Easily Bernstein's best score. And it's a treat to see that the magnificent John Williams conducted this amazing piece of music. This must have been a true honor for him -- as he is one of the greatest composers of all time.
John Williams admired and was influenced by the musical genius of Elmer Bernstein. He among others carried forward Elmer Bernstein’s legacy of great musical score for movies. They and several others are national treasures of American movie music soundtrack.
Brilliant. Movie score that has all the style of Copland (one of the greatest American composers) but Bernstein's swagger and rhythm. Perfection in a couple of minutes.
As well as "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Elmer Bernstein. And he also played piano in four of Jerry Goldsmith's early scores: *City of Fear *Black Patch *Face of a Fugitive *Studs Lonigan
It was the most misunderstood film of the 1960's, but one of the best films to date! Golden Kubrick. His use of classical was criticized but it wouldn't have been the same without it. Thanks to visionaries such as Douglas Trumbull and L.B. Abbott who did the visuals, it looks as though it was made today as opposed to '68 when it was released.
You can tell this is Williams in his early days, his conducting lacks the grace that he has nowadays, this is before he and Jerry Goldsmith took classes to improve their conducting in 1989 to 1990.
Technically perfect - no surprise, they are members of the Boston Symphony - but it simply doesn’t have the flavor of the West, the way several other examples on YT have caught it. I taught myself a piano version of it; it’s more difficult than it seems because the strings and the brass are playing in two different rhythms. This conductor/orchestra, although not as technically perfect, offers a far better flavor of the West - close your eyes and you’ll think you’re there! ua-cam.com/video/4_uF29CKVV4/v-deo.htmlsi=vB6XJxGfpUe91NUa
It’s actually a terrible rendition. A magnificent score though. Very few movie themes can top this one. Bernstein was a great composer, but he's an awful conductor - the brass and strings are in different time signatures, and it almost falls apart a few times. But I'm just nitpicking - this music makes you want to ride a horse into the sunset!
Come on Williams! This is a short version. We all the only way to listen to this piece in the long version - the way it was intended to be played and listened to. You are shaming Mancini by not doing it justice!
Mancini? This was composed by Elmer Bernstein for your Information and also a young John Williams played on the piano in the Original soundtrack conducted by Bernstein.
With all due respect, Mr.Mancini did not compose this, Ms. Sowell. The incredible Mr.Elmer Bernstein originated this fantastic music which was even used in Marlboro cigarette commercials throughout the 1960's...............
This is Mr.John Williams for God's sake... The MASTER composer of themes for Superman, Star Wars, Jaws, ET, etc,etc.... I suppose you can do better??????
At jslasher: no disrespect so called "conductor", but when you gain a reputation as good or equal to Mr. John Williams, what you stated could possibly be true, but I seriously doubt that.................
Easily Bernstein's best score. And it's a treat to see that the magnificent John Williams conducted this amazing piece of music. This must have been a true honor for him -- as he is one of the greatest composers of all time.
I’ll say his score of the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird” can’t be topped.
John Williams admired and was influenced by the musical genius of Elmer Bernstein. He among others carried forward Elmer Bernstein’s legacy of great musical score for movies. They and several others are national treasures of American movie music soundtrack.
Listen to the soundtrack of “the Cowboys” by Williams. Clearly influenced by Mag 7
Elmer Bernstein, one of the great composers of the latter Golden Age and Silver age, he is definitely top 5 for me
This is really a window in time; it was the best years of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.
Brilliant. Movie score that has all the style of Copland (one of the greatest American composers) but Bernstein's swagger and rhythm. Perfection in a couple of minutes.
It might surprise people to know that a young John(ny) Williams played piano on the original soundtrack, conducted by Elmer Bernstein!
I did not know that! Awesome!
Wow! I didn't know that!
As well as "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Elmer Bernstein.

Sounds like an outdoor performance, perhaps at the Hatch Shell or Tanglewood. Either place, a great environment. A+
John is briiliant, star wars, jaws etc but this is Elmer's song should have won the oscar in 1960-61

@@lucl5383 Treat yourself to the Blu-ray box set of the series.
This appears to have been performed at Tanglewood, which is a large tent-like theater and exposed to the elements.
It's the Esplanade half shell on the Charles River
Bravooo
Williams write the score for the John Wayne movie “The Cowboys” and the score is clearly inspired by Mag 7.
Esi atenti a cuei due la storia e verida

Personally, you can't beat the original.
Not really

Mabe you should get up and show us all how it's done .Mabe a little word of advice do a little research before you rehearse
Mancini didn't compose this. It was composed by Elmer Bernstein.
A rather lacklustre performance in my humble opinion.
This is Mr.John Williams for God's sake... The MASTER composer of themes for Superman, Star Wars, Jaws, ET, etc,etc.... I suppose you can do better??????
As a conductor I most certainly could.
i doubt that
At jslasher: no disrespect so called "conductor", but when you gain a reputation as good or equal to Mr. John Williams, what you stated could possibly be true, but I seriously doubt that.................
This is bass-heavy -the brightness of the treble is missing totally.
