hair color letters & numbers (tones) explained | 2024
a breakdown of what the letters & numbers mean on hair color boxes.
*key points:
• On hair color boxes, the first number represents the level (example: 7N = hair color that is a level 7)
• Levels are how light or dark the hair is (not including tone). They are measured 1-10 (sometimes 1-12): 1= black, 10= palest yellow.
• Hair color levels ARE universal between lines- a level 7 in Redken is the same as a level 7 in Wella
• To the right of the level are more numbers or letters; these represent the tone (reds, purples, golds)
• The first letter or number representing the tone is your primary tone. For example, 6BV stands for level 6 blue, violet. Blue is listed first, so it is the primary tone; this color will have more blue. Violet is the secondary color because it is listed second, so less of this color will be added.
• The numbers and letters representing tone are NOT universal- they do not all mean the same thing between color lines. For example, 9P = 9 PURPLE in Paul Mitchell, 9P = 9 OPAL in Redken Shades EQ (opal is more of a mix of violet and blue). They are similar colors but not the same.
•Loose guide of what the letters mean:
N - Natural
A - Ash
V - Violet
R - Red
B - Brown or Beige
G - Gold
C - Copper
M - Mocha or Mahogany
W - Warm
• The N series is natural or neutral-it doesn't have an overpowering warm or cool tone. These are great for covering gray.
• When a hair has a double letter listed for a tone (7NN), it is double pigmented. These often turn out a shade darker. To avoid that, you should use a level lighter on the hair. The NN series also works really well for covering gray.

Demi permanent you need developer ?
I dyed my hair using boxed dye to make it white blonde. Currently I had med blonde but my roots are very gray. I made a disaster and now I have very white roots and the rest of my hair is yellow and parts light red.HELP PLS
I am so glad I found your channel you explain everything well in the video for people who don’t go to cosmetology school, I also really enjoy the recaps at the end and the nostalgia 90s posters and toys 😂
Good job!
I love your content so much. When that happened to me, I just used peroxide, without bleach, to get my hair a bit lighter after an orange bleaching result. After that I put some ash toner (Wella Live drops in Ice Silver) and sorted.
I'm going a light to medium brown and want to cancel out the red. I'm usually a dark strawberry blonde / dark blonde. Should I mix the toner in with the brown dye, or tone after I dye? I want to neutralize the red tone, but go darker. I don't want a too warm tone(my hair grabs the warm/orange). after I get the brown right, I plan to highlight a cool blonde in the front. I would like to at least do the haircolor myself and maybe have the salon do the highlights only
Why my color goes dark. I want to keep it light brown but after dying they become dark brown. I want to know how much developer should I mix? Please reply.
so helpful excellent tips and teaching
awesome you’re a great teacher
Omg you are amazing thank you !!
I would be pissed if I got that lift to orange from brown then go back to the same colour or a level or 2 lighter lol 😅😅😅 and the cost
Thanks ☺️ really enjoying your channel I have learnt so much about hair I bleached my hair today it’s at a level 7 , I will wait a few days then lighten it again , 😊 do I use 30vol again or can I use 20vol to lighten it again? I want to get to a 8-9 ash beige blonde
this is so forking helpful, thank you.
My daughter has incredibly thick curly hair can you use it for curly hair.. her hair is copper red and the curls are 3b so I was curious. Thank you.
Your channel is always THE BEST option w for hair related tips! From hair color to hair extensions; you break it down in a way everyone understands. I learned more about developers from you in this video than I have from other sources in the last 20 years. Thank you so much for your contribution to at home hair care! You're amazing ❤
I have 100% all natural non dyed gray hair with light brown natural tones. I want cool silver. Can i do t18? Or 10vb?
If I could have clicked the "like" button a dozen times, I would have. Thank you for this GREAT video.
You kill it young lady! Thank you, finally someone who knows what they are talking about and how to explain it to a 6th grade class that understands everything you said!!
If i’m not mistaken, pravana chromasilk P = pearl and pearl = pink. 🤦 Could be wrong but i think thats how those are
Thank you for this video! After the bleach bath does the hair have to be completely dry? I heard you say blow dry but can I apply the color on 60-80% dry hair?
Thank you!
enjoy your video. I have a question. What color can I use to keep my gray hair toner .
Cut my hair as you said ...great result...very pleased thanks so much ...❤

This lady has saved more lives than our government
Please help us brown black hair color ladies looking to refresh and or warm, cool, or neutral
After watching so so so many other videos this is THE BEST video on how to fix this!!!. This is not the first time I come across this issue and although the solutions on other videos where a little similar NONE explained with this detail how to fix it. I was about to make a mistake and you definitely SAVED MY HAIR. Thank you so much ❤❤❤
Thank you!! Very Helpful!!
WOW! Never heard it explained like this. Fantastic!
Love the way she explains things. I have Afro type hair and I followed your videos, finally bleached it and toned with Wella toner
I paid for a coloring course and the person was not able to explain so well, thank you very much. I
I have one question only, when are you going to release an online course? ❤
If I knew how to do that, I would!!! Technology is not my thing but I am working on learning!
It's kind of weird seeing Brittnee being serious lol. But the whole thing was very well explained.
gotta balance the scales LOL!!!!
Just when I thought I knew something, I realize I don't know nuthin' 😂😂😂Love this video❤
Girl yes this explains alot ..I am licensed but not educated
What I have never understood is that getting orange is a result of not leaving the bleach on long enough, so why is rebleaching bad, arent you just picking up where you left off?
Thank you for this series. It’s game changing to the point where I’ve gone into Sally’s to buy products and not RUIN up my hair😂 also helps to save some cash cause LORD ITS EXPENSIVE UP IN THESE STREETS
What if you want to go from a 10 to a 7 blonde? Do you need to fill it with a 7 copper?
❤
This is exactly what I have been wondering about lately! Especially since a brand of dye I was looking at uses a label like "B175W" for a level 2 red violet, but I didn't know how that translated to other brands.
This is so interesting! Growing up i always had a pair of thinning sheers in my grooming box. I would yse them to thin out horse's manes who didn't tolerate pulling, or if i needed a show ready mane quick! Worked like a charm!!
I love tgese videos! Britnee is so good at explaining everything!!
Where’d you get the hair swatch tone chart?
furbies 😊
Is this a fake account?
no, its me!! i make these videos every friday
Thank you so much! This was one of the most helpful hair color videos everrrr! ❤
Brisket!
Thank you ❤
