blackfyre rebellion a lot of these rival houses sided with the rebels like the brackens, reynes, and the yronwoods

Don't know if it's technically a 'rivalry' but what about the Umbers and the Glovers? In season 1 Rob says: Lord Glover will lead the vanguard; to wit big John Umber retorts: I will march my army home before I march behind a Glover. Always found that interesting as to why he said that thought you guys might too
The Glovers are not lords, but masters. They are like landed knights of the north, because the north doesn't have knights. So i think that the greatjon wanted to march in the front because of prestige and not because they dont like Glovers or something.
@@maplepinguin9333 But if the Glovers are not Lords why does Sansa say on season 7 "have you forgotten your oath my lord" If they were masters they would not be addressed as my lord

Nick Salmon I’m super late but this was a show only thing. There’s no bad blood between the houses in the books. Umber was just irritated about marching behind houses he viewed as lesser.
There is also the rivalry between the Florent of Brightwater and the Tyrell of Highgarden, the first who ended align themselves with Stannis Baratheon after Renly’s death, while their overlord Mace Tyrell decided a alliance with the Lannister, and the Florents claim that they are the legit successors of house Gardener
Such a great video and so interesting. You really did some research and it all came together so well, especially with the art and illustrations. Some of this info is in my book of The World of Ice and Fire, but breaking it down to explain all the many rivalries and how they came about was what made this video so iconic. In the TV show it was never really talked about, not in this great of detail, if mentioned at all. So please keep doing these kinds of videos. I’m sure it takes a lot of time to do one of these, so we will forgive you if you don’t put out one like this every other day (lol) Just call me a big fan and I will always be grateful for what you can give us. I would think the Targaryen and Martell rivalry would be one for the ages as well. Aegon the conqueror lost his favorite wife to Dorne, before that the Martell matriarch pretty much spit in Raenys' face, they had 3 Dornish wars because the 'Kings' of Dorne, the Martells, wouldn't bend the knee. The only way they were brought into the 7 kingdoms is with an alliance marriage.
House Tyrell and House Florent. When Aegon eradicated House Gardener he appointed Highgarden's steward, Harlen Tyrell, and his family (House Tyrell) as new Lord Paramounts of the Reach. The main issue is that the Florents think they have a better claim to Highgarden because they descent from House Gardener's paternal line, while the Tyrells only descent from Gardener's maternal line. You could also see this rivalry when Tyrell decided to support Renly, and Florent supported Stannis.
@@nightfall3332 So I'm back after doing some researching and I found out they were stripped of their lands by Maekar I in 233 and The Second Blackfyre happened in 212 under King Aerys I, the man stripped them of their lands 21 years after they committed their treason. Talk about holding a grudge.
Ned The Tyrells got REALLY REALLY lucky. They were just stewards who surrendered Highgarden to the Targaryens and got named overlords of the Reach. I am not surprised that previously more prominent families like the Florents and Hightowers are jealous of them.
House Stark vs House Bolton is like House Atreides vs House Harkonnen. Even the Houses have similar characteristics. House Stark and House Atreides are seen as being noble while House Bolton and House Harkonnen are sadistic especially towards theirs subjects and enemies.
@@MM-xm5vx Sort of, earlier Starks were more prone to brutality than the likes of Ned Stark, however they always did this from a place of honor and because they knew that it had to be done.
Bjarke Johannsen not only that, during the first or second dornish war, the Martells killed a Tyrell lord by dropping i think a thousand red scorpions on him in bed
Lannister vs Martell Frey vs Tully (thought I’m pretty sure that’s more of a misunderstanding) Tyrell vs Martell Tyrell vs Florent and basically every other breath house in the reach
The Tyrells of the Reach and the Florents of Brightwater keep have a feud with each other too. The Florents says that the Reach shoud have been given to them when Aegon the Conqueror got the Seven Kingdoms, because they have a stronger claim by having a better ancestry to the then ruling house of the Reach, house Gardener, compared to the Tyrells. In the war of the five kings, the Florents fought for Stannis instead of Renly, claimant to the Iron Throne that their liege lords, the Tyrells, sided with. The Florents even lost their castle of Brightwater keep by doing so, being given to Mace Tyrell's second son Garlan Tyrell.
You've forgotten the Tyrells and Fossoways, which dates all the way back to Aegon's invasion; the Tyrells and Martells, which dates back to the Rhoynar migration; and the the Freys and Tullys.
So why do people see the targaryens as entitled assholes who wrongfully conquered the seven kingdoms, when the starks and martells literally did the same thing, killing other kings and driving houses out of their homes through conquest and yet their seen as heroes to everyone in my opinion their just as bad as the Targaryens if the Targaryens are considered to be wrong for conquering Westeros.
The Northerners, Valemen, Ironborn, Westerners, Stormlanders, Reachmen, and Dornishmen saw Aegon and House Targaryen as a foreign invader, a conqueror. The Riverlords saw The Targaryens as liberators. They've been conquered by The Andals, The Stormkings, and The Ironborn. The Ironborn enslaved The Riverlords and they got as far as The Blackwater Rush. Aegon flew in and The Riverlords rallied to his banner before what happened at Harrenhal. The leader of The Riverlords were The Tullys and they became Lord Paramount of The Trident for their loyalty and built Riverrun.
Well strictly speaking - the first men were indigenous to westeros and were invaded by the andals who conquered the south, then westeros was invaded by the rhoynar who conquered the very south, then westeros was invaded by the targaryens who conquered everything BUT the very south which only joined later in a marriage alliance. This parallels the real life inspiration of Britain. Celtic peoples were there first who were invaded by romans, then saxons, then vikings, then normans.
I so enjoy your videos. Love this family rival history. Can't wait till "Fire and Blood" comes out. Do you plan to do history's associated with that book when its ready?
Fun Facts: House Blackwood were also made King of the Riverlands. This happened just after Lord Roderick Blackwood rebelled alongside houses Vance of Atranta and Tully of Riverrun against King Humfrey I of House Teague when he banned the worship of the old gods i the Riverlands. Lord Roderick was also supported by his son-in-law King Arlan III of House Durrandon, King of the Stormlands. The rebels won and Lord Roderick was also made king but unfortunately, he died in battle before he can be crowned. Lord Roderick's heir aas only a boy of 8 at that time and so King Arlan III suggested that Lord Roderick's elder daughter Lady Shiera Blackwood who was married to an older son of King Arlan III serve as regent of the Riverlands with his son on her side until the boy comes of age but the Riverlords were against being ruled by a woman, and so, King Arlan III just incorporated the Riverlands to his domain instead. House Manderly would have been kings of the Reach. This happened when Garth X of House Gardener, King of the Reach died. King Garth X sired no sons, only daughters with one daughter married to Lord Manderly and the other to Lord Peake. Upon the king's death, both lords were determined to make their wives succeed as queen. What follows were are series of wars, treachery and bloodshed. This only resolved when the knight Ser Osmund Tyrell placed King Garth X's second cousin to the throne instead and became King Mern VI, and he then installed Ser Osmund Tyrell as High Steward of Highgarden. This is also probably one of the reasons why years later King Perceon III of House Gardener along with Lord Peake had House Manderly exiled from the Reach, because aside from their growing power and wealth, a strong claim to the throne is what sealed their fate in the Reach.
Hey bro, you should make a video on Jon Snow’s Kings Guards. When Jon was a baby, ser Arthur Dayne, Gerold and oswell fought Ned and his men to Protect Jon, they were obviously ordered by Raegar but they all knew that the (King)s Aerys and Raeghar died. So because they knew that, it must mean that they were serving as Kings guard for baby Jon Snow, the heir to the throne. I find it really cool how Jon Snow sort of had his own Kings guards when he was just a baby. Maybe he might appoint his own Kings guards one day if he outlives the war against the White walkers. I know that he has already bent the knee to Daenerys but who knows, if they manage to survive the Nights kings army and become rulers of Westeros together then I wonder whom they will pick as their kings/queensguard. What do think? If hypothetically Jon and Danny were to appoint kings guard whom would they choose? I suspect brienne of tarth and possibly a brother of the nights watch and maybe greyworm, or even Daario Naharis maybe..?
Gotenks - Starboy technically they were still the kings guard of aerys, since he is the one who they see as king. And they are sworn to life to protect mainly the king but also the royal family. So no they weren't serving as jon's kings guard they're just there to protect him
Zhi xci Well, both Aerys and Rhaegar was dead at the time Ned Stark came to the Tower of Joy. Only Viserys and Jon are the male Targaryens left, which I believe makes Jon king, which means they are his Kingsguard.
Valle Paule jon was never crowned.. so again technically he wasnt king. The reason they are there is because they swore an oath to protect the king and the royal family. And most of them were good friends with rhaegar.. but if you want to think they're jon's kingsguard sure why not. The only thing im pointing out is it is wrong because jon was not a crowned king at the time
Zhi xci He was and still is technically the highest Living Targaryen. They sworn to protect their king. And at that point Jon was the king for them. And they wanted to protect the Child of a good friend.
Probably because one Lannister king had no sons to continue his line, only a daughter... and so, she had his daughter marry an Andal knight from House Lefford and had him take the Lannister name... and their line continues until the present time in the books.
Dude....I really like your videos man! I think this is like the 10th video I have watched! Good work man! Are there any that anyone would recommend for me to watch?
Lmao, Quentin martells death was hilarious thinking that he was related to the Targaryens meant he could control dragons. Daynes maybe, Euron might get one of them, and probably John later in the books.
The martells and Tyrells also have a history of on and off rivalry And though although not exactly an Ancient rivalry I feel as though the starks and lannisters are at least worth a mention
Glad to see somebody mention the rivalry between House Forrester and House Whitehill from the telltale game of GOT. The Forresters are not game-only original characters. They have been a part of the books by George R.R. Martin. House Forrester was passively mentioned in the 2011: A Dance With Dragons, the fifth entry in the book series. But it was in the Telltale Game series that their history and key members were explored in depth.

'a room dedicated to just torturing'. I think we can all agree that a torture room was something quite common for a castle to have back in those dark ages.
This list is missing the rivalry of Houses Mandarlys and Peake, they were ancient enemies during the reign of Gardener Kings. Before Aegon’s conquest there was a Reach Succession Crisis with both the wives of Mandarly and a Peake having the best claim. The Tyrells would eventually unite the other Reach lords to force a peace and place a cousin of House Gardener on the throne. Later on the Peakes managed to convince a Gardener King to exile them leading to the Starks offering them refuge in the North.

If Reach was France during midieval times and the Tyrells were the Valois kings of France, then the Hightowers are the Dukes of Burgundy, vassals they might be but they are far richer and more powerful than the King of France himself.
@@mr.googoopants3581 Olenna is actually a Hightower right?
@@alejosantacruz7 She's was actually born as Lady Olenna Redwyne. House Redwyne is arguably the 3rd most powerful house in the Reach, just after the Hightowers and Tyrells. The Redwynes owns the largest naval fleet fleet in Westeros, with Lord Redwyne owning 200 warships and 1000 merchant ships. They are also very rich due to their monopoly of the expensive Red and Gold Arbor Wine.
yep, hidden rivalary between Tyrells and Florents should have been mentioned
Love how GOT ties into British history. So interesting.
@Jeff Yeh look up war of the roses
Its actually a dumb assumption, there is a lot of similarity and I am aware of it but it also links to wars in the balkans. Balkans, Turks, Greeks, Bulgars have been playing game of thrones till this day
The Boltons didn't also flay Starks, they specifically flayed Starks. Probably because Starks were skinchangers, leading the Boltons to see them as more animal then man. Which GRRM has written about before, I think the story is called 'the skintrade'.
Even though we've only seen Howland reed once, I fucking love that guy and his family. Plus meera is beautiful.
When i am thinking about rivalling houses, i don't think about bolton x stark or targaryen x blackfyre. I think about the classic blackwood x bracken.
But I think of Lannisters of Casterly Rock x Reynes of Castamere
We seen that fight at 6:40
Rockstar and HBO (or whoever owns Game of Thrones)should make an open world game of Game of Thrones.
T.C.G. So basically Skyrim?
T.C.G. They tried a while ago and it was shit so they probably wont try again
Rockstar should make a Breaking Bad or Peaky Blinders game. Bethesda or Bioware or CD Projekt Red should make a Game of Thrones game.
I think a choice based game is best for GOT like Telltale did all the other ones were pretty shit I hear
@Tommy De Sadi Some guy made wrote a ending on his own not official but better then nothing

Absolutely agree. I'm watching the 3rd season using boxxy software and this video makes things clear. Thank you very much!!!
It's pretty neat how during the first blackfyre rebellion a lot of these rival houses sided with the rebels like the brackens, reynes, and the yronwoods
How about the Red Apple Fossoways of Ciderhall and Green Apple Fossoways of New Barrel. They were separated in two different houses because of Steffon's and Raymun's dispute during Ser Duncan's Trial of Seven.
I'm pretty sure they put that behind them after their sons became lords

@@StubbornBullet Well you are comparing Show Season 2 with Show season 6. After season 4 the serie has gone off the books and are now a whole thing on its own. I think D&D didnt even know the Glovers weren't lords, so I think its simply an error in the show. The show is nowadays know for its errors.
@@maplepinguin9333 That's a good point and makes sense, good discussion though man
Nick Salmon I’m super late but this was a show only thing.
Thanks so much!! ❤️👍
2:13 just realized the map of westeros depicts an elderly person
House Forrester Vs House Whitehill......great rivalry in the North after Starks Vs Boltons.
Yes! Exactly what I was going to write, I love that game
Glad you do not put stupid music in your videos. These are like bedtime stories for me so loud, annoying music would ruin the vibe for me.
You don't like music
Thank god everything pleases you
House Tyrell and House Florent.
If the starks let the Boltons persist after such a long conflict as well as numerous rebellions, how bad were the families they actually wiped?
I always love your GOT/ASOIAF vids, keep it up!👍🏻
Houses Manderly and Peake would've been a good one for this video. Great job tho!

Peake:Scheming bastard, Supporting Rightful bloodline but use underhanded tactics
Didn't Houes Peake lose their lands and titles for supporting The Second Blackfyre Rebellion?
@@gfilmer7150 yes but they only have one castle now instead of the three that their banner signifies.

The rivalry between House Tyrell and Martell is worthy of mention too
Tyrell vs florents?
boom awesome it’s really Tyrells vs. The Reach

House Stark and House Atreides are seen as being noble while House Bolton and House Harkonnen are sadistic especially towards theirs subjects and enemies.
bursegsardaukar the story is more complex than that. Earlier starks were more like roose Bolton than Ned Stark.

Didn't House Martell and Tyrell have a feud?
yeah it was something with oberyn too, he dismembered mace's heir

Tyrell vs Martell
Tyrell vs Florent and basically every other breath house in the reach
The Tyrells of the Reach and the Florents of Brightwater keep have a feud with each other too. The Florents says that the Reach shoud have been given to them when Aegon the Conqueror got the Seven Kingdoms, because they have a stronger claim by having a better ancestry to the then ruling house of the Reach, house Gardener, compared to the Tyrells. In the war of the five kings, the Florents fought for Stannis instead of Renly, claimant to the Iron Throne that their liege lords, the Tyrells, sided with. The Florents even lost their castle of Brightwater keep by doing so, being given to Mace Tyrell's second son Garlan Tyrell.
little did we know we would get to see a Blackwood gut a Bracken in HoTD!
You've forgotten the Tyrells and Fossoways, which dates all the way back to Aegon's invasion; the Tyrells and Martells, which dates back to the Rhoynar migration; and the the Freys and Tullys.
you mean the Tyrells and the Florents. The Green apple Fossoways are loyal since one of Mace's sisters is married to their lord.
Can you do a video focusing on all the castles and their locations in detail. I love all your videos. Thank you for them.
Lannisters x (Insert Name Here)

Literally they barely ever married out of their family like sister wife was the most common term in their dictionary
@@sophieblankenburg5143 Sweet home Alabama.
@@codyvandal2860 Then after The Normans, The Plantagenets took over.
Ah, those notorious Sandor brothers.

I'll definitely be reading it to check if there's any new info and maybe talk about it!
That would be awesome, cuz of the details that you put in your vids 😁
Fun Facts:
House Blackwood were also made King of the Riverlands.
Great vid. Only thing is that Lannisters were established by Lann the Clever, who was probably an andal, not the first man.
One Who Craves Souls as the background music? I see you’re a man of culture
Your videos are great!
Gotenks - Starboy And you cant have better guards than Arthur Dayn and Gerold Hightower
Fascinant rivalrys
9:10 Lannisters claim to be Andals not First Men if I remember correctly
aysseralwan they were first men rulers but mixed with the andals and had an andal king
Probably because one Lannister king had no sons to continue his line, only a daughter... and so, she had his daughter marry an Andal knight from House Lefford and had him take the Lannister name... and their line continues until the present time in the books.
House lannister is in existence since age of heros

Lmao, Quentin martells death was hilarious thinking that he was related to the Targaryens meant he could control dragons. Daynes maybe, Euron might get one of them, and probably John later in the books.
Those were some crazy wivalries
The martells and Tyrells also have a history of on and off rivalry
And though although not exactly an
Ancient rivalry
I feel as though the starks and lannisters are at least worth a mention
It’s only really seen in the telltale game, but the forrester/whitehill rivalry gets pretty vicious at times (and I think merits some mention)

Morality is grey? Every villain is the hero of their own story? Apparently no-one told the Boltons that, they're more black and white than the frigging Freys!
Probably not canon since it's from the game, but another blood feud I find interesting ar the Forresters and Whitehills
a brave little lord, i dont like brave little lords
There rivalry isn’t canon, I’m pretty sure only house forrester is cannon and they only come in as a minor clan to help stannis fight the Bolton’s.
'a room dedicated to just torturing'. I think we can all agree that a torture room was something quite common for a castle to have back in those dark ages.
Cant wait for the spin offs to start
This list is missing the rivalry of Houses Mandarlys and Peake, they were ancient enemies during the reign of Gardener Kings. Before Aegon’s conquest there was a Reach Succession Crisis with both the wives of Mandarly and a Peake having the best claim. The Tyrells would eventually unite the other Reach lords to force a peace and place a cousin of House Gardener on the throne.
Later on the Peakes managed to convince a Gardener King to exile them leading to the Starks offering them refuge in the North.
Great video
They made both sure that there wont be any straks or boltens
Yronwoods also have a feud with the Fowlers, Forresters and whitehills, Manderly and Peake (though i doubt that is still lasts)
