The Crystal Stars do look like ass, but it’s because now they’re made to look like shiny cardboard rather than actual gems, most of the objects and backgrounds in the game are now cardboard. Interestingly, the stars on the magical map are the originals.
interestingly in ch. 4. if you listened very carefully in the og when Doopliss transforms into Shadow Mario, you will very clearly hear a "Mario "whoa!"" surprise noise, which's not there in the remake, alongside a "Wawawawawa+Mario hp reaches 0 noise" when Doopliss knocks him out in the original 🤔in the remake its all completely silent, and Shadow Mario himself's completely silent too, whereas in the og he still had his voice/noises. also another major diff is Doopliss in the Remake has 2 extra lines, 1 during the 1st forced encounter where he says "you aren't thinking about running are you?"(not present in the original, you only had the "NO RUNNING!" line+both sides taking 0 damage to go off of.) and in the final fight vs him where he reacts to the 1st damage taken, he has a line for taking that 1st instance of damage, which the og doesn't have. another neat difference is Doopliss actually has and uses a Life Shroom if and only if, you manage to one shot him in the final fight in ch 4. the remake before Vivian joins turn 2. this's likely as a fail-safe to stop from skipping the Vivian cutscene, but a very neat detail. the ch. 4 lore is also fixed in the remake, so Doopliss can hurt Mario in the forced encounters, but Mario can't hurt Doopliss, while in the og both sides can't take damage-
Something else cool I noticed in ch4 (idk if this is present in the GameCube version) is that the staircase puzzle vibrates your controller louder and softer based on how far the stairs are from you in the room
I played through the game in Italian, that version actually kept all the little hearts and stars in the dialogue! It's a little sad they aren't in the English version
You might have been having an issue with power bounce because they made it frame perfect after the 4th bounce to try and nerf it since it was busted in the original
Here are a couple Battle Changes that I've noticed, one of which you slightly touched up on. In the Switch Version, Super Guards are easier to pull off, but Power Bounce was made more difficult, Especially for the 4th Hit. You need to be Frame Perfect as that 4th hit has only a 1 Frame Window, for Reasons Unknown.
It's been about 10 years since my last play-through of the original, but I noticed in the Switch version when you hit the action command for a block your characters actually react with a defensive position every time. That "felt" new because my memory seems to be that the original didn't actually have the characters react to the button at all unless the action command was timed successfully. I may just be thinking of Paper Mario 64 (I played it with a fan-made HD texture pack before starting the TTYD remake), but it is an appreciated touch since you get a better feel for blocking (sometimes). On a related note, I'm glad there's an explanation for why my action command timing was off in the remake, I thought I was just getting old. I was 99% accurate on the original and felt like I might have brain damage for the first several hours on the Switch. I was halfway through the game before my brain successfully reprogrammed where I could consistently get a STYLISH after an attack, much less a double.
Another different (first Peach interaction) Original: In order to open the door you must enter the bathroom and bathe, then leave the bathroom. Remake: you must attempt (and fail) to open the door to leave, then walk away from the door. Result: in the remake, TEC is inviting Peace to speak with him. In the original? TEC got a massive mechanical hard-on to a nakey soapy Peach and wanted her to come closer to him. 😅😅😅 Subtle change but BIG difference
i'm actually surprised you didn't include the first big dialogue change, goombella getting accosted by the goomba gang in the sewers at the beginning of the game.
@@Megasnoop Yeah, in the OG, they were hitting on goombella and you rough 'em up, in the new version they get mad at goombella for being a university student
It's spealt loons in paper mario, but they mean luns*. Like "Lunatic" which means someone who worships the moon rather than sun, thus deemed crazy. Lunatic became loon because of Loony tunes which just meant wacky or crazy.
According to Arlo it was a rogue translator at Nintendo Treehouse that was responsible for what happened to Vivian in this version. He bragged about sneaking it in on Twitter a few months. Apparently this happens there every few years leading to said rogue translator being fired in a cycle. Apparently Nintendo of Japan doesn't like having Modern Politics in their products because they KNOW it will hurt revenue unlike other Companies who only think about short term gain.
Re the right side of the thumbnail: That was actually already the case in the original Japanese version. Glad they finally had the courage to take it to the translations.
THANK YOU! I'm sick of people saying Vivian's gender identity was Bridget all over again. It's quite clearly the exact opposite scenario. These whiners just weren't freaking AROUND in the late '00s when people were talking about how Beldam's mistreatment of her was supposed to be coded as transphobia.
I'm guessing they might have changed "loon" to "bozo" because loon has been used to refer to people with mental illness (such as calling a mental hospital "the looney bin")
Your problem with Power Bounce isn't just because of the slightly changed timing. They nerfed both it and Multibonk pretty heavily by making the fourth hit frame perfect. It at least gives the two Simplifier badges a reason to exist.
nice detail is that the switch version now also has a Dutch translation. They named Dooplis after Rimpelstiltskin in the Dutch version to have a matching 'p'
9:35 it was probably changed to a cricket because of the sound the badge makes. It's a frog, but to English speakers it doesn't because all frogs make a very distinct "ribbit" sound in English, despite there being _exactly one species_ that goes ribbit... the _Baja California chorus frog_ which just so happens to be the dominant species of frog endemic to California.
also with the bushes, you have to hit it with the hammer as opposed to just checking it, additionally during battles, when someone in the audience is trying to throw something at you, they dont scream when you hit them.
I’ve always loved TTYD. Played it before I could read. Hell I could barely even hold a controller properly when it first came out. Loved it just as much now as I did back then 😄
Gonna guess the retranslation from loons to bozos was because loon could possibly be interpreted as mocking of people with mental disorders. Loon or loony was originally shorter, more insulting way of calling somebody a lunatic, and got its start as an insult during a time when mental health problems were generally considered a joke. Now that society has largely moved past that point, changing it to bozos avoids any potential backlash while still being a suitable insult for the scene.
Ive never played the original TTYD until i played the switch remaster. I definitely have my gripes about the game as a whole but man is it great. The switch version is definitely a step up in all directions
Yeah. I even want to know the locations of all invisible blocks. Sometimes whenever Ms. Mowz senses a treasure, particularly an invisible block, in an area, I still struggle at finding where I need to hit, ground pound, or jump punch.
I've realized that next to twice as many animations there are also like twice as many soundtracks! From chapter-specific versions to entirely new compositions. The biggest new additions later in the game would be heavy spoilers, but I can say as much that they blew kinda my mind. Love this remake. The devs and the composer show so much love with it!
Fun fact: hooktail is either consistent he or consistent she in everywere but original english version Aboud frogs vs crickets, the original frog badge had sounds of an Japanese only frogs that the rest of the world dosn't know, so they decited to they change it to crickets because it sounded close unought, but for the remake there are normal frog sounds so frogs are everywere now
It wasn't close enough. As a kid, I found the Attack FX badge, but it sounded so little like a cricket to me that I didn't realize that was the weakness the game was hinting at.
@@volvoman5262 What do you mean description? The description of the badge? In the original game, all it said is "Change the sound effects of Mario's attacks" and it sounded absolutely nothing like a cricket to me (because it wasn't, it's a frog) so I thought nothing of it.
I'm kinda surprised you didn't talk about how they changed the dialogue in the Goomba fight on your first trip to the thousand year door with them originally cat calling Goombella.
The whole rock thing got me too. Also if you're trying to get all troubles done the one where you have to get Frankie's ring it's no longer across the bridge. Oh no. You still have to cross the bridge to get it but (and I even had to look it up) it's now on the arch where you fought Gus
I'm not sure if this was already mentioned in the comments, but the reason you had trouble with Power Bouncing in the remake most likely stems from the frame windows. In the original, each input would start at 8 frames and get slowly smaller (8, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1). But in the remake, the fourth input is randomly frame perfect for no reason (7, 7, 6, 1, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1)
i love how nintendo does not only translate the language word by word but also translate jokes so peoples understand funny part (even if the joke is different)
The two immediately noticeable things that I didn't like in the remake were the lack of the little shrieks that the audience members make when you attack them and how flaccid the End of chapter letters just weakly drop down compared to exploding onto the screen.
Random fact I discovered by accident, and I don’t know if this counts for the original. If you’re wearing the Wario badge when you fight Doopliss, he will keep the yellow after. There’s a lady in town that will comment something to the effect of “classic mario and his yellow shirt and purple overalls” and I thought it was hilarious Also while I was typing this I missed some things but after fighting Doopliss the first time and becoming a shadow person, fake Mario and the partners can be seen in the mayors house. Fake Mario will even comment on this when he jumps out of Space Time that he couldn’t attack you in town
Cool comparison vid, and what a coincidence that YT recommended me this after I had just cleared Chapter 4 last night By the by, is it just me or does the Switch remake add a weird little delay between practically every single action/buff/etc. during battle? (I know for a fact that they've separated the HP & FP values being displayed when leveling up and using mixed healing items, alongside Mario striking a pose whenever the Happy Heart/Flower badges activate)
it was so interesting to see the differences side by side like this especially as someone who's never played ttyd, this was a great video aaron! keep up the good work! :D
In remake when you do the "fake" fight against Doopkiss, he can actually damage you unlike in the Gamecube original, but you cant damage him still. Out of curiosity i wanted to see how it looked and discovered a small change. This makes sense though since he stole Marios identity and has power until his name is figured out
You can actually unlock the short cut pipes after chapter 1. If you are able to get the contact lens early and entering the west side of rougeport you can use paper mode to squeeze through the bars after entering the grate.
Another notable addition is that this game is SUPER generous with the Save Blocks. There are Save Blocks added to places that weren't there in the original. It makes for keeping track of your progress easier if you need to go somewhere and you're in the middle of a major area.
I will say. Learning about the whole partner upgrade stockpiling really helped me get through a lot of battles. Even one of the secret new bosses i basically beat in two turns because of a super guard. And there i was playing ttyd in the past like a normal person trying to fight fairly
An audio change that I noticed was during the hook tail bossfight. When answering hooktails questions In the game cube version, you can hear mario voicing nuh uh in his mario way lol while shaking his head In the switch version he simply shakes his head with his audio removed when turning down hooktails offers.
Another change I saw someone else crunch the numbers on is Power Bounce is significantly harder to cheese in the remake, normally PB has an incrementally smaller frame window for the action command in both versions but in the remake the fourth hit is cut to a single frame input before returning to normal for every hit after.
I’m in The Palace of Shadows & I gotta say I’ve been very pleased with the remake; I’ve played the GameCube version 5x over the past decade & the remake had tons of quality of life improvements, & the textures were perfect. The only issue I had was with the moon base; it lagged quite a bit, though this is very minor. I also installed the 2k/4k resolution mod, 60fps mod, & improved detail mod + a cheat that allows you to actually skip though text since the remake doesn’t allow you to skip text like the original without the cheat. The amazing remake + those aesthetic/QoL mods combined led to an absolutely incredible & smooth experience that I feel like I’ll want to play all over again immediately after I finish my current playthrough.
7:00 they also did this with General White in the shadow queen scene when he says, "Da" (meaning "okay" in Russian)... he now just says, "ok".... its so insignificant of a problem but i really liked that line of dialogue from him as it adds to his character and I'm upset that its gone. hopefully someone makes a patch with the yuzu emulator to add in previous lines

9:31 you actually missed a small change. In the original, after koops' dad comes back, he mentions that he simply "fell for a trick". In the remake specifically, he mentions that "she used the smell of her feet". Weird change ngl
@@doomsdayrabbit4398 yeah it's not like they *needed* to specify this. Because "a trick" could be anything. Like the coins, or the rare badge. But nope, he likes feet I guess

People love to hate beldam for how she treatS(ed) Vivian, but nobody mentiones how goombella refers to vivian as a boy until the ending and even her distription was "she looks like a girl but it's actually a boy" even Super Paper Mario catch card refers to her as " a cute boy " ( all in japanese versions obiously ) The modern dialoge aboud her gender is all new/rewritten

interestingly in ch. 4. if you listened very carefully in the og when Doopliss transforms into Shadow Mario, you will very clearly hear a "Mario "whoa!"" surprise noise, which's not there in the remake, alongside a "Wawawawawa+Mario hp reaches 0 noise"
when Doopliss knocks him out in the original 🤔in the remake its all completely silent,
and Shadow Mario himself's completely silent too, whereas in the og he still had his voice/noises.
also another major diff is Doopliss in the Remake has 2 extra lines, 1 during the 1st forced encounter where he says "you aren't thinking about running are you?"(not present in the original, you only had the "NO RUNNING!" line+both sides taking 0 damage to go off of.)
and in the final fight vs him where he reacts to the 1st damage taken, he has a line for taking that 1st instance of damage, which the og doesn't have.
another neat difference is Doopliss actually has and uses a Life Shroom if and only if, you manage to one shot him in the final fight in ch 4. the remake before Vivian joins turn 2.
this's likely as a fail-safe to stop from skipping the Vivian cutscene, but a very neat detail.
the ch. 4 lore is also fixed in the remake, so Doopliss can hurt Mario in the forced encounters, but Mario can't hurt Doopliss,
while in the og both sides can't take damage-
Something else cool I noticed in ch4 (idk if this is present in the GameCube version) is that the staircase puzzle vibrates your controller louder and softer based on how far the stairs are from you in the room
Another subtle difference is that the coins all go in one area whenever you win a battle, but in the game cube they go everywhere
I played through the game in Italian, that version actually kept all the little hearts and stars in the dialogue! It's a little sad they aren't in the English version
I'm only playing it in Italian from now on
I miss the little "eek" whenever you threw out a crowd member for trying to attack you
You might have been having an issue with power bounce because they made it frame perfect after the 4th bounce to try and nerf it since it was busted in the original
So that's why power bounce was a little hard
You can always use Simplifier to make it easier to pull off. But the trade-off is that you'll get less Star Power.
I've been wondering what the deal is with that, lol
"Reasons Unknown" as in they needed to do something to try to reign in Danger Mario's destructive levels.
@@chimichanga5746Actually, no, coders have found out that the 1 frame doesn't change, but every other jump does
It's been about 10 years since my last play-through of the original, but I noticed in the Switch version when you hit the action command for a block your characters actually react with a defensive position every time.
Another different (first Peach interaction)
Original: In order to open the door you must enter the bathroom and bathe, then leave the bathroom.
😂
i'm actually surprised you didn't include the first big dialogue change, goombella getting accosted by the goomba gang in the sewers at the beginning of the game.
I was probably distracted by my chat at the time😅 I definitely missed some here and there
@@Megasnoop Yeah, in the OG, they were hitting on goombella and you rough 'em up, in the new version they get mad at goombella for being a university student
sfo in the wild
Also in one of the Bowser cutscenes in the original bowser called Kammy a airhead in the remake he called her a lunkhead
16:37 I love how everyone called that transphobic user Beldam by spamming pictures of her in the replies.
Nothing transphobic about it.

They're saying femboy death but clearly Beldam is a femboy now because that's what they all think.
It's spealt loons in paper mario, but they mean luns*. Like "Lunatic" which means someone who worships the moon rather than sun, thus deemed crazy. Lunatic became loon because of Loony tunes which just meant wacky or crazy.
No, it's always loon short for lunatic.
here's a comment to hopefully get this vid more views
I appreciate it!!
Looks like it’s working! 😊
Bump.
It worked. I saw a few dialogue changes and craved an exhaustive list
14:24 if that was my girlfriend she would have been genuinely pissed
Didn't even bother checking the Flurrie locked room in the sewers. That room is definitely the biggest change they've made to the game.
Feeling somewhat cool that the reason I'm here is because I'm already subscribed to you and also happen to love this game
It's a good game! And I appreciate it!
4:05 Because the warp room is there in the remake
also with the bushes, you have to hit it with the hammer as opposed to just checking it, additionally during battles, when someone in the audience is trying to throw something at you, they dont scream when you hit them.
I’ve always loved TTYD. Played it before I could read. Hell I could barely even hold a controller properly when it first came out. Loved it just as much now as I did back then 😄
My dude just casually brought up 8 year old beef where the dude moved to Vietnam after stealing his gamecube. Legendary. Subscribed
The tattles on the glitz pit security are gone. They're the same now, where in the original they had unique tattles in the back hallway.
Thanks for documenting this. Can’t wait to play the new version myself when I finally get some free time soon.
Please, you should make a part 2 about this!
THANK YOU!!!! This is exactly what i was looking for!! If you ever play the rest of the game side by side you bet your ass ill be there!!!!!
I think the UI changes also make Earth Tremor a lot easier to perfect complete
6:36 i am so happy im not the only one. I felt like a 2000’s noob.
I've been playing TTYD for 20 years and only now learned that the Dull Bones in Chapter 1 can throw you out of the castle if you let them.
Fun fact: hooktail is either consistent he or consistent she in everywere but original english version
Aboud frogs vs crickets, the original frog badge had sounds of an Japanese only frogs that the rest of the world dosn't know, so they decited to they change it to crickets because it sounded close unought, but for the remake there are normal frog sounds so frogs are everywere now
Wouldn't even be the weirdest sounds frogs make.
It wasn't close enough. As a kid, I found the Attack FX badge, but it sounded so little like a cricket to me that I didn't realize that was the weakness the game was hinting at.
@@PsiPaula4 description
@@volvoman5262 What do you mean description? The description of the badge? In the original game, all it said is "Change the sound effects of Mario's attacks" and it sounded absolutely nothing like a cricket to me (because it wasn't, it's a frog) so I thought nothing of it.
@@PsiPaula4 aha ok
This remake is the FIRST EVER paper Mario game I’ve played that isn’t Paper Jam. Loved it!!! ❤❤
Taking the mrs. mowz heart out was a crime
I'm kinda surprised you didn't talk about how they changed the dialogue in the Goomba fight on your first trip to the thousand year door with them originally cat calling Goombella.
Flurrie is goddamn SERVING in the og - taking accountability with a warm smile?? 💅💅
12:10 it's actually pronounced like: "Poo-ni" literally the Japanese word for "Squishy"
Random fact I discovered by accident, and I don’t know if this counts for the original.
If you’re wearing the Wario badge when you fight Doopliss, he will keep the yellow after. There’s a lady in town that will comment something to the effect of “classic mario and his yellow shirt and purple overalls” and I thought it was hilarious
Also while I was typing this I missed some things but after fighting Doopliss the first time and becoming a shadow person, fake Mario and the partners can be seen in the mayors house. Fake Mario will even comment on this when he jumps out of Space Time that he couldn’t attack you in town
Cool comparison vid, and what a coincidence that YT recommended me this after I had just cleared Chapter 4 last night
By the by, is it just me or does the Switch remake add a weird little delay between practically every single action/buff/etc. during battle?
(I know for a fact that they've separated the HP & FP values being displayed when leveling up and using mixed healing items, alongside Mario striking a pose whenever the Happy Heart/Flower badges activate)
thank you for doing this..
i literally was saying how i would love to see the comparison side by side!
it was so interesting to see the differences side by side like this especially as someone who's never played ttyd, this was a great video aaron! keep up the good work! :D
Thank you Rosie! I appreciate it!!
In remake when you do the "fake" fight against Doopkiss, he can actually damage you unlike in the Gamecube original, but you cant damage him still. Out of curiosity i wanted to see how it looked and discovered a small change. This makes sense though since he stole Marios identity and has power until his name is figured out
3:24 hearing that is is so obvious to see the difference yet seeing none myself is hilarious to me.
Here's another difference. In the original, the three sisters were called The Three Shadow Sirens. In the remake, they were called The Three Shadows.
i liked the shadow sirens more, the three shadows is just a boring title imo
You can actually unlock the short cut pipes after chapter 1. If you are able to get the contact lens early and entering the west side of rougeport you can use paper mode to squeeze through the bars after entering the grate.
Another notable addition is that this game is SUPER generous with the Save Blocks. There are Save Blocks added to places that weren't there in the original. It makes for keeping track of your progress easier if you need to go somewhere and you're in the middle of a major area.
Vivian and Leshy (my Yoshi) are my fav companions in the game.
When answering hooktails questions
In the game cube version, you can hear mario voicing nuh uh in his mario way lol while shaking his head
In the switch version he simply shakes his head with his audio removed when turning down hooktails offers.
1:15 the way my eyes lit up because that’s horrible 😭
I heard the frog-cricket change was due to the translators not thinking the noise sounded froggy enough, but now with clearer audio it does
You can actually get to the new warp pipe room before getting Flurrie, you just need to get the contact lens for Zess T. once its ready then activate Paper Mode and go down the drain in West Rougeport, take the pipe that goes down again, then go into Paper Mode to get through the fence near the pipe and you can get on the right side of the big block and have access to the warp pipe room.
you rock dude. thanks for comparing them!
9:31 you actually missed a small change. In the original, after koops' dad comes back, he mentions that he simply "fell for a trick". In the remake specifically, he mentions that "she used the smell of her feet". Weird change ngl
Well now we know what Koops's dad is into... Macro footplay.
@@doomsdayrabbit4398 yeah it's not like they *needed* to specify this. Because "a trick" could be anything. Like the coins, or the rare badge. But nope, he likes feet I guess
@@burbusburbus8782 Macro. Footplay.
The warp pipes to previous areas have all also been updated for ease of use. Also, you no longer can shake bushes and instead have to hammer them.
That room blocked by flurry actually leads to a pipe room now.🎉
Liked your comparison, thanks for the time you invested in this!
Regarding the SuperBounce, there's nothing wrong with it on the surface...
*Until you realize that the fourth input, and **_ONLY_** the fourth input, is a mere 1-frame window...*
banging video, never played any Mario game but ive watched a few playthroughs of some so this was interesting as hell!!

Can’t forget the biggest change. Spinias came at you frame 1 once they see you in the original.
5:23 i think you were playing the pal version on dolphin, because it runs at 50 fps not 60, and thats why you were slower than the goombas
I'm glad I'm not the only one thrown off by the Power Bounce timing lol. I was starting to worry I just lost my skill
People love to hate beldam for how she treatS(ed) Vivian, but nobody mentiones how goombella refers to vivian as a boy until the ending and even her distription was "she looks like a girl but it's actually a boy" even Super Paper Mario catch card refers to her as " a cute boy " ( all in japanese versions obiously )
The modern dialoge aboud her gender is all new/rewritten
Cause someone latched on to it and basically ran it their way. Look I am not bothered by a change in words, but I am getting tired of lets focus on a gender of a person because that matters more than being a person of character. I miss the audience booing or cheering you on in the original, it made you feel more immersed into the battles.
You don't have to spend 64 coins if you already knew Ishnael's password to get to Don Pianta when the GameCube version came out. I thought it wasnt going to work and it did.
Yeah, I thought I was going insane when I kept messing up my power bounces in the remake. It makes sense that the timing is slightly different.
Yeah, it felt a bit off, but Simplifer fixes that.
The first goombella dialogue change is probably because the original word can be considered bigoted towards people with mental disabilities. Calling someone not smart is better than calling someone insane.
Wouldn't that also be bigoted towards people with mental disabilities then? They're both ways to insult a person's mental faculties.
@@oyeh8908 technically less offensive? Insulting a mental illness is considered worse than insulting someone who’s neurotypical. For some reason.
