hair color ratios explained + how to use a scale to weigh color | 2024

1:1 and 1:2 ratios explained, how to mix them up & how to use a scale to accurately weigh hair color at home.
*key points:
•the manufacturer's directions are located inside the box of hair color, for lightener it is located on the back of the tub or packet
•mixing ratios are usually 1:1 or 1:2
•the first number always represents the color or bleach
•the colon (:) separates the two numbers
•the last number represents the developer amount
•a 1:1 ratio is equal parts (1oz of color + 1 oz of developer, 1 scoop of bleach + 1 scoop of developer) it doesn't matter what you are using to measure; it will be equal parts.
•a 1:2 ratio is one part color to two parts developer (1 oz of color + 2 oz of developer, 1 scoop of bleach + 2 scoops of developer)
•to weigh color/lightener using a scale:
turn the scale on
place the color bowl on the scale
zero out the scale (usually by pressing the "on" button once)
now it will only weigh what goes inside the bowl
add your color or bleach (for a 1:1 ratio, an example = 1 oz of color)
zero out scale again
now it will only weigh the developer- (for a 1:1 ratio, an example = 1 oz of developer)

I’ve seen people use bleach at a 1:1.5. What is the benefit of doing this other than changing the consistency? Does it make the bleach stronger or weaker?

That’s a wide range, I’d probably go with a middle point (1:2)

Yes but it's easier to make sense on oz for some people once you start taking grams people get overwhelmed
