Excellent work, and thank you so much for the detailed instructions. Now I can proceed with the water pump replacement on my 2005 Yamaha F9.9. Finishing this will be the last step in the complete service of my outboard. Thanks again.
Excellent job. I have a 15 HP identical looking motor from 1990. Less than 100 hrs on it. Looks and runs like a champ. Waiting for impeller to arrive to finish the replacement but everything looked identical so thanks! That motor looks to be about the same vintage. Appreciate the posting!
That was well done. Your verbals were clear and your diction was easily understandable. That greatly helps when the viewer is going to attempt a diy. Thank you
I just bought a Yamaha outboard yesterday I’m new to this and I was about to pay a bit to get serviced tomorrow but bugger that I’ll do it myself thanks to your video and I’ll remember to put the seal on the fuel filter when re assemble, but thanks man you saved me a few bucks
you forgot to take the prop off to check for fishing line that is the worst enemy of prop shaft seals and lubing the splines on the prop shaft helps insure that the prop doesn't lock on to the shaft
Fuel filter body is best removed with mini oil filter removal tool - rubber belt with plastic grip handle. Kinder to plastic body with equal pressure all around and easier to use also :)
When tighting new spark plugs you should bring them to a snug condition and then 1/2 turn after that due to the compression washer they come with. This is a one time event. Torquing after the original install should be done by feel.
Hello, I write from a google translator..I have a 9.9d engine 84 years .. is it enough to bend the plaques in the membram to unlock it for 15 years or something else needs to be done? Greetings from Poland..
great job. Do you ever put grease on the impeller and housing so it slides together smoothly or do you recommend not to use grease. Really enjoyed watching. Thanks Steve from England.
Good video bra just got my first boat and anything I can do myself I want to do now my engine looks exactly the same but not that clean on the out outside I haven’t opened it of course yet because idk what I’m doing but this was very digestible so good job bro 💯💯💯
Very nice and easy to understand thank you for such a lovely video I need your help sir for buying yamaha 9.9hp 2 stroke outboard motor from India? Thank you
The impeller only needs replacing if there are cracks noted in the rubber fins. If you take that new impeller out in a month its fins will be bent over just like the impeller you replaced it with.
Yamaha recommended NGK spark plugs specifically state to not put any type of anti-sieze, grease, or oil on their plugs. They have a factory coating that handles this issue. Also, the added lubricant will cause an over-Torque of up to 25% if you are using a Torque wrench, which you should be using.
If that’s a 4 stroke, I have the same OB. Does that have a thermostat that prevents the impeller from turning and the water circulating when the motor is cold in the same way a thermostat in a car stays closed until the engine warms up? Or should the water always flow immediately even when cold?
Great job in detail on this video. I have a 2006 model with a short shaft. I have a stalling issue at idle/slow speeds. I disassembled the carb and cleaned it out. I also replaced the diaphragms along with a few gaskets. I put it back together and I still have the same issue. Any advice on what to do next? Someone told me that the idle screw is under a brass plug that must be drilled out to be adjusted, is this the case? If so, can you walk me through it? Thanks bud! Steve.
Love the videos keep up the great work. I have a question about the water pump impeller. I put the right size impeller and all I just wanted to know when you remove the old one to put the new one in you do the clockwise turn does the impeller goes to bend that's way how it goes in the right way does it have to stay straight or do a slightly bend?
I have that same motor but mine is a little older im curious to know what those two wires went to in the blue shrink tube? The ones on mine are loose and doesn’t look like they go to anything but i would like to know is what they are and if they plug into anything
I noticed that you placed the bottom end into a bucket to run it...is it possible to use ear muffs on this model (l have a 15 hp which is the same motor)
Y'all are my new favorite peeps on you youinstube. You're in my favorite location.... My wife abs I fingerings in Redington shoes at the marlin motel by the pier 29 years ago. I would live to come down there and have all of go fishing in your boat. I'll pay! The wife loves to fish air as much as I do. Keep up the good work y'all are doin.
spot on, as a 65 year old with muscle and joint issues, I can say with hand on heart they were probably all caused (or at least brought on early) by not taking proper precautions in the past, especially protecting knee joints when fixing skirting boards, flooring the loft etc
Hey BoatGuy, we love watching your channel and your content. We're having a problem with the same make and model as the engine in your video, except with a shorter foot. The pull start isn't moving freely and we suspect it might be the flywheel component. Can you give us any advice. From Trinidad.n
Hi I have a 4hp 2 stroke gnat, I am a newby with boats. And I have some problems with it ,the lean lever for the fuel has broken the little plastic part to the carburettor. And the fuel tap leaks like a sive, can I bypass the tap and go straight to the carburettor
jon kenny mustie1 did an outboard I think 2 months ago I can't remember the size of it but he did replace all the seals in it. He's suppose have new vids of outboards in the future. Mustie1 wrenches on anything that has an engine in it on it or around it and sometimes other stuff.
Hello Eric, thanks for the vid, it is very helpful. I have bought a used yammy exactly like this one, but it has no model number. Can you please tell me what the model number for this one, so that I can order a new manual.
Under the carb In the engine bay is a linkage, the upper shift shaft slides between this and a pin with a split pin in the end usually holds it in place, chances are your split pin has fallen out or your linkage is broken, it’s only plastic so might be brittle. Bit of a tight fit but I’m sure you can do it with a pair of needle nose pliers if not them the carb needs to come off.
He had it in reverse when he took it off. The tiller was in reverse, it's just a straight thread. Loosen the jam nut an spin it up. Reverse spin it down.
Great video! Question: when I put the lower unit on it seems to be stuck in forward gear. Question: I accidentally pulled the gear shift rod out from the lower unit, is there a trick to replacing it?
I have a Yamaha 9.9 HP, 2 stroke that started slipping today, the transmission. It loses all torque & the engine RPMs go way too high. Still, it can putter along in forward. The transmission seems to disengage & the RPMs fly off the map. Did I use wrong grease when I plugged grease into the grease fittings?
Hi, thank you your valuanle information . I want to ask you something you. I have yamaha 9.9 2stroke 1999 model motor. Exhaust gases enter inside cap , motor sputter because of the dirty air, I must change the housing oil seal. Would you please write short description about it . Thank you
ThatBlue Guy56 if you watch his other channel dumpster king about a month maybe 2 months he got this garage storage unit thing to work on outboards. I think he said he shares it with someone.
ThatBlue Guy56 its Eric and a couple of other guys. There is absolutely nothing wrong with dumpster diving. The only nasty dumpsters are fast food places and they leave those alone. Monday night they live dived and found a ton of brand new merchandise from stores throwing away summer stuff. He even went to some boat place and found some kind of GPS fish finder thing. They even go to grocery stores and get food. Its usually candy and junk food that's not expired or has nasty stuff on it. If it does he leaves it be. He also goes to CVS and Walgreen's and find kerugs perfectly fine and sells them for money. He even has found one of those handheld price scanners in the dumpster put it on eBay and it sold for $600. When he has extra food from the dumpsters he donates it to ppl who need it. Its a win win all around. Saves good things from the landfill that can be reused. Its recycling. You should be ewing the stores that do this not Eric he's helping. If you still think its ew that's fine its your choice my friend. Have a nice morning day or night whichever the case may be :)
dude I'm having a problem with fuel leaking from my 9.9 yamaha 2008. as I drive I see gas going into the lake. I'm losing alot of fuel cuz of it. and also when I press the prime bulb after 5 mins or so I see some gas fall out when the motor is not on. I cleaned the carborator just now thinking maybe it was dirty but when I was cleaning it I didnt see any dirt at all. also I checked the fuel lines and they are fine. can anyone help me with this?
My 1995 yammaha 25hp outboard engine barely pees and, I've checked the impeller it's good I checked the thermostat it works I put it in a pot of boiling water to see if it would open up and it did. And I also shot water up the intake valve in the lower unit and it did pee but when running the motor is takes about 2 minutes for it to actually start to pee, then when it does it barely pees plz anybody help!
Was the key properly installed on the shaft? Almost sounds like the key is missing so not really pumping water or a jam somewhere in the water line? I had one jam with seaweed one time ran all the way thru motor got stuck in water line right before the exit hole. Had to cut out the rubber hose under the cowling.
I have the 1990 15 HP 2 cycle version of that motor that started making a concerning tapping/clanking sound. Can anyone provide any insight? I replaced the water pump at the start of the season and had the carburetor cleaned/rebuild at a local marine service shop. Both cylinders are 120 PSI Plugs look good. Coils read fine. Really nice and easy to understand video :)
Tho it would have been nice to see how you put the drive shaft back in the engine.
Very helpful thanks - i have a 25HP yamaha 2 stroke - i assume to do the same service will be more or less exactly what u have done. Cheers
Congrats...and Yamaha IT s the best !!!
Very easy with this helpful video! Thanks a lot! : )
You didn't have o-ring on fuelfilter when reassembling it.
I saw that too. It will leak when you squeeze the fuel bulb. How do I know this.....?
u got no reply he probably died in a fire
Awesome thanks kindly very thoughtful of you...😎
Thank you very much for your usefull tutorial. Great video!!
Good idea to check or change the thermostat as well
you forgot to take the prop off to check for fishing line that is the worst enemy of prop shaft seals and lubing the splines on the prop shaft helps insure that the prop doesn't lock on to the shaft
Very helpful thanks buddy

Well done video. I’m new with outboard engine. Is that Yamaha use gasoline or mix??
There is a hex molded into the bottom of the fuel filter bowl. You can get a socket on there to turn the bowl off.
Right or just pull the fuel hose's makes it a non issue
i dunno if someone pointed out you forgot the gasket on your gas filter
Awesome work thank you
So helpful. Thanks so much
Good day, Excellent Video. Just want to ask some advise. I have the 5HP Yamaha. Will the service be same as the 9.9 in the video?
What lower motor oil did use? And did you replace the oring on the screws ?
Morning. Subscribed. What are your opinions for using seafoam in your engine?
great job. Do you ever put grease on the impeller and housing so it slides together smoothly or do you recommend not to use grease. Really enjoyed watching. Thanks Steve from England.
Some people do , but when it's in the water pump housing is flooded, so not like your burning rubber. They go in easy
Good video bra just got my first boat and anything I can do myself I want to do now my engine looks exactly the same but not that clean on the out outside I haven’t opened it of course yet because idk what I’m doing but this was very digestible so good job bro 💯💯💯

The impeller only needs replacing if there are cracks noted in the rubber fins. If you take that new impeller out in a month its fins will be bent over just like the impeller you replaced it with.
Little tip by the way..put a little bit oil on the screw of the sparc plug. So it's not getting stock if you want to change them the next time..

Yes it bends. As it wares it still works
My friend has this motor. I see you had it tilted. How does it tilt and is it easy to do while on the boat?
I have that same motor but mine is a little older im curious to know what those two wires went to in the blue shrink tube? The ones on mine are loose and doesn’t look like they go to anything but i would like to know is what they are and if they plug into anything
I have a 1989 Yamaha 9.9 outboard motor what lower and your fluid should I use

Would appreciate a link for the impeller
what kind of gear oil did you put on the lower unit?
What gear lube are you using? What weight?
why didnt u do: grease Propshaft, check thermostat, compression test???????????
I was thinking exactly the same, but i wanted him to grease the pump house for the impeller.
Or grease thrust washer area throttle linkages etc. But bud covers the basics i guess
Never kneel and seemeant with your bare knees as you will tear the cartilage!
Lol wtf
spot on, as a 65 year old with muscle and joint issues, I can say with hand on heart they were probably all caused (or at least brought on early) by not taking proper precautions in the past, especially protecting knee joints when fixing skirting boards, flooring the loft etc
I tore cratilage in both knees on 2 separate occasions kneeling on FIBERGLASS sailboat floor and deck!!!!
Thanx :)
Good video Thank you very much. What is the fuel ratio mix for this motor?
100-1
interested the 9.9 Outboat Engine .

Nice video. I suspect that my engine is leaking between the drive shaft and the impeller housing. Any tips and fixes for that?
Buy a factory service manual helps
HI can you please tell me what percentage of oil vs full many thanks.
Great service
Hello , I lost my propeller ,do you know the part number by any chance? . Thanks.
How would I go about buying a 9.9 from you
Hi what are those small holes above the oil level screw ?
Do you have the part number for the Impeller?
Hey BoatGuy, we love watching your channel and your content. We're having a problem with the same make and model as the engine in your video, except with a shorter foot. The pull start isn't moving freely and we suspect it might be the flywheel component. Can you give us any advice. From Trinidad.n
Take it apart clean an lube . If it has the right rope size
What gear oil did you use I’m doing mine
Hi I have a 4hp 2 stroke gnat, I am a newby with boats. And I have some problems with it ,the lean lever for the fuel has broken the little plastic part to the carburettor. And the fuel tap leaks like a sive, can I bypass the tap and go straight to the carburettor
Are you a marine mechanic?
Yes
Anyway you can give an example of how to replace the seals with there is water in the lower unit? I think i have water in my 2.5 Yamaha
jon kenny mustie1 did an outboard I think 2 months ago I can't remember the size of it but he did replace all the seals in it. He's suppose have new vids of outboards in the future. Mustie1 wrenches on anything that has an engine in it on it or around it and sometimes other stuff.
In switzerland 2tsroke outbord engines are illigaly since 2018😢
Wow ,, overlords
What about the carb??
Where’s the best place to get oem parts??
Hello Eric, thanks for the vid, it is very helpful. I have bought a used yammy exactly like this one, but it has no model number. Can you please tell me what the model number for this one, so that I can order a new manual.
Hi. Tried to perform the service but the upper shift shaft part came off. I wonder how I'll manage to get it back and what do I have to pick apart.

You dont wipe the "access oil" you wipe the "excess oil".

Can you adjust the reed valve stoppers to 6mm to convert this to a 15 HP
how did you connect the shift shaft?? i am struggling to connect mine!!! please HELP!!!
He had it in reverse when he took it off. The tiller was in reverse, it's just a straight thread. Loosen the jam nut an spin it up. Reverse spin it down.
Is this video also for a 15hp 1999 model 2 stroke?
For the most part it’s all the same
Nice Job.
Great video!
Question: when I put the lower unit on it seems to be stuck in forward gear.
Question: I accidentally pulled the gear shift rod out from the lower unit, is there a trick to replacing it?
I just did the same thing. Did you ever figure it out?
Buy a factory service manual
Thiks bro.
is there a fuel filter on every 9.9 because i have a 9.9 evinrude , and i don't see one?

What year is this motor?
1911
Hello . What speed did you achieve with the 9.9 outboard? Maik from East Germany
I've gotten up to 33 Kilometres an hour in my 12 foot aluminum boat
the -10 means it has a 1.0mm gap .
thanks :-)

Look an see where it's leaking when you pump the primer bulb, then fix it.
Again, you forgot to check impeller plate and cup for grooves. And on a full service you should clean carb(s) and fuel pump.............rookie mistake
