Memories from my childhood right there. Processing moose, deer, salmon, raising and processing pigs, turkeys, chickens, beef...kept us fed well. Gardening, foraging, tapping trees, canning.....it is foreign to folks nowadays but it was a way of life not that long ago. It is just what we did. I just turned 50, so I don't consider myself old. We did it all while going to school or working. Instills a strong sense of family and community and builds character and work ethic. I am thankful for it all to this day.
I love it it makes fir better rounded people who appreciate everything differently.
What a godsend you were to your neighbor. Love the freezer organization.
Blessings all around! Full freezers and moose meat!
The Good Lord says He will provide all our needs, and He does!!!
Amen
That was a lot of moose. If I was younger I would love to move to Alaska. Y’all are amazing.love this video.
Hi Jessica, your Community is pulling together in a time of need 2-9-2023👍🏽👍🏽❤️
That is being a good neighbour
Hey Jessica. I never processed a moose lol, however I have helped with many of deer in my lifetime. And yes it helps offset buying meat.
in college.i was a butcher n mechanic, brought back memories. I miss raising n eatting my own hogs n beef
It’s wonderful
What a blessing ❤😊
Freezer organisation brilliant!!!! The moose part was really interesting also the "" moose call "" BRILLIANT practice, feeding families and no waste 👏👏👏👏👏 Love from the UK x
Amen. No waist
Wow ladies a job well done, A productive day .looking forward to more good video`s, Thank you for sharing your day ❤
You are my kind of neighbor!
That’s so awesome that AK will give the moose to people to use . Here in California they don’t let anyone touch any deer or elk it just goes to waste .. but then again it’s California
Agree
I also watch the bearded butchers they are great
My husband loves them. I only see it when he is watching them. Lol I think for our first time with no direction and help they would of been proud.
Wow
We used to write with dry erase pen on outside of our freezers whenever there were odd items. Like freezer for beef, but you added three lasagna in it. So I wouldn't forget them, I wrote "3 x lasagna" on outside of freezer.
Great idea
I love processing moose!
I don’t like to add fat to our burger either. For good burgers you can add ground pork shoulder in instead. But like you said, it’s the best quality red meat you’re going to get, and I don’t like adding in grocery store quality suet or tallow from animals that aren’t going to do the moose meat justice.
Great work getting all that done, there is nothing more satisfying than a freezer full of moose.
It’s so amazing
Wow, that’s a lot of moose. Good neighbor that you are for sure.
Thank you
Hi sweet one! You have done it now...I am inspired to clean out my freezers...lol!!!! I think the moose processing is fascinating! That is a LOT of moose!!! Big hugs and many blessings!
Hello sweet friend! Thank you!
What a learning adventure….processing a Moose…wow it looked like a lot of work….nice she has you as a friend…
It was a great way to learn
Wow that Moose butchering was amazing you ladies did your selfs good. Lol I was just talking to my kids that we need to hit our freezers to get them all organized, before our 1/2 a cow comes this month.
Thank you
That brought back really old memories, we did it as a big multi family with grandparents, aunt's, uncles, and every kid over 6 had their jobs. We'd do 4-5 hogs on Saturday and 2 steers on Sunday plus render lard and make stock that we canned. Then another weekend would be chickens and turkeys. That didn't count hunting season deer, rabbits, squirrels or birds and fish.
Amazing way to live
Wow big!!!
You’re one busy lady
This was awesome! You did an amazing job cutting that quarter down. I love watching videos like this. I caught that shout out to the Bearded Butchers! 😆😁 Thank you for another great video! 🩷💜🩷
Lol thank you
I am anxious for you to have inside steps to your basement.
Me too! 😁
I enjoyed the vlog.
That’s wonderful that you helped your neighbor like that! An amazing process!
Wow!! How great that you were able to help your neighbor. I have never tasted moose, mainly because they don’t roam these hills.
I remember helping butcher the various farm animals as a child. When we finished a beef, we always had cheeseburgers!
Until our next visit, stay safe !
❤Momma G
Love it’s such good memories
I need organize my freezers. I tried to buy the one at Costco like you bought, but our Costco does not carry it here. Still can’t figure out where to order it. Wonderful for your friend getting that moose and I love that none of it goes to waste. That is how it should be with everything. Nice job with your freezer and helping your friend. You guys worked hard.
Thank you
You worked hard today. Sweet of you to help out with your friends moose. You are a good friend.
Thank you
Boy! That is much more than processing a white-tail deer! And I never thought about making bone broth…. Wonder if I could do that with deer.. hmm. That was exciting! Ya need an empty freezer just for the moose!
Wonderful
Moose is a lot of work, I am
So glad we have the moose calls! Yum moose!
Agree! Worth every hard hour
Such a wonderful gift. Our neighbors in the past have given us moose to process , for sure it is work but so good. Good fortune! My favorite is the heart.
Agree. It’s amazing and great full for the fortune. Beautiful blessings
Love it. What a skill. I want to learn this definitely ❤
It was such a great learning experience
Hi Jessica and sweet family! I did this exact same thing yesterday morning. I couldn’t sleep and woke up at 4:00 AM, decided I might as well be productive and organized and separated my freezer.
I’m not grossed out, we used to process our own meat. That was awesome you helped your neighbor. My husband and I used to harvest our hogs every year with a neighbor since they dispatched their hogs.
I hope you and the family have a blessed night!
So wonderful
Take pictures of inside of your freezers, as a reminder. As well as writing a list on your phone. Proteins, different types. Put a star by the item that needs to be used up soon. Then vegetables, then fruits etc. I can be waiting in a Dr office and be looking at my lists and come up with new ideas what to make.
Good idea
When I first saw the picture I thought you had a moose of your own. If so, then you would have had to purchase an additional freezer, just for the moose meat. I had mentioned to you before, that I shot a moose in 1990, and my hubby shot one in 1995. Each time, the meat filled our freezer, and we gave away a ton of meat. The moose meat is so lean, (very little fat) that you need to add beef hamburger meat to it, (at least we did) Oh, but her moose is so beautiful looking. Lean, Oh my goodness! ! ! I know you all go fishing, but do you hunt as well? (Ducks, yes) But what about deer and moose? Once you taste Moose meat, you will want to hunt for one, and get it! SO DELICIOUS! ! ! Great job in keeping your freezers so orderly. I really enjoyed this vlog.....Hugs, Bev in Maine
I know w ovule love to fill our freezer you are right we will work on cleaning our freezer the month before hunting season
That burger looks so good and lean, I always ug sirloin burger 90 lean and up.good job ladies.
It’s so lean
Wow! That is a great Blessing for a family.
God Bless You for helping her.
Agree
Very helpful on organizing the freezer. I also really enjoyed the moose processing. Very interesting.
Agree
Hey Jessica, I wish BC had the same thing. When the poor moose get hit here, the highway workers either throw it off into the bush or take it away . It’s sad. James and I don’t add fat either. However I wish we had some pork fat last fall to add to the burger. But I didn’t. Anyways, great video, you girls rocked that out. ❤️🇨🇦
Oh that’s so sad they don’t let people use it. But it’s like that most places. I like a little fat too
Oh, man, I need to organize my two freezers! What a blessing the moose was to your friend's family. God bless you, and your family.
Thank you
Freeze food at -25 last up to 25-30 years just think about national food reserve everything is kept freeze at -25 -30 for up to 30 years every 30 years the food will be rotate with new . So as long as you keep it freeze the food won’t go bad
Wow, that looks like hard work. You are so nice to help a neighbor in need.❤
You where meant to be an Alaskan. Not many know the Alaskan way. You and your family represent well.💚
Oh wow that’s a huge compliment
💯
@@modernhomesteadalaskayou’ve been initiated if you’ve stoped what your doing to help butcher a moose. Lol it’s pretty unique to the Alaskan way. 💚
Can't wait to watch this episode!! What a blessing to her family and your community!
Love it
That was a long day processing a Moose. So good of you to help out with your neighbor.
Thank you
You learn today
Thanking for sharing
Thanks for sharing the moose processing. That burger makes some great moose chili. I like the idea of her adding the fat later so she can decide if and how much she wants to put in.
I agree
So great to have neighbors that you can depend on in this day and age. Also I am always amazed how quickly my pantry and freezers get so disorganized. I like to plan on a canning day or days after I clean my freezers I especially like to can meat. I love your videos
Great point!
Great you were available to help her with the moose. I've done plenty of deer, but never anything like the size of a moose. I always enjoyed it. Although it can be a long day.
It’s long and worth every min fir sure
What a blessing and that you were able to help out. ❤
Amen
Great video!! Excellent freezer organization. 👌 and wow! How cool that a program like that exists where you live. I'll have to see if that's something that happens here. 🤔 and what a blessing for your friend for her family and to you for the practice for when a moose comes to you. Looks like it went well. Take good care!! 🙏
Thank you
Amazing job, and amazing friend you are ❤️. What a great program that nothing goes to waste and I loved how you admitted you learned some new things I truly believe we can learned all through life. Great freezer ideas. We do the same as far as the refrigerator/ freezer for that weeks meals. I’ll have to try the container idea I had wondered if they take up space but Im Thinking I’d like the organization better! Have a great week !
Thank you
I couldn't raise a animal n then kill, clean n eat it. I'd get to attached to them. When I was pregnant with my oldest daughter almost 40 years ago I helped a friend clean some chickens. I did really good all thru the cleanin part, it wasn't until I went to eat a gizzard that it got to me. That was only cos I membered what it was like cleanin it, took me almost 20 years till I could eat one again. I didn't raise them, so was able to eat them. I love moose meat, a friend of mine her husband was n the Air Force n was stationed n Alaska. Can't member where the base was located, but anywho on one of their trips back home (Indiana) they brought back a cooler full of moose. Also had some jerky made with it. It's always a great feelin when you can help a neighbor out. God bless ❤️ from Indiana
Just goes to show you that the majority of the People could never survive a shut down 😂
I have to tell you I have my chicken processed for this reason. And I won’t eat the moose for several days after. I say no shame whatever it takes to raise and harvest good food. If I need some space between my chickens I raised and putting them in the freezer no shame in that.
It’s true. Most will never understand the value of what they eat and what it took to get it to the plate. Just my opinion it’s why we have so much waist.
@@modernhomesteadalaska no there's no shame n that at all. I guess that's why they always say that one shouldn't assume anything
@@deannawiederhold3326if push came to shove, I could survive a shut down
Lots of good ideas for the freezer. 😊👍🏻
Moose processing was good information. Thanks. And that’s so awesome Alaska has a program like that. Not here in California
Love it
Loved this video! You freeze everything, any good tips with that. The tomatoes looked great 😊. Well done with that moose, what a blessing to your neighbor 🦋
Oh I don’t know. I freeze so much that I need to think of what some good tips are. I’ll work on that
Amazing colour meat . Lots off work alright . Hope you rested some after that . 🙏🕊🙏💞🇨🇦
I agree so deep
Alaska Life did a freezer system on her Channel.
You were a trooper! That was some hard work.
Lol you know it!
I have never had moose before. I’ve had deer, elk, etc. but not moose. What is the taste like? It was very interesting watching the process of breaking it down. Thanks for showing us!
So good! It’s just a lean red meat similar to elk
@@modernhomesteadalaska Well maybe someday I’ll get the chance to try it!
Shop once a week in the deep freezer and bring up stairs.
Exactly
I wish they did this with elk and deer in our area
Agree
I would have done stew as well
Yeah she kept big chunks and cans lots of stew too. Yesterday was just get it into the freezer and make decisions later.
Hi Jessica
Hello
Scraping salmon for chicken food? Fish cakes, wontons!!
So much scrap from everyone. The chickens just love it though.
I have never seen the flat top food saver, would that be better for packaging meats, or what would you use wit for…. When you did the tomatoes 😊
The chamber vacuums we both use are better “they say” for meat however use what you have and can afford in this economy when you got it, that’s what I say.
would love to see n know how to do jal salt. i have 2 dehydrator
Perfect just dehydrated jalapeño and grind in blender with salt of choice, but I’ll show it
@Modern Homestead Alaska I assumed but wasn't sure I think my hubby will love he loves Chile n salt lol. next week or so my tiny harden goes in 8 serranos 4 jal n some arbor chili's that just chili's for us ivebeen canning salsa n few years pickled jal n serranos
What brand of grinder did your neighbor have? It seemed to work so well
You know I have no idea it was passed down to them from family it was one of those built to last they don’t make them like that anymore.
I have a license to hunt deer with my car made for me after my first deer in the headlights. To people stopped and split the deer after the sheriff shot it so it didn't go to waste.
I understand there are quite a few moves that get hit by vehicles and people have a name on the list but my question is how often do people get called on that list for to pick up a moose that has been killed by a car accident?
It really varies, we have gotten called once every year or two.
This!
can u boil it for dog that way they can get the broth as well
Great idea
Do you keep your chicken's feet for Broth
Totally missed that this year! I was so mad at myself I won’t miss it this time around.
Does moose have a wild taste? Does it taste like venison? Do U have to get a taste for wild meat.?
Nope! Not at all. I guess I could depending on what it was eating. It’s been since childhood that I had venison.
what brand of vac sealer? I have never seen that type.
Mine is an avid armor
@@modernhomesteadalaska Thank you. I have never heard of that. I assume you are pleased, that is quick and does a good job. I told my hubby before next deer season we are getting one that repeat seals.
If that is not girl power then I don't know what is wtg girlies !!!!!!!!
Exactly
That's a LOT of meat!
Now that you have experience dissecting a moose, your family has to go hunting!
Oh yeah we are waiting for moose season we are ready!
Your concept of hamburger and sausage confused me
Hamburger is just the ground meat. Sausage has seasonings added. Hope that helps.
Yummy ,moose meat. Your loosing inches it shows
Sooo good! Thank you
You sure made me tired. I wish you could give me some of your energy..
Lol we burned all that energy up I’m tired today.
Loved watching the processing of the moose !
Thank you
