INDYREF 10 YEARS ON: Did Scotland blow its only chance of Independence?

- We look at how the Yes Campaign was derailed in the final days of the IndyRef vote.
Exclusive interviews with the then First Minister and SNP leader Alex Salmond, who was campaigning for a YES vote. Then we speak to the head of Better Together strategy, Blair McDougall, who tells us how the NO vote triumphed.
Scottish Sun man Matt Bendoris relives the fascinating last hours of Alex Salmond on the day of the big vote as the SNP leader drank champagne and placed bets, thinking the YES Campaign had won.

There is no such thing as "Scottish Labour" the party is registered in London with a branch office in Scotland. A freedom of information request cleared this up years ago and is easily obtained for yourself if you put in an FOI to the party. What you call Scottish labour is just the same party as the London party only they sit in Scottish Parliament pretending to be a different Scottish Party

Alex Salmond is no longer part of the SNP and hasn't been for 10 yrs he has his own party This has been common knowledge for years now sigh and if you think its stupid to give money to the EU why is it ok for Scotland to have theirs taken by Westminster ? Rather hypocritical comment

They didn't choose brexshit did they.
Unlike Indyref, Brexit wasn't a devolved referendum. Debunked. Move on.
@jake751 aye they did, did 100% of Scotland vote to remain in the uk?

Do you know what "Devolved" referendums are? Do you know what "National" referendums are?
@w33btrash69 buddy I agree with you, I am sick of hearing Scotland voted to stay in the EU. We voted to remain part of the UK and the UK voted to leave the EU.
I wonder how much money Sturgeon would have scammed if it had happened???
No where near as much as johnson or starmer.
Except that Sturgeon hasn't scammed any money.
The whole operation against her is falling apart before our very eyes.

Not one of them could answer simple questions on currency, pensions, security etc etc, and they STILL cannot give a clear plan or explain how indie would ‘work’ for Scotland. I bet they would vote leave now. Who wants anything to do with England.

Clear answers are given every day to these questions, you just have to actually stop being lazy, stop listening to the English media and go and get the answers for yourself (though tbh, they're incredibly specific questions which have no meaning or even relevance in any wider context).

All the years of hard work by Alex Salmond (a wonderful Leader) was ruined by Nicola Sturgeon, single handedly. Shame on her. I would love Scotland to be Independent but, tragically, I doubt it will happen unless Alex leads it.
Let's be honest. The UK (mostly the English) shot itself in both feet by voting for populist BREXIT. However, the Scots saved Scotland by rejecting populist independence. Oil and gas would not have bankrolled an isolated Scotland, and the EU (particularly Spain & Hungary) would never allow Scotland to join their club.
Brexit was a good decision.
None of us voted for EU leadership because it’s a dictatorship. We have our own political issues here!

Scotland voted SNP and look what they got. So they voted mostly Labour, who immediately cancelled their oil. They won’t vote Tory so try Reform. They can’t do any worse.
That choice saved Scotland. Given how the snp has run Scotland so far, imagine how much worse it would be without the uk support.
Scotland is still decades away from being ready for independence.
The snp has done absolutely nothing to prepare for it at all.
Scotland will need a currency, stable economy, trade deals ready to sign, a budget for healthcare, education, policing, defence, state benefits, infrastructure and investment ready to go using only the money from Scotland alone as there will be no more funding from the uk.
Keep in mind that if the snp are in power when Scotland becomes independent Shetland and Orkney will declare their own independence from Scotland taking with them the large percentage of the oil fields.
A lot of the oil fields are British owned. All the infrastructure is 🤷🏽♂️
The oil argument is weak. Especially when they wouldn’t even have a currency if they became independent 😅
The UK is not a prison and any member can freely work towards independence if they choose. If England wanted independence I dont think the rest of the UK could prevent it.
The govt wouldn't let them. Same as the excuse there was no oil left in Scotland. if that was the case then why did they not cut Scotland loose? oh yeah, they "conveniently" found two major oil/gas fields after the Indy vote failed. No use now though as they won't issue licences...
@@Big_Gaz_1 Nobody but the Scottish can choose to leave the UK. It's not a prison the English, Welsh & Northern Irish have no say in the matter. SNP got a mandate from the people had a referendum & the majority voted no. As for the Oil it's a tiny contributor to the overall UK economy hell the computer games & hairdressing sectors are bigger in terms of the billions they contribute. It's not Saudi Arabia north sea oil has the highest extraction costs in the world it makes little profit per barrel for the UK & it's production is in terminal decline from 2.7 million barrels per day 20 years ago to around 700,000 today. The major fields have all been depleted & new ones Rosebank & Jackdaw have only a few million barrels in them. Tapping them is more about energy security than making profit & they won't last more than a few years before they're also depleted nor will it prevent overall production decline in 10 to 20 years I doubt there will be any fields still active.

the problem with the vote is how it was structured. scotland should have had a referendum to negotiate the possible terms of separation with london. london would effectively be forced to negotiate to keep scotland in, and then after some fixed period after that (say, 2 years), scotland should have been able to vote again whether to go independent based on those terms. this would have been a win-win-win for democracy and scotland, whatever the outcome.
