Welcome to Modern Homestead Alaska. We are located in South Central Alaska near the town of Wasilla. Living in Alaska and building our dream of “modern Homesteading” through the wilds of winter and the long summer days. We started building our Modern Homestead in 2021. We have since completed the upper levels of our home. Built a 16x16 foot chicken coop that dreams are made of. Our chicken ladies live in luxury as they view the beautiful lake from large windows inside the beautiful coop. We raise our own poultry, hunt for our food. We are avid fisherman And woman. We also built an amazing and beautiful wood shed. We have great big garden planes for the future. Join us as we dream big dreams and live everyday working hard to accomplish them.

Thanks for the virtual ride. Especially Larry loved it. I remember my dad had a six wheeler called an Amphibian back in the day. He just bought a Spider cycle to ride in here in Florida and take back to NY for the summer. I’ve seen other Alaskan videos where folks are riding snow machines without helmets! Especially young ones. A law in NY. We’ve never had goat cheese. All looks yummy! Thanks for sharing!😊

I love the sound of a snowmachine we used to ride them when I was a girl on the farm. I miss them. Also, your chickens are beautiful. Mr. rooster is so handsome. I have chickens too. I have a Rhode Island red and he is not friendly he will always stomp around whenever I go into the chicken coop.

Smoked turkey AND ham? Interesting. We stopped having smoked turkey and ham because they look & taste alike & everyone wanted their turkey to taste like turkey.
Soldier fly larva is high in protein & a great chicken treat in winter & during the molt. As for the calf, extra thick bedding in the stall is best to allow the calf to snuggle into it. Calves, dairy cows or mini cows lose heat more quickly than beef breeds & need areas that are safe & protected against cold winds.

Thank you so much. I found a dynamic difference in our ham and turkey. But could be that the ham is actually grilled with cherry jelly and not smoked with a pepper seasoning like the turkey. We change it up fried baked all the different ways each year. Thank you so much for the comment

It was such a relaxed beautiful day.
we had a neighbor we all called grandma Joan she live 6 houses down. she was my kids grandma as my mom inlaw in Mexico n mine passed n well my mom was not even really a mom. so she was n hubby grandpa bill anyways she always had a pair of tin snips in kitchen I nvr asked but always wondered then one day she pulled them out n cut up chickens n a turkey who knew lol. I cared for them for many years then popa passed n few years later a granddaughter she raise from birth movebto Henderson n took grandma with her, she past not long after ( 2yrs give ir taje) I'd go up n visits n everytime I went to Dr's I took lunch n her fav treats .

We used heated dog bowls for our chickens water ..worked great!!! 😊
So smart! We are building a shop (fingers crossed) and going to run power when I do to the coop and barn I want to invest in those bowels
We only want to pay the one time to run all the outside power it’s going to be a big deal.

I couldn’t help but laughed until I almost peed my pants. I know too much information. We had a Boxer that ate the inside of my pumpkin pies while we were at church. No crust just the filling. You guys could decorate your farm for Christmas with a lot of Christmas lights you could use the solar power light so you can save money
If only we got enough sun light to run them. We use lots of rechargeable lights for the cow and chickens. Someday we will have the power figured it. Takes time and lots of $ both seems more scarce by the day

Oh no that’s not an open shed. It’s a full on barn, she gets closed in at night, no wind and and lots of warm bedding. But cows don’t actually need barns it’s just extra nice. Would you keep your chickens warm when it’s very very cold in Alaska
Yeah great point we are very proud of the coop we built, we have actually managed to keep the chickens and have not lost any due to cold. It was a huge investment but they are worth it.
I just wanna know how do you keep your chickens warm when it goes in the minuses like -22 Fahrenheit how do you keep them warm
@@simonemoreno4324 they grow winter feathers. If you never introduce heat to chickens they will do the same thing wild birds do. Like the eagles and hawks and ravens to name a few we have here near us. They grow winter feathers, we also use straw and shaving and other bedding to make sure they stay dry that’s the most important thing. As long as they are dry they can keep them selves warm. Along with lots of water to drink and food that puts a little extra fat on them, and lastly I keep the wind off them. They need airflow but if it’s windy I shut the windows and wait for it to pass.
They are amazing creatures and God created them to keep themselves warm. Oh one more. I pick breeds that are built or better equipped for cold.
How do you keep the water from freezing they’re drinking water do you get the heated bowls?
@@simonemoreno4324 no actually we learned from my husbands old rancher family, if you give water around the same time they will drink what they need, so twice a day I go out with fresh water, and I gauge how much they have left, if they are drinking it all I bring more, and I just use rubber bowels, so I can stomp the ice out of the bowels. Not only that animals will eat ice and snow. In fact chickens seem to like ice, (don’t think that’s a substitute) but they just basically drink as much as they need and the rest freezes and we start all over. Someday when we run big electric to the coop, barn and shop we will use those dog bowels that don’t freeze. We just don’t have a way right now.
